Arc-jet facilities have been the norm for ablation experiments used to calibrate computational models to date. However, the arc jet has a few major limitations and challenges, including non-uniform enthalpy distribution, non-equilibrium state, change of surface quality during testing and the extent of oxidation, to name but a few. A novel plasma technique for preheating axisymmetric heatshield samples in hypersonic impulse facilities is presented herein. The major aim of this innovative work is to help reduce the large variations of ablation rate predictions, space vehicle materials and missile design/testing, obtain strongly coupled hypersonic boundary layers and achieve lower cost of aerothermodynamics experiments. This present work remains one of the most highly anticipated solutions to maximise payload success and replicate high surface temperatures identical to those experienced by real flight vehicles. This work makes a useful contribution to re-entry studies under conditions that replicate the characteristics of re-entry flights. Future applications for the technique are expected to be found in hypersonic impulse facilities that can simulate the true flow energy under re-entry conditions.

The objective of this study is to identify, evaluate, and provide recommendations towards the realisation of near-term hypersonic flight hardware through the consideration of carrier vehicle constraints. The current rush of available funds for hypersonic research cannot cause a program to ignore growth potential for future missions. The prior NB-52 carrier vehicles, famous for the X-15 and X-43A missions, are retired. Next generation hypersonic demonstrator requirements will necessitate a substitution of carrier vehicle capability. Flight vehicle configuration, technology requirements, and recommendations are arrived at by constructing and evaluating a hypersonic technology demonstrator design matrix. This multi-disciplinary parametric sizing investigation of hypersonic vehicle demonstrators focuses on the evaluation of the combined carrier platform, booster, and hypersonic cruiser solution space topography. Promising baseline configurations are evaluated against operational requirements by trading fuel type, endurance cruise time, and payload weight. The multi-disciplinary study results are constrained with carrier payload mass and geometry limitations. The multi-disciplinary results provide physical insights into near-term hypersonic demonstrator payload and cruise time requirements that will stretch the capability of existing carrier aircraft. Any growth in hypersonic research aircraft size or capability will require new carrier vehicle investments.

This paper presents the implementation, validation and application of TCE (total collision energy) model for simulating hypersonic reactive flows in a parallel direct simulation Monte Carlo code, named PDSC++, using an unstructured grid. A series of benchmarking test cases, which include reproduction of theoretical rate constants in a single cell, 2D hypersonic flow past a cylinder and 2D-axisymmetric hypersonic flow past a sphere, were performed to validate the implementation. Finally, detailed aerothermodynamics of the flown reentry Apollo 6 Command Module at 105 km is simulated to demonstrate the powerful capability of the PDSC++ in treating realistic hypersonic reactive flow at high altitude.

Currently, there exists a lack of confidence in the computational simulation of multiple body high-speed air delivered systems. Of particular interest is the ability to accurately predict the dispersion pattern of these systems under various deployment configurations. Classical engineering-level methods may not be able to predict these patterns with adequate confidence due primarily to accuracy errors attributable to reduced order modeling. In the current work, a new collision modeling capability has been developed to enable multiple-body proximate-flight simulation in the Loci/CHEM framework. This approach maintains high-fidelity aerodynamics and incorporates six degrees of freedom modeling with collision response, and is well-suited for simulation of a large number of projectiles. The proposed simulation system is intended to capture the strong interaction phase early in the projectile deployment, with subsequent transfer of projectile positions and flight states to the more economical engineering-level methods. Collisions between rigid bodies are modeled using an impulse-based approach with either an iterative propagation method or a simultaneous method. The latter is shown to be more accurate and robust for cases involving multiple simultaneous collisions as it eliminates the need to sort and resolve the collisions sequentially. The implementation of both the collision detection methodology and impact mechanics are described in detail with validation studies to demonstrate the efficiency and accuracy of the developed technologies. The studies chronologically detail the findings for simulating simple impacts and collisions between multiple bodies with aerodynamic interference effects.

