In order to study the structure and temperature distribution within high-mass star-forming clumps, we employed the Australia Telescope Compact Array to image the $\mathrm{NH}_3$ (J,K) = (1,1) through (6,6) and the (2,1) inversion transitions, the $\mathrm{H}_2\mathrm{O}$ $6_{16}$-$5_{23}$ maser line at 22.23508 GHz, several $\mathrm{CH}_3\mathrm{OH}$ lines and hydrogen and helium recombination lines. In addition, 22- and 24-GHz radio continuum emission was also imaged.

The $\mathrm{NH}_3$ lines probe the optical depth and gas temperature of compact structures within the clumps. The $\mathrm{H}_2\mathrm{O}$ maser pinpoints the location of shocked gas associated with star formation. The recombination lines and the continuum emission trace the ionised gas associated with hot OB stars. The paper describes the data and presents sample images and spectra towards select clumps. The technique for estimating gas temperature from $\mathrm{NH}_3$ line ratios is described. The data show widespread hyperfine intensity anomalies in the $\mathrm{NH}_3$ (1,1) images, an indicator of non-LTE $\mathrm{NH}_3$ excitation. We also identify several new $\mathrm{NH}_3$ (3,3) masers associated with shocked gas. Towards AGAL328.809+00.632, the $\mathrm{H}_2\mathrm{O}$ $6_{16}$-$5_{23}$ line, normally seen as a maser, is instead seen as a thermally excited absorption feature against a strong background continuum. The data products are described in detail.

The mobility of lighter species on the surface of interstellar dust grains plays a crucial role in forming simple through complex molecules. Carbon monoxide is one of the most abundant molecules, its surface diffusion on the grain surface is essential to forming many molecules. Recent laboratory experiments found a diverse range of diffusion barriers for CO on the grain surface, their use can significantly impact the abundance of several molecules. The impact of different diffusion barriers of CO, in the astrochemical models, is studied to understand its effect on the abundance of solid CO and the species for which it is a reactant partner. A gas-grain network is used for three different physical conditions; cold core and warm-up models with slow and fast heating rates. Two different ratios (0.3 and 0.5) between diffusion and desorption barrier are utilised for all the species. For each physical condition and ratio, six different models are run by varying diffusion barriers of CO. Solid CO abundance for the models with the lowest diffusion barrier yields less than 0.1% of water ice for cold clouds and a maximum of 0.4% for slow and fast warm-up models. Also, solid $\textrm{CO}_2$ in dense clouds is significantly overproduced ( ${\sim}140\%$ of water). The abundance of H2CO and $\textrm{CH}_3\textrm{OH}$ showed an opposite trend, and HCOOH, $\textrm{CH}_3\textrm{CHO}$ , $\textrm{NH}_2\textrm{CO}$ , and $\textrm{CH}_3\textrm{COCH}_3$ are produced in lower quantities for models with low diffusion barriers for CO. Considerable variation in abundance is observed between models with the high and low diffusion barrier. Models with higher diffusion barriers provide a relatively better agreement with the observed abundances when compared with the models having lower diffusion barriers.

All textile integrated dual-band monopole antenna with an artificial magnetic conductor (AMC) is proposed. The proposed design operates at 2.4 and 5.8 GHz for wearable medical applications to monitor the heartbeat. A flexible and low-profile E- shaped CPW dual-band textile antenna is integrated with a 4 × 4 dual-band textile AMC reflector to enhance the gain and specific absorption rate (SAR). The SAR is reduced by nearly 95% at both 1 and 10 g. The design was measured on the body with a 2 mm separation. The simulated and measured results appear in high agreement in the case of with and without AMC array integration. The measurement was performed in the indoor environment and in an anechoic chamber to validate the design based on reflection coefficient and radiation pattern measurements.

