The Principle of Competitive Exclusion, first articulated by Gause in 1934, states that two species or populations cannot inhabit the same niche: one will consistently out-compete the other. Of four possible outcomes, the logistic equations that describe such interaction present only one possibility for coexistence, that being when the density-dependent mechanisms of one population become activated before intergroup competition eliminates the other. In applying Gause's Principle as an explanatory model to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, this research explores the present bantustanization of the West Bank as a logical outcome of interspecific competition, but sees the competition coefficients of the equations as the key factors in promoting a stable equilibrium.

We develop a framework for analysing the outcome of resource competition based onbifurcation theory. We elaborate our methodology by readdressing the problem ofcompetition of two species for two resources in a chemostat environment. In the case ofperfect-essential resources it has been extensively discussed using Tilman’srepresentation of resource quarter plane plots. Our mathematically rigorous analysisyields bifurcation diagrams with a striking similarity to Tilman’s method including theinterpretation of the consumption vector and the resource supply vector. However, ourapproach is not restricted to a particular class of models but also works with othertrophic interaction formulations. This is illustrated by the analysis of a modelconsidering interactively-essential or complementary resources instead ofprefect-essential resources. Additionally, our approach can also be used for otherecosystem compositions: multiple resources–multiple species communities with equilibriumor oscillatory dynamics. Hence, it gives not only a new interpretation of Tilman’sgraphical approach, but it constitutes an extension of competition analyses to communitieswith many species as well as non-equilibrium dynamics.

Species commonly exist in sympatry, yet ecological studies are often based on a single species approach while ignoring the impact of sympatric competitors. Over 13 mo we used 24 remote video-camera traps to monitor habitat use of sympatric chimpanzee, gorilla and elephant in four different habitat types in Loango National Park, Gabon. Habitat use by each species was predicted to vary according to seasonal changes in food availability and precipitation. Increased interspecific competition between the three species was expected at times of reduced resource availability, leading to exclusion of the inferior competitor. Supporting the predictions, species abundance per habitat showed seasonal variation: all three species responded positively to increased fruit availability in all habitats, but the response was only significant for gorilla in mature forest and elephant in coastal forest. Responses to rainfall varied, with the chimpanzee responding negatively to rainfall in swamp forest, the gorilla responding positively to rainfall in coastal and secondary forest, and the elephant responding positively to rainfall in mature forest. Elephant presence resulted in competitive exclusion of the apes under certain conditions: the chimpanzee was excluded by the elephant where fruit availability was low, whereas the gorilla was excluded by the elephant in areas of low herb density despite high fruit availability. Our results emphasize the value of applying a multi-species, longer-term approach to studying variation in habitat use among sympatric species and highlight the impact competitors can exert on one another's distribution.

Objective. Ornithonyssus sylviarum (northern fowl mite) and Menacanthus stramineus (chicken body louse) are key poultry pests currently controlled by exclusion or pesticide application. We studied how host beak condition affected their populations over time and how the lice and mites might interact on a host. Methods. Beak-trimmed or beak-intact white leghorn hens were infested initially with either mites or lice and subsequently challenged using the alternate ectoparasite species (reciprocal transfer), while other hens harboured only the initial ectoparasite species. Results. Beak-trimmed hens had far higher ectoparasite numbers relative to beak-intact hens, and the 2 ectoparasites showed evidence of grooming-mediated competitive asymmetry. On beak-trimmed hens, larger numbers of lice quickly nearly completely excluded mites in competition for enemy-free space (lower abdomen), while in the reciprocal transfer mites did not affect louse numbers on beak-trimmed hosts. The 2 ectoparasites co-existed on beak-intact hens, which were better able to defend the lower abdomen habitat by grooming. Conclusion. Lice are somewhat less damaging and much easier to control relative to mites, and might be used to eliminate mites in commercial, beak-trimmed flocks. Beak trimming impairs host grooming and contributes greatly to the high ectoparasite populations seen in commercial flocks. The study adds incentives for poultry breeders to develop more docile hen strains that can be held without beak trimming. This has advantages both to welfare advocates and producers who may no longer need to use insecticides for pest control or be concerned about worker exposure to pesticides.

One component of the high organismal diversity of tropical lowland rain forests is the existence of series of closely related, sympatric species. For example, the six distinct tree species of the monophyletic Polyalthia hypoleuca complex regularly grow sympatrically in various combinations throughout the rain forests of Malesia. Theoretical and empirical evidence has been presented indicating that the members of such series either (1) are well differentiated with respect to at least one major niche component; or (2) may lack differentiated niches. In this study, certain sympatric members of the complex are shown to have clearly diverged in autecological characteristics that affect their distribution including: (1) P. glauca, P. hypoleuca, and P. sumatrana differ in growth characteristics, height at maturity, seedling germination requirements, and are found on soils with differing degrees of hydration; (2) P. discolor grows to a different height and on different substrate types than does P. multinervis; and (3) P. glauca and P. hypoleuca seedlings differ in transpiration characteristics and response to flooding and drought.

