In this paper we present recent developments concerning a Cell-Centered Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (CCALE) strategy using the Moment Of Fluid (MOF) interface reconstruction for the numerical simulation of multi-material compressible fluid flows on unstructured grids in cylindrical geometries. Especially, our attention is focused here on the following points. First, we propose a new formulation of the scheme used during the Lagrangian phase in the particular case of axisymmetric geometries. Then, the MOF method is considered for multi-interface reconstruction in cylindrical geometry. Subsequently, a method devoted to the rezoning of polar meshes is detailed. Finally, a generalization of the hybrid remapping to cylindrical geometries is presented. These explorations are validated by mean of several test cases using unstructured grid that clearly illustrate the robustness and accuracy of the new method.

For economizing the space of equipment and increasing the throughput of product, a vertical transportation is usually used for manufacturing a large and thin glass substrate. Due to the fragile characteristic of the large and thin glass substrate, investigation of a method for maintaining the glass substrate stably and safely on a supporting frame during manufacturing processes becomes an important subject. This subject belongs to a kind of moving boundary problem and the method of Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE) with a finite element scheme is suitably used to solve it. Also, related methods of the generalized minimal residual method (GMRES) and pressure convection diffusion method are adopted to calculate pneumatic pressures distributed on the glass substrate. The results show that under a low frequency of the vertical transportation the glass substrate stably lies on the supporting frame, oppositely under a high frequency of the vertical transportation the glass substrate has possibility to depart from the supporting frame. The later situation is disadvantageous to the glass substrate and should be avoided as much as possible.

In this article a two dimensional incompressible viscous flow past a square cylinder oscillating in cross flow with zero and 45 degree angles of attack is numerically studied by a Characteristics Based Splitter (CBS) finite element method. The solver is coupled to a mesh movement scheme using the Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) formulation to account for the body motion in the flow field. First, the accuracy of the numerical code is tested by comparing the numerical results obtained for the flow over the stationary square cylinder at the three different Reynolds numbers (Re = 100, 200, and 300) with the experimental data available. Then, the numerical results for the square cylinder undergoing transverse oscillations in the two angles of attack at different values of frequency and amplitude are investigated to determine the lock-on region. The results indicate physical similarity between circular and square cylinders concerning lock-on regions. Also the effect of lock-on phenomenon on the flow field pattern and time-averaged drag coefficient is investigated.

Our purpose is to estimate numerically the influence of particles on the global viscosity of fluid–particle mixtures. Particles are supposed to rigid, and the surrounding fluid is newtonian. The motion of the mixture is computed directly, i.e. all the particle motions are computed explicitly. Apparent viscosity, based on the force exerted by the fluid on the sliding walls, is computed at each time step of the simulation.In order to perform long–time simulations and still control the solid fraction, we assume periodicity of the flow in the shear direction.Direct simulations are based on the so–called Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian approach, which we adapted to make it suitable to periodic domains.As a first step toward modelling of interacting red cells in the blood, we propose a simple model of circular particles submitted to an attractive force which tends to form aggregates.
