Thousands of ring-like bubbles appear on infrared images of the Galaxy plane. Most of these infrared bubbles form during expansion of Hii regions around massive stars. However, the physical effects that determine their morphology are still under debate. Namely, the absence of the infrared emission toward the centres of the bubbles can be explained by pushing the dust grains by stellar radiation pressure. At the same time, small graphite grains and PAHs are not strongly affected by the radiation pressure and must be removed by another process. Stellar ultraviolet emission can destroy the smallest PAHs but the photodestruction is ineffective for the large PAHs. Meanwhile, the stellar wind can evacuate all types of grains from Hii regions. In the frame of our chemo-dynamical model we vary parameters of the stellar wind and illustrate their influence on the morphology and synthetic infrared images of the bubbles.

The dust properties of the line-of-sight materials in neutron star low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) can be probed by X-ray observations and laboratory experiments. We use a Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method to conduct a spectral analysis of Chandra ACIS-S/HETG archival data of a sample of LMXBs, including GX 5-1 and GX 13+1. Our MCMC-based analysis puts constraints on the Si K-edge dust properties of the outflowing disk winds in this sample. Further X-ray observations of other LMXBs will help us better understand the grain features of dense outflows and accretion flows in neutron star binary systems.

The estimation of interstellar dust masses is an important pursuit in our understanding of both local and early Universe – see e.g. the “dust budget crisis”. One of the most used methods of estimating dust masses – dust emission fitting – requires an estimate of the dust opacity at far-infrared and submillimeter wavelengths, but in most models this quantity is based on extrapolation rather than on actual measurements. It is becoming more and more evident that the opacity in typical dust models differs from that of dust analogs measured in the lab, meaning that astronomical dust mass estimations may need to be revised. To estimate the systematic errors introduced by this mismatch, we calculated dust emission for a model where dust far-infrared opacity is the same as that measured in lab samples, then we fit the synthetic emission with a typical (modified blackbody) dust model. Our results show that, if interstellar dust is indeed similar to the lab dust analogs, most fits may overestimate dust masses by as much as an order of magnitude.

The motivation of the “unified model” is to explain the main properties of the large zoo of active galactic nuclei with a single physical object. The discovery of broad permitted lines in the polarized spectrum of type 2 Seyfert galaxies in the mid 80’s led to the idea of an obscuring torus, whose orientation with respect to our line of sight was the reason of the different optical spectra. However, after many years of observations with different techniques, including IR and mm interferometry, the resulting properties of the observed dust structures differ from the torus model that would be needed to explain the type 1 vs type 2 dichotomy. Moreover, in the last years, multi-frequency monitoring of active galactic nuclei has shown an increasing number of transitions from one type to the other one, which cannot be explained in terms of the simple orientation of the dusty structure surrounding the active galactic nucleus (AGN). The interrelations between the AGN and the host galaxy, as also shown in the Magorrian relation, suggest that the evolution of the host galaxy may also have an important role in the observed manifestation of the nuclei. As an example, the observed delay between the maximum star formation activity and the onset of the AGN activity, and the higher occurrence of type 2 nuclei in star forming galaxies, have suggested the possible evolutionary path from, e.g., H II → AGN2 → AGN1. In the next years the models of unification need to also consider this observational framework and not only simple orientation effects.

In this invited talk, we discuss the physics of the lifecycle of dust in the context of galaxy formation simulations. After outlining the basic physical processes, we apply algorithms for the formation, growth, and destruction of dust in the ISM to a state-of-the-art cosmological simulation to develop a model for the evolution of the dust to gas and dust to metals ratios in galaxies. We show that while modern simulations are able to match the observed dust mass function at redshift z = 0, most models underpredict the observed mass function at high-redshift (z = 2). We then show the power of these techniques by expanding our model to include a spectrum of dust sizes, and make initial predictions for extinction laws in local galaxies.