How galaxies replenish their gas supply in order to sustain star formation, is a research topic of many of the new and upcoming neutral atomic hydrogen (Hi) surveys on the SKA precursor instruments. This replenishment, or accretion, of gas in the form of Hi is likely to occur at column densities one or two orders of magnitude below previous observational limits and it has, so far, not been unambiguously detected. We present recent deep Hi observations of NGC 5068, an isolated nearby star-forming galaxy observed by MeerKAT as part of the MHONGOOSE survey. This survey is the deepest Hi survey of nearby galaxies until the advent of the SKA and is reaching column densities of resolution. The combination of the resolution and sensitivity of the MeerKAT HI data have revealed “fingers” of low column density gas extending out from the main Hi disk of the galaxy. While the origin of these fingers remains a mystery for now, the dynamics of the main galaxy disk and the outer disk in which the fingers are located, as well as the morphology of the fingers, does not seem to suggest a previous merger event.

In order to clarify the dust production in the early Universe, we constrain the dust mass in high-redshift (z ≳ 5) galaxies using the upper limits obtained by ALMA. We perform fitting to the rest-frame UV–far-infrared spectral energy distribution (SED) of a giant Lyα emitter, Himiko, at z = 6.6 and a composite SED of z > 5 Lyman break galaxies (LBGs). For Himiko, we obtain a high dust temperature > 70 K. This high dust temperature puts a strong upper limit on the total dust mass Md ≲ 2 × 106 M⊙, and the dust mass produced per supernova (SN) md,SN ≲ 0.1 M⊙. Such a low md,SN suggests significant loss of dust by reverse shock destruction or outflow. For the LBG sample, we only obtain an upper limit for md,SN as ∼2 M⊙. This clarifies the importance of observing UV-bright objects (like Himiko) to constrain the dust production by SNe.

We have entered an era where the gas mass estimates of distant galaxies do not rely on a single tracer but rather on an inventory of different and independent methods, much like the case for the determination of the star formation rate (SFR) of the galaxies. This is crucial as the traditional Mgas tracers, i.e. low-J CO transition lines and dust continuum emission are becoming highly uncertain as we move to higher redshifts due to metallicity and CMB effects. Here, we present a homogeneous and statistically significant investigation of the use of atomic carbon as an alternative Mgas tracer (Valentino et al.2018) and provide evidence of optically thick far-IR emission in high−z starbursts that point towards higher dust temperatures and lower dust and gas mass estimates than previously inferred (Cortzen et al.2019, submitted). Finally, we present direct observations of the effect of the CMB on the far-IR SEDs of high-z SBs, manifested by unphyscally large (β = 2.5–3.5) apparent spectral indexes in R-J tail (Jin et al. 2019, submitted).

We present 0.″2–0.″4 resolution ALMA images of the submillimeter dust continuum and the CO, H2O, and H2O+ line emission in a z = 3.63 strongly lensed dusty starburst. We construct the lens model for the system with an MCMC technique. While the average magnification for the dust continuum is about 11, the magnification of the line emission varies from 5 to 22 across the source, resolving the source down to sub-kpc scales. The ISM content reveals that it is a pre-coalescence major merger of two ultra-luminous infrared galaxies, both with a large amount of molecular gas reservoir. The approaching galaxy in the south shows no apparent kinematic structure with a half-light radius of 0.4 kpc, while the preceding one resembles a 1.2 kpc rotating disk, separated by a projected distance of 1.3 kpc. The distribution of dust and gas emission suggests a large amount of cold ISM concentrated in the interacting region.

Thermal desorption experiments of Formamide (NH2CHO) and methylamine (CH3NH2) were performed in LERMA-Cergy laboratory to determine the values of the desorption energies of formamide and methylamine from analogues of interstellar dust grain surfaces, and to understand their interaction with water ice. We found that more than 95 % of solid NH2CHO diffuses through the np-ASW ice surface towards the graphitic substrate, and is released into the gas phase with a desorption energy distribution Edes = (7460 – 9380) K, measured with the best-fit pre-exponential factor A=1018 s-1. Whereas, the desorption energy distribution of methylamine from the np-ASW ice surface (Edes =3850-8420 K) is measured with the best-fit pre-exponential factor A=1012s-1. A fraction of solid methylamine, of about 0.15 monolayer diffuses through the water ice surface towards the HOPG substrate, and desorbs later, with higher binding energies (5050-8420 K), which exceed that of the crystalline water ice (Edes =4930 K), calculated with the same pre-exponential factor A=1012 s-1.

