Two phases of archaeological investigation were performed in the Novi Sad City Museum at Petrovaradin Fortress. In this study, we summarize the results of geo-archaeological investigations of the second period of excavation inside the Novi Sad City Museum building. The fortress is situated on a Danube terrace with the top of the bedrock at ca.123 m asl. The investigated section consists of undisturbed fine-sandy silt. The grain-size distribution of the sediments indicates clearly its alluvial reworking but shows also a general similarity with typical primary loess in the region. All analyzed proxies indicate slightly stronger weathering in the upper part of the profile. Luminescence ages suggest that the investigated sequence covers the last glacial period and the terrace presumably formed during MIS 4. Subsequently, the Danube started its incision at the start of the next warmer period (MIS 3) onward. This terrace age and elevation enable us to derive an uplift rate of the terrace of ca. 0.73 mm/a for the last 60 ka, which seems to increase towards the present. Basal loessic material, in which artifacts occur, likely in the reworked position, indicate that the area close to today's Petrovaradin Fortress was already inhabited in MIS 5.

In this article, I focus on the context in which levees were constructed on the Lower Danube, along the Bulgarian–Romanian border. I argue that after World War II, while the two states shared the management of the river in this region, Romania pursued a techno-nationalist hydraulic policy, which led to the complete damming of the left bank of the Danube with levees. Bulgaria also succeeded in building levees on its side of the Danube, that is the right bank of the common border; however, Bulgaria used different technologies and its building works proceeded at a different pace. Techno-nationalism as delineated in this article considers nation-states as basic units in the analysis of technologies. Technological development is not a flowing process, as it becomes entangled with the interests of nation-states seeking legitimation. Hydraulic technology may strengthen nation-states, and in some circumstances leads to the emergence of nationalistic ideologies.

The author describes a process of systematic integration of aerial and satellite imagery, which has provided a huge increase in the number of known burial mounds in the area where the Danube meets the Black Sea. Careful evaluation of newly acquired and archival imagery from satellites and lower level platforms shows where data is comparable and how visibility varies with imagery type. Excavations to date suggest the majority of the mounds are of Greco-Roman date and associated with the large towns and their road networks. Clusters of barrows exist, hinting at associated settlement aggregation, but a large proportion are single tumuli, raising interesting questions about their social role in this period. Above all, the large numbers revealed by the survey must invite new thoughts on whether, or in what way, the mounds reflect social ranking.

This newly discovered and excavated site defines an Upper Palaeolithic activity unit consisting of a roasting pit at the centre of an area 5m across. Although the main task was the processing of two mammoths, there were numerous other wild animals in the assemblage. The occupants used flint knives, made bone tools and modelled in baked clay – on which they left their fingerprints, along with imprints of reindeer hair and textiles. Pavlov VI offers an exemplary picture of the basic living unit that made up the settlement clusters of the Gravettian people in Central Europe.

Based on field observations performed in 1999 and 2000, the exotic amphipod Dikerogammarus villosus is now well established throughout the navigable sector of the River Moselle in France. D. villosus co-occurs with Gammarus pulex, G. tigrinus and D. haemobaphes, another recent exotic species found in this tributary of the River Rhine. The maximal size of individuals of D. villosus collected (15.7 mm) is lower in the River Moselle than in other basins, where this species could reach up to 30 mm (Neseman et al. 1995). Nevertheless it represents the largest gammarids found in the French sector of the River Moselle. Other particular traits are its wide phenotypic plasticity, varying from a melanic to a striped form, and its predatory behavior. These particular traits may favour the establishment of this species on a recipient ecosystem. The occurrence of D. villosus was noted in the Alsace Canal and in the River Rhône, showing that its immigration across French hydrosystems is still in progress.

This paper reports the results from three fixed-location acoustic surveys carried out in August and September 1996 to analyse the influence of diurnal behaviour rhythms and water-level fluctuations on the migratory activities of fish in the mouth of the Regelsbrunn-arm east of Vienna, Austria. A BioSonics 105 dual-beam echosounder (420 kHz), with a circular transducer (6°/15°) beaming nearly horizontal across the arm was used, with acoustic ranges of between 20 and 30 m. All surveys were conducted during day and night. The fish density was highest during the first observation period with low water level, lowest during the second sampling period with increasing water level, and intermediate during the third period with decreasing water level. The fish density was always higher during night than during day. Diurnal behaviour rhythms influenced the fish density as well as the size-frequency distribution. Increasing or decreasing water-gauge superposed the influence of diurnal behaviour rhythms on the size-frequency distribution for immigrating fish of certain length classes. Fish within the length group 10–15 cm tended to migrate upstream during decreasing water-gauge. Fish above 400 mm total length tended to move upstream during increasing water-gauge.

Fondés sur le matériel recueilli pendant deux campagnes de recherches (1971-1980 et 1991-1993) dans les eaux souterraines du Danube à Vienne (zone Lobau), les auteurs font un bilan des Cladocères récoltés dans ce milieu. Parmi les 16 espèces inventoriées, 5 sont stygophiles : Alonella nana, Chydorus sphaericus, Alona guttata, Acroperus harpae et Biapertura affinis. Toutes les données montrent que les espèces benthiques des eaux souterraines du Lobau sont en liaison étroite avec celles de la surface (bras mort Eberschüttwasser), formant des populations communes «nappe alluviale-benthos» dont la dynamique est fortementinfluencée par le régime hydrologique.

La première synthèse sur les Gastéropodes signalés à ce jour dans le secteur roumain du Danube (chenal, systèmes lacustres de la zone inondable, delta) avec mise à jour taxonomique (classification, synonymies, corrections) est présentée. Pour chacune des 54 espèces recensées sont indiqués : l'aire de répartition sur le globe et dans le bassin du Danube, une brève caractérisation écologique, le matériel étudié par l'auteur et les données de la bibliographie sélectionnées d'une manière critique. Le travail s'achève par l'analyse biogéographique des espèces étudiées. Celle-ci souligne le nombre relativement élevé des espèces endémiques à aire de répartition restreinte.
