Rate of seedling emergence, relative growth rate (RGR), and phenological development were compared in several accessions of rigid ryegrass belonging to three distinct resistance classes. The aryloxyphenoxypropionate resistant (AOPP-R) class had a faster and less variable seedling emergence than the sulfonylurea resistant (SU-R) and susceptible (S) classes. However, even the fastest of the AOPP-R accessions was within the range of the S and SU-R classes. No significant differences were detected among the resistant classes in seed dormancy, RGR, and the rate of phenological development. The rate of spike emergence, irrespective of the resistance class, was related to the latitude of the origin of the accessions, suggesting adaptation to the local climates since introduction. Due to considerable variation among weed populations for most biological attributes, the need to include several R and S accessions, in studies similar to the one reported here, is of vital importance. Because of the means and variances of the three resistance classes, at least four accessions from each resistance class would have been required to detect the observed differences between emergence rates of the AOPP-R and S classes with a confidence of 95%.

Greenhouse and field experiments were conducted to assess the effectiveness of herbicide tank mixtures for control of sulfonylurea (SU)-resistant and -susceptible kochia biotypes. Kochia control at three growth stages was evaluated for fluroxypyr, dicamba, 2,4-D, bromoxynil, and bromoxynil plus MCPA. Control decreased as kochia size increased, especially at less than full labeled herbicide rates. Treatments containing bromoxynil provided best overall control in the greenhouse but were less effective on larger kochia plants in the field. Dicamba and fluroxypyr provided similar, effective kochia control both in greenhouse and field experiments. 2,4-D did not provide acceptable kochia control regardless of formulation, rate, or application timing. All kochia biotypes responded similarly to non-SU herbicides. In the field, inclusion of an SU herbicide in the treatment generally resulted in no increased R-kochia control above that provided by the non-SU herbicide. R-kochia population dynamics can affect selection of alternative control strategies.

Field studies were conducted to examine the effects of the sulfonylurea-tolerant (ST) soybean and fall tillage on reducing rotational soybean response to soil-applied prosulfuron across a range of soil pH values. Prosulfuron (10 and 20 g ai/ha) was applied in the fall to simulate the maximum amount of carryover theoretically possible from corn weed control systems. ST soybean reduced effects of prosulfuron soil residues on soybean grain yield. Increased soil pH led to greater prosulfuron carryover as indicated by the differential in ST and non-ST soybean and grain yield responses. Tillage (chisel plow) did not decrease non-ST soybean response to prosulfuron soil residues. Soybean injury 30 d after emergence was well correlated with eventual yield losses in non-ST soybean. Greater soybean injury and yield loss was observed on a silt loam soil with 0.8% organic carbon than on silt loams with greater than 2.5% organic carbon.

A diagnostic test (Syngenta Quick-Test, QT) used for testing grass weed survivors to herbicides in the field for resistance was evaluated. Cuttings from grass weeds were transplanted into pots to regenerate new leaves, then treated with herbicide. In greenhouse experiments, resistance of known herbicide-resistant blackgrass biotypes to the aryloxyphenoxypropanoate herbicides CGA 184927 and fenoxaprop-ethyl and to the phenylurea herbicide isoproturon was verified by the QT. The findings were similar to those for seedlings grown from seed. Rigid ryegrass from suspect resistant fields in South Australia was sampled and sent by post to Switzerland for QT analysis. Resistance was confirmed in less than 4 wk, which verified resistance as responsible for the field failures. The added features of the QT over current resistance tests suggest a likely fit for in-season testing of surviving weeds and possible follow-up action.

Of 78 biotypes of wild radish (Raphanus raphanistrum) collected from Western Australia (WA), 42% were resistant and 14% intermediate to acetolactate synthase (ALS)-inhibiting herbicides. Based on the LD50 and GR50 ratios, the resistant biotype K96071 was 81-fold more resistant to chlorsulfuron and 114- to 116-fold more resistant to metosulam than the susceptible biotype K96041. More resistant biotypes were found in northern zones than in southern zones of WA. Resistant biotypes evolved after five applications of chlorsulfuron in a predominantly cereal–lupin rotation. Where resistant biotypes were found, ALS-inhibiting herbicides were not rotated with herbicides with different modes of action as frequently as in fields with susceptible biotypes. Cross-resistance to chlorsulfuron and metosulam was found in the resistant biotypes even though only 15% of the 78 biotypes were exposed to two applications of metosulam over a 10-yr period. All 78 biotypes were effectively controlled by simazine and 2,4-D amine.

