From November 2019 to April 2020, the prototypical red supergiant Betelgeuse experienced an unexpected and historic dimming. This event was observed worldwide by astrophysicists, and also by the general public with the naked eye. We present here the results of our observing campaign with ESO’s VLT and VLTI in the visible and infrared domains. The observations with VLT/SPHERE-ZIMPOL, VLT/SPHERE-IRDIS, VLTI/GRAVITY and VLTI/MATISSE provide spatially resolved diagnostics of this event. Using PHOENIX atmosphere models and RADMC3D dust radiative transfer simulations, we built a consistent model reproducing the images and the photometry.

We report the results of 14 years of monitoring of G188.95+0.89 periodic 6.7 GHz methanol masers using the Hartebeesthoek 26-m radio telescope. G188.95+0.89 (S252, AFGL5180) is a radio-quiet methanol maser site that is often interpreted as precursors of ultra-compact HII regions or massive protostar sites. At least five bright spectral components were identified. The maser feature at 11.36 km s-1 was found to experience an exponential decay during the monitoring period. The millimetre continuum reveals two cores associated with the source.

We report the results of three VLBI observations of the pre-main-sequence star AB Doradus A at 8.4 GHz. With almost three years between consecutive observations, we found a complex structure at the expected position of this star for all epochs. Maps at epochs 2007 and 2010 show a double core-halo morphology while the 2013 map reveals three emission peaks with separations between 5 and 18 stellar radii. Furthermore, all maps show a clear variation of the source structure within the observing time. We consider a number of hypothesis in order to explain such observations, mainly: magnetic reconnection in loops on the polar cap, a more general loop scenario and a close companion to AB Dor A.

We observed the circumstellar environments (CSEs) of the semiregular AGB stars L2 Puppis, R Doradus and EP Aquarii with ALMA. (1) The molecular emission in the L2 Pup nebula reveals an edge-on rotating disk. (2) PV diagrams of the 28SiO emission in the inner CSE of R Dor expose a pattern pointing to an inclined rotating disk. (3) The CO emission in the CSE of EP Aqr reveals a nearly face-on equatorial density enhancement (EDE). The inner EDE strongly resembles theoretical wind-Roche-lobe-overflow models. The SiO emission points to a potential companion. The combination of (1), (2) and (3) suggests that a link may exist between the type of AGB pulsations and the morphological nature of the CSE.

We present very detailed images of the photosphere of an AGB star obtained with the PIONIER instrument, installed at the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI). The images show a well defined stellar disc populated by a few convective patterns. Thanks to the high precision of the observations we are able to derive the contrast and granulation horizontal scale of the convective pattern for the first time in a direct way. Such quantities are then compared with scaling relations between granule size, effective temperature, and surface gravity that are predicted by simulations of stellar surface convection.

High-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs) provide an exciting window into the underlying processes of both binary as well as massive star evolution. Because HMXBs are systems containing a compact object accreting from a high-mass star at close orbital separations they are also likely progenitors of gamma-ray bursts and gravitational wave sources. We present classification and age measurements for HMXBs in M33 using a combination of deep Chandra X-ray imaging, and archival Hubble Space Telescope data. We constrain the ages of the HMXB candidates by fitting the color-magnitude diagrams of the surrounding stars, which yield the star formation histories of the surrounding region. Unlike the age distributions measured for HMXB populations in the Magellanic Clouds, the age distribution for the HMXB population in M33 contains a number of extremely young (<5 Myr) sources. We discuss these results the context of the effect of host galaxy properties on the observed HMXB population.

The origin of the Brγ-line emission in Herbig Ae/Be stars is still an open question and might be related e.g., to a disc wind or the stellar magnetosphere. The study of the continuum and Brγ-emitting region of Herbig Ae/Be stars with high-spectral and high-spatial resolution gives great insights into the sub-au scale hydrogen gas distribution.

We observed the Herbig Be star MWC 120 with the VLTI/AMBER instrument in different spectral channels across the Brγ line with a spectral resolution of R~1500. Using radiative transfer modeling we found a radius of the line emitting region of ~0.4 au that is only two times smaller than the K-band continuum region. This is consistent with a disc wind scenario rather than an origin of magnetospheric emission.

