Current models of stellar evolution predict that stars more massive than ∼6 M⊙ should have completely depleted all lithium (Li) in their atmospheres by the time when they reach the He core burning phase. Against this, a non-negligible number of red giants with masses ≳6 M⊙ presenting strong Li lines have recently been reported. Motivated by this finding, we have carried out a spectroscopic survey of red supergiants (RSGs) in the Perseus Arm and a selection of young open clusters in the Magellanic Clouds to assess the presence of the Li <sc>i</sc> 6708Å doublet line. Based on a sample of> 70 objects, close to one third of RSGs in the Perseus Arm display noticeable Li lines, with perhaps a trend towards a lower fraction among more luminous stars. The samples in the Magellanic Clouds are not as large, but hint at a metallicity dependence. Twenty one RSGs in 5 LMC clusters show a very high fraction of Li detection, around 40%. Conversely, 17 RSGs in 5 SMC clusters give only one secure detection. The interpretation of these observational results is not straightforward, but a mechanism for Li production seems most likely. Further characterisation work is ongoing, while theoretical studies into this matter are urgently needed.

Maser properties can be measured with milli-arcsec precision over multiple epochs using ALMA, cm- and mm-wave VLBI and e-MERLIN. This allows: (i) Tracing SiO maser proper motions in the pulsation-dominated zone; (ii) Quantifying clumpiness, variability and asymmetry of the wind traced by masers; (iii) Contrasting behaviour from OH masers even at similar distances from the star; (iv) Measuring magnetic fields. Mass lost from the star, traced by SiO masers, is likely to take decades to reach ∼5 stellar radii. At 5–50 stellar radii, once dust is well formed, 22-GHz H2O masers show the wind accelerating through the escape velocity; its overall direction is away from the star but the velocity field is complex. In a few cases (so far), highly-directed, localised ejecta are seen. Magnetic fields appear to be stellar-centred and strong enough to influence wind kinematics. Recent ALMA and other observations have shown that otherwise inconspicuous companions shape a majority of evolved star winds, whilst advanced models demonstrate how, for some situations, this is compatible with masers showing negligible rotation proper motions. The long-term monitoring achievable at radio frequencies complements the multi-transition maser studies and analysis of thermal lines and dust at shorter wavelengths.

The lowest metallicity massive stars in the Local Universe with $Z\sim \left( {{Z}_{\odot }}/50-{{Z}_{\odot }}/30 \right)$ are the crucial objects to test the validity of assumptions in the modern models of very low-metallicity massive star evolution. These models, in turn, have major implications for our understanding of galaxy and massive star formation in the early epochs. DDO68-V1 in a void galaxy DDO68 is a unique extremely metal-poor massive star. Discovered by us in 2008 in the HII region Knot3 with $Z={{Z}_{\odot }}/35\,\left[ 12+\log \left( \text{O/H} \right)\sim 7.14 \right]$, DDO68-V1 was identified as an LBV star. We present here the LBV lightcurve in V band, combining own new data and the last archive and/or literature data on the light of Knot3 over the 30 years. We find that during the years 2008-2011 the LBV have experienced a very rare event of ‘giant eruption’ with V-band amplitude of 4.5 mag ($V\sim {{24.5}^{m}}-{{20}^{m}}$).

Determining the star formation history (SFH) is key to understand the formation and evolution of dwarf galaxies. Recovering the SFH in resolved galaxies is mostly based on deep colour–magnitude diagrams (CMDs), which trace the signatures of multiple evolutionary stages of their stellar populations. In distant and unresolved galaxies, the integrated light of the galaxy can be decomposed, albeit made difficult by an age–metallicity degeneracy. Another solution to determine the SFH of resolved galaxies is based on evolved stars; these luminous stars are the most accessible tracers of the underlying stellar populations and can trace the entire SFH. Here we present a novel method based on long period variable (LPV) evolved asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars and red supergiants (RSGs). We applied this method to reconstruct the SFH for IC1613, an irregular dwarf galaxy at a distance of 750 kpc. Our results provide an independent confirmation that no major episode of star formation occurred in IC1613 over the past 5 Gyr.

