OH megamasers (OHMs) are luminous masers found in (ultra-)luminous infrared galaxies ([U]LIRGs). OHMs are signposts of major gas-rich mergers associated with some of the most extreme star forming regions in our universe. The dominant OH masing line, occurring at 1667 MHz, can spoof the 1420 MHz neutral hydrogen (HI) line in untargeted HI emission line surveys. While only ∼120 OHMs are currently known, HI surveys on next-generation radio telescopes, such as the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) and its precursors, will detect unprecedented numbers of OHMs. This surge in detections will not only fundamentally change what we know about the OHM population, but will also unlock our ability to implement OHMs as tracers of major mergers and extreme star formation on cosmic scales. Here we present predictions for the number of OHMs that will be detected by these surveys. We also present our novel methods for identifying these interlopers using a k-Nearest Neighbors machine learning algorithm. Preliminary data from HI surveys on precursor SKA telescopes is being used to vet and strengthen these methods as well as give us a first look at a new era in OHM science. From a detection of one of the most luminous OHMs to the discovery of a megamaser at a record-shattering redshift, these new sources are glimpses into how our understanding of the known OHM population will soon be expanding and shifting rapidly and how they will influence our understanding of galaxy evolution.

Early cosmic epochs are characterized by low metallicity and high specific star-formation rates. These conditions are dominated by massive-star feedback that may be dramatically different than the traditional model dominated by hot, thermal superwinds driven by supernova explosions. Instead, metal-poor feedback from massive stars may be radiation-dominated, with weak mechanical feedback, possibly aiding the escape of Lyα and Lyman continuum radiation. I will describe our understanding that is emerging from observations of starburst galaxies in the local universe.

By examining Herschel images in the HerMES & H-ATLAS surveys at the position of Planck Catalog of Compact Source sources we are able to determine the nature of the Planck sources. Most are simply nearby, known, dusty galaxies, while others are foreground galactic ‘cirrus’ dust. About 11% of sources, though, appear to be groups or clumps of fainter Herschel objects. Followup of a number of these indicates that they are galaxy clusters or protoclusters at z ~1-3 that contain a number of galaxies undergoing contemporaneous massive starbursts. These sources present challenges for current galaxy & cluster formation/evolution models.

Compact groups of galaxies (CGG) have revealed some interesting problems from their origin and lifetime to the evolution of their members in such dense configurations. Some authors suppose that CGG probably are the best location for AGNs in the local Universe. According to our preliminary data about 7–10% of member galaxies in Shahbazian compact groups (SHCGs) are emission-line galaxies including the broad-line AGN and the narrow emission-line galaxies. Shahbazian 355/4 is a classical Seyfert 1 galaxy at the same redshift as host group. Moreover Shahbazian 278/4 is also a broad-line AGN in an early-type galaxy. This is the first emission-line object in SHCGs. Meanwhile there is no Seyfert 1 galaxy among the spectroscopically investigated galaxies in the South compact groups, although more than 70% of the member galaxies in these groups probably have an active nucleus. The UZC- compact groups have an excess of Seyfert 2s (but not Seyfert 1s!). Further observational studies are necessary to understand such and many other questions related to the puzzle of CGG.

The Byurakan-IRAS Galaxy (BIG) sample is the result of optical identifications of IRAS PSC sources at high-galactic latitudes using the First Byurakan Survey (FBS) low-dispersion spectra. Among the 1178 objects most are spiral galaxies and many have been proved to be AGN and starburst by spectroscopic observations, as well as there is a number of ULIRGs among these objects. BIG objects contain galaxy pairs, multiples, and small groups that are subject for study on the matter of the real IR-emitter in these systems. Given that these objects are powerful IR sources, they are considered as young systems indicating high rate of evolution and starburst activity exceeding 100 Mo/yr. Spectroscopic observations show that all these systems are physical ones and we were able to measure the mutual distances and sizes for all components. Cross-correlations with the recent more accurate IR catalogues, such as 2MASS and WISE, as well as radio ones (NVSS, FIRST), provided accurate coordinates of the IR source and possibility to find the individual galaxy responsible for the IR. However, in almost half of the cases, IR position indicates the intermediate region between the components, which means that it comes from the system as a whole. Some more MW data have been matched to IR and radio to have an overall understanding on these systems. Given that these systems are mostly interacting/merging ones often containing AGN and most of them may be considered as powerful starbursts, it is possible to study starburst/activity/interaction phenomena and their interrelationship.

