Common teasel is a troublesome invasive weed in North and South America. Additional information on the efficacy of herbicide application and mowing at different growth stages will help in common teasel management. First, an outdoor pot experiment was performed to assess the effects of increasing application rates and combinations of glyphosate and 2,4-D amine when applied at the 4-leaf, rosette, and bolting stages. Second, field experiments were performed to evaluate the impact of time of cutting on invasive common teasel height, head number, and head length. Finally, germinability of seeds collected from naturally growing plants was determined to evaluate the feasibility of mowing invasive common teasel after flowering. Only glyphosate applied at 1.08 kg ae ha−1 at the 4-leaf stage provided adequate control (>90%). Although control was not satisfactory (<90%) when applying glyphosate at 2.16 kg ae ha−1 at the rosette and bolting stages, and 2,4-D at 1.75 kg ai ha−1 at 4-leaf stage, significant injury and biomass decline were observed. Glyphosate and 2,4-D combinations did not improve common teasel control compared with single applications of each. Cutting rosettes strongly reduced inflorescence production (34%–49%) and cutting flowering plants prevented total regrowth. Germination of seeds averaged 14% when harvested 10 d after flowering, and maximum seed germination (>90%) occurred 30 d after flowering. Glyphosate applied alone at the recommended commercial rate early in the growing season, together with cutting at the flowering stage, may be the most beneficial way of controlling invasive common teasel.

Giant reed (Arundo donax L.) has recently shown great potential as a feedstock for the bioenergy industry. However, before A. donax can be grown commercially, due to its invasive nature, management strategies must be developed to reduce the risk of unintended spread. This research was conducted in northeastern Oregon (USA) during two growing seasons. Nine control strategies were evaluated in a field that previously had A. donax as a crop. The control strategies included mechanical practices (stem cutting and rhizome digging), physical practices (covering with an opaque tarp), chemical practices (glyphosate applications at different rates and timings), and a combination of these practices. Spring samplings of A. donax regrowth in the season following treatments indicated that stem cutting in the spring without follow-up control practices provided no control. Covering plants with a tarp after cutting them (either with or without a glyphosate treatment after cutting) resulted in 96% control. Application of glyphosate alone also resulted in excellent control, although timing of application was an important factor for maximizing efficacy. The best results were found when the maximum dose (10.2 L ai ha−1) was split among two or three applications (>99% of control) compared with the maximum dose applied once (75% to 94%). Control was lower (73% to 89%) for two of the strategies that included mechanical practices, stem cutting + glyphosate and rhizome digging, in comparison to other strategies involving tarps and/or glyphosate applications (88% to 100%). Results indicated that it is very difficult to eradicate volunteer A. donax in 1 yr, but very good control can be achieved with several of the strategies tested.

Most farmers now rely on herbicides and, to a lesser extent, cultivation to control weeds in Glycine max in the Midwest. However, the general public is concerned that widely used herbicides will contaminate surface and groundwater. Alternative ways to control weeds in field crops are needed to reduce or prevent herbicide contamination of surface and groundwater. A new between-row-mowing weed management system that consists of band-applied herbicides over crop rows + two or more between-row mowings was tested in G. max over 6 yr in Missouri. Mowing weeds close to the soil surface two or more times between crop rows killed or suppressed annual grass and broadleaf weeds, chiefly Setaria faberi, Ambrosia artemisiifolia, and Amaranthus spp., if properly timed. Shading by crop canopy closure contributed to weed suppression in this weed management system. G. max yield also could not be distinguished from weed-free check plots and was greater than the weedy check plots. Herbicide use was reduced 50% by banding because only 50% of the field area was sprayed. The between-row-mowing weed management system may have use in environmentally sensitive areas to help reduce soil erosion or water contamination by herbicides.

