Let $X_1,X_2, \ldots, X_n$ be a sequence of independent random points in $\mathbb{R}^d$ with common Lebesgue density f. Under some conditions on f, we obtain a Poisson limit theorem, as $n \to \infty$ , for the number of large probability kth-nearest neighbor balls of $X_1,\ldots, X_n$ . Our result generalizes Theorem 2.2 of [11], which refers to the special case $k=1$ . Our proof is completely different since it employs the Chen–Stein method instead of the method of moments. Moreover, we obtain a rate of convergence for the Poisson approximation.

We introduce a model for the spreading of fake news in a community of size n. There are $j_n = \alpha n - g_n$ active gullible persons who are willing to believe and spread the fake news, the rest do not react to it. We address the question ‘How long does it take for $r = \rho n - h_n$ persons to become spreaders?’ (The perturbation functions $g_n$ and $h_n$ are o(n), and $0\le \rho \le \alpha\le 1$ .) The setup has a straightforward representation as a convolution of geometric random variables with quadratic probabilities. However, asymptotic distributions require delicate analysis that gives a somewhat surprising outcome. Normalized appropriately, the waiting time has three main phases: (a) away from the depletion of active gullible persons, when $0< \rho < \alpha$ , the normalized variable converges in distribution to a Gumbel random variable; (b) near depletion, when $0< \rho = \alpha$ , with $h_n - g_n \to \infty$ , the normalized variable also converges in distribution to a Gumbel random variable, but the centering function gains weight with increasing perturbations; (c) at almost complete depletion, when $r = j -c$ , for integer $c\ge 0$ , the normalized variable converges in distribution to a convolution of two independent generalized Gumbel random variables. The influence of various perturbation functions endows the three main phases with an infinite number of phase transitions at the seam lines.

We consider point process convergence for sequences of independent and identically distributed random walks. The objective is to derive asymptotic theory for the largest extremes of these random walks. We show convergence of the maximum random walk to the Gumbel or the Fréchet distributions. The proofs depend heavily on precise large deviation results for sums of independent random variables with a finite moment generating function or with a subexponential distribution.

The GLEAMS model (Groundwater Loading Effects of Agricultural Management Systems) is used to illustrate model application in evaluating potential pesticide runoff of two similar pesticides from one soil. This limited application was chosen for simplicity in illustrating relationships between annual means and single events. When using annual totals of simulated pesticide runoff for comparing two pesticides or assessing risks, long-term 50-yr simulations are preferable to short 10-yr simulations. When short-term simulations are performed, care must be exercised in selecting representative climatic periods. For short half-life pesticides, as demonstrated in this study, initial rainfall events on or near the day of application will often contribute most to annual pesticide lost. In these cases, single event analysis may be required. Procedures are demonstrated for expressing annual total pesticide losses and single rainfall event losses probabilistically in terms of expected recurrence intervals.

As the name suggests, the family of general error distributions has been used to model nonnormal errors in a variety of situations. In this article we show that the asymptotic distribution of linearly normalized partial maxima of random observations from the general error distributions is Gumbel when the parameter of these distributions lies in the interval (0, 1). Our result fills a gap in the literature. We also establish the corresponding density convergence, obtain an asymptotic distribution of the partial maxima under power normalization, and state and prove a strong law. We also study the asymptotic behaviour of observations near the partial maxima and the sum of such observations.

In this paper we study efficient simulation algorithms for estimating P(X›x), where X is the total time of a job with ideal time T that needs to be restarted after a failure. The main tool is importance sampling, where a good importance distribution is identified via an asymptotic description of the conditional distribution of T given X›x. If T≡t is constant, the problem reduces to the efficient simulation of geometric sums, and a standard algorithm involving a Cramér-type root, γ(t), is available. However, we also discuss an algorithm that avoids finding the root. If T is random, particular attention is given to T having either a gamma-like tail or a regularly varying tail, and to failures at Poisson times. Different types of conditional limit occur, in particular exponentially tilted Gumbel distributions and Pareto distributions. The algorithms based upon importance distributions for T using these asymptotic descriptions have bounded relative error as x→∞ when combined with the ideas used for a fixed t. Nevertheless, we give examples of algorithms carefully designed to enjoy bounded relative error that may provide little or no asymptotic improvement over crude Monte Carlo simulation when the computational effort is taken into account. To resolve this problem, an alternative algorithm using two-sided Lundberg bounds is suggested.

Spanish building legislation has recently changed and now requires an updated and restructured Technical Building Code which is in accordance with European directives. The norm contained in this Code is based on studies of extreme values for climatic elements such as temperature, precipitation and wind. Revised maps of extreme values for climatic elements with a 50-year recurrence interval are required. Here, extreme maximum and minimum temperature maps for Spain are evaluated and mapped by means of geographical information technology. The data are extracted from the historical database held by the Spanish Meteorological Institute. Daily extreme temperatures from 1,181 stations with records going back more than 30 years have been used. The maximum and minimum temperatures are determined as 50-year mean recurrence interval values. To obtain these values, a Gumbel distribution is fitted to the extreme annual values extracted from the database. Spatial interpolation in a regular 5 km × 5 km grid of the annual maximum temperature is made by ordinary kriging. Meanwhile, for the annual minimum temperature a residual kriging has been applied due to its strong dependence on altitude.

Consider a classical compound Poisson model. The safety loading can be positive, negative or zero. Explicit expressions for the distributions of the surplus prior and at ruin are given in terms of the ruin probability. Moreover, the asymptotic behaviour of these distributions as the initial capital tends to infinity are obtained. In particular, for positive safety loading the Cramer case, the case of subexponential distributions and some intermediate cases are discussed.

The problem of estimating an unknown compact convex set K in the plane, from a sample (X1,···,Xn) of points independently and uniformly distributed over K, is considered. Let Kn be the convex hull of the sample, Δ be the Hausdorff distance, and Δn := Δ (K, Kn). Under mild conditions, limit laws for Δn are obtained. We find sequences (an), (bn) such that

(Δn - bn)/an → Λ (n → ∞), where Λ is the Gumbel (double-exponential) law from extreme-value theory. As expected, the directions of maximum curvature play a decisive role. Our results apply, for instance, to discs and to the interiors of ellipses, although for eccentricity e < 1 the first case cannot be obtained from the second by continuity. The polygonal case is also considered.

The joint limiting distribution of suitably normalized partial sums and maxima in a stationary strong mixing sequence with finite variance is derived. It is found that in the limit the two components are independent. This generalizes Chow and Teugels' result for independent sequences. Motivation for the present study comes from a statistical problem in the analysis of extreme winds.

Consequences of embedding sequences {Mn} in an extremal-F process are discussed where Mn represents the maximum of n independent (but not necessarily identically distributed) random variables. Various limit theorems are proved for the sample record rate, record times, inter-record times, and record values. These results are illustrated with applications to three particular record models: the Yang (1975) record model where population size increases geometrically, a record model where linear improvement is present, and a record model incorporating features of the previous two.

For a sample of points drawn uniformly from either the d-dimensional torus or the d-cube, d ≧ 2, we give limiting distributions for the largest of the nearest-neighbor links. For d ≧ 3 the behavior in the torus is proved to be different from the behavior in the cube. The results given also settle a conjecture of Henze (1982) and throw light on the choice of the cube or torus in some probabilistic models of computational complexity of geometrical algorithms.

A transformation is introduced to stabilize the variance of the largest value in a sample from a normal distribution. The transformed distribution is found to approximate closely to the limiting Gumbel form for all sample sizes. The practical implications of the result are discussed.
