The cable-driven parallel mechanism (CDPM) is known as an interesting application in industry to pick and place objects owing to its advantages such as large workspaces. In addition to the advantages of this mechanism, there are some challenges to improving performance by considering constraints in different components, such as the behavior of cables, shape, size of the end effector and base, and model of pulleys and actuators. Moreover, the impact of online geometry reconfiguration must be analyzed. This paper demonstrates the impact of these constraints on the performance of reconfigurable CDPM. The methodology is based on the systematic review and meta-analysis guidelines to report the results. The databases used to find the papers are extracted from Scopus and Google Scholar, using related keywords. As a result, the impact of physical constraints on system performance is discussed. A total of 90 and 37 articles are selected, respectively. After removing duplicates and unrelated papers, 88 studies that met the inclusion criteria are selected for review. Even when considering the physical constraints in modeling the mechanism, simplifications in designing a model for the reconfigurable CDPM generate errors. There is a gap in designing high-performance controllers to track desired trajectories while reconfiguring the geometry, and the satisfaction of physical constraints needs to be satisfied. In conclusion, this review presents several constraints in designing a controller to track desired trajectories and improve performance in future work. This paper presents an integrated controller architecture that includes physical constraints and predictive control.

Continuum robot-based surgical systems are becoming an effective tool for minimally invasive surgery. A flexible, dexterous, and compact robot structure is suitable for carrying out complex surgical operations. In this paper, we propose performance metrics for dexterity based on data density. Data density at a point in the workspace is higher if the number of reachable points is higher, with a unique configuration lying in a small square box around a point. The computation of these metrics is performed with forward kinematics using the Monte Carlo method and, hence, is computationally efficient. The data density at a particular point is a measure of dexterity at that point. In contrast, the dexterity distribution property index is a measure of how well dexterity is distributed across the workspace according to desired criteria. We compare the dexterity distribution property index across the workspace with the dexterity index based on the dexterous solid angle and manipulability-based approach. A comparative study reveals that the proposed method is simple and straightforward because it uses only the position of the reachable point as the input parameter. The method can quantify and compare the performance of different geometric designs of hyper-redundant and multisegment continuum robots based on dexterity.

The axial offset joint has two rotating axes that do not intersect but have a specific offset in space. It is used widely in parallel manipulators (PMs). The offset-joint workspace can directly affect the PM workspace. This study performed a theoretical derivation and workspace analysis of a class of axial offset joints. First, a theoretical parametric model describing the rotation range of the offset joint is established that considers the interference of the offset joint because of the contact between the upper- and lower-joint brackets during movement. Second, the analytical expressions of the offset-joint workspace are formulated based on the coordinate system transformation. The offset-joint workspace is theoretically calculated in this study using formulations. Then, through a comparative analysis, the superiority of the offset joint compared with the universal joint is verified. The theoretical formulations in this paper can be used to calculate the workspace of a class of axial offset joints. Finally, based on a workspace analysis of three types of PMs using offset, universal, and spherical joints, the offset-joint PM workspace is much larger than those of the other two types.

Productivity can be increased by manipulators tracking the desired trajectory with some constraints. Humans as moving obstacles in a shared workspace are one of the most challenging problems for cable-driven parallel mechanisms (CDPMs) that are considered in this research. One of the essential primary issues in CDPM is collision avoidance among cables and humans in the shared workspace. This paper presents a model and simulation of a reconfigurable, fully constrained CDPM enabling detection and avoidance of cable–human collision. In this method, unlike conventional CDPMs where the attachment points are fixed, the attachment points on the rails can be moved (up and down on their rails), and then the geometric configuration is adapted. Karush–Kuhn–Tucker method is proposed, which focuses on estimating the shortest distance among moving obstacles (human limbs) and all cables. When cable and limbs are close to colliding, the new idea of reconfiguration is presented by moving the cable’s attachment point on the rail to increase the distance between the cables and human limbs while they are both moving. Also, the trajectory of the end effector remains unchanged. Some simulation results of reconfiguration theory as a new approach are shown for the eight-cable-driven parallel manipulator, including the workspace boundary variation. The proposed method could find a collision-free predefined path, according to the simulation results.

An approach for calculating the effective workspaces of parallel mechanisms has been considered in this paper. The effective workspace is a set of reachable by the end-effector points, where an important parameter (or parameters) from the point of view of operation is not higher than critical. In this article, the speed and torque in the drive and the stiffness of the mechanism are considered as such parameters. An approach to determining the appropriate effective workspace is presented for each parameter. The optimization process, which is based on presented methods, allows one to choose basic technical solutions of the designed robot: the links (lengths and cross-sections), the drives, and types of hinges, which guarantee its operability at the specified operational characteristics. Case studies of a delta robot with four degrees of freedom and a planar five-bar mechanism are presented for testing these approaches. The presented methods are of great practical importance because it uses movement parameters or operational characteristics that are decisive for this mechanism and have clear physical meaning.