We describe recent simulations of interstellar and laboratory ices using the 3-D, off-lattice microscopic Monte Carlo kinetics model MIMICK. The simulations indicate that interstellar ices are capable of achieving porous structures, dependent on physical conditions. In some cases, such structures may be filled as they are formed, by mobile/volatile species such as H2 that become trapped in those structures. Simulations of laboratory water-ice deposition using MIMICK suggest that an additional non-thermal diffusion mechanism is required to reproduce the high degree of porosity achieved for experimental ices at temperatures less than ~80 K. This mechanism is related to the deposition process itself. Simulations of temperature-programmed desorption of mixed molecular ices are ongoing. The interstellar models have also recently been developed to incorporate a full gas-phase chemistry, coupled with the grain-surface chemistry.

The properties of interstellar dust (ID) can be studied in great detail by making use of X-ray spectroscopy techniques. The radiation of X-rays sources is scattered and absorbed by dust grains in the interstellar medium. The X-ray band is especially suitable to study silicates - one of the main components of ID -since it contains the absorption edges of Si, Mg, O and Fe. In the Galaxy, we can use absorption features in the spectra of X-ray binaries to study the size distribution, composition and crystalline structure of grains. In order to derive these properties, it is necessary to acquire a database of detailed extinction cross sections models, that reflects the composition of the dust in the interstellar medium. We present the extinction profiles of a set of newly acquired measurements of 14 dust analogues at the Soleil Synchrotron facility in Paris, where we focus on silicates and the Si-K edge in particular, which is modelled with unprecedented accuracy. These models are used to analyse ID in the dense environments of the Galaxy.

Amorphous Mg-Fe silicates are produced from microwave-dried sol-gels and their thermal crystallisation is studied via in situ synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction. Mg-pyroxene crystallised to forsterite, enstatite and cristobalite. The inclusion of 10% Fe formed only forsterite at much higher temperature, while pure Mg-olivine crystallised at a lower temperature than Mg-pyroxene. Cristobalite is observed as a high-temperature crystallite in the pure-Mg compositions. Crystallisation activation energies are derived and discussed in relation to protoplanetary disks.

The mid-IR spectrum of the interstellar medium contains both aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbon features. These are generally attributed to carbonaceous dust. The aliphatic component is of particular interest because it produces a significant 3.4 μm absorption feature. The optical depth of this feature is related to the number and type of aliphatic carbon C–H bonds in the line of sight. It is possible to estimate the column density of aliphatic carbon from quantitative analysis of the 3.4 μm interstellar feature, providing that the absorption coefficient of interstellar aliphatic hydrocarbon is known. We produced interstellar dust analogues with spectra closely matching astronomical observations. Using a combination of FTIR and 13C NMR spectroscopy, we determined an integrated absorption coefficient of the aliphatic component. The results thus obtained permit direct calibration of astronomical observations, providing rigorous estimates of the amount of aliphatic carbon in the ISM.

We assess the accuracy of various computational methods for obtaining infrared (IR) spectra of nanosized silicate dust grains directly from their atomistic structure and atomic motions. First, IR spectra for a selection of small nanosilicate clusters with a range of sizes and chemical compositions are obtained within the harmonic oscillator approximation employing density functional theory (DFT) based quantum chemical calculations. To check if anharmonic effects play a significant role in the IR spectra of these nanoclusters, we further obtain their IR spectra from finite temperature DFT-based ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD). Finally, we also study the effect of temperature on the broadening of the obtained IR spectra peaks in larger nanosilicate grains with a range of crystallinities. In this case, less computationally costly classical molecular dynamics simulations are necessary due to the large number of atoms involved. Generally, we find that although DFT-based methods are more accurate, surprisingly good IR spectra can also be obtained from classical molecular dynamics calculations.