In this paper, direct numerical simulation (DNS) is presented for spatially evolving turbulent boundary layer over an isothermal flat-plate at Ma∞ = 2.25,5,6,8. When Ma∞ = 8, two cases with the ratio of wall-to-reference temperature Tω/T∞ = 1.9 and 10.03 are considered respectively. The wall temperature approaches recovery temperatures for other cases. The characteristics of compressible turbulent boundary layer (CTBL) affected by freestream Mach number and wall temperature are investigated. It focuses on assessing compressibility effects and the validity of Morkovin's hypothesis through computing and analyzing the mean velocity profile, turbulent intensity, the strong Reynolds analogy (SRA) and possibility density function of dilatation term. The results show that, when the wall temperature approaches recovery temperature, the effects of Mach number on compressibility is insignificant. As a result, the compressibility effect is very weak and the Morkovin's hypothesis is still valid for Mach number even up to 8. However, when Mach number equal to 8, the wall temperature effect on the compressibility is sensitive. In this case, when Tω/T∞ = 1.9, the Morkovin's hypothesis is not fully valid. The validity of classical SRA depends on wall temperature directly. A new modified SRA is proposed to eliminate such negative factor in near wall region. Finally the effects of Mach number and wall temperature on streaks are also studied.

In this paper, we study the phenomena of thermo-chemical imbalance in a reactive mono-dimensional flow composed of a mixture of (79% nitrogen N2 and 21% oxygen O2). We are interested in modeling the physicochemical process that may be encountered in hypersonic flows, as vibrational excitation, dissociation and ionization, also the formation of chemical species to higher temperatures behind a detached strong shock. We put a special emphasis on vibrational relaxation model of CVD coupling. At these high temperatures, collisions electrons-atoms become very effective, taking in account the radiation that requires knowledge and modeling of all physicochemical processes (collisional and radiative). The mathematical model of flows at the atmospheric reentry is governed by Euler stationary equations coupled with the chemical kinetics and the radiative transfer equations. Our computational code is based on the finite differences method that used to discretize and resolve the obtained numerical model, where an appropriate mesh is selected in the relaxation zone in order to determine the flow parameters at each grid position

The role of streamline curvature-driven favourable pressure gradients in modifying the turbulence structure of a Mach 4.9, high-Reynolds-number (${\mathit{Re}}_{\theta } = 43\hspace{0.167em} 000$) boundary layer is examined. Three pressure gradient cases ($\beta = (\mathrm{d} p/ \mathrm{d} x)({\delta }^{\ast } / {\tau }_{w} )= 0. 07, - 0. 3$ and $- 1. 0$) are characterized via particle image velocimetry. The expected stabilizing trends in the Reynolds stresses are observed, with a sign reversal in the Reynolds shear stress in the outer part of the boundary layer for the strongest favourable pressure gradient considered. The increased transverse normal strain rate and reduced principal strain rate are the primary factors. Reynolds stress quadrant events are redistributed, such that the relative differences between the quadrant magnitudes decreases. Very little preferential quadrant mode selection is observed for the strongest pressure gradient considered. Two-point correlations suggest that the turbulent structures are reoriented to lean farther away from the wall, accompanied by a slight reduction in their characteristic size, consistent with previous flow visualization studies. This reorientation is more pronounced in the outer, dilatation-dominated region of the boundary layer, whereas the alteration in structure size is more pronounced nearer the wall, where the principal strain rates are larger. In addition, integration of a simplified form of a Reynolds stress transport closure model provided a framework to assess the role of the strain-rate field on the observed Reynolds shear stresses. Given the simple geometry, the present data provide a suitable test bed for Reynolds stress transport and large-eddy model development and validation.

Cette étude traite de la simulation numérique desécoulements à haute enthalpie en non-équilibrethermochimique. La résolution des équations2D-axisymétrique de Navier-Stokes permet de prévoirnumériquement la structure d'un écoulement réactif,partiellement ionisé. La méthode numérique repose surune formulation de type volume fini couplée à l'approcheMUSCL-TVD et est associée à un solveur de Riemann.L'intérêt est porté sur la contribution desdifférents phénomènes de non-équilibre sur le fluxde chaleur et les paramètres thermodynamiques.L'écoulement est externe et s'effectue autour du nez d'unsphère-cylindre se déplaçant avec des nombres de Machcompris entre 15 et 18. Les résultats obtenus sont en bonaccord avec lesvaleurs prédites par d'autres simulations et les données expérimentales.
