We investigate the influence of vortices remote from the boundary on the near-wall flow dynamics in wall-bounded flows. A vortex ring with precisely controlled local twist is introduced into the outer layer of a channel flow at a moderate Reynolds number. We find that the minimum vorticity flux for triggering the transition to turbulence is significantly reduced from the initial disturbance of an untwisted vortex ring to that of a twisted ring. In particular, the latter disturbance can cause vortex bursting in the early transitional stage. The impact of vortex bursting on the transition process is characterised by the near-wall, wall-normal velocity with the rapid distortion theory. The wall-normal velocity grows during vortex bursting, and leads to streak formation and then the transition to turbulence. The notable wall-normal velocity is induced by the large di-vorticity generated in vortex bursting. We model the growing radial component of the di-vorticity in terms of the local twist, and demonstrate that its surge is due to the generation of highly twisted vortex lines in vortex bursting. Then, we derive that the generation of the di-vorticity in the outer layer enhances the wall-normal velocity in the inner layer via the Poisson equation with the image method and the multipole expansion. Thus, we elucidate that the vortex bursting can have an effect on the transition process.

We derive the spin Euler equation for ideal flows by applying the spherical Clebsch mapping. This equation is based on the spin vector, a unit vector field encoding vortex lines, instead of the velocity. The spin Euler equation enables a feasible Lagrangian study of fluid dynamics, as the isosurface of a spin-vector component is a vortex surface and material surface in ideal flows. We establish a non-blowup criterion for the spin Euler equation, suggesting that the Laplacian of the spin vector must diverge if the solution forms a singularity at some finite time. The direct numerical simulations (DNS) of three ideal flows – the vortex knot, the vortex link and the modified Taylor–Green flow – are conducted by solving the spin Euler equation. The evolution of the Lagrangian vortex surface illustrates that the regions with large vorticity are rapidly stretched into spiral sheets. The DNS result exhibits a pronounced double-exponential growth of the maximum norm of Laplacian of the spin vector, showing no evidence of the finite-time singularity formation if the double-exponential growth holds at later times. Moreover, the present criterion with Lagrangian nature appears to be more sensitive than the Beale–Kato–Majda criterion in detecting the flows that are incapable of producing finite-time singularities.

Over the last decade, substantial progress has been made in understanding the topology of quasi-two-dimensional (2-D) non-equilibrium fluid flows driven by ATP-powered microtubules and microorganisms. By contrast, the topology of three-dimensional (3-D) active fluid flows still poses interesting open questions. Here, we study the topology of a spherically confined active flow using 3-D direct numerical simulations of generalized Navier–Stokes (GNS) equations at the scale of typical microfluidic experiments. Consistent with earlier results for unbounded periodic domains, our simulations confirm the formation of Beltrami-like bulk flows with spontaneously broken chiral symmetry in this model. Furthermore, by leveraging fast methods to compute linking numbers, we explicitly connect this chiral symmetry breaking to the entanglement statistics of vortex lines. We observe that the mean of linking number distribution converges to the global helicity, consistent with the asymptotic result by Arnold [In Vladimir I. Arnold – Collected Works (ed. A.B. Givental, B.A. Khesin, A.N. Varchenko, V.A. Vassiliev & O.Y. Viro), pp. 357–375. Springer]. Additionally, we characterize the rate of convergence of this measure with respect to the number and length of observed vortex lines, and examine higher moments of the distribution. We find that the full distribution is well described by a k-Gamma distribution, in agreement with an entropic argument. Beyond active suspensions, the tools for the topological characterization of 3-D vector fields developed here are applicable to any solenoidal field whose curl is tangent to or cancels at the boundaries of a simply connected domain.

Plane unsteady potential flows of an ideal incompressible fluid with a free boundary are considered in the absence of external forces and surface tension. Examples of exact solutions in situations where the entire boundary of the domain occupied by the fluid is completely free are constructed. There may be polar singularities of the complex velocity function inside the fluid, which corresponds to the presence of a source or a sink there.

We review the progress on the applications of the vortex-surface field (VSF). The VSF isosurface is a vortex surface consisting of vortex lines. Based on the generalized Helmholtz theorem, the VSF isosurfaces of the same threshold at different times have strong coherence. As a general flow diagnostic tool for studying vortex evolution, the numerical VSF solution is first constructed in a given flow field by solving a pseudo-transport equation driven by the instantaneous frozen vorticity, and then the VSF evolution is calculated by the two-time method. From the database of numerical simulations or experiments, the VSF can elucidate mechanisms in the flows with essential vortex dynamics, such as isotropic turbulence, wall flow transition, flow past a flapping plate and turbulence–flame interaction. The characterization of VSFs reveals the correlation between robust statistical features and the critical quantities needed to be predicted in engineering applications, such as the friction coefficient in transition, thrust in bio-propulsion and growth rate in interface instability. Since the VSF evolution captures the essential Lagrangian-based dynamics of vortical flows, it inspires novel numerical methods on cutting-edge hardware, e.g. graphic and quantum processors.