In study this paper, a geometric formulation is proposed to describe the workspace of parallel manipulators by using a recursive approach as an extension of volume generation for solids of revolution. In this approach, the workspace volume and boundary for each limb of the parallel manipulator is obtained with an algebraic formulation derived from the kinematic chain of the limb and the motion constraints on its joints. Then, the overall workspace of the mechanism can be determined as the intersection of the limb workspaces. The workspace of different kinematic chains is discussed and classified according to its external shape. An algebraic formulation for the inclusion of obstacles in the computation is also proposed. Both analytical models and numerical simulations are reported with their advantages and limitations. An example on a 3-SPR parallel mechanism illustrates the feasibility of the formulation and its efficiency.

In Italy, living close to or even within a place of business is not in and of itself unusual. Forms of housing in Italy are similar to many other European countries in that people primarily live in mixed-use spaces. It is common to have an apartment above cafés, bars, and bakeries. In this article, I examine how this form of mixed-use residence shapes market practices, decision-making, and labour relations among owners and workers. I argue that the spaces in which employees participate in the market economy also mirror their commitments to family. By examining workspaces across two food certifications in Milan, Italy – a Made in Italy certification (Food Italy) and a halal certification (Halal Italia) – I argue that Italian kinship networks structure how workers in each business operate. This intervention contributes to a larger literature on the cultural dimensions of capitalism.

A 3-RRPRR variable spherical symmetrical parallel mechanism (PM) with arc-shaped sliding pairs and no parasitic motion is presented, exhibiting two rotational and one translational (2R1T) degrees of freedom. Three limbs are symmetrically distributed between the base and end-effector; upper and lower parts of each limb are mirror symmetrical around the middle. The geometry, mobility, forward/inverse kinematics, workspace, and parasitic motion of the mechanism are analyzed, showing its ability to achieve large rotations around a continuous rotation axis. Finally, a structure synthesis strategy for variable spherical symmetrical PM is proposed, and several limb types meeting the conditions are obtained.

The design of a parallel manipulator for a given workspace would be greatly facilitated, if the analytic expressions of the hypersurfaces bounding the workspace were available. In translational parallel manipulators (TPMs), the hypersurfaces bounding the workspace are actually threedimensional surfaces, which are the geometric locus of all the positions assumed by an end-effector point when the TPM reaches the workspace borders. These surfaces can be represented in a Cartesian reference system fixed to the frame. This paper studies the workspace of two TPMs, that have the same closure equations and workspace when a few geometric conditions are satisfied. The two TPMs are the translational 3-RUU and the DELTA robot. The kinematic analyses of these two TPMs are different from one another only when velocity and accelerations are considered. The result of this study is that the analytic expression of the surfaces bounding their workspace is a fourth degree polynomial equation, in the coordinates of a plattorm point, which contains all the manipulator geometric parameters. This analytic expression is given in an explicit form. The use of this expression is illustrated through a numerical example.

A novel 3-R(RRR)R+R (R as revolute joint) hybrid antenna mechanism (HAM) is proposed for noncircular polarized antenna. First, its mobility characteristic is analyzed. Besides, its kinematics is deduced, and the velocity and acceleration are obtained. Afterward, its dynamic model is established. The actuation torques of each actuation joint are obtained. Its actuation torques are verified by mathematical model analysis and dynamic simulation. Furthermore, its workspace is also presented. Finally, the motion characteristics experimental results show that the 3-R(RRR)R+R HAM can carry out the azimuth and pitch motion. This research work serves as a fundamental theoretical basis for its further application.

Spray-painting equipments are important for the automatic spraying of long conical objects such as rocket fairing. This paper proposes a spray-painting equipment that consists of a feed worktable, a gantry frame and two serial–parallel mechanisms and investigates the optimal design of PRR–PRR parallel manipulator in serial–parallel mechanisms. Based on the kinematic model of the parallel manipulator, the conditioning performance, workspace and accuracy performance indices are defined. The dynamic model is derived using virtual work principle and dynamic evaluation index is defined. The conditioning performance, workspace, accuracy performance and dynamic performance are involved in multi-objective optimization design to determine the optimal geometrical parameters of the parallel manipulator. Furthermore, the geometrical parameters of the gantry frame are optimized. An example is given to show how to determine these parameters by taking a long object with conical surface as painted object.

Parallel robots are widely used in the fields of manufacturing, medical science, education, scientific research, etc. Many studies have been conducted on the topic already. However, shortcomings still exist, especially in certain situations. To meet the demand of good speed and load performances at the same time, this work presents a novel 2-degree-of-freedom parallel robot. The structural design, static, stiffness, and reachable workspace analysis of the robot are given in the manuscript. Experiment regarding the accuracy and speed performance is conducted, and the results are provided. In the end, potential applications of the proposed robot are suggested.

