We use properties of the gamma function to estimate the products $\prod _{k=1}^{n}(4k-3)/4k$ and $\prod _{k=1}^{n}(4k-1)/4k$, motivated by the work of Chen and Qi [‘Completely monotonic function associated with the gamma function and proof of Wallis’ inequality’, Tamkang J. Math.36(4) (2005), 303–307] and Mortici et al. [‘Completely monotonic functions and inequalities associated to some ratio of gamma function’, Appl. Math. Comput.240 (2014), 168–174].

Necessary and sufficient conditions are presented for a function involving the divided difference of the psi function to be completely monotonic and for a function involving the ratio of two gamma functions to be logarithmically completely monotonic. From these, some double inequalities are derived for bounding polygamma functions, divided differences of polygamma functions, and the ratio of two gamma functions.

In the last few years there has been renewed interest in the classical control problem of de Finetti (1957) for the case where the underlying source of randomness is a spectrally negative Lévy process. In particular, a significant step forward was made by Loeffen (2008), who showed that a natural and very general condition on the underlying Lévy process which allows one to proceed with the analysis of the associated Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation is that its Lévy measure is absolutely continuous, having completely monotone density. In this paper we consider de Finetti's control problem, but with the restriction that control strategies are absolutely continuous with respect to the Lebesgue measure. This problem has been considered by Asmussen and Taksar (1997), Jeanblanc-Picqué and Shiryaev (1995), and Boguslavskaya (2006) in the diffusive case, and Gerber and Shiu (2006) for the case of a Cramér-Lundberg process with exponentially distributed jumps. We show the robustness of the condition that the underlying Lévy measure has a completely monotone density and establish an explicit optimal strategy for this case that envelopes the aforementioned existing results. The explicit optimal strategy in question is the so-called refraction strategy.

Some new inequalities for quotients of modified Bessel functions of the first and second kinds are deduced. Moreover, some developments on bounds for modified Bessel functions of the first and second kinds, higher-order monotonicity properties of these functions and applications to a special function that arises in finite elasticity, are summarized. The key tool in our proofs is a frequently used criterion for the monotonicity of the quotient of two Maclaurin series.

A Markov chain X with finite state space {0,…,N} and tridiagonal transition matrix is considered, where transitions from i to i-1 occur with probability (i/N)(1-p(i/N)) and transitions from i to i+1 occur with probability (1-i/N)p(i/N). Here p:[0,1]→[0,1] is a given function. It is shown that if p is continuous with p(x)≤p(1) for all x∈[0,1] then, for each N, a dual process Y to X (with respect to a specific duality function) exists if and only if 1-p is completely monotone with p(0)=0. A probabilistic interpretation of Y in terms of an ancestral process of a mixed multitype Moran model with a random number of types is presented. It is shown that, under weak conditions on p, the process Y, properly time and space scaled, converges to an Ornstein–Uhlenbeck process as N tends to ∞. The asymptotics of the stationary distribution of Y is studied as N tends to ∞. Examples are presented involving selection mechanisms. results.

We consider a modified version of the classical optimal dividends problem of de Finetti in which the objective function is altered by adding in an extra term which takes account of the ruin time of the risk process, the latter being modeled by a spectrally negative Lévy process. We show that, with the exception of a small class, a barrier strategy forms an optimal strategy under the condition that the Lévy measure has a completely monotone density. As a prerequisite for the proof, we show that, under the aforementioned condition on the Lévy measure, the q-scale function of the spectrally negative Lévy process has a derivative which is strictly log-convex.

In this paper we consider a single-server queue with Lévy input and, in particular, its workload process (Qt)t≥0, with a focus on the correlation structure. With the correlation function defined as r(t) := cov(Q0, Qt) / var(Q0) (assuming that the workload process is in stationarity at time 0), we first determine its transform ∫0∞r(t)e-ϑtdt. This expression allows us to prove that r(·) is positive, decreasing, and convex, relying on the machinery of completely monotone functions. We also show that r(·) can be represented as the complementary distribution function of a specific random variable. These results are used to compute the asymptotics of r(t), for large t, for the cases of light-tailed and heavy-tailed Lévy inputs.