Helicity, an invariant under ideal-fluid (Euler) evolution, has a topological interpretation in terms of writhe and twist for a closed vortex tube, but accurately quantifying twist is challenging in viscous flows. With a novel helicity decomposition, we present a framework to construct the differential twist that establishes the theoretical relation between the total twisting number and the local twist rate of each vortex surface. This framework can characterize coiling vortex lines and internal structures within a vortex – important in laminar–turbulence transition, and in vortex instability, reconnection and breakdown. As a typical example, we explore the dynamics of vortex rings with differential twist via direct numerical simulation (DNS) of the Navier–Stokes equations. Two twist waves with opposite chiralities propagate towards each other along the ring and then collide whence the local twist rate rapidly surges. Local vortex surfaces are squeezed into a disk-like dipole structure containing coiled vortex lines, leading to vortex bursting. We derive a Burgers-equation-like model to quantify this process, which predicts a bursting time that agrees well with DNS.

In this note we provide an analytical proof of the zero helicity condition for systems governed by the Gross–Pitaevskii equation (GPE). The proof is based on the hydrodynamic interpretation of the GPE, and the direct use of Noether's theorem by applying Kleinert's multi-valued gauge theory. As a by-product we also demonstrate the conservation and quantization of the circulation for the GPE.

Instantaneous features of three-dimensional velocity fields are most directly visualized via streamsurfaces. It is generally unclear, however, which streamsurfaces one should pick for this purpose, given that infinitely many such surfaces pass through each point of the flow domain. Exceptions to this rule are vector fields with a non-degenerate first integral whose level surfaces globally define a continuous, one-parameter family of streamsurfaces. While generic vector fields have no first integrals, their vortical regions may admit local first integrals over a discrete set of streamtubes, as Hamiltonian systems are known to do over Cantor sets of invariant tori. Here we introduce a method to construct such first integrals approximately from velocity data, and show that their level sets indeed frame vortical features of the velocity field in examples in which those features are known from Lagrangian analysis. Moreover, we test our method in numerical datasets, including a flow inside a V-junction and a turbulent channel flow. For the latter, we propound an algorithm to pin down the most salient barriers to momentum transport up to a given scale providing a way out of the occlusion conundrum that typically accompanies other vortex visualization methods.

We propose the helicity-conserved Navier–Stokes (HCNS) equation by modifying the non-ideal force term in the Navier–Stokes (NS) equation. The corresponding HCNS flow has strict helicity conservation, and retains major NS dynamics with finite dissipation. Using the helical wave decomposition, we show that the pentadic interaction of Fourier helical modes in the HCNS dynamics is more complex than the triadic interaction in the NS dynamics, and enhanced variations for left- and right-handed helicity components cancel each other in the HCNS flow to keep the invariant helicity. A comparative study of HCNS and NS flow evolutions with direct numerical simulation elucidates the influence of the helicity conservation on flow structures and statistics in the vortex reconnection and isotropic turbulence. First, the HCNS flow evolves towards a Beltrami state with a $-4$ scaling law of the energy spectrum at high wavenumbers at long times. Second, large-scale flow structures are almost identical during the viscous reconnection of vortex tubes in the two flows, whereas many more small-scale helical structures are generated via the pentadic mode interaction in the HCNS flow than in the NS flow. Moreover, we demonstrate that parity breaking at small scales can trigger a notable helicity variation in the NS flow. These findings hint that the helicity may not be conserved in the inviscid limit of the NS flow.

In this paper, we determine the instability effects of a phase twist superposed on a quantum vortex defect governed by the Gross–Pitaevskii equation. For this, we consider the modified form of the equation in two cases: when a uniform phase twist is present everywhere in the condensate, and when the defect is subject to a localized phase twist confined to the defect healing region. In the first case, we show that a secondary, new defect is produced as manifestation of an Aharonov–Bohm type effect. In the second case, we prove that due to energy minimization, the defect changes its configurational energy by converting localized twist to writhe. This mechanism, typical of classical elastic systems, is shown to occur also in quantum defects, and it may find useful applications in science and technology.