This paper presents mass, temperature profile, and the variation of Planck’s function in different regions around asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. The physics of the interstellar medium (ISM) is extremely complex because the medium is very inhomogeneous and is made of regions with fairly diverse physical conditions. We studied the dust environment such as flux, temperature, mass, and inclination angle of the cavity structure around C-rich asymptotic giant branch stars in 60 μm and 100 μm wavelengths band using Infrared Astronomical Survey. We observed the data of AGB stars named IRAS 01142+6306 and IRAS 04369+4501. Flexible image transport system image was downloaded from Sky View Observatory; we obtained the surrounding flux density using software Aladin v2.5. The average dust color temperature and mass are found to be 25.08 K, 23.20 K and 4.73 × ;1026 kg (0.00024 M⊙), 2.58 × 1028 kg (0.013 M⊙), respectively. The dust color temperature ranges from 18.76 K ± 3.16 K to 33.21K ± K and 22.84 K ± 0.18 K to 24.48 K ± 0.63 K. The isolated cavity like structure around the AGB stars has an extension of 45.67 pc × 17.02 pc and 42.25 pc × 17.76 pc, respectively. The core region is found to be edge-on having an inclination angle of 79.46° and 73.99°, respectively.

We present a model to map the 3D distribution of dust in the Milky Way. Although dust is just a tiny fraction of what comprises the Galaxy, it plays an important role in various processes. In recent years various maps of dust extinction have been produced, but we still lack a good knowledge of the dust distribution. Our presented approach leverages line-of-sight extinctions towards stars in the Galaxy at measured distances. Since extinction is proportional to the integral of the dust density towards a given star, it is possible to reconstruct the 3D distribution of dust by combining many lines-of-sight in a model accounting for the spatial correlation of the dust. Such a technique can be used to infer the most probable 3D distribution of dust in the Galaxy even in regions which have not been observed. This contribution provides one of the first maps which does not show the “fingers of God” effect. Furthermore, we show that expected high precision measurements of distances and extinctions offer the possibility of mapping the spiral arms in the Galaxy.

Interstellar dust is still a dominant uncertainty in Astronomy, limiting precision in e.g., cosmological distance estimates and models of how light is re-processed within a galaxy. When a foreground galaxy serendipitously overlaps a more distant one, the latter backlights the dusty structures in the nearer foreground galaxy.

Such an overlapping or occulting galaxy pair can be used to measure the distribution of dust in the closest galaxy with great accuracy. The STARSMOG program uses Hubble to map the distribution of dust in foreground galaxies in fine (<100 pc) detail. Integral Field Unit (IFU) observations will map the effective extinction curve, disentangling the role of fine-scale geometry and grain composition on the path of light through a galaxy.

The overlapping galaxy technique promises to deliver a clear understanding of the dust in galaxies: geometry, a probability function of dimming as a function of galaxy mass and radius, and its dependence on wavelength.

Characterization of how dense molecular cores evolve into stars has historically been made through observational changes in their 2 to 25 μm spectral energy distribution (SED) or bolometric temperature via the Class system. Linking these observational classes to a physical protostellar phase or Stages in a consistent manner remains challenging. In order to provide a uniform indicator of whether an observationally classified embedded protostar candidate is likely to be a physical phase Stage 0 or I protostar, we performed an HCO+(J=3-2) survey of Class 0+I and Flat SED young stellar objects (YSOs) in the Spitzer nearby (D < 500 pc) Gould Belt cloud surveys. We use criteria from van Kempen et al.(2009) to classify sources as Stage 0+I or bona fide protostars and find 84% of our HCO+ detected sources meet that criteria. We recommend 0.54 Myr as an evolutionary timescale for these embedded protostars. We discuss trends in our sample with spatial distribution, molecular cloud extinction, spectral index, and bolometric temperature and luminosity.

The gas-phase metallicity is one of the key insights we have into measuring the chemical feedback of stars in galaxies, yet remains difficult to correctly determine. However, there is a close relation between gas-phase metals and dust in the ISM, which can give us insight into the correct metallicity in galaxies. Here I will present recent work on metallicity gradients in galaxies, and how we can measure the global metallicity and the radial gradients in nearby galaxies using dust, through the dust-to-gas ratio.

The composition of interstellar matter is driven by environmental parameters and results from extreme interstellar medium physico-chemical conditions. Astrochemists must rely on remote observations to monitor and analyze the interstellar solids composition. They bring additional information from the study of analogues produced in the laboratory, placed in simulated space environments. Planetologists and cosmochemists access and spectroscopically examine collected extraterrestrial material in the laboratory. Diffuse interstellar medium and molecular clouds observations set constraints on the composition of organic solids that can then be compared with collected extraterrestrial materials analyses, to shed light on their possible links.