Cyclopropenylidene,, is a simple hydrocarbon, ubiquitous in astrophysical gases, and possessing a permanent electric dipole moment. Its readily observed multifrequency rotational transitions make it an excellent probe for the physics and history of interstellar matter. The collisional properties of with He are presented here. We computed the full Potential Energy Surfaces, and we perform quantum scattering in order to provide rates of quenching and excitation for low to medium temperature regimes. We discuss issues with the validity of the usual Local Thermodynamical Equilibrium assumption, and also the intricacies of the spectroscopy of an asymmetric top. We present the wide range of actual critical densities, as recently observed.

Experimental data showing superhydrogenation of neutral polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) coronene, pentacene and pentacenequinone is presented. PAH monolayers were prepared on a highly oriented pyrolytic graphite surface and subsequently exposed to a beam of atomic hydrogen. The superhydrogenated PAH species were examined via temperature programmed desorption measurements. Stable intermediate superhydrogenation degrees as well as fully superhydrogenated species are observed and the initial reaction cross section for coronene has been determined.

We are performing systematic observation studies on the Galactic interstellar isotopic ratios, including 18O/17O, 12C/13C, 14N/15N and 32S/34S. Our strategy focuses on combination of multi-transition observation data toward large samples with different Galactocentric distances. Our preliminary results show positive Galactic radial gradients of 18O/17O and 12C/13C. In both cases, the ratio increases with the Galactocentric distance, which agrees with the inside-out scenario of our Galaxy. Observations of other isotopes such as 14N/15N and 32S/34S are on-going.

The relative abundances of the radionuclides in the solar system at the time of its birth are crucial arbiters for competing hypotheses regarding the birth environment of the Sun. The presence of short-lived radionuclides, as evidenced by their decay products in meteorites, has been used to suggest that particular, sometimes exotic, stellar sources were proximal to the Sun’s birth environment. The recent confirmation of neutron star - neutron star (NS-NS) mergers and associated kilonovae as potentially dominant sources of r-process nuclides can be tested in the case of the solar birth environment using the relative abundances of the longer-lived nuclides. Critical analysis of the 15 radionuclides and their stable partners for which abundances and production ratios are well known suggests that the Sun formed in a typical massive star-forming region (SFR). The apparent overabundances of short-lived radionuclides (e.g. 26Al, 41Ca, 36Cl) in the early solar system appears to be an artifact of a heretofore under-appreciation for the important influences of enrichment by Wolf-Rayet winds in SFRs. The long-lived nuclides (e.g. 238U, 244Pu, 247Cr, 129I) are consistent with an average time interval between production events of 108 years, seemingly too short to be the products of NS-NS mergers alone. The relative abundances of all of these nuclides can be explained by their mean decay lifetimes and an average residence time in the ISM of ∼200 Myr. This residence time evidenced by the radionuclides is consistent with the average lifetime of dust in the ISM and the timescale for converting molecular cloud mass to stars.

We have combined data of the DustPedia project with observations of gas components of the interstellar medium (ISM) and metallicity abundances for late-type DustPedia galaxies to definitively characterize the ISM scaling relations in the Local Universe. In particular, we have focused on the comparison of the dust-to-gas mass ratio with gas phase metallicities.

We have performed 3D hydrodynamic simulations of a symmetrical jet ejection following previous works (Raga et al. 2009, Riera et al. 2014, Velázquez et al. 2014). The jet is emitted from a binary system in elliptical orbit, and its direction changes describing a precession cone. We have considered that the jet has a time-dependence density ejection or a time-dependence velocity ejection, in order to propose an alternative model to explain the morphology of PPNe’s. Also in our description we have included the effect of the photoionization of the central source. From numerical results, synthetic Hα maps were obtained, and a proper motion study were carried out. We found that the photoionization has an important effect on the case with variation density resulting in a increse in the Hα emission.

