Amicarbazone, atrazine, and metribuzin behavior was examined in a field setting in Tennessee and in a laboratory setting using soils collected from Illinois and Tennessee. Fields planted to corn were sampled from 0 to 8 cm depth, and the samples were analyzed using methanolic extraction followed by tandem mass spectrometry analysis to determine residual herbicide concentrations. Conditions were favorable for herbicide degradation, including warm temperatures and adequate rainfall. All herbicide half-lives were <10 d. Laboratory research using soils with known atrazine-use histories showed that amicarbazone did not exhibit enhanced microbial degradation due to previous atrazine use. Apparent amicarbazone and metribuzin persistence levels implied that early-season weed control would be expected, but carryover to injure sensitive rotational crops would not be anticipated under these environmental conditions. Dissipation under field conditions of amicarbazone and metribuzin was not affected by being applied to separate plots or by coapplication to the same plots.

Soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] that lack resistance to auxin herbicides [i.e., not genetically modified for resistance] have well-documented responses to those particular herbicides, with yield loss being probable. When a soybean field is injured by auxin herbicides, regulatory authorities often collect a plant sample from that field. This research attempted to simulate soybean exposures due to accidental mixing of incorrect herbicides, tank contamination, or particle drift. This research examined whether analytical testing of herbicide residues on soybean to aminocyclopyrachlor (ACP), aminopyralid, 2,4-D, or dicamba would be related to the visual observations and yield responses from these herbicides. ACP and aminopyralid were applied to R1 soybean at 0.1, 1, and 10 g ae ha−1; 2,4-D and dicamba were applied at 1, 10, and 100 g ae ha−1. Visual evaluations and plant sample collections were undertaken at 1, 3, 7, 14, and 21 d after treatment (DAT), and yield was measured. The conservative limits of detection for the four herbicides in this project were 5, 10, 5, and 5 ng g−1 fresh weight of soybean for ACP, aminopyralid, 2,4-D, and dicamba, respectively. Many of the plant samples were non-detects, especially at lower application dosages. All herbicide concentrations rapidly declined soon after application, and many reached nondetectable limits by 14 DAT. All herbicide treatments caused soybean injury, although the response to 2,4-D was markedly lower than the responses to the other three herbicides. There was no apparent correlation between herbicide concentrations (which were declining over time) and the observed soybean injury (which was increasing over time or staying the same). This research indicated that plant samples should be collected as soon as possible after soybean exposure to auxin herbicides.

The local invariants of a meromorphic quadratic differential on a compact Riemann surface are the orders of zeros and poles, and the residues at the poles of even orders. The main result of this paper is that with few exceptions, every pattern of local invariants can be obtained by a quadratic differential on some Riemann surface. The exceptions are completely classified and only occur in genera zero and one. Moreover, in the case of a nonconnected stratum, we show that, with three exceptions in genus one, each configuration of invariants can be realized in each non-hyperelliptic connected component of the stratum. In the hyperelliptic components with two poles the residues at both poles coincide. These results are obtained using the flat metric induced by the differentials. We give an application by bounding the number of disjoint cylinders on a primitive quadratic differential.

Searching for residue in the glaze of porcelain or stoneware is a difficult task because these glazes are high-fired, well vitrified, and nonporous. This paper analyzes the chemical composition of residue observed in glaze cracks of porcelain via SEM-EDS to determine how the crackle effect was produced, in particular, if it was intentionally created during production or the result of post-depositional processes. This study offers insights to a specific type of ancient Chinese porcelain called “Ge-type ware”, which has two different types of cracks, and whose origin has been debated for nearly 60 years because it has never been found at any kiln site. This paper analyzes the chemical composition of the two crack types, first using elemental mapping to ascertain the different mechanisms that produced these two crack types of the Heirloom Ge ware, and second using residue analysis and chemical fingerprinting to determine the provenance of this puzzling type of porcelain. In doing so, this paper demonstrates how the residue in the glaze of porcelain can be observed and analyzed via microchemical approaches and hopes to inspire more research using this technique in future.