The vicinity of the Galactic center harbors many potential accelerators of cosmic rays (CR) that could shine in very-high-energy (VHE) γ-rays, such as pulsar wind nebulae, supernova remnants, binary systems and the central black hole Sgr A*, and is characterized by high gas density, large magnetic fields and a high rate of starburst activity similar to that observed in the core of starburst galaxies. In addition to these astrophysical sources, annihilation of putative WIMPs concentrated in the gravitational well could lead to significant high-energy emission at the Galactic center. The Galactic center region has been observed by atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes, and in particular by the H. E. S. S. array in Namibia for the last ten years above 150 GeV. This large data set, comprising more than 200 hours of observations, led to the discovery of a point-like source spatially compatible with the supermassive black hole Sgr A*, and to an extended diffuse emission, correlated with molecular clouds and attributed to the interaction of cosmic rays with the interstellar medium. Over the same time period, two starburst galaxies, namely M 82 and NGC 253, were detected at TeV energies after very deep exposures. Results from these ten years of observations of the Galactic center region and starburst galaxies at TeV energies are presented, and implications for the various very-high-energy emission mechanisms are discussed.

A summary and general analysis of optical spectroscopic data for 255 Byurakan-IRAS Galaxies (BIG) obtained with BAO 2.6m, SAO 6m, OHP 1.93m telescopes, as well as SDSS DR7, DR8, and DR9 is given. The BIG sample is the result of optical identifications of IRAS PSC sources at high-galactic latitudes using the First Byurakan Survey (FBS) low-dispersion spectra. Among the 1178 objects most are spiral galaxies and there is a number of ULIRGs. All but one have emission lines; we have discovered 68 AGN and composite spectrum objects among them and the others are mostly Starburst Galaxies (SB). All possible physical characteristics have been measured and/or calculated, including physical sizes and optical and IR/FIR luminosities. The masses have been estimated based on mass-luminosity relations for spiral galaxies. As it appears, most of these objects are giant massive galaxies. Various multiwavelength (MW) data have been retrieved from recent catalogues from X-ray to radio and MW SEDs have been built, which have been matched to their optical classifications. Luminosity evolution of these objects has been studies.

NGC 7582 is defined as a Starburst/AGN galaxy, since its optical and X-Ray spectra reveal both characteristics. In this work, we show the results of a stellar population modeling in a datacube taken with the Gemini South telescope. We found that ~ 90% of the light in the field of view is emitted by stars that are less than 1 billion years old. A strong burst occurred about ~ 6 million years ago and has nearly solar metallicity. We also found a Wolf-Rayet cluster.

NGC 404, at a distance of 3.4 Mpc, is the nearest S0 galaxy. This galaxy harbors a LINER; however, since the spectrum does not show a broad Hα emission, it is not certain that this LINER is a low luminosity AGN and its nature is still an open question. HST observations show the existence of stellar populations with an age of 3 × 108 years in the galactic bulge and with an age of 6–15 × 109 years in the galactic disk. In this work, we present an analysis of the data cube of NGC 404 obtained with the IFU (Integral Field Unity) of the GMOS (Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph) on the Gemini North telescope.

To resolve the above dilemma, two essentially different approaches are undertaken: First, a new, detailed analysis of the entire radiation spectrum of Sgr A∗, from radio band up to gamma-rays, is reviewed, which enables us to put substantial constraints on the mass of a putative black hole. The derived upper limit turns out to be too small to allow the black hole to serve as an ‘engine’ for a Seyfert galaxy. Second, analyses of recent data on the 10 KeV gas in the central 200 pc and on star formation history at the Galactic center both make a star burst the likely episode in a recent past. Taken together, the two approaches seem to indicate that the history of the central part of our Galaxy can be better described as that of a starburst, rather than a Seyfert, galaxy.