Upcoming HI surveys will deliver such large datasets that automated processing using the full 3-D information to find and characterize HI objects is unavoidable. Full 3-D visualization is an essential tool for enabling qualitative and quantitative inspection and analysis of the 3-D data, which is often complex in nature. Here we present SlicerAstro, an open-source extension of 3DSlicer, a multi-platform open source software package for visualization and medical image processing, which we developed for the inspection and analysis of HI spectral line data. We describe its initial capabilities, including 3-D filtering, 3-D selection and comparative modelling.

The published properties of M1-78 are discussed with the purpose of resolving the object’s classification as either a planetary nebula or an ultracompact HII region. A classification as a planetary nebula is rejected primarily because of the high luminosity of the object, but because of the chemical composition and expansion velocity of the nebula, a novel classification is proposed instead: that of an ultracompact HII region with a post-main sequence central star (possibly a WN star). It must therefore follow that observable ultracompact HII regions persist beyond the main sequence lifetimes of at least some massive stars, and so cannot be transient phenomena that are seen only during pre-main sequence or early main sequence evolution.

Sites of recent star formation often radiate strong maser emission from methanol transitions near 6-6 and 12 GHz. We have studied many of these masers over several years and find that intensity variations are common on both transitions. We present observations which demonstrate marked variability in 48 sources. We explore the characteristics of the variability and find it to be typically quasi-periodic, on a timescale of between a month and several years. The amplitude of the variation is most commonly less than a factor of two, but can reach factors of ten. The variability of different features in a source is usually independent. Variability of features seen at both 6·6 and 12 GHz is sometimes correlated, with larger amplitudes usually seen at 12 GHz. A likely inference is that variations are occasionally due to a change in the pump rate throughout the masing region, but most are consistent with a change in the masing path length due to large-scale motions. In addition, it is likely that the majority of 6·6-GHz masers are saturated whereas the 12-GHz masers may be somewhat less saturated.

An outline is given of the main research programs currently in progress at the Carter Observatory. These include: the establishment of a set of standard star magnitudes and colours in the Vilnius seven-colour photometric system; the study of galactic and extragalactic star clusters using Vilnius and broadband photometries; binary stars and the development of APTs; and the history of Australasian astronomy. The role of Carter Observatory Honorary Research Associates is described and mention is made of the joint New Zealand/Japan program to observe gravitational microlensing effects, discover variable stars and patrol selected clusters of galaxies for supernovae.

This paper describes the first results from a 20 deg2 mosaic of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) in the λ21-cm line of neutral hydrogen. The mosaic consists of 320 separate pointings with the 375-m array of the Australia Telescope Compact Array. The angular resolution is 1′· 5 (26 pc, for a distance of 60 kpc) and the velocity resolution is l·6kms−1. The images reveal a structure of remarkable complexity, with much of the spatial power contained in high-brightness temperature compact knots and filaments. Numerous wind-blown ‘bubbles’ and ‘supershells’ are evident in the data, both inside and outside the stellar confines of the SMC. Some high-density H I regions are seen to correlate with Hα regions, indicating sites of current star formation. However, many high-column-density H I regions are devoid of optical emission and may represent regions of future star formation. These regions may be under-abundant in diffuse molecular gas due to the high radiation field and low metallicity of the SMC.

The outskirts of galaxies — especially the very extended Hi disks of galaxies — are strongly affected by their local environment. I highlight the giant 2X-Hi disks of nearby galaxies (M 83, NGC 3621, and NGC 1512), studied as part of the Local Volume Hi Survey (LVHIS), their kinematics and relation to XUV disks, signatures of tidal interactions and accretion events, the MHI - DHI relation as well as the formation of tidal dwarf galaxies. - Using multi-wavelength data, I create 3D visualisations of the gas and stars in galaxies, with the shape of their warped disks obtained through kinematic modelling of their Hi velocity fields.
