This chapter focuses on promoting high-impact philanthropy for the Global South through learning from the experiences of Co-Impact, a global collaborative that advances inclusive systems change and gender equality through grant-making and influencing philanthropy through its network connections. It explains the constraints in philanthropic practice the Co-Impact model is designed to address and how to advance ‘trust-based philanthropy’ that both learns from and inspires others. The chapter argues why, under certain circumstances, pooling funding can achieve greater impact, and the importance and power of philanthropic networks to promote collaboration and impact. It provides a practical approach to addressing inherent power dynamics in philanthropy and discusses the spectrum between collaborative philanthropy and pooled funds. It also tells the story of Co-Impact’s growth and outlines its key learnings with respect to mobilising philanthropic resources. This experience reflects the belief that philanthropic capital can do more and better and that a crucial mechanism for achieving its potential is through active networks. It clarifies how the concept of networks goes beyond loose transactions and collections of people and organisations and instead embodies the idea of a community of interconnected and like-minded individuals and organisations that share similar values, working together to maximise impact. The chapter reinforces the idea that systems change through collaborative communities is critical to ensure that philanthropic interventions result in improved outcomes for millions of people where systems and societies are just and inclusive.

There is a tremendous need for disease-modifying treatments for Alzheimer’s disease (AD). The pharmaceutical sector has expended considerable resources on AD drug discovery, yet to date have obtained regulatory approval for only one agent that slows AD progression. This has led to increased interest in identifying new AD drug targets and disease mechanisms. Academic laboratories can play a meaningful role in the validation of AD drug targets and the identification of molecular probes that modulate these targets. We discuss here how academic researchers can contribute to the AD drug discovery process. This includes examples of assays that have been used for AD small molecule screens within academic laboratories, and discussions on assay optimization for compound screening, the selection of molecular libraries, and the iterative process of compound optimization to identify molecules suitable for advancement to in vivo pharmacokinetic, safety, and efficacy testing. Finally, we outline how academic researchers might work with pharmaceutical partners in AD drug discovery, and note the pros and cons of such collaborations.

The present chapter is concerned with the methods and tools that have been proposed and used to assess creativity in children and adolescents. Creativity across developmental periods is a moving target. The 7 Cs framework highlights the main facets of creativity that have appeared in the literature (Lubart, 2017). These Cs provide a framework for examining creativity assessment in terms of Creators (creative people), Creating (the act of producing new work), Collaborations (interactions with close others during creation), Context (the physical and social environment), Creation (the new production and its characteristics), Consumption (the uptake and adoption of creative work), and Curricula (teaching and developing creativity through education).

This chapter describes many potential collaborations within and beyond the university environment to expand reproductive healthcare, rights, and justice. Academic partnerships should be created with colleagues from diverse medical specialties and health care disciplines to expand clinical care, education, research, and advocacy efforts. Collaborations with organizations beyond the university can ideally be integrated into academic institutions’ missions to serve the surrounding community and to advocate for people and policy change. These can also include expansion of and improvements in reproductive healthcare, education, research to identify barriers and approaches to overcome them, and advocacy with existing community partners.

There is growing interest in bridging the gap between science and society. Fostering relationships between researchers and practitioners, such as partnering to conduct experiments, is an increasingly popular way to do that. Yet, despite the growing number of such partnerships, academics who are new to them often lack guidance about considerations to keep in mind and the steps involved. This chapter bridges the gap. I discuss the benefits, challenges, and goals of organizational partnerships as well as provide a step-by-step guide for academics beginning new ones. Throughout, I emphasize the fact that such partnerships entail building new working relationships with people who have diverse forms of knowledge. As a result, both a learning mindset as well as a relational mindset are necessary.

Borges’s writing partnership with Bioy Casares was long-lasting and fruitful, producing a unique narrative voice and several pseudo–authors. Two of these are Bustos Domecq and Isidro Parodi –specialists in crime detection and detective fiction. Bioy and Borges collaborated as editors and compilers – of anthologies, prologues, glosses, and translations. Their attacks on nationalist and populist politics were especially virulent in the period 1942-1947, with General Perón the main target. ’La fuerza del monstruo’ (1947) is a powerful condemnation of the abuse of power and could not be published until his removal from power in 1955. A key feature of ’La fiesta...’ is its linguistic texture, constructing a carnival atmosphere.