Supergiant X-ray Binaries host a compact object, generally a neutron star, orbiting an evolved O/B star. Mass transfer proceeds through the intense radiatively-driven wind of the stellar donor, a fraction of which is captured by the gravitational field of the neutron star. The subsequent accretion process onto the neutron star is responsible for the abundant X-ray emission from those systems. They also display variations in time of the X-ray flux by a factor of a few 10, along with changes in the hardness ratios believed to be due to varying absorption along the line-of-sight. We used the most recent results on the inhomogeneities (aka clumps) in the non-stationary wind of massive hot stars to evaluate their impact on the time-variable accretion process. We ran three-dimensional simulations of the wind in the vicinity of the accretor to witness the formation of the bow shock and follow the inhomogeneous flow over several spatial orders of magnitude, down to the neutron star magnetosphere. In particular, we show that the impact of the clumps on the time-variability of the intrinsic mass accretion rate is severely damped by the crossing of the shock, compared to the purely ballistic Bondi-Hoyle-Lyttleton estimation. We also account for the variable absorption due to clumps passing by the line-of-sight and estimate the final effective variability of the mass accretion rate for different orbital separations. These results are confronted to recent analysis of Vela X-1 observations with Chandra by Grinberg et al. (2017). It shows that clumps account well for time-variability at low luminosity but can not generate, per se, the high luminosity activity observed.

. The INTEGRAL satellite has revealed a previously hidden population of absorbed High Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) hosting supergiant (SG) stars. Among them, IGR J16320–4751 is a classical system intrinsically obscured by its environment, with a column density of ~1023 cm-2, more than an order of magnitude higher than the interstellar absorption along the line of sight. It is composed of a neutron star (NS) rotating with a spin period of ~1300 s, accreting matter from the stellar wind of an O8I SG, with an orbital period of ~9 days. We analyzed all existing archival XMM- Newton and Swift/BAT observations of the obscured HMXB IGR J16320–4751 performing a detailed temporal and spectral analysis of the source along its orbit. Using a typical model for the supergiant wind profile, we simultaneously fitted the evolution of the hard X-ray emission and intrinsic column density along the full orbit of the NS around the SG, which allowed us to constrain physical and geometrical parameters of the binary system.

With red supergiants (RSGs) predicted to end their lives as Type IIP core collapse supernova (CCSN), their behaviour before explosion needs to be fully understood. Mass loss rates govern RSG evolution towards SN and have strong implications on the appearance of the resulting explosion. To study how the mass-loss rates change with the evolution of the star, we have measured the amount of circumstellar material around 19 RSGs in a coeval cluster. Our study has shown that mass loss rates ramp up throughout the lifetime of an RSG, with more evolved stars having mass loss rates a factor of 40 higher than early stage RSGs. Interestingly, we have also found evidence for an increase in circumstellar extinction throughout the RSG lifetime, meaning the most evolved stars are most severely affected. We find that, were the most evolved RSGs in NGC2100 to go SN, this extra extinction would cause the progenitor’s initial mass to be underestimated by up to 9M⊙.

Thanks to incredible advances in instrumentation, surveys like the Sloan Digital Sky Survey have been able to find and catalog billions of objects, ranging from local M dwarfs to distant quasars. Machine learning algorithms have greatly aided in the effort to classify these objects; however, there are regimes where these algorithms fail, where interesting oddities may be found. We present here an X-ray bright quasar misidentified as a red supergiant/X-ray binary, and a subsequent search of the SDSS quasar catalog for X-ray bright stars misidentified as quasars.

We present here a modern study of the radial velocity curve and of the photometric light curve of the very interesting supergiant O7.5If + O9I(f) binary system HD 166734. The physical parameters of the stars and the orbital parameters are carefully determined. We also perform the analysis of the observed X-ray light curve of this colliding-wind binary.

The red supergiant phase is an important phase of the evolution of massive star, as it mostly determines its final stages. One of the most important driver of the evolution during this phase is mass loss. However, the mass-loss rates prescription used for red supergiants in current stellar evolution models are still very inaccurate.

Varying the mass-loss rate makes the star evolve for some time in yellow/blue regions of the HRD, modifying the number of RSGs in some luminosity ranges. Figure 1 shows how the luminosity distribution of RSGs is modified for various mass-loss prescriptions. This illustrates that it is theoretically possible to determine at least roughly what is the typical mass loss regime of RSGs in a stellar evolution perspective.

The first stellar generation in galactic globular clusters contained massive low-metallicity stars (Charbonnel et al. 2014). We modelled the evolution of this massive stellar population and found that such stars with masses 100-600 M⊙ evolve into cool RSGs (Szécsi et al. 2015). These RSGs spend not only the core-He-burning phase but even the last few 105 years of the core-H-burning phase on the SG branch. Due to the presence of hot massive stars in the cluster at the same time, we show that the RSG wind is trapped into photoionization confined shells (Mackey et al. 2014). We simulated the shell formation around such RSGs and find them to become gravitationally unstable (Szécsi et al. 2016). We propose a scenario in which these shells are responsible for the formation of the second generation low-mass stars in globular clusters with anomalous surface abundances.