White sweetclover is invading the Alaska glacial river floodplains and roadsides adjacent to natural areas, and control methods are needed. Chlorsulfuron, 2,4-DB, clopyralid, triclopyr, and 2,4-D controlled white sweetclover seedlings below recommended rates in the greenhouse. Biomass of established plants in the field was reduced by chlorsulfuron at recommended (17.6 g ai/ha), 1/2, and 1/4 rates and was reduced by triclopyr and 2,4-D at recommended rates (1,260 and 1,600 g ai/ha). Herbicides were more effective at reducing white sweetclover viable seed production in 2007 than in 2006. Only chlorsulfuron at 17.6 g ai/ha (recommended rate) eliminated seed production in both years. Flaming killed first-year plants, but some second-year plants resprouted and produced viable seed. Cutting at the 2.5 or 10 cm height did not control first-year plants because of regrowth, and second-year plant density and seed production was reduced by cutting at 2.5 cm but not by cutting at 10 cm.

In previous research, use of PRE soil residual herbicides was reduced 50% in no-till corn and soybean by banding herbicides over crop rows followed by mowing weeds growing between rows two times. The research goals were (1) to determine whether such between-row mowing systems adequately controlled weeds and prevented grain yield loss in other competitive field crops, such as no-till grain sorghum, and (2) to compare broadcast herbicide treatments with between-row mowing systems. PRE atrazine plus dimethenamid at relative rates of 0.75× and 1× (where 1× = 1.7 plus 1.3 kg ai/ha, respectively) were band-applied over rows shortly after planting followed by two between-row mowings close to the soil surface. In 2 of 3 yr in Missouri, this system controlled giant foxtail and common waterhemp as well as broadcast herbicides in no-till sorghum. In 2 of 3 yr, between-row mowing systems also prevented yield loss in no-till sorghum as well as both broadcast herbicides at the same rates and the weed-free check.

In previous research, summer annual weeds were successfully controlled in no-till corn with between-row mowing systems that consisted of soil-residual preemergence herbicides banded over corn rows followed by mowing weeds close to the soil surface one or two times later during the growing season. The objective of this research was to determine whether between-row mowing systems could successfully control both winter annual and summer annual weeds as well as broadcast herbicides perform in no-till corn. In two of three years in Missouri, between-row mowing systems controlled and reduced both winter annual and summer annual weed cover and prevented weeds from reducing corn yields. Corn yields for the following no-till weed management systems equaled the weed-free check: winter annual weed control with between-row mowing plus preplant, banded, postemergence-applied glyphosate at 1.1 kg ae/ha and later summer annual weed control with postplant, banded, preemergence-applied atrazine plus S-metolachlor at 2.2 plus 1.8 kg ai/ha followed by between-row mowing. Winter annual weeds growing between rows were controlled with one mowing, and later summer annual weeds were controlled with either one late or “middle” mowing or two mowings (i.e., early and late). Total herbicide use was reduced 50% (i.e., 25 and 25%, respectively) in no-till corn. Commercially acceptable corn stands were needed for between-row mowing systems to adequately control weeds. In one of three years when corn stands were half of those of the other two years, broadcast herbicides performed better than between-row mowing systems in no-till corn.

Research was conducted to determine the minimum number of between-row mowings necessary to control annual weeds, chiefly giant foxtail and common waterhemp, without corn yield loss. Over 2 yr in Missouri, the between-row mowing systems that were evaluated consisted of a 38-cm band of PRE atrazine plus metolachlor at 2.2 plus 2.2 kg ai/ha applied over corn grown in 76-cm rows shortly after planting followed by one, two, or three between-row mowings close to the soil surface. Based on rated total weed control, between-row total weed cover, and corn yield, the weed-free check was statistically indistinguishable from a treatment in which banded PRE herbicide was followed by only one between-row mowing, late, when weeds were relatively large. When mowed once at 52 to 64 days after planting (DAP), giant foxtail and common waterhemp were greater than 85 cm tall. The yield was not increased by mowing earlier or more than once.