Topological transition and helicity conversion of vortex torus knots and links are studied using direct numerical simulations of the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations. We find three topological transitional routes (viz. merging, reconnection and transition to turbulence) in the evolution of vortex knots and links over a range of torus aspect ratios and winding numbers. The topological transition depends not only on the initial topology but also on the initial geometry of knots/links. For small torus aspect ratios, the initially knotted or linked vortex tube rapidly merges into a vortex ring with a complete helicity conversion from the writhe and link components to the twist. For large torus aspect ratios, the vortex knot or link is untied into upper and lower coiled loops via the first vortex reconnection, with a helicity fluctuation including loss of writhe and link, and generation of twist. Then, the relatively unstable lower loop can undergo a secondary reconnection to split into multiple small vortices with a similar helicity fluctuation. Surprisingly, for moderate torus aspect ratios, the incomplete reconnection of tangled vortex loops together with strong vortex interactions triggers transition to turbulence, in which the topological helicity decomposition fails due to the breakdown of vortex core lines.

Using an improved numerical code we investigate the creation and evolution of quantum knots and links as defects of the Gross–Pitaevskii equation. The particular constraints put on quantum hydrodynamics make this an ideal context for application of geometric and topological methods to investigate dynamical properties. Evolutionary processes are classified into three generic scenarios representing (i) direct topological cascade and collapse, (ii) structural and topological cycles, and (iii) inverse topological cascade of complex structures. Several examples and test cases are studied; the head-on collision of quantum vortex rings and the creation of a trefoil knot from initially unlinked, unknotted loops are realized for the first time. Each type of scenario is studied by carrying out a detailed evaluation of fundamental geometric and dynamical properties associated with evolution. Direct topological cascade that governs the decay of complex structures to small-scale vortex rings is identified by writhe measures, while picks of total curvature are found to provide a clear signature of reconnection events. We demonstrate that isophase minimal surfaces spanning knots and links have a privileged role in the decay process by detecting surface energy relaxation of complex structures. Minimal surfaces are shown to be critical markers for energy and prove to be appropriate detectors for the evolution of complex systems.

We explore the two-dimensional flow past a cylinder undergoing forced transversal oscillations with the aim of elucidating the evolution of the topology of the wake under variation of the forcing amplitude at a Reynolds number of 100. In particular, we study the change from two single vortices (2S mode) to a pair and a single vortex ($\text {P}+ \text {S}$ mode) being shed per period. Matharu et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 918, 2021, p. A21) showed that a dynamical symmetry-breaking pitchfork bifurcation plays a key role in this transition. We show that in addition to this bifurcation, a number of topological bifurcations in the vorticity field occur, both on the symmetric 2S branch and on the asymmetric $\text {P}+ \text {S}$ branch. The topological bifurcations are cusp bifurcations where an extremum of vorticity is created or destroyed. To describe the effect of the topological bifurcations we introduce an extended symbolic classification of the wake modes to account for the spatial variations of the vortex patterns that occur in the transition process. We identify four amplitude values that define critical stages in the transition, and provide a complete qualitative picture of the transition from 2S to $\text {P}+ \text {S}$ mode. We confirm the robustness of the observed transition process by simulations at Reynolds number 80.

We present an experimental study of gravity currents in a cylindrical geometry, in the presence of vegetation. Forty tests were performed with a brine advancing in a fresh water ambient fluid, in lock release, and with a constant and time-varying flow rate. The tank is a circular sector of angle $30^\circ$ with radius equal to 180 cm. Two different densities of the vegetation were simulated by vertical plastic rods with diameter $D=1.6\ \textrm{cm}$. We marked the height of the current as a function of radius and time and the position of the front as a function of time. The results indicate a self-similar structure, with lateral profiles that after an initial adjustment collapse to a single curve in scaled variables. The propagation of the front is well described by a power law function of time. The existence of self-similarity on an experimental basis corroborates a simple theoretical model with the following assumptions: (i) the dominant balance is between buoyancy and drag, parameterized by a power law of the current velocity $\sim |u|^{\lambda-1}u$; (ii) the current advances in shallow-water conditions; and (iii) ambient-fluid dynamics is negligible. In order to evaluate the value of ${\lambda}$ (the only tuning parameter of the theoretical model), we performed two additional series of measurements. We found that $\lambda$ increased from 1 to 2 while the Reynolds number increased from 100 to approximately $6\times10^3$, and the drag coefficient and the transition from $\lambda=1$ to $\lambda=2$ are quantitatively affected by D, but the structure of the model is not.