In this paper we investigate operators that map one or more probability distributions on the positive real line into another via their Laplace–Stieltjes transforms. Our goal is to make it easier to construct new transforms by manipulating known transforms. We envision the results here assisting modelling in conjunction with numerical transform inversion software. We primarily focus on operators related to infinitely divisible distributions and Lévy processes, drawing upon Feller (1971). We give many concrete examples of infinitely divisible distributions. We consider a cumulant-moment-transfer operator that allows us to relate the cumulants of one distribution to the moments of another. We consider a power-mixture operator corresponding to an independently stopped Lévy process. The special case of exponential power mixtures is a continuous analog of geometric random sums. We introduce a further special case which is remarkably tractable, exponential mixtures of inverse Gaussian distributions (EMIGs). EMIGs arise naturally as approximations for busy periods in queues. We show that the steady-state waiting time in an M/G/1 queue is the difference of two EMIGs when the service-time distribution is an EMIG. We consider several transforms related to first-passage times, e.g. for the M/M/1 queue, reflected Brownian motion and Lévy processes. Some of the associated probability density functions involve Bessel functions and theta functions. We describe properties of the operators, including how they transform moments.

We consider a class of functions on [0,∞), denoted by Ω, having Laplace transforms with only negative zeros and poles. Of special interest is the class Ω+ of probability density functions in Ω. Simple and useful conditions are given for necessity and sufficiency of f ∊ Ω to be in Ω+. The class Ω+ contains many classes of great importance such as mixtures of n independent exponential random variables (CMn), sums of n independent exponential random variables (PF∗n), sums of two independent random variables, one in CMr and the other in PF∗1 (CMPFn with n = r + l) and sums of independent random variables in CMn(SCM). Characterization theorems for these classes are given in terms of zeros and poles of Laplace transforms. The prevalence of these classes in applied probability models of practical importance is demonstrated. In particular, sufficient conditions are given for complete monotonicity and unimodality of modified renewal densities.

A natural model for stochastic flow systems is regulated or reflecting Brownian motion (RBM), which is Brownian motion on the positive real line with constant negative drift and constant diffusion coefficient, modified by an impenetrable reflecting barrier at the origin. As a basis for understanding how stochastic flow systems approach steady state, this paper provides relatively simple descriptions of the moments of RBM as functions of time. In Part I attention is restricted to the case in which RBM starts at the origin; then the moment functions are increasing. After normalization by the steady-state limits, these moment c.d.f.&s (cumulative distribution functions) coincide with gamma mixtures of inverse Gaussian c.d.f.&s. The first moment c.d.f. thus coincides with the first-passage time to the origin starting in steady state with the exponential stationary distribution. From this probabilistic characterization, it follows that the kth-moment c.d.f is the k-fold convolution of the first-moment c.d.f. As a consequence, it is easy to see that the (k + 1)th moment approaches its steady-state limit more slowly than the kth moment. It is also easy to derive the asymptotic behavior as t →∞. The first two moment c.d.f.&s have completely monotone densities, supporting approximation by hyperexponential (H2) c.d.f.&s (mixtures of two exponentials). The H2 approximations provide easily comprehensible descriptions of the first two moment c.d.f.&s suitable for practical purposes. The two exponential components of the H2 approximation yield simple exponential approximations in different regimes. On the other hand, numerical comparisons show that the limit related to the relaxation time does not predict the approach to steady state especially well in regions of primary interest. In Part II (Abate and Whitt (1987a)), moments of RBM with non-zero initial conditions are treated by representing them as the difference of two increasing functions, one of which is the moment function starting at the origin studied here.

It is shown that if a finite-state continuous-time Markov process can be uniformized such that the embedded Markov chain has a TPr (totally positive of order r) transition matrix, then the first-passage time from state 0 to any other state has a PFr (Polya frequency of order r) density. As a consequence, results of Keilson (1971), Esary, Marshall and Proschan (1973), Ghosh and Ebrahimi (1982) and Derman, Ross and Schechner (1983) are strengthened. It is also shown that some cumulative damage shock models, with an underlying compound Poisson process and ‘damages' which are not necessarily non-negative, are associated with wear processes having PFr first-passage times to any threshold. First-passage times with completely monotone densities are also discussed.

In this paper we study some distribution properties of the system failure time in general shock models associated with correlated renewal sequences (Xn, Yn) . Two models, depending on whether the magnitude of the nth shock Xn is correlated to the length Yn of the interval since the last shock, or to the length of the subsequent interval to the next shock, are considered. Sufficient conditions under which the system failure time is completely monotone, new better than used, new better than used in expectation, and harmonic new better than used in expectation are given for these two models.

For a single-server system having several Poisson streams of customers with exponentially distributed service times, busy period densities, waiting time densities, and idle state probabilities are completely monotone. The exponential spectra for such densities are of importance for understanding the transient behavior of such systems. Algorithms are given for the computation of such spectra. Applications to heavy traffic situations and priority systems are also discussed.
