Soybean has undergone the greatest expansion of any global crop, fuelled by the emergence of herbicide-resistant crops. In Uruguay, soybean croplands have increased from virtually zero to more than 1 million ha in 20 years. Uruguay is also implementing its system of protected areas. Here, we assess the presence of pesticides within a Ramsar site and protected area, in a basin dominated by croplands. We consider pesticides as surrogates of the subtle impacts of agribusiness on conservation initiatives and other productions. Pesticides were found in soils, fishes and beehives, both within and around the protected area. Endosulfan was found in all matrices analysed (23 of 80 samples), while glyphosate (0–2.31 mg/kg) and aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA; 0–0.61 mg/kg) were found in all soil classes. The study also allowed for a retrospective evaluation of a recent policy banning endosulfan in Uruguay, suggesting that while the protected area has not been immune to the impacts of agribusiness on human health or biodiversity, limiting the use of pesticides reduces or avoids some of them. This has implications for the design of multifunctional landscapes and for the debate on land sharing versus land sparing.

Pesticides are chemicals used to kill pests and other “rival” organisms which may cause damage to crops in agriculture. In some instances the vast usage of pesticides may create negative effects on the environment and its units like living and non-living organisms. Green criminology counts such harmful activities upon the environment as crimes or harms though such activities can be legal or illegal in nature. The case of the endosulfan disaster that occurred in Kasargod, Kerala can be accounted to environmental harms which detrimentally affected the environment and its units, especially humans. The pesticide endosulfan was sprayed aerially for around 25 years in cashew plantations situated in Kasargod and caused severe diseases and extensive malformations among people living in the region. In this paper the endosulfan disaster of Kasargod is approached through the green criminological perspective of environmental harms.

Coapplication of herbicides and insecticides affords growers an opportunity to control multiple pests with one application given that efficacy is not compromised. Trifloxysulfuron was applied at 5.3 g ai/ha both alone and in combination with the insecticides acephate (370 g ai/ha), oxamyl (370 g ai/ha), lambda-cyhalothrin (34 g ai/ha), acetamiprid (45 g ai/ha), thiamethoxam (45 g ai/ha), endosulfan (379 g ai/ha), indoxacarb (123 g ai/ha), emamectin benzoate (11 g ai/ha), methoxyfenozide (67 g ai/ha), spinosad (75 g ai/ha), and pyridalyl (112 g ai/ha) to determine the effects of coapplication on control of some of the more common and/or troublesome broadleaf weeds infesting cotton. In addition, the insecticides acephate, oxamyl, lambda-cyhalothrin, thiamethoxam, and endosulfan, at the rates listed above, were applied either alone or in combination with trifloxysulfuron at 7.9 g/ha to assess the effects of coapplication on thrips control. Control of hemp sesbania (insecticides oxamyl and lambda-cyhalothrin), sicklepod (insecticides methoxyfenozide and pyridalyl), redroot pigweed (insecticides thiamethoxam, methoxyfenozide, spinosad, and pyridalyl), and smooth pigweed, Palmer amaranth, and common lambsquarters (all insecticides) with trifloxysulfuron may be reduced when coapplied with the indicated insecticides for each species. Control of pitted, tall, ivyleaf, and entireleaf morningglory with trifloxysulfuron was not affected by the insecticides evaluated. Coapplication of trifloxysulfuron with the insecticides evaluated also resulted in no negative effects on thrips control.

Neem products are often perceived as harmless to natural enemies, pollinators and other non-target organisms. For this reason, several integrated pest management (IPM) programmes have adopted neem as one of the prime components. This study revealed toxic effects of neem on soil-inhabiting and aerial natural enemies in chickpea to an extent of 41 and 29% population reduction, respectively, compared with 63 and 51% when using a conventional insecticide (endosulfan). Neem also affected the parasitization of Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) larvae by Campoletis chlorideae Uchida up to 20%. The natural enemy population started building up from the vegetative phase and reached their peak during the reproductive phase, and there was a gradual decline from pod formation to pre-harvest phases of the crop. Adapting the currently used IPM system in chickpea using neem during the vegetative phase, followed by an application of Helicoverpa nuclear polyhedrosis virus (HNPV) at flowering and need-based application(s) of chitin inhibitors like novaluron or flufenoxuron instead of endosulfan during pod formation would strongly augment natural enemy populations. This paper discusses the relative toxicity of neem and other IPM components on soil-inhabiting and aerial natural enemies in the chickpea ecosystem.

Laboratory bioassay tests showed that Bacillus thuringiensis (B.t.) (Bactospeine) treatment of second instar larvae of Heliothis armigera (Hbn.) and Spodoptera litura F. increased their susceptibility to endosulfan, monocrotophos, fenvalerate and cypermethrin. The LC50 of these insecticides to both the species of larvae were lowered when treated with B.t. Comparison of susceptibility ratios showed that the increased susceptibility to insecticides was more in H. armigera than in S. litura larvae.

Between 1979 and 1982, H. hampei spread itself from a small area in the lowlands of central Jamaica, to the entire coffee growing region (alt. 15–1603 m) of the island. The levels of infestations in the 390 farms surveyed ranged from less than 5–100%; in plains it was about 45% but only about 3.4% at altitudes of over 1000 m. On a parish basis the infestation ranged from 2.8 to 19.17% (mean 9.45%) in June 1982, before the spraying with thiodan EC35 began.

In November 1982, 8 weeks after the last spray of the three-spray cycle, the infestation levels ranged between 1 and 20.21% (mean 9.56%). In fact, it had increased from about 6.7% in 1979 to 9.56% in 1982, despite the multi-million dollar spraying programme over 4 years. The shortcomings of the chemical control strategy are discussed and an integrated approach involving chemical and cultural practices is advocated.

No insect parasite or predator of H. hampei were found in Jamaica; the fungus Beauvaria bassiana was however, found to have inflicted 6–40% mortality in the adult borer.

In 1981 an attempt was made to eradicate a 300 km2 fly-belt of Glossina pallidipes (Austen) in the Lambwe Valley of western Kenya by means, principally, of sequential aerial application of endosulfan aerosol spray. The progress of spraying operations was monitored entomologically by surveying for fly with biconical traps sited in main habitats of thicket, Acacia woodland and coniferous plantation, and by age-grading females caught between spray cycles.

Although nine spray applications of relatively heavy dosages of insecticide were carried out, the campaign ultimately failed to accomplish its objective. Females which had clearly survived and bred in the intervals between spray cycles were found throughout the area. By the end of operations, the tsetse population appeared to have been reduced by 99.9% in thicket and woodland, and by 99% in coniferous plantation. Nevertheless, on the basis of a crude estimate of total fly numbers in the Lambwe Valley, several thousand flies possibly remained after spraying.

Monthly post-spray monitoring showed that the population in thicket fully recovered in about 12 months, but to only 20–30% of its original level in woodland and plantation two years after spraying. The population in thicket maintained an approximate equilibrium density after recovery, indicating that density-dependent processes had re-established a regulatory effect. There was some evidence that this was brought about in part by fly movement. Calculations of the population growth rate gave a value for r, the instantaneous rate of increase, of 0.015 per day; equivalent to a finite rate of increase of 1.610 per month, and a population doubling time of 45 days. Some possible ecological reasons for failure to achieve eradication are discussed.