An approach for calculating the maximum possible absolute values of joint velocities or generalized reactions in a leg of a parallel mechanism has been considered in this paper. The Jacobian analysis and the Screw theory-based methods have been used to acquire the result. These values are calculated for the “worst” directions of the external load or end-effector’s velocity for each leg. The feasibility of using these parameters as the measures of closeness to different types of parallel mechanism singularity is discussed. Further, how this approach is related to the state-of-the-art methods has been illustrated. The key aspect of the discussed approach is that the normalization of vectors or screws is carried out separately for angular and linear components. One possible advantage of such an approach is that it deals only with the kinematic and statics of the mechanism while still providing physically meaningful and practically applicable measures. Case studies of a 3-Degrees Of Freedom translational parallel mechanism and a planar parallel mechanism are presented for illustration and comparison.

Pick-and-place applications need to perform rigid body displacements that combine translations along three independent directions and rotations around one fixed direction (Schoenflies motions). Such displacements constitute a four-dimensional (4-D) subgroup (Schoenflies subgroup) of the 6-D displacement group. The four-degrees of freedom (dof) manipulators whose end effector performs only Schoenflies motions are named Schoenflies-motion generators (SMGs). The most known SMGs are the serial robots named SCARA. In the literature, parallel manipulators (PMs) have also been proposed as SMGs. Here, a novel single-loop SMG of type 2PRPU is studied. Its position analysis, singularity loci and workspace are addressed to provide simple analytic and geometric tools that are useful for the design. The proposed single-loop SMG is not overconstrained, its actuators are on or near the base and its end effector can perform a complete rotation. These features solve the main drawbacks that parallel SMG architectures have in general and make the proposed SMG a valid design alternative.

A three-dimensional (3D) model of a novel 5-DoF type parallel manipulator with a couple-constrained wrench is constructed and its couple-constrained wrench is analyzed. First, the formulas are derived for solving the displacement, velocity, acceleration of the moving platform and moving links, and a workspace is constructed. Second, the formulas are derived for solving the inertial wrenches of the moving links. Third, a dynamics equation is established by considering the inertial wrenches and friction, and the formulas are derived for solving the dynamically active forces and the dynamically couple-constrained wrench. Finally, a numerical example is given to demonstrate the analytic solution of the kinematics and the dynamics, and the analytical solutions are verified by utilizing a simulation mechanism.

This paper examines office design as a spatial context of organizations. Organizations increasingly invest in designing workspaces to support employee creativity, foster company innovation and communicate a positive company image. This paper takes a critical view of this ‘hype’ by describing and analysing images of the headquarters of allegedly ‘creative workspaces’ published on the internet across a broad range of industries and corporations. Our analysis shows how their design follows standardized or stereotypical approaches to nurturing creativity: playfully or artistically designed open spaces, environments reminiscent of home, sports and play, nature, past/future technologies, or culturally aligned symbols. We discern underlying connections between office spaces and creativity, suggesting that creativity flourishes in happy, relaxed and playful communities within close-knit teams. We then identify three contradictions in relation to the existing literature on creativity and workspaces: individually versus collectively produced creativity; professionally designed workspaces versus workspaces created through participation; and planned versus emerging creativity.

In this paper, we study the kinematic effects of number of legs in 6-DOF UPS parallel manipulators. A group of 3-, 4-, and 6-legged mechanisms are evaluated in terms of the kinematic performance indices, workspace, singular configurations, and forward kinematic solutions. Results show that the optimum number of legs varies due to priorities in kinematic measures in different applications. The non-symmetric Wide-Open mechanism enjoys the largest workspace, while the well-known Gough–Stewart (3–3) platform retains the highest dexterity. Especially, the redundantly actuated 4-legged mechanism has several important advantages over its non-redundant counterparts and different architectures of Gough–Stewart platform. It has dramatically less singular configurations, a higher manipulability, and at the same time less sensitivity. It is also shown that the forward kinematic problem has 40, 16, and 1 solution(s), respectively for the 6-, 3-, and the 4-legged mechanisms. Superior capabilities of the 4-legged mechanism make it a perfect candidate to be used in more challenging 6-DOF applications in assembly, manufacturing, biomedical, and space technologies.

This work presents a method based on spherical trigonometry for computing all joint angles of the spherical metamorphic palm. The spherical palm is segmented into spherical triangles which are then solved and combined to fully solve the palm configuration. Further, singularity analysis is investigated with the analysis of each spherical triangle the palm is decomposed. Singularity-avoidance-based design criteria are then presented. Finally, point clouds are generated that represent the joint space of the palm as well as the workspace of the hand with the advantage of an articulated palm is shown.