We present the new interpretation of the oscillation spectrum of HD 163899 based on the new determinations of the effective temperature, mass-luminosity ratio and rotational velocity. These new parameters strongly prefer the more massive models than previously considered. Now it is also possible that the star could be in the main sequence stage. Using the oscillation spectrum as a gauge, we intend to establish which stage of evolution corresponds better to HD 163899.

The evolution of massive stars after the main sequence is not very well known from a theoretical point of view. Recent studies have shown that the way internal mixing processes, such as rotation and convection, are implemented in stellar evolution codes lead to significant discrepancies between the predictions of these codes. Particularly, the end-points of stellar evolution can be considerably different, making hard to understand the evolutionary path the lead to the observed supernovae progenitors.

Direct ultraviolet imaging and spectroscopy of Alpha Orionis (Betelgeuse) reveals variable chromospheric structures and mass motions. Spectroscopy also demonstrates the changes of wind opacity, speeds, and mass loss in luminous stars. Cool stars have complex chromospheres that need to be considered in construction of stellar atmospheric models and subsequent spectral analyses.

We present an influence of mass loss, element diffusion and convective overshooting on instability areas of SPBsg stars with masses of 13 - 18 M⊙. Evolutionary phases before and after helium core ignition are considered. We discuss how these effects affect the structure of the blue loops and hence a coverage of instability areas.

HD 202850 is a late B-type supergiant. It is known that photospheric lines of such stars vary. Due to macroturbulence the lines are much wider than expected. Macroturbulence has been linked to stellar pulsations. It has been reported that there are several B supergiants that undergo pulsations. In our previous work, we detected a pulsational period of 1.59 hours in this object from data taken with the Ondřejov 2-m telescope. We continued to investigate this object and we took several time series with the DAO 1.2-m telescope. Our new data suggest that there may be some additional pulsational periods in this star. We present our new results in this poster.

We present results of pulsation analyses of B-type supergiant models with masses of 14 – 18 M⊙, considering evolutionary stages before and after helium core ignition. Using a non-adiabatic pulsation code, we compute instability domains for low-degree modes. For selected models in these two evolutionary phases, we compare properties of pulsation modes. Significant differences are found in oscillation spectra and the kinetic energy density of pulsation modes.

Stars consume hydrogen in their interiors but, generally speaking, their surfaces continue to contain some 70% hydrogen (by mass) throughout their lives. Nevertheless, many types of star can be found with hydrogen-deficient surfaces, in some cases with as little as one hydrogen atom in 10 000. Amongst these, the luminous B- and A-type extreme helium stars are genuinely rare; only ~15 are known within a very substantial volume of the Galaxy.

Evidence from surface composition suggests a connection to the cooler R CrB variables and some of the hotter helium-rich subdwarf O stars. Arguments currently favour an origin in the merger of two white dwarfs; thus there are also connections with AM CVn variables and Type Ia supernovae. Pulsations in many extreme helium stars provide an opportune window into their interiors. These pulsations have unusual properties, some being “strange” modes, and others being driven by Z-bump opacities. They have the potential to deliver distance-independent masses and to provide a unique view of pulsation physics.

We review the evolutionary origin and pulsations of these stars, and introduce recent progress and continuing challenges.

Atmospheric parameters of the Galactic early B-supergiant HD 198478 (55 Cyg) were determined from the UV silicon lines and optical Balmer Hδ 4101 Å line. TLUSTY synthetic spectra were broadened using the ROTIN numerical code in order to determine effective temperature, surface gravity, rotational and macroturbulent velocity.

The supergiant star Alpha Orionis (Betelgeuse) is the only star other than the Sun to be spatially resolved either through direct imaging or through reconstruction of interferometric observations. Centimeter-radio wavelength, infrared and ultraviolet images reveal a few bright hot spots in the photosphere and chromosphere that possess characteristics different from sunspots. Large photospheric spots on Betelgeuse appear to result from convective motions, consistent with radiative hydrodynamic modeling; the chromospheric hot spots may be produced by shock waves in the chromosphere excited by the convective motions or pulsation in the photosphere. Bright chromospheric spots that cluster around the pole of Betelgeuse could be a natural result of shock breakout in a rotating star.