Cover crops have increased in popularity in midwestern U.S. corn and soybean systems in recent years. However, little research has been conducted to evaluate how cover crops and residual herbicides are effectively integrated together for weed control in a soybean production system. Field studies were conducted in 2016 and 2017 to evaluate summer annual weed control and to determine the effect of cover crop biomass on residual herbicide reaching the soil. The herbicide treatments consisted of preplant (PP) applications of glyphosate plus 2,4-D with or without sulfentrazone plus chlorimuron at two different timings, 21 and 7 d prior to soybean planting (DPP). Cover crops evaluated included winter vetch, cereal rye, Italian ryegrass, oat, Austrian winter pea, winter wheat, and a winter vetch plus cereal rye mixture. Herbicide treatments were applied to tilled and nontilled soil without cover crop for comparison. The tillage treatment resulted in low weed biomass at all collection intervals after both application timings, which corresponded to tilled soil having the highest sulfentrazone concentration (171 ng g−1) compared with all cover crop treatments. When applied PP, herbicide treatments applied 21 DPP with sulfentrazone had greater weed (93%) and waterhemp (89%) control than when applied 7 DPP (60% and 69%, respectively). When applied POST, herbicide treatments with a residual herbicide resulted in greater weed and waterhemp control at 7 DPP (83% and 77%, respectively) than at 21 DPP (74% and 61%, respectively). Herbicide programs that included a residual herbicide had the highest soybean yields (≥3,403 kg ha−1). Results from this study indicate that residual herbicides can be effectively integrated either PP or POST in conjunction with cover crop termination applications, but termination timing and biomass accumulation will affect the amount of sulfentrazone reaching the soil.

As Satellite Clock Bias (SCB) prediction may be affected by various factors such as periodic items, sampling length, and stochastic items, a fusion-based prediction method is proposed by considering characteristics of SCB and fitted residue. On this basis, an instance algorithm is presented by fusing four typical prediction models. First, we use Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) to pre-process and decompose the SCB series into multiple components with various characteristics. Then, we analyse the fitting performance of each model for different components and prediction length, namely short-, mid- and long-term prediction, and select models with the best performance. Next, we analyse fitted residue of the reconstructed SCB, and select the model with the best fitting results. Finally, we fuse the multiple selected models for SCB prediction. The method is tested using Global Positioning System (GPS) precise clock products provided by the International Global Navigation Satellite System Service (IGS). Experimental results show that, compared with single prediction models and existing combination models, the proposed fusion-based prediction method improves accuracy and stability. In particular, the proposed method is more stable and has better performance for mid- and long-term prediction.

Little information is published related to seed germination and seedling emergence of Japanese foxtail, a troublesome annual grass weed widely distributed in winter wheat fields in China. Three Japanese foxtail populations were studied under laboratory and greenhouse conditions, to determine the effects of different environmental factors on seed germination or seedling emergence. Chemical control is absolutely necessary in integrated management, and efficacy of POST herbicides against different growth stages of Japanese foxtail was evaluated. Germination rate was 90% or more when temperature ranged from 5 to 25 C, with germination onset shortened as temperature increased. Light was not required for germination to occur. For pH values ranging from 5 to10 there was no effect on seed germination. Japanese foxtail seed germination was sensitive to osmotic stress and completely inhibited at an osmotic potential of -1.1 MPa. The ‘1513’ population of Japanese foxtail demonstrated tolerance to soil salinity, with 98% germination at 80 mM NaCl compared with 25 and 40% germination for populations ‘1532’ and ‘1544’, respectively. High amounts of crop residue (10 t ha−1) suppressed Japanese foxtail emergence 38 to 55%. Germination of seeds placed at 160 C for 5 min was completely inhibited for dry seeds, with a similar effect at 130 C for pre-soaked seeds. Seed burial in the soil from 0 to 4 cm had no effect on seedling emergence, but burial at 7 cm completely inhibited seedling emergence. POST herbicides mesosulfuron-methyl (13.5 g ai ha−1), clodinafop-propargyl (67.5 g ai ha−1), pyroxsulam (13.5 g ai ha−1), pinoxaden (67.5 g ai ha−1) and isoproturon (1125 g ai ha−1) reduced plant dry weight 80% or more when applied at three- to seven-leaf stage, but control declined with application at later growth stages. The information from this study helps to develop an integrated approach to Japanese foxtail management.

One year after application under irrigated conditions, atrazine at 1.2 kg/ha injured oat but there was no effect after two years. On dryland, wheat and barley were injured for up to two years after atrazine was applied at 1.5 kg/ha. Atrazine concentrations in the soil were related to accumulated rainfall in an exponential equation. The equation predicted that, under the most severe drought conditions ever recorded for southern Alberta, injury to cereal crops could occur for at least three years after atrazine application at 1.2 to 1.5 kg/ha. Cyanazine did not injure subsequent crops under either irrigated or dryland conditions.

