We study statistical properties of the range (= number of distinct sites visited) of a lattice random walk in discrete time constrained to visit a given site at a given time. In particular, we calculate the mean and obtain a bound on the variance of the range in the large time limit. The results are applied to a problem involving an unconstrained random walk in the presence of randomly distributed traps. A key role is played by the associated random walk that is obtained from the original random walk via a Cramer transform.

For simple random walk on the integers, consider the chance that the walk has traveled distance k from its start given that its first return is at time 2n. We derive a limiting approximation accurate to order 1/n. We give a combinatorial explanation for a functional equation satisfied by the limit and show this yields the functional equation of Riemann's zeta function.

A model of cooperation versus defection in a sequence of games is analysed under the assumptions that the rules of the game are randomly changed from one encounter to another, that the decisions are to be made each time anew, according to the (random) rules of the specific local game, and that the result of one such game affects the ability of a player to participate and thus, cooperate in the next game. Under plausible assumptions, it is shown that all Nash solutions of the supergame determine cooperation over a non-degenerate range of rules, determining encounters of the prisoner's dilemma type.

The purpose of this paper is to explore the properties of a new model which can describe the interaction among individuals. Various other models have been proposed, but all assume that each individual acts independently of all others. Our model permits the assumption that individuals can be influenced and dominated by other individuals. We also demonstrate how this model can describe the interaction of various species in an ecosystem. This model will lead naturally to the definition of a population index of diversity. A means of estimating the values of the model will also be given.

Let Tx be the time it takes for a pure jump process, which starts at 0, to cross a threshold x > 0. Sufficient conditions on the parameters of this process under which Tx has increasing failure rate average (IFRA), increasing failure rate (IFR) or logconcave density (PF2) are identified. The conditions for IFRA are weaker than those of Drosen (1986). Sufficient conditions on the parameter of a pure jump process for Tx to the IFR or PF2 are not available in the literature.

An attempt has been made to generalise the concept of exponential mixture to the multivariate case through the random environment model. Some important properties of this class of mixture distributions have been studied, along with characterising properties. A further generalisation for a type of dependent exponential distribution has also been made.

The spacings have been widely applied to many situations, such as for example the coverage problem of the circle or the line, under the hypothesis of uniformity. The paper examines the asymptotic behaviour of the maximal spacings under non-uniformity, assuming that the existing density f has a minimum point m with f(m) = 0. The results are applied to the coverage of the circle by randomly placed arcs.

A simple Bayesian model for oil exploration is suggested to investigate strategies for drilling. A condition on the way successes and failures affect the prior distribution implies a certain form of the detection mechanism. It is shown that the problem of finding strategies for drilling reduces to an optimal stopping problem. Two new families of distributions are obtained with generating functions related to classical work on partitions of integers. By using such distributions and simple mixtures of them as priors, the stopping problem can be solved explicitly. This leads to the construction of simple strategies and their effectiveness is demonstrated by evaluating suitable operating characteristics.

This paper treats stopping problems on Markov chains in which the OLA (one-step look ahead) policy is optimal. Its associated optimal value can be explicitly expressed by a potential for a charge function of the difference between the immediate reward and the one-step-after reward. As an application to the best choice problem, we shall obtain the value of three problems: the classical secretary problem, a problem with a refusal probability and a problem with a random number of objects.

A sufficient condition is derived for the existence of a strictly stationary solution of the general bilinear time series equations. The condition is shown to reduce to the conditions of Pham and Tran (1981) and Bhaskara Rao et al. (1983) in the special cases which they consider. Under the condition specified, a solution is constructed which is shown to be causal, stationary and ergodic. It is moreover the unique causal solution and the unique stationary solution of the defining equations. In the special case when the defining equations contain no non-linear terms, our condition reduces to the well-known necessary and sufficient condition for existence of a causal stationary solution.

A supplemented GSMP (generalized semi-Markov process) is a useful stochastic process for discussing fairly general queues including queueing networks. Although much work has been done on its insensitivity property, there are only a few papers on its general properties. This paper considers a supplemented GSMP in a general setting. Our main concern is with a system of Laplace–Stieltjes transforms of the steady state equations called the basic equations. The basic equations are derived directly under the stationary condition. It is shown that these basic equations with some other conditions characterize the stationary distribution. We mention how to get a solution to the basic equations when the solution is partially known or inferred. Their applications to queues are discussed.

Two service schemes for an M/M/1 time-sharing system with a limited number of service positions are studied. Both schemes possess the equilibrium properties of symmetric queues; however, in the first one, a preempted job is placed at the end of the waiting line; while in the second one, it is placed at the head of the line. Methods for calculating the Laplace transforms and moments of the response times are presented. The variances of the response times are then compared numerically to indicate that the first scheme is superior to the second scheme. It is also indicated that in both cases the response time variance decreases when the number of service positions increases.

This paper provides Berry–Esseen rate of limit theorem concerning the number of customers in a GI/G/K queueing system observed at arrival epochs for traffic intensity ρ > 1. The main method employed involves establishing several equalities about waiting time and queue length.

Finiteness of mean extinction times for certain predator-prey models has been established by Hitchcock (1986) with the aid of a criterion of Reuter (1957). Using this criterion and a ‘minimisation' lemma this note shows that the mean extinction times tend to zero as the combined initial population of predators and prey becomes large.

A random stream of convex particles in , all moving uniformly in the same direction, is given. A convex test body is brought into the stream by means of a random rigid motion, independent of the stream. The number of particles that hit the test body at a preassigned boundary set within unit time is a random variable. Its expected value is determined under different model assumptions.

Consider an ‘experiment' which can be repeated indefinitely often resulting in independent random outcomes. Fix attention on a finite number of possible (sets of) outcomes E1, E2, … and define W = W(N1, N2, …) to be the expected number of repetitions needed to ensure that E1 has occurred (at least) N1 times, E2 has occurred (at least) N2 times, etc. This article examines the asymptotic behavior of W as a function of the sum ΣjNj, as the latter grows without bound.

Failure intensities in which the evaluation of hazard is based on the observation of an auxiliary random process have become very popular in survival analysis. While their definition is well known, either as the derivative of a conditional failure probability or in the counting process and martingale framework, their relationship to conditional survival functions does not seem to be equally well understood. This paper gives a set of necessary and sufficient conditions for the so-called exponential formula in this context.

Recursive relations for computing the higher moments of the stationary waiting time distribution in a stable GI/PH/1 queue are derived. These provide an accurate and stable technique to compute these moments.

Eugene Lukacs died on 21 December 1987 in Washington, D.C. after several strokes. Well known for his work in characterizations of distributions, stability theory and characteristic functions, and particularly for his now classic Characteristic Functions and several other related monographs, he will be sorely missed by his friends and colleagues all over the world.
