It is shown that if M is a nonsingular CS-module with an indecomposable decomposition M = ⊕i∊I Mi, then the family {Mi | i € I} is locally semi-T"- nilpotent. This fact is used to prove that any nonsingular self-generator Σ-CS module is a direct sum of uniserial Noetherian quasi-injective submodules. As an application, we provide a new proof of Goodearl's characterization of non-singular rings over which all nonsingular right modules are projective.

We consider the notion of a uniformly concave function, using it to characterize those Lorentz spaces Lw,1 that have the weak-star uniform Kadec-Klee property as precisely those for which the antiderivative ϕ of w is uniformly concave; building on recent work of Dilworth and Hsu. We also derive a quite general sufficient condition for a twice-differentiable ϕ to be uniformly concave; and explore the extent to which this condition is necessary.

We show that this equation has a positive periodic solution x*(t) with period w. We also establish a necessary and sufficient condition for every solution of the equation to oscillate about x*(t) and a sufficient condition for x*(t) to be a global attractor of all solutions of the equation.

We show that polygonal products of polycyclic-by-finite groups amalgamating central cyclic subgroups, with trivial intersections, are conjugacy separable. Thus polygonal products of finitely generated abelian groups amalgamating cyclic subgroups, with trivial intersections, are conjugacy separable. As a corollary of this, we obtain that the group A1 *〈a1〉A2 *〈a2〉 • • • *〈am-1〉Am is conjugacy separable for the abelian groups Ai.

We characterize, by means of congruence identities, all varieties having a weak difference term, and all neutral varieties. Our characterization of varieties with a difference term is new even in the particular case of locally finite varieties.

Let λ be a map from the additive Euclidean n-group Rn into the space R of real numbers and define a multiplication * on Rn by v * w = (λ(w))v. Then (Rn, + , *) is a topological nearring if and only if λ is continuous and λ(av) = aλ(v) for every v € Rn and every a in the range of λ. For any such map λ and any topological space X we denote by Nλ(X, Rn) the nearring of all continuous functions from X into (Rn, +, *) where the operations are pointwise. The ideals of Nλ(X, Rn) are investigated in some detail for certain λ and the results obtained are used to prove that two compact Hausdorff spaces X and Y are homeomorphic if and only if the nearrings Nλ(X, Rn) and Nλ(Y, Rn) are isomorphic.

Among the projective planes, the class of Hughes planes has received much interest, for several good reasons. However, the existing descriptions of these planes are somewhat unsatisfactory. We introduce pseudo-homogeneous coordinates which at the same time are easy to handle and give insight into the action of the group that is generated by all elations of the desarguesian Baer subplane of a Hughes plane. The information about the orbit decomposition is then used to give a description in terms of coset spaces of this group. Finally, we exhibit a non-closing Desargues configuration in terms of coordinates.

An A-group is a finite solvable group all of whose Sylow subgroups are abelian. In this paper, we are interested in bounding the derived length of an A-group G as a function of the number of distinct sizes of the conjugacy classes of G. Although we do not find a specific bound of this type, we do prove that such a bound exists. We also prove that if G is an A-group with a faithful and completely reducible G-module V, then the derived length of G is bounded by a function of the number of distinct orbit sizes under the action of G on V.

The Abbena-Thurston manifold (M,g) is a critical point of the functional where Q is the Ricci operator and R is the scalar curvature, and then the index of I(g) and also the index of — I(g) are positive at (M,g).

In a vicinity of a stationary solution we consider a real analytic system of ODE of order four, depending on a small parameter. We look for families of periodic solutions which contract to the stationary solution, when the parameter tends to zero. We apply the general methods developed in [2] for the study of complex bifurcations and in [4] for local resolutions of singularities.

We show that every weak*-closed derivation from C[0,1] ⊂ L∞[0, 1] into L∞[0, 1] is the inverse of integration against a function in L1[0,1].