Chlorsulfuron was applied to wheat at rates of 0, 10, 20, and 40 g ai ha-1 in three locations at Lethbridge and Brooks between 1980 and 1984. The soil pH and organic matter contents at Lethbridge and Brooks were 8.0 and 2.1% and 7.4 and 3.0%, respectively. Rotational crops were seeded for up to 7 yr after chlorsulfuron application. The criteria used to indicate when susceptible crops will grow safely were no significant yield loss at the 40 g ha-1 rate and the magnitude of the upper confidence limit for this difference. The following times after application before crop yields were not affected were required at Lethbridge: barley, 2 yr; canola, 3 yr; peas, beans, 4 yr; flax and potatoes, 5 yr; alfalfa and sugarbeets, 6 yr; and lentils at least 7 yr. The effect of chlorsulfuron residues in the soil on rotational crops appeared to be similar at Brooks and at Lethbridge. Estimated chlorsulfuron concentrations were related to the tolerance of rotational crops.

Four forest watersheds (1 ha each) in the upper piedmont of Georgia were treated with hexazinone [3-cyclohexyl-6-(dimethylamino)-1-methyl-1,3,5-triazine-2,4(1H, 3H)-dione] pellets3 at a rate of 1.68 kg ai/ha. From the end of April, 1979, until May, 1980, 26 storms were monitored to determine movement of hexazinone and two of its metabolites [A: 3-(4-hydroxycyclohexyl)-6-(dimethylamino)-1-methyl-1,3,5-triazine-2,4(1H, 3H)-dione, and B: 3-cyclohexyl-6-(methylamino)-1-methyl-1,3,5-triazine-2,4(1H, 3H)-dione] in runoff water. Residues in runoff peaked in the first storm after application (mean concentration of 442 ± 53 ppbw), and declined with subsequent storms in a power curve function: Conc. (ppbw) = 405 × rate × (1 + 0.44 × days)-1.1. Loss of hexazinone in storm runoff averaged 0.53% of the applied herbicide, with Storms 1 and 17 accounting for 59.3% of the chemical exported. Storm 1 had high residue concentrations and low runoff volume, while Storm 17 contained only low residue levels but a very large stormflow. Hexazinone was the predominant compound in the runoff of all 26 storms. Metabolites A and B occurred in runoff in low-to-trace concentrations (<23 ppbw) for up to 7 months after application. Subsurface movement of hexazinone appeared in streamflow 3 to 4 months after application and produced an additional loss of 0.05%. A second-order perennial stream below the treated watersheds periodically contained hexazinone residues of <44 ppbw.

An experimental plot sprayer, with a new mixing chamber and water measuring system, was developed to minimize operator exposure to pesticides during mixing and rinsing. Premeasured herbicide samples in 50-ml capped test tubes are emptied into the mixing chamber, and water is measured, rinses the test tube, and drains into the chamber to produce the spraying volume. This system eliminates operator contact with the chemicals and can be flushed quickly between plots to eliminate contamination. Rinsing efficiency with atrazine was greater for a suspension than a wettable powder formulation but less than 0.1% of the initial concentration was detected in water following the first or second rinsing.

Characterization of herbicide dissipation under field conditions is an important component in determining the environmental impact of herbicides, and much information is available on this subject. However, this research area could be improved by standardizing and implementing several quality control procedures. The purpose of this review is to evaluate the recent literature on herbicide dissipation published in journals of the Weed Science Society of America. This review is not comprehensive with respect to all experimental parameters associated with field dissipation studies, but it is aimed at addressing specific areas of concern in the experimental approach to this research.

Mature plants of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. ‘Super Sioux’), cucumber (Cucumis sativas L. ‘Early pickling’), and pinto bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), in small field plots, were exposed once to sprinkler or furrow irrigation water containing 0.11 kg/ha or 1.12 kg/ha MSMA (monosodium methanearsonate). Concentrations of MSMA in water were about 0.22 ppmw and 2.2 ppmw for the two rates, respectively. Samples of crops and soil were subsequently analyzed for elemental arsenic content by colorimetric and atomic absorption methods. Arsenic residues were higher, compared to controls, only in crops exposed to MSMA applied in sprinkler irrigation. Average arsenic levels were highest in tomatoes exposed to 2.2 ppmw MSMA by sprinkler irrigation, and after 30 and 45 days were 0.26 ppm and 0.35 ppm, respectively. Average arsenic levels in sprinkler-irrigated crops ranged from double to triple the arsenic levels in control (untreated) crops. Atomic absorption was more sensitive than the colorimetric method and could detect smaller differences in arsenic content of samples. The average arsenic residues in soil varied from 1 to 3 ppm, but the differences could not be attributed to treatment with MSMA.

