Algorithmic randomness was originally defined for Cantor space with the fair-coin measure. Recent work has examined algorithmic randomness in new contexts, in particular closed subsets of 2ɷ ([2] and [8]). In this paper we use the probability theory of closed set-valued random variables (RACS) to extend the definition of Martin-Löf randomness to spaces of closed subsets of locally compact, Hausdorff, second countable topological spaces. This allows for the study of Martin-Löf randomness in many new spaces, but also gives a new perspective on Martin-Löf randomness for 2ɷ and on the algorithmically random closed sets of [2] and [8]. The first half of this paper is devoted to developing the machinery of Martin-Löf randomness for general spaces of closed sets. We then prove some general results and move on to show how the algorithmically random closed sets of [2] and [8] fit into this new framework.

For each Turing machine ${\cal T}$, we construct an algebra $\mathbb{A}$′$\left( {\cal T} \right)$ such that the variety generated by $\mathbb{A}$′$\left( {\cal T} \right)$ has definable principal subcongruences if and only if ${\cal T}$ halts, thus proving that the property of having definable principal subcongruences is undecidable for a finite algebra. A consequence of this is that there is no algorithm that takes as input a finite algebra and decides whether that algebra is finitely based.

Presburger arithmetic is the first-order theory of the natural numbers with addition (but no multiplication). We characterize sets that can be defined by a Presburger formula as exactly the sets whose characteristic functions can be represented by rational generating functions; a geometric characterization of such sets is also given. In addition, if p = (p1, . . . , pn) are a subset of the free variables in a Presburger formula, we can define a counting function g(p) to be the number of solutions to the formula, for a given p. We show that every counting function obtained in this way may be represented as, equivalently, either a piecewise quasi-polynomial or a rational generating function. Finally, we translate known computational complexity results into this setting and discuss open directions.

The relativized weak pigeonhole principle states that if at least 2n out of n2 pigeons fly into n holes, then some hole must be doubly occupied. We prove that every DNF-refutation of the CNF encoding of this principle requires size $2^{\left( {{\rm{log\ }}n} \right)^{3/2 - \varepsilon } } $ for every ε﹥0 and every sufficiently large n. By reducing it to the standard weak pigeonhole principle with 2n pigeons and n holes, we also show that this lower bound is essentially tight in that there exist DNF-refutations of size $2^{\left( {{\rm{log\ }}n} \right)^{O\left( 1 \right)} } $ even in R(log). For the lower bound proof we need to discuss the existence of unbalanced low-degree bipartite expanders satisfying a certain robustness condition.

Let Z2, Z3, and Z4 denote 2nd, 3rd, and 4th order arithmetic, respectively. We let Harrington’s Principle, HP, denote the statement that there is a real x such that every x-admissible ordinal is a cardinal in L. The known proofs of Harrington’s theorem “$Det\left( {{\rm{\Sigma }}_1^1} \right)$ implies 0♯ exists” are done in two steps: first show that $Det\left( {{\rm{\Sigma }}_1^1} \right)$ implies HP, and then show that HP implies 0♯ exists. The first step is provable in Z2. In this paper we show that Z2 + HP is equiconsistent with ZFC and that Z3 + HP is equiconsistent with ZFC + there exists a remarkable cardinal. As a corollary, Z3 + HP does not imply 0♯ exists, whereas Z4 + HP does. We also study strengthenings of Harrington’s Principle over 2nd and 3rd order arithmetic.

D’Aquino, Knight, and Starchenko classified the countable real closed fields with integer parts that are nonstandard models of Peano Arithmetic. We rule out some possibilities for extending their results to the uncountable and study real closures of ɷ1-like models of PA.

In this paper we investigate the structure of uncountable maximal antichains of Silver forcing and show that they have to be at least of size d, where d is the dominating number. Part of this work can be used to show that the additivity of the Silver forcing ideal has size at least the unbounding number b. It follows that every reasonable amoeba Silver forcing adds a dominating real.

