In this chapter, we develop spectral techniques. We highlight some applications to Markov chain mixing and network analysis. The main tools are the spectral theorem and the variational characterization of eigenvalues, which we review together with some related results. We also give a brief introduction to spectral graph theory and detail an application to community recovery. Then we apply the spectral theorem to reversible Markov chains. In particular we define the spectral gap and establish its close relationship to the mixing time. We also show in that the spectral gap can be bounded using certain isoperimetric properties of the underlying network. We prove Cheeger’s inequality, which quantifies this relationship, and introduce expander graphs, an important family of graphs with good “expansion.” Applications to mixing times are also discussed. One specific technique is the “canonical paths method,” which bounds the spectral graph by formalizing a notion of congestion in the network.

Ramanujan graphs have fascinating properties and history. In this paper we explore a parallel notion of Ramanujan digraphs, collecting relevant results from old and recent papers, and proving some new ones. Almost-normal Ramanujan digraphs are shown to be of special interest, as they are extreme in the sense of an Alon-Boppana theorem, and they have remarkable combinatorial features, such as small diameter, Chernoff bound for sampling, optimal covering time and sharp cutoff. Other topics explored are the connection to Cayley graphs and digraphs, the spectral radius of universal covers, Alon's conjecture for random digraphs, and explicit constructions of almost-normal Ramanujan digraphs.

This set of notes is an introductory survey on box spaces and their connections with Riemannian and spectral geometry. After defining box spaces of finitely generated residually finite groups $G$, we give a brief introduction to coarse geometry, then the link between box spaces and expanders, and the dictionary between coarse geometric properties of box spaces and analytic properties of $G$. When $G$ is the fundamental group of a closed Riemannian manifold $M$, there are deep connections between the geometry of a box space of $G$ and the geometry of the associated tower of Riemannian covers of $M$.