We describe preliminary results for two ALMA projects – 1) imaging the HCN(4-3) line and H26α lines in Arp 220 and 2) measurements of the dust continuum in a sample of 107 high redshift galaxies to probe the evolution of the ISM masses. The HCN observations in Arp 220 at 1/2″ resolution provide the first high resolution imaging of the dense star forming gas in this prototypical ULIRG. The HCN is seen in two clearly delineated, counter-rotating disks. The H26α line is a definitive probe of the star formation rate in Arp 220, avoiding obscuration by dust and contamination by AGN luminosity contributions. In the second project, the remarkable continuum sensitivity of ALMA in Band 7 is used to measure the long wavelength Rayleigh-Jeans tail of the dust emission from a sample of 120 galaxies in COSMOS at z = 0.3 to 2.2, providing estimates for the dust masses and hence their ISM masses. This technique will enable measurements for hundreds of galaxies at high-z with observations of typically ~10 min per galaxy. This is in contrast to CO line imaging which typically requires a few hours per galaxy even with the sensitivity of ALMA. The dust-based mass estimates also avoid the uncertainties associated with the CO-to-H2 conversion factor.

Blue luminescence (BL) and extended red emission (ERE) are observed as diffuse, optical-wavelength emissions in interstellar space, resulting from photoluminescence by ultraviolet(UV)-illuminated interstellar grains. Faintness and the challenge of separating the BL and ERE from the frequently much brighter dust-scattered continuum present major observational hurdles, which have permitted only slow progress in testing the numerous models that have been advanced to explain these two phenomena. Both the ERE, peaking near 680 nm (FWHM ~ 60 - 120 nm) and the BL, asymmetrically peaking at ~ 378 nm (FWHM ~ 45 nm), were first discovered in the Red Rectangle nebula. Subsequently, ERE and BL have been observed in other reflection nebulae, and in the case of the ERE, in carbon-rich planetary nebulae, H II regions, high-latitude cirrus clouds, the galactic diffuse ISM, and in external galaxies. BL exhibits a close spatial and intensity correlation with emission in the aromatic emission feature at 3.3 micron, most likely arising from small, neutral polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) molecules. The spectral characteristics of the BL also agree with those of fluorescence by PAH molecules with 13 to 19 carbon atoms. The BL phenomenon is thus most readily understood as the optical fluorescence of small, UV-excited aromatic molecules. The ERE, by contrast, though co-existent with mid-IR PAH emissions, does not correlate with emissions from either neutral or ionized PAHs. Instead, the spatial ERE morphology appears to be strictly governed by the density of far-UV (E ≥ 10.5 eV) photons, which are required for the ERE excitation. The most restrictive observational constraint for the ERE process is its exceptionally high quantum efficiency. If the ERE results from photo-excitation of a nano-particle carrier by photons with E ≥ 10.5 eV in a single-step process, the quantum efficiency exceeds 100%. Such a process, in which one to three low-energy optical photons may be emitted following a single far-UV excitation, is possible in highly isolated small clusters, e.g. small, dehydrogenated carbon clusters with about 20 to 28 carbon atoms. A possible connection between the ERE carriers and the carriers of DIBs may exist in that both are ubiquitous throughout the diffuse interstellar medium and both have an abundance of low-lying electronic levels with E ≤ 2.3 eV above the ground state.

With modern large scale spectroscopic surveys, such as the SDSS and LSS-GAC, Galactic astronomy has entered the era of millions of stellar spectra. Taking advantage of the huge spectroscopic database, we propose to use a “standard pair" technique to a) Estimate multi-band extinction towards sightlines of millions of stars; b) Detect and measure the diffuse interstellar bands in hundreds of thousands SDSS and LAMOST low-resolution spectra; c) Search for extremely faint emission line nebulae in the Galaxy; and d) Perform photometric calibration for wide field imaging surveys. In this contribution, we present some results of applying this technique to the SDSS data, and report preliminary results from the LAMOST data.