We present near-infrared AMBER (R~12000) observations of the Herbig B[e] star MWC297 in the Brγ-line. We found that the near-infrared continuum emission is ~3.6 times more compact than the expected dust-sublimation radius, possibly indicating the presence of highly refractory dust grains or optically thick gas emission in the inner disk. Our velocity-resolved channel maps marking the first time that kinematic effects in the sub-AU inner regions of a protoplanetary disk could be directly imaged.

In order to determine the true impact of stellar multiplicity on the formation and evolution of planets, we initiated direct imaging surveys to search for (sub)stellar companions of exoplanet host stars on close orbits, as their gravitational impact on the planet bearing disk at first and on formed planets afterwards is expected to be maximal. According to theory these are the most challenging environments for planet formation and evolution but might occur quite frequently in the milky way, due to the large number of multiple stars within our galaxy. On this poster we showed results, obtained so far in the course of our AO and Lucky-imaging campaigns of exoplanet host stars, conducted with NACO/ESO-VLT for southern and with AstraLux/CAHA2.2m for northern targets, respectively. In addition, we introduced our new high contrast imaging survey with SPHERE/ESO-VLT to search for close companions of southern exoplanet host stars, and presented some first results.

One of the great challenges in time-domain astronomy is the problem of combining data obtained at various epochs with very different instruments. These problems are mostly discussed from within a specific observational mode, for example photometry, spectroscopy or imaging. This Workshop explored by example diverse pitfalls of time-domain calibration by discussing calibration and standardisation problems across various types of variables.

This presentation addressed some aspects of photometric standardisation and calibration that have a very significant effect on the accuracy of long time-baseline photometry. The difficulties were illustrated by examples of combinations of vintage photographic magnitudes with photomultiplier and CCD photometry, and with photometry from space. The case studies involved variability on time-scales of hours, years, decades and centuries. The examples went beyond classical problems of combining incongruent and ambiguous passbands, non-linear detectors and poor standardisation.

Despite its importance on late stages of the evolution of massive stars, the mass loss from red supergiants (RSGs) is a long-standing problem. To tackle this problem, it is essential to observe the wind acceleration region close to the star with high spatial resolution. While the mass loss from RSGs is often assumed to be spherically symmetric with a monotonically accelerating wind, there is mounting observational evidence that the reality is much more complex. I review the recent progress in high spatial resolution observations of RSGs, encompassing from the circumstellar envelope on rather large spatial scales (~100 stellar radii) to milliarcsecond-resolution aperture-synthesis imaging of the surface and the atmosphere of RSGs with optical and infrared long-baseline interferometers.

The formation of massive stars remains one of the most intriguing questions in astrophysics today. The main limitations result from the difficulty to obtain direct observational constraints on the formation process itself. In this context, the Carina High-contrast Imaging Project of massive Stars (CHIPS) aims to observe all 80+ O stars in the Carina nebula using the new VLT 2nd-generation extreme-AO instrument SPHERE. This instrument offers unprecedented imaging contrast allowing us to detect the faintest companions around massive stars. These novel observational constraints will help to discriminate between the different formation scenarios by comparing their predictions for companion statistics and properties.

This conference paper reports the recent discoveries of two hot Jupiters (hJs) around weak-line T Tauri stars (wTTS) V830 Tau and TAP 26, through the analysis of spectropolarimetric data gathered within the Magnetic Topologies of Young Stars and the Survival of massive close-in Exoplanets (MaTYSSE) observation programme. HJs are thought to form in the outskirts of protoplanetary discs, then migrate inwards close to their host stars as a result of either planet-disc type II migration or planet-planet scattering. Looking for hJs around young forming stars provides key information on the nature and time scale of such migration processes, as well as how their migration impacts the subsequent architecture of their planetary system. Young stars are however extremely active, to the point that their radial velocity (RV) jitter is around an order of magnitude larger than the potential signatures of close-in gas giants, making them difficult to detect with velocimetry. Three techniques to filter out this activity jitter are presented here, two using Zeeman Doppler Imaging (ZDI) and one using Gaussian Process Regression (GPR).