We consider the dynamics of a two-dimensional incompressible perfect fluid on a Möbius strip embedded in $\mathbb {R}^{3}$. The vorticity–stream function formulation of the Euler equations is derived from an exterior-calculus form of the momentum equation. The non-orientability of the Möbius strip and the distinction between forms and pseudo-forms this introduces lead to unusual properties: a boundary condition is provided by the conservation of circulation along the single boundary of the strip, and there is no integral conservation for the vorticity density or for any odd function thereof. A finite-difference numerical implementation is used to illustrate the Möbius-strip realisation of familiar phenomena: translation of vortices along boundaries, shear instability and decaying turbulence.

We investigate vortex pair interactions at low Reynolds numbers. We base our analysis on the Q-criterion, where a vortex is defined as a region where the local rotation dominates the strain, and we make use of a topological approach to describe the qualitative changes of the vortex structure. In order to give a complete description of vortex pair interactions we further develop a general bifurcation theory for $Q$-vortices and prove that a threshold for vortex merging may occur when we allow two parameters to vary. To limit the number of free parameters, we study the interactions with two point vortices as the initial condition and show that the threshold is a codimension two bifurcation that appears as a cusp singularity on a bifurcation curve. We apply the general theory to the analytically tractable core growth model and conclude that a pair of co-rotating vortices merge only if their strength ratio, $\alpha =\varGamma _1/\varGamma _2$ is less than $4.58$. Below this threshold value, we observe two different regimes in which the merging processes can be described with different sequences of bifurcations. By comparison with Navier–Stokes simulations at different Reynolds numbers, we conclude that the merging threshold varies only slightly for Reynolds numbers up to $100$. Furthermore, we observe an excellent agreement between the core growth model and the numerical simulations for Reynolds numbers below 10. We therefore conclude that, instead of solving the Navier–Stokes equation numerically we can, for sufficiently small Reynolds numbers, apply the core growth model as a simple, analytically tractable model with a low dimension.

An informal introduction is provided to a range of topics in fluid dynamics having a topological character. These topics include flows with boundary singularities, Lagrangian chaos, frozen-in fields, magnetohydrodynamic analogies, fast- and slow-dynamo mechanisms, magnetic relaxation, minimum-energy states, knotted flux tubes, vortex reconnection and the finite-time singularity problem. The paper concludes with a number of open questions concerning the above topics.

Extreme events in turbulent flow are associated with intense stretching of concentrated vortices, intermittent in both space and time. The occurrence of such events has been investigated in a turbulent flow driven by counter-rotating propellors (Debue et al., J. Fluid Mech., 2021), and local flow structures have been identified. Interesting theoretical problems arise in relation to this work; these are briefly considered in this focus paper.

We report a knot cascade of magnetic field lines through the stepwise reconnection of a pair of orthogonal helical flux tubes with opposite chirality. The magnetic-surface field is developed to identify the evolution of flux tubes and pinpoint the reconnection region. We find that the incipient X-type magnetic reconnection generates antiparallel U-shaped field lines moving in opposite directions away from the plasmoid. This reconnection is characterized by the decay of the magnetic flux through the diagonal symmetric planes. Subsequently, overhand magnetic knots are tied via the secondary reconnection, coinciding with the notable conversion from magnetic energy to kinetic energy. The knotted field lines are then rotated and stretched in the plasmoid by the vortical-like local motion induced by the magnetic knots themselves via the Lorentz force. This nonlinear evolution triggers the tertiary reconnection to form double overhand knots, and then further reconnections to produce more complex knots. From field lines extracted at different times, the knot cascade via the sequence of reconnections in a finite time period is quantified by the increment of the minimum crossing number and the migration of the probability density function of the Alexander–Briggs notation. Finally, the knot cascade slows down and then terminates due to resistive and viscous dissipations.

Given a passive tracer distribution $f(x,y)$, what is the simplest unstirred pattern that may be reached under incompressible advection? This question is partially motivated by recent studies of three-dimensional (3-D) magnetic reconnection, in which the patterns of a topological invariant called the field line helicity greatly simplify until reaching a relaxed state. We test two approaches: a variational method with minimal constraints, and a magnetic relaxation scheme where the velocity is determined explicitly by the pattern of $f$. Both methods achieve similar convergence for simple test cases. However, the magnetic relaxation method guarantees a monotonic decrease in the Dirichlet seminorm of $f$, and is numerically more robust. We therefore apply the latter method to two complex mixed patterns modelled on the field line helicity of 3-D magnetic braids. The unstirring separates $f$ into a small number of large-scale regions determined by the initial topology, which is well preserved during the computation. Interestingly, the velocity field is found to have the same large-scale topology as $f$. Similarity to the simplification found empirically in 3-D magnetic reconnection simulations supports the idea that advection is an important principle for field line helicity evolution.