Simulated sprayer tank residues of the broadleaf weed herbicides dicamba, chlorsulfuron, and clopyralid applied alone and with the grass weed herbicides sethoxydim and diclofop on sunflower, tame mustard, and lentil, respectively, caused visible crop injury and reduced dry weight and yield. Dry weight production in the greenhouse and crop tolerance ratings in the field indicated that the grass weed herbicides enhanced crop injury from dicamba, chlorsulfuron, and clopyralid. Yield reductions in field experiments were also greater when dicamba and clopyralid were mixed with grass weed herbicides and applied on sunflower and lentil, respectively. This did not occur with chlorsulfuron applied to mustard. When mixed with simulated broadleaf weed herbicide residues, diclofop enhanced dry weight reductions and crop injury and reduced yield to a greater extent than sethoxydim. Crop tolerance ratings differentiated treatments and rates but were not a good estimate of the extent of yield loss. When broadleaf weed herbicides were applied at rates simulating sprayer tank residues alone or combined with grass weed herbicides, yield losses ranged up to 40% in sunflower, 70% in mustard, and 95% in lentil, compared to the untreated check.

The effects of caffeic, vanillic, p-coumaric, chlorogenic, and ferulic acids, ragweed parthenium (Parthenium hysterophorus L. # PTNHY) residue and extracts on the growth, ion uptake, and chlorophyll content of 3-week-old tomatoes (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. ‘Walter’) grown in the greenhouse were determined Vanillic, p-coumaric, chlorogenic, and ferulic acid at 10−3 M and parthenium extract at 0.5% (w/v) significantly reduced tomato root and shoot dry weight. Ragweed parthenium residue at 0.5% (w/w) and extract at 0.5% (w/v) significantly reduced tomato shoot and root dry weight. Leaf nitrogen content was reduced by phenolic acids (10−3 M) and ragweed parthenium extract (0.5%). Phosphorus content was reduced by all phenolic acids at 10−3 M and ragweed parthenium extract at 0.5% (w/v). In addition, p-coumaric and ferulic acids at 10−4 M reduced phosphorus content. No consistent relationship between chlorophyll content and tomato growth reduction was observed.

The Sheyenne National Grassland (SNG) is a native tall grass and mixed grass prairie located in southeastern North Dakota. Approximately half of the SNG has been invaded by leafy spurge (Euphorbia esula L.) and control methods have been limited. Many herbicides cannot be utilized at the SNG due to sandy soils (> 80%) and shallow groundwater, nor can they be applied near the western prairie fringed orchid (Platanthera praeclara Sheviak and Bowles), a federally listed threatened plant found on the SNG. Quinclorac and aminocyclopyrachlor were considered for use on the SNG but potential to enter the groundwater was unclear. Movement of quinclorac and aminocyclopyrachlor was evaluated in 70 cm soil columns that simulated field conditions from five ecological sites. Quinclorac leached further following the heavy rainfall event of 15 cm in 48 h compared to the annual precipitation of 51 cm applied over 9 wk. Quinclorac leached approximately 45 cm into the soil profile averaged over all soil types and both precipitation events but never exceeded 65 cm regardless of soil type. Aminocyclopyrachlor leaching was greater than quinclorac and moved through all soil types into the leachate following both watering regimes. Desorption of both herbicides was incomplete. Approximately 10 and 32% of applied aminocyclopyrachlor and quinclorac, respectively, remained in the top 5 cm of soil regardless of soil type or watering regime. Quinclorac but not aminocyclopyrachlor was considered suitable for use at the SNG to control leafy spurge and has the added benefit of not harming the western prairie fringed orchid.