Field studies were conducted in 1999 and 2000 at Simcoe, Ridgetown, and Exeter, Ontario, to evaluate the tolerance of nine sweet corn cultivars to mesotrione, applied preemergence (PRE) at 140 and 280 g ai/ha and postemergence (POST) at 100 and 200 g ai/ha. Urea ammonium nitrate fertilizer (28%) at 2.5% (v/v) and crop oil concentrate at 1% (v/v) were added to POST applications of mesotrione only. All cultivars were tolerant to mesotrione applied PRE. There was no injury, or reductions in plant height or yield with PRE applications of mesotrione at any location in either year. POST applications of mesotrione, particularly at 200 g/ha, caused significant phytotoxicity to ‘Calico Belle’ and ‘Del Monte 2038’. Other cultivars also showed phytotoxic symptoms; however, this injury was much reduced and did not occur at all locations each year. Sweet corn injury by mesotrione increased as rate increased. Del Monte 2038 also had significantly reduced plant height and yields. Other cultivars had no plant height or yield reductions because of POST applications of mesotrione.

The effect of CGA 152005 residues in the soil on six crops grown in rotation with field corn was investigated over a 2-yr period. CGA 152005 at 10, 15, 20, and 30 g ai/ha was applied postemergence (POST) to corn in 1994. CGA 152005 at 15 and 30 g ai/ha, atrazine at 1,000 g ai/ha, CGA 152005 at 15 g plus atrazine at 500 g ai/ha, and CGA 152005 at 30 g plus atrazine at 1,000 g ai/ha were applied POST to corn in 1995. Soybean, pea, cabbage, tomato, pepper, and potato were planted each spring, 1 yr after herbicide application. Cabbage exhibited injury and yield reductions that increased with increasing application rate, and pepper exhibited slight injury at the highest rate and yield reduction in 1995. Cabbage yields were reduced by CGA 152005 plus atrazine, and tomato yields were reduced by CGA 152005 and CGA 152005 plus atrazine in 1996. Yields of other crops were not affected in either year.

Eight sweet corn cultivars were evaluated for tolerance to AE F130360 in five field experiments conducted over 2 yr in Ontario. AE F130360 was applied postemergence at 70 and 140 g ai/ha, the latter rate representing a spray overlap in the field. Response to AE F130360 varied with respect to sweet corn cultivar and herbicide rate. Minimal crop injury was observed in seven of the eight cultivars. One cultivar, ‘DelMonte 2038’, was extremely sensitive, showing 94% or more injury for all site-years. Plant height of most cultivars was not negatively affected by AE F130360 treatments, with the exception of DelMonte 2038, which sustained height reductions of 78% or greater compared with the untreated control. The crop injury and height reductions that were observed in DelMonte 2038 were reflected in the marketable yields, which were reduced by 92% or more as a result of the AE F130360 treatments. Marketable yields also tended to be reduced in ‘Calico Belle’ and ‘Rival’. On the basis of marketable yields, it was concluded that ‘CNS 710’, ‘GG 222’, ‘GG 246’, ‘GH 2684’, and ‘Reveille’ have full tolerance to AE F130360, Calico Belle and Rival tend to have moderate tolerance, and DelMonte 2038 has zero tolerance to AE F130360.

Field studies were conducted in 1997 and 1998 to evaluate tolerance of nine sweet corn cultivars to CGA 152005 postemergence at 10 and 20 g ai/ha. There was a cultivar by herbicide interaction for visible plant injury, plant height, ear weight, and yield. Sweet corn injury from CGA 152005 increased as rate increased. CGA 152005 at both rates killed ‘DelMonte 2038’. ‘Eliminator’, ‘Reward’, ‘Delectable’, and ‘Reveille’ were injured (10 to 12% plant height reduction), and the remaining cultivars (‘Challenger’, ‘Krispy King’, ‘CNS 710’, and ‘GH 2690’) were tolerant to CGA 152005 at both rates.
