The dissolution of synthetic magnetite, maghemite, hematite, goethite, lepidocrocite, and akaganeite was faster in HCl than in HClO4. In the presence of H+, the Cl− ion increased the dissolution rate, but the ClO4− ion had no effect, suggesting that the formation of Fe-Cl surface complexes assists dissolution. The effect of temperature on the initial dissolution rate can be described by the Arrhenius equation, with dissolution rates in the order: lepidocrocite > magnetite > akaganeite > maghemite > hematite > goethite. Activation energies and frequency factors for these minerals are 20.0, 19.0, 16.0, 20.3, 20.9, 22.5 kcal/mole and 5.8 × 1011, 1.8 × 1010, 7.4 × 107, 5.1 × 1010, 2.1 × 1010, 3.0 × 1011 g Fe dissolved/m2/hr, respectively. The complete dissolution of magnetite, maghemite, hematite, and goethite is well described by the cube-root law, whereas that of lepidocrocite is not.

The formation of fine-grained magnetite (~0.1 μm) at pH 7 and 25°C from aeration of Fe(II) chloride solutions is presented. The magnetite converted at 105°C to maghemite with poorly developed superstructure lines. Under the experimental conditions employed, as the initial [Cl]/[Fe] ratio was increased from the stoichiometric value of 2, the final product contained increasing amounts of lepidocrocite. The degree of crystallinity of this phase, as measured by the width at half height of the 020 X-ray diffraction peak, also increased with this ratio. The hydrolysis rate (base consumption to maintain pH) showed a plateau whose position and extent changed with the initial [Cl]/[Fe] ratio. Through this plateau region the Eh decreased to a minimum value the position of which was directly related to the [Cl]/[Fe] value. The formation of lepidocrocite rather than magnetite is likely due to the high [Cl] where there would be increased difficulty for neighboring OH to condense and eliminate H2O. The formation of Fe-O-Fe bonds in this condensation would be impeded by Cl substitution for OH either in the first formed green rust stage or during its oxidation.

The hydrolytic behavior of Fe solutions at room temperature under acidic conditions was investigated. In the presence of Al ions, with Cl and NO3 as associated anions, the Fe hydrolysis began almost instantaneously and a crystalline β-FeOOH (akaganeite) was formed in the AlCl3/FeCl3 system within a short period. Initially the particles were small with large surface area. However, with time the particles grew in size and the surface area decreased. After about 42 days of equilibration, the akaganeite particles grew to 60–300 nm long, 10–50 nm wide and with a surface area of 55 m2/g, which is similar to other reports for akaganeite prepared at higher temperatures. In the NO3 system [Al(NO3)3/Fe(NO3)3], lepidocrocite (γ-FeOOH) and goethite (α-FeOOH) were formed. In a mixed anion system (Cl/NO3) solid phases identified were akaganeite (β-FeOOH) and lepidocrocite (γ,-FeOOH). The introduction of poly-nuclear hydroxy-Al along with monomer Al in Cl and NO3 systems of Fe affected the quantity and quality of the solid phase. The crystallinity of β-FeOOH formed in the presence of polynuclear hydroxy-Al ions in a Cl-system was more disordered than when it formed in the presence of monomer Al-ions alone. In NO3 systems, polynuclear hydroxy-Al hindered the formation of goethite (α-FeOOH). Our experiments showed that Fe oxyhydroxides crystallize readily under acidic conditions in the presence of Al ions and the data also indicated that the Cl was essential for the crystallization of akaganeite, whereas goethite was formed in those systems when Cl was absent.

The placement of metal oxide pillars between clay mineral layers modifies their physical-chemical properties, including surface area, acidity, and catalytic activity. Aluminum is the most commonly used pillar cation, but the use of Fe offers a distinct opportunity to expand the range of catalytic behavior. The purpose of this study was to prepare Fe-pillared Laponite and montmorillonite and to characterize the resulting Fe phase(s). Laponite or montmorillonite suspension was mixed with different pillaring solutions containing Al oligomer and/or Fe oligomer with Fe:(Al+Fe) percent ratios ranging from 0 to 100%. The Al oligomer was obtained by hydrolysis of A1C13·6H2O with NaOH at pH 4.4 and the Fe oligomer was prepared by FeCl3 hydrolysis with Na2CO3 at pH 2.2. The pillared clay was obtained by adding the oligomer to the clay suspension, then heating to 300°C for 3 h. The Fe oligomer and the pillared clay minerals were characterized by variable-temperature Mössbauer spectroscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, and chemical analysis. The unheated Fe oligomer was akaganeite, an Fe oxyhydroxide phase. Heating the Fe oligomer to 300°C transformed the akaganeite to hematite, but heating it in the presence of the clay protected it, at least partially, from this transformation, creating instead a phase which resembled a more poorly ordered akaganeite or a mixture of akaganeite and poorly ordered hematite. Mixing of Al and Fe oligomers in the pillaring solution had no effect on the magnetic hyperfine field of the Fe pillars, indicating that Al forms separate pillars rather than substituting for Fe in the pillar. A small fraction (4%) of the Fe pillar resisted reductive dissolution by citrate-bicarbonate-dithionite.