T-Tauri stars (TTS) are late-type pre-main-sequence (PMS) stars that are gravitationally contracting towards the MS. Those that possess a massive accretion disc are known as classical T-Tauri stars (cTTSs), and those that have exhausted the gas in their inner discs are known as weak-line T-Tauri stars (wTTSs). Magnetic fields largely dictate the angular momentum evolution of TTS and can affect the formation and migration of planets. Thus, characterizing their magnetic fields is critical for testing and developing stellar dynamo models, and trialling scenarios currently invoked to explain low-mass star and planet formation. The MaTYSSE programme (Magnetic Topologies of Young Stars and the Survival of close-in Exoplanets) aims to determine the magnetic topologies of ~30 wTTSs and monitor the long-term topology variability of ~5 cTTSs. We present several wTTSs that have been magnetically mapped thus far (using Zeeman Doppler Imaging), where we find a much wider range of field topologies compared to cTTSs and MS dwarfs with similar internal structures.

A consensus has grown in the past few decades that binarity is key to understanding the morphological diversities of the circumstellar envelopes (CSEs) surrounding stars in the Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) to Planetary Nebula (PN) phase. The possible roles of binaries in their shaping have, however, yet to be confirmed. Meanwhile, recurrent patterns are often found in the CSEs of AGB stars and the outer halos of PNe, providing a fossil record of the mass loss during the AGB phase. In this regard, recent molecular line observations using interferometric facilities have revealed the spatio-kinematics of such patterns. Numerical simulations of binary interactions producing spiral-shells have been extensively developed, revealing new probes for extracting the stellar and orbital properties from these patterns. I review recent theoretical and observational investigations on the circumstellar spiral-shell patterns and discuss their implications in linking binary properties to the asymmetric ejection events in the post-AGB phase.

Interacting binaries provide unique parameter regimes, both rapid rotation and tidal distortion, in which to test stellar dynamo theories and study the resulting magnetic activity. Close binaries such as cataclysmic variables (CVs) have been found to differentially rotate, and so can provide testbeds for tidal dissipation efficiency in stellar convective envelopes, with implications for both CV and planet-star evolution. Furthermore, CVs show evidence of preferential emergence of magnetic flux tubes towards the companion star, as well as large, long-lived prominences that form preferentially within the binary geometry. Moreover, RS CVn binaries also show clear magnetic interactions between the two components in the form of coronal X-ray emission. Here, we review several examples of magnetic interactions in different types of close binaries.

Interferometric methods have been used at a number of observatories to improve the spatial resolution of large optical telescopes, approaching and in some cases reaching the diffraction limit. The principal methods used have been speckle interferometry and non-redundant masking (NRM). The MAPPIT (Masked APerture Plane Interference Telescope) instrument has been used for NRM observations at the 3·9 m Anglo-Australian Telescope. This paper describes a proposed instrument, MAPPIT 2, which would use a Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor in parallel with an interferometer performing NRM or one-dimensional speckle interferometry. The inclusion of the data from the wavefront sensor will enhance the sensitivity of the instrument, especially for the imaging of relatively complex objects (those giving more than a few resolution elements with non-zero intensities). Limiting the instantaneous spatial resolution to one dimension allows available CCD detectors to operate with 100% duty cycle. Observations at a number of position angles allow two-dimensional images to be obtained.

In preparation for observations with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), we have identified new members of the nearby, young M dwarf sample and compiled an up to date list of these stars. Here we summarize our efforts to identify young M dwarfs, describe the current sample, and detail its demographics in the context of direct planet imaging. We also describe our investigations of the unprecedented sensitivity of the JWST when imaging nearby, young M dwarfs. The JWST is the only near term facility capable of routinely pushing direct imaging capabilities around M dwarfs to sub-Jovian masses and will provide key insight into questions regarding low-mass gas-giant properties, frequency, formation, and architectures.

To improve our understanding of the mass loss in red supergiants (RSGs), it is of paramount importance to observe the wind acceleration region close to the star with high spatial resolution. I review the recent progress in milliarcsecond-resolution imaging of the surface and atmosphere of RSGs with optical and infrared long-baseline interferometers. The high resolution images of RSGs have revealed the true face of these behemoths, which have turned out to be very complex.

Direct ultraviolet imaging and spectroscopy of Alpha Orionis (Betelgeuse) reveals variable chromospheric structures and mass motions. Spectroscopy also demonstrates the changes of wind opacity, speeds, and mass loss in luminous stars. Cool stars have complex chromospheres that need to be considered in construction of stellar atmospheric models and subsequent spectral analyses.