Crowfootgrass, a C4 species, is one of the principal weeds of dry-seeded rice in Asia. Weed management decisions for this species can be derived from knowledge of its seed germination biology. Experiments were conducted in the laboratory and screenhouse to determine the effects of light, alternating day/night temperatures, water stress, seed burial depth, and rice residue on seed germination and seedling emergence of crowfootgrass and to evaluate the response of this weed to commonly available selective POST herbicides in the Philippines. Light stimulated seed germination, but it was not an absolute requirement for germination. Germination in the light/dark regime was greater at alternating day/night temperatures of 25/15 C (92%) than at 30/20 (70%) or 35/25 C (44%). The osmotic potential required for 50% inhibition of maximum germination was −0.23 MPa, although some seeds germinated at −0.6 MPa. Seedling emergence was greatest for the seeds placed on the soil surface (64%), and emergence declined with increased burial depth in soil. No seedlings emerged from a burial depth of 6 cm or greater. Seedling emergence of crowfootgrass was reduced by the addition of rice residue to the soil surface at rates equivalent to 4 to 6 Mg ha−1. Fenoxaprop-p-ethyl + ethoxysulfuron at 45 g ai ha−1 provided excellent control of crowfootgrass when applied at the four- (99%) and six-leaf (86%) stage. The information gained from this study could contribute to developing components of integrated weed management strategies for crowfootgrass. Soil inversion by tillage to bury weed seeds below their maximum depth of emergence, use of crop residue as mulch, and early application of an effective POST herbicide could serve as important tools for managing crowfootgrass.

Goosegrass is considered one of the most important grassy weeds of rice, particularly in rain-fed environments. Experiments were conducted in laboratory, screenhouse, and field to study the germination ecology of goosegrass seeds. In the laboratory, germination was greater at higher alternating temperatures (30/20 and 35/25 C) than at the lowest alternating temperatures (25/15 C). An after-ripening period of at least 3 mo was required to improve the germination of goosegrass. Germination was tolerant of salt stress but sensitive to a high degree of water stress. A pH range of 5 to 10 did not influence seed germination (92 to 95%). In the screenhouse study, seedling emergence of goosegrass was greatest (82%) for seeds placed on the soil surface, but decreased exponentially after that, no seedlings emerged at a burial depth of 8 cm. Seedling emergence and seedling dry matter declined markedly with the addition of crop residue to the soil surface at rates equivalent to 4 to 6 ton (t) ha−1. In the field, seedling emergence of goosegrass was greater under zero-till (ZT; 16 to 18%) than under minimum tillage (MINT; 8 to 11%). Because seedling emergence was greater from surface-sown seeds and emergence was favored by ZT, this species is likely to become a problematic weed in ZT systems. The information gained from this study could be used in developing effective weed management strategies.

Southern and India crabgrass are important grass weeds of rice in many tropical countries. Environmental factors influenced seed germination and seedling emergence of these weeds. Seeds of both species germinated at a range of alternating temperatures (25/15, 30/20, and 35/25 C day/night), though the germination of southern crabgrass was reduced at the lowest alternating temperatures (25/15 C). Light stimulated germination of both species; however, a small proportion of southern crabgrass seeds germinated in the dark. Germination of India crabgrass was influenced to a greater degree by increasing salt and water stresses than was southern crabgrass. Seeds of both species germinated over a wide range of pH between 5 and 10. Seedling emergence of both species (98% for southern crabgrass and 94% for India crabgrass) was greatest for seeds placed on the soil surface. Seed burial depth of 2 cm completely inhibited emergence of India crabgrass, whereas for southern crabgrass, this depth was 8 cm. Knowledge gained from this study is expected to contribute to developing components of integrated weed management strategies for these species.

Junglerice is one of the most serious grass weeds of rice in the tropics. Experiments were conducted in the laboratory and screenhouse to determine the influence of environmental factors on seed germination and seedling emergence of junglerice in the Philippines. In the laboratory, germination was stimulated by light, suggesting that seeds of this species are positively photoblastic. The tested temperatures (35/25, 30/20, and 25/15 C alternating day/night temperatures), however, did not influence germination. Germination in the laboratory was not affected by a soil pH range of 4 to 9, but was decreased by salinity (> 50 mM NaCl) and moisture stress (< −0.2 MPa osmotic potential). In the screenhouse, germination of junglerice was greatest (97%) for seeds at the soil surface, but emergence declined exponentially with increasing seed burial depth, and no seedlings emerged from seeds buried at 6 cm. In pots, seedling emergence declined markedly with the addition of rice residue to the soil surface at rates equivalent to 4 to 6 tonnes (t) ha−1. As germination of junglerice was strongly stimulated by light, and seedling emergence was optimal at shallow burial depths, this species is likely to be problematic in reduced tillage systems.