Secondary Fe(III) oxyhydroxides play a key role in controlling the mobility and bioavailability of trace metals in acidic, sulfate-rich soils, such as mining and smelter sites. Schwertmannite, jarosite, goethite, and ferrihydrite are the most common mineral phases identified in such soils. A good understanding of the precipitation and transformation of these minerals in soils is very important for predicting the mobility and long-term stability of trace metals associated with them. In the present study, bulk powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), synchrotron based micro- X-ray diffraction (µ-XRD), and micro X-ray fluorescence (µ-SXRF) spectroscopy were used to investigate precipitates fromthe surface horizon of an organic soil (Histosol) at a site that once contained a lead smelter. Soil samples were collected from 0 to ≈10 cm depth during both wet and dry seasons. Goethite and akaganeite were identified as the major mineral phases in this soil. Schwertmannite and jarosite were also occasionally identified, particularly in the soil samples from dry periods. The peaks in the akaganeite XRD pattern were significantly broadened and the relative intensities of some major peaks were distinctly different compared with the diffraction pattern of synthetic akaganeite, possibly due to the effects of pH and the incorporation of sulfate. The SEM and µ-XRD data support the hypothesis that the goethite in the precipitates is not the product of direct precipitation froms olution but the transformation of previously precipitated schwertmannite or akaganeite.

Synchrotron X-ray diffraction was used to monitor the hydrothermal precipitation of akaganeite (β-FeOOH) and its transformation to hematite (Fe2O3) in situ. Akaganeite was the first phase to form and hematite was the final phase in our experiments with temperatures between 150 and 200 °C. Akaganeite was the only phase that formed at 100 °C. Rietveld analyses revealed that the akaganeite unit-cell volume contracted until the onset of dissolution, and subsequently expanded. This reversal at the onset of dissolution was associated with a substantial and rapid increase in occupancy of the Cl site, perhaps by OH− or Fe3+. Rietveld analyses supported the incipient formation of an OH-rich, Fe-deficient hematite phase in experiments between 150 and 200 °C. The inferred H concentrations of the first crystals were consistent with “hydrohematite.” With continued crystal growth, the Fe occupancies increased. Contraction in both a- and c-axes signaled the loss of hydroxyl groups and formation of a nearly stoichiometric hematite.

The Fe3+ uptake from aqueous and methanol solutions of FeCl3·6H2O in two vermiculites from Santa Olalla and Ojén (Spain) and in a montmorillonite from Wyoming has been investigated by Mössbauer spectroscopy at room temperature and 4.2 K. The samples were further characterized by X-ray diffraction. The low temperature Mössbauer spectra reveal the deposition of akaganeite and perhaps some ferrihydrite on the external surface of the clay minerals. The room temperature spectra exhibit two Fe3+ quadrupole doublets in addition to the Fe2+ components of the structural iron in the sheet silicates. On treatment in ⩾0.04 M Fe3+ solutions the Fe3+ quadrupole splittings of 0.90 mm/s and 0.55 mm/s can be assigned to the mineral akaganeite; at smaller Fe3+ concentrations one of these doublets has a quadrupole splitting similar to that of the Fe3+ in the original vermiculites, the other one a quadrupole splitting of 0.6–0.7 mm/s, which can be considered as a hint for an uptake of Fe dimers in the interlayer space irrespective of the solvent used for iron deposition. Preliminary results show that the adsorption of pyrrole in all of our Fe3+-containing samples, regardless of the preparation in aqueous or methanol solution, results in the formation of polypyrrole and a concomitant reduction of some of the Fe3+. An uptake of pyrrole into the interlayer space has been observed only in the Fe3+-containing Wyoming montmorillonite and in the Ojén vermiculite treated with the methanol solution of iron chloride.

Goethite, lepidocrocite, magnetite and akaganeite were synthesized in 0.8 M, 2 M and 5 M NaCl solutions at various temperatures (25, 40, 60°C) under slightly acidic to slightly alkaline pH with or without Si additions. Elevated temperatures prevent complete oxidation of initial Fe2+ solutions and magnetite and siderite precipitate, accompanied by goethite and lepidocrocite. At higher salinity, O2 solubility is reduced and its distribution is limited, leading to coprecipitation of lepidocrocite, akaganeite and goethite.

Lepidocrocite morphology changes from plates at pH 5.5 through rods at pH 7 to multi-domainic crystals at pH 8.2, due to enhanced crystal growth along the c axis. Salinity and temperature have opposite effects on lepidocrocite crystallinity.

Goethite crystals are multi-domainic and twinning appears only at elevated temperatures. Increases in temperature and salinity improve goethite crystallinity as observed by IR spectra. Addition of Si up to Si/Fe = 0.1 retards crystal growth and Si-OH-stretching bands appear. At Si/Fe = 1 most of the precipitate is short range ordered.

Platy and rod-shaped lepidocrocite from the Thetis and Atlantis II Deeps, were probably formed under the slightly acidic conditions of the hydrothermal brines. The Si concentration was greater in Atlantis II Deep than in Thetis Deep, leading to larger lepidocrocite and goethite crystals in the latter.

Multi-domainic goethite could have precipitated throughout. Pure phase goethite might have precipitated in the less concentrated brine, whereas mixtures of goethite and lepidocrocite might have precipitated in the more concentrated brine, depending mainly on oxidation rate and oxygen mobility within the brine.