Research to understand and manage ecosystems to supply services has recently spurred a functional view of their biodiversity. In particular, approaches based on functional traits rather than species diversity are increasingly used to reflect interactions between organisms and their environment. These approaches bring a functional perspective to the study of community structure responses to disturbances and resources, and of their effects on ecosystem functioning and services. From an academic perspective, we propose a conceptual framework based on species functional traits to better infer how grassland management practices (fertilization, defoliation regime) along with abiotic factors influence plant, animal and microbial community composition and a range of services in grassland ecosystems. The core of the framework relies on combinations of plant functional traits and associated microbial features that specifically respond to environmental and management factors and influence ecosystem services. To overcome stakeholders’ difficulty in applying the concept of functional traits, we propose an operational approach implying the mapping of plant communities distributed into five plant functional types (PFTs). The approach was used for fields in grassland-based livestock farms from two French grassland networks. We evaluated its ability to predict a range of services including forage provision and non-market services according to environmental and management drivers. PFT-based plant community composition predicted forage services reasonably well but responded weakly to environmental gradients. To cope with the observed limitations of current predictive approaches, we suggest including soil microbial functional types and adaptive management rather than using a prescriptive scheme.

De tels changements sont importants pour l'étude du comportement des pièces au cours du temps. Il est alors nécessaire de quantifier les contraintes résiduelles, les composantes de texture et de déterminer la microstructure induite par l'usinage pour comprendre et prédire le comportement des surfaces considérées. Dans cette étude, le matériau cuivre pur a été choisi et considéré comme un "système modèle". En tournage, l'influence du rayon de bec, de la vitesse de coupe et de la présence de lubrifiant sur le champ de contraintes et la texture a été quantifiée à l'aide de techniques DRX. Les modifications micro-structurales ont été évaluées à l'aide de la microscopie électronique à balayage. Enfin, le comportement électrochimique de la surface a été étudié en utilisant la technique de la micro-cellule électrochimique.

L'utilisation du perçage laser s'avère une alternative incontournable lorsque le diamètre de perçage est aux environs de 10 à 50 $\mu $m, domaine où les moyens conventionnels deviennent difficiles à mettre en œuvre et coûteux. De plus il se présente comme une technique de choix pour un certain nombre de matériaux : les composites, les mous et les ultradurs, qui ne sont pas travaillés facilement au niveau microscopique avec les outils de coupe mécaniques. Nous avons apporté la preuve que des conditions d'expérience bien choisies sont capables de produire des micro-trous avec des rapports de forme records (jusqu'à 600) dans des polymères purs comme les PET, PI, PC, PS, PMMA, PEEK,... Par exemple des trous de diamètre typiquement dans les 30 $\mu $m peuvent être aussi longs que 18 mm, profondeur à laquelle la vitesse tombe presque à zéro, et le profil devient stationnaire. D'autres matériaux (métaux, céramiques), qui peuvent être de la même façon micropercés par laser, n'offrent pas les mêmes rapports de forme aussi élevés. Les mécanismes du processus de perçage ont été étudiés en détail et un modèle analytique original a été construit récemment. Les divers résultats expérimentaux, obtenus avec le laser KrF, sont revus en insistant sur les paramètres conduisant à la formation de "bons" trous avec les rapports de forme élevés. Pour les applications il est aussi important de noter que de tels rapports de forme élevés sont obtenus avec la configuration ordinaire du laser KrF ayant une divergence de 3 mrad en standard. Cependant, comme le modèle le montre, il y a encore de l'espace pour une amélioration du rapport de forme en utilisant un faisceau avec une divergence plus faible (la limite théorique est 0,2 mrad). De nouveaux travaux de recherche se poursuivent actuellement.

En este período, frente a tasas de crecimiento nulas en la zona control, se obtienen valores alrededor de 1.3 %.día−1 en las cosechadas, mientras que entre marzo y julio oscilan alrededor de 0.9 %.día.−1.

La producción es 1.4 veces mayor en las áreas cosechadas (valores alrededor de 1 100 g.m−2.año−1), mientras que las tasas de renovación son 2.5 veces mayores en ellas (6.8 año−1).