A study on the immune and mating interactions between Schistosoma intercalatum and S. mansoni has been carried out. The immunologically mediated interactions and mating patterns observed between the two species demonstrate that S. mansoni is competitively dominant over S. intercalatum. When S. mansoni females are absent, S. mansoni males are more competitive than S. intercalatum males at pairing with S. intercalatum females. The use of a mathematical model shows how the abundance of S. mansoni worms per host could dramatically affect the mating probability of S. intercalatum females with their homologous males. It appears that the competitive exclusion between these two species of schistosomes may probably be an important factor restricting the distribution of S. intercalatum in Africa.

We develop a stage-structured model that describes the dynamics of two competing species each of which have sexual and clonal reproduction. This is typical of many plants including irises. We first analyze the dynamical behavior of a single species model. We show that when the inherent net reproductive number is smaller than one then the population will go to extinction and if it is larger than one then an interior equilibrium exists and it is globally asymptotically stable. Then we analyze the two-species model and establish conditions on the reproduction and survivorship rates that lead to competitive exclusion. We show that the winner species is the one that attains higher density at which its net reproductive number equals unity. Numerical results corroborating the theoretical ones are also presented.

To understand the relationship between the gastrointestinal inhabiting microbial community and broiler health, a literature review is presented. The available information on the development of gut microbial community, the relationship between commensal microflora and digestive function, the role of gut microorganisms on competitive exclusion of chickens against pathogens, and modulation of the gut microbial community by addition of prebiotics to the diet is summarized. Gut dominant microbial communities become more complex as broilers grow older. The establishment of the dominant bacterial community is affected by dietary and host-related factors. Dietary prebiotics can modulate bacterial community shift towards non-harmful bacteria, which is beneficial for the health of broiler chickens. Gut commensal microorganisms play an important role in the prevention of colonization by pathogens in the gastrointestinal tract of chickens, a process known as competitive exclusion. In conclusion, the dilemma caused by the forthcoming ban of antibiotics feed additives and need to maintain the intestinal health of broiler chickens, has produced an enormous interest in finding alternatives. Modulating the intestinal microbial community in a healthy direction, by dietary ingredients such as prebiotics, could be a good solution.

The high cost of rearing pathogen-free poultry, coupled with increases in importation from non-European countries where hygienic measures may be less stringent indicates that biological approaches to control of infection with food-borne pathogens will continue to be important. The major measures are dealt with in this review, together with the positive and negative aspects of each of these approaches. They include antibiotic therapy and prophylaxis, competitive exclusion using intestinal flora preparations, live and killed vaccines and the increasing interest in exploiting natural genetic resistance to infection and disease.

Although thermophilic campylobacters have sometimes caused disease in poultry, both in challenge studies and under field conditions, the organisms are usually carried asymptomatically in the alimentary tract of infected individuals. There is, however, a significant association between campylobacters in poultry and human enteritis. Properties of Campylobacter jejuni that are associated with intestinal colonisation in the bird are discussed. The organism is morphologically and physiologically well adapted to its ecological niche in the mucus-filled crypts of villi, but establishment and maintenance of colonisation involve a complex interaction between bacterium and host that has yet to be fully elucidated. Bacterial factors include the possession of intact, functional flagella and the type of flagellin expressed. Also, colonisation has been shown to depend on the expression of certain stress-response and virulence genes.

Attempts to prevent or reduce campylobacter colonisation by establishing a competitive or antagonistic microflora in chicks have not always been successful, and possible reasons are considered. Some protection was obtained with bacteria such as mucin-utilising coliforms, but the protective potential of these organisms appears to be limited. In other studies, the natural occurrence of colonisation resistance has been demonstrated in broilers and its development followed. Experience suggests that the phenomenon depends on the presence of strictly anaerobic bacteria that have yet to be isolated and identified.

Numerous field studies have attempted to assess competition between ungulates through the analysis of resource overlap. However, interpreting the results of these studies has been problematic because low overlap may be the outcome of historical competition and high overlap will result in competition only when that resource becomes limiting. In New Zealand, increasing densities of introduced Himalayan tahr Hemitragus jemlahicus have competitively excluded introduced Alpine chamois Rupicapra rupicapra, but where densities of tahr have been reduced the two species can coexist. This study evaluated the role of habitat selection in the coexistence of these two recently sympatric ungulates in Carneys Creek, eastern Southern Alps, New Zealand. Seasonal habitat selection was estimated by observing unmarked male tahr, female tahr and chamois monthly for 25 months. The proportional availability of six habitats (grassland, grass bluff, rock bluff, shrubland, scree and snow) was measured from aerial photographs taken in each of the four seasons. Although the null hypothesis that tahr and chamois select habitats similarly was rejected in three of four seasons, there was high overlap in preference for grassland and shrubland, and avoidance of scree and snow. Tahr were more often observed in grass bluff and rock bluff than were chamois. Overlap in habitat selection was greatest during winter when snow dominated the landscape, reducing the availability of vegetated habitats. Using Hurlbert's statistic, the niche breadth of chamois was significantly smaller than that of tahr in all seasons except autumn, in which they were similar. These results, together with anecdotal evidence from Carneys Creek, suggest that chamois increase their habitat specialization in the presence of tahr. Although differences in habitat selection are likely to have contributed to the coexistence of chamois with tahr, even relatively small increases in tahr density in some seasons could be expected to exclude chamois from some habitats in Carneys Creek.