It is a celebrated result of McKinsey and Tarski [28] that S4 is the logic of the closure algebra Χ+ over any dense-in-itself separable metrizable space. In particular, S4 is the logic of the closure algebra over the reals R, the rationals Q, or the Cantor space C. By [5], each logic above S4 that has the finite model property is the logic of a subalgebra of Q+, as well as the logic of a subalgebra of C+. This is no longer true for R, and the main result of [5] states that each connected logic above S4 with the finite model property is the logic of a subalgebra of the closure algebra R+.

In this paper we extend these results to all logics above S4. Namely, for a normal modal logic L, we prove that the following conditions are equivalent: (i) L is above S4, (ii) L is the logic of a subalgebra of Q+, (iii) L is the logic of a subalgebra of C+. We introduce the concept of a well-connected logic above S4 and prove that the following conditions are equivalent: (i) L is a well-connected logic, (ii) L is the logic of a subalgebra of the closure algebra $\xi _2^ + $ over the infinite binary tree, (iii) L is the logic of a subalgebra of the closure algebra ${\bf{L}}_2^ + $ over the infinite binary tree with limits equipped with the Scott topology. Finally, we prove that a logic L above S4 is connected iff L is the logic of a subalgebra of R+, and transfer our results to the setting of intermediate logics.

Proving these general completeness results requires new tools. We introduce the countable general frame property (CGFP) and prove that each normal modal logic has the CGFP. We introduce general topological semantics for S4, which generalizes topological semantics the same way general frame semantics generalizes Kripke semantics. We prove that the categories of descriptive frames for S4 and descriptive spaces are isomorphic. It follows that every logic above S4 is complete with respect to the corresponding class of descriptive spaces. We provide several ways of realizing the infinite binary tree with limits, and prove that when equipped with the Scott topology, it is an interior image of both C and R. Finally, we introduce gluing of general spaces and prove that the space obtained by appropriate gluing involving certain quotients of L2 is an interior image of R.

We prove that the consequence relation in the Full Non-associative Lambek Calculus is undecidable. An encoding of the halting problem for 2-tag systems using finitely many sequents in the language {⋅,∨} is presented. Therefore already the consequence relation in this fragment is undecidable. Moreover, the construction works even when the structural rules of exchange and contraction are added.

The resurrection axioms are forms of forcing axioms that were introduced recently by Hamkins and Johnstone, who developed on earlier ideas of Chalons and Veličković. In this note, we introduce a stronger form of resurrection (which we call unbounded resurrection) and show that it gives rise to families of axioms which are consistent relative to extendible cardinals, and which imply the strongest known instances of forcing axioms, such as Martin’s Maximum++. In addition, we study the unbounded resurrection postulates in terms of consistency lower bounds, obtaining, for example, failures of the weak square principle.

We construct a speedable set that cannot be split into speedable sets. This solves a question of Bäuerle and Remmel.

While the back-and-forth method has been often attributed to Cantor, it turns out that in the original proof of the characterisation of countable linear dense orders, the mapping is constructed in a single direction. Cameron has called this method Forth and has shown that it can fail to build an automorphism for some homogeneous structures. We give in this paper a characterisation of those homogeneous structures for which Forth always builds an automorphism. This generalises results by Cameron and McLeish.

We prove results that falsify Silver’s dichotomy for Borel equivalence relations on the generalized Baire space under the assumption V = L.

We show that the Mouse Set Conjecture for sets of reals is true in the minimal model of ADℝ + “Θ is regular”. As a consequence, we get that below ADℝ + “Θ is regular”, models of AD++¬ADℝ are hybrid mice over ℝ. Such a representation of models of AD+ is important in core model induction applications.

Extending work of Puninski, Puninskaya and Toffalori in [5], we show that if V is an effectively given valuation domain then the theory of all V-modules is decidable if and only if there exists an algorithm which, given a, b ε V, answers whether a ε rad(bV). This was conjectured in [5] for valuation domains with dense value group, where it was proved for valuation domains with dense archimedean value group. The only ingredient missing from [5] to extend the result to valuation domains with dense value group or infinite residue field is an algorithm which decides inclusion for finite unions of Ziegler open sets. We go on to give an example of a valuation domain with infinite Krull dimension, which has decidable theory of modules with respect to one effective presentation and undecidable theory of modules with respect to another. We show that for this to occur infinite Krull dimension is necessary.
