This article considers the individual equilibrium behavior and socially optimal strategy in a fluid queue with two types of parallel customers and incomplete fault. Assume that the working state and the incomplete fault state appear alternately in the buffer. Different from the linear revenue and expenditure structure, an exponential utility function can be constructed to obtain the equilibrium balking thresholds in the fully observable case. Besides, the steady-state probability distribution and the corresponding expected social benefit are derived based on the renewal process and the standard theory of linear ordinary differential equations. Furthermore, a reasonable entrance fee strategy is discussed under the condition that the fluid accepts the globally optimal strategies. Finally, the effects of the diverse system parameters on the entrance fee and the expected social benefit are explicitly illustrated by numerical comparisons.

In this paper, we analyze a two-queue random time-limited Markov-modulated polling model. In the first part of the paper, we investigate the fluid version: fluid arrives at the two queues as two independent flows with deterministic rate. There is a single server that serves both queues at constant speeds. The server spends an exponentially distributed amount of time in each queue. After the completion of such a visit time to one queue, the server instantly switches to the other queue, i.e., there is no switch-over time.

For this model, we first derive the Laplace–Stieltjes transform (LST) of the stationary marginal fluid content/workload at each queue. Subsequently, we derive a functional equation for the LST of the two-dimensional workload distribution that leads to a Riemann–Hilbert boundary value problem (BVP). After taking a heavy-traffic limit, and restricting ourselves to the symmetric case, the BVP simplifies and can be solved explicitly.

In the second part of the paper, allowing for more general (Lévy) input processes and server switching policies, we investigate the transient process limit of the joint workload in heavy traffic. Again solving a BVP, we determine the stationary distribution of the limiting process. We show that, in the symmetric case, this distribution coincides with our earlier solution of the BVP, implying that in this case the two limits (stationarity and heavy traffic) commute.

Cloud storage faces many problems in the storage process which badly affect the system's efficiency. One of the most problems is insufficient buffer space in cloud storage. This means that the packets of data wait to have storage service which may lead to weakness in performance evaluation of the system. The storage process is considered a stochastic process in which we can determine the probability distribution of the buffer occupancy and the buffer content and predict the performance behavior of the system at any time. This paper modulates a cloud storage facility as a fluid queue controlled by Markovian queue. This queue has infinite buffer capacity which determined by the M/M/1/N queue with constant arrival and service rates. We obtain the analytical solution of the distribution of the buffer occupancy. Moreover, several performance measures and numerical results are given which illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed model.

We consider a polling system with two queues, exhaustive service, no switchover times, and exponential service times with rate µ in each queue. The waiting cost depends on the position of the queue relative to the server: it costs a customer c per time unit to wait in the busy queue (where the server is) and d per time unit in the idle queue (where there is no server). Customers arrive according to a Poisson process with rate λ. We study the control problem of how arrivals should be routed to the two queues in order to minimize the expected waiting costs and characterize individually and socially optimal routeing policies under three scenarios of available information at decision epochs: no, partial, and complete information. In the complete information case, we develop a new iterative algorithm to determine individually optimal policies (which are symmetric Nash equilibria), and show that such policies can be described by a switching curve. We use Markov decision processes to compute the socially optimal policies. We observe numerically that the socially optimal policy is well approximated by a linear switching curve. We prove that the control policy described by this linear switching curve is indeed optimal for the fluid version of the two-queue polling system.

We study congestion periods in a finite fluid buffer when the net input rate depends upon a recurrent Markov process; congestion occurs when the buffer content is equal to the buffer capacity. Similarly to O'Reilly and Palmowski (2013), we consider the duration of congestion periods as well as the associated volume of lost information. While these quantities are characterized by their Laplace transforms in that paper, we presently derive their distributions in a typical stationary busy period of the buffer. Our goal is to compute the exact expression of the loss probability in the system, which is usually approximated by the probability that the occupancy of the infinite buffer is greater than the buffer capacity under consideration. Moreover, by using general results of the theory of Markovian arrival processes, we show that the duration of congestion and the volume of lost information have phase-type distributions.

A semi-numerical method is derived to compute the Laplace transform of the equilibrium busy period probability density function in a fluid queue with constant output rate when the buffer is nonempty. The input process is controlled by a continuous-time semi-Markov chain (CTSMC) with n states such that in each state the input rate is constant. The holding time in states with net positive output rate - so-called emptying states - is assumed to be an exponentially distributed random variable, whereas in states with net positive input rate - so-called filling states - it may have an arbitrary probability distribution. The result is demonstrated by applying it to various systems, including fluid queues with two on-off input sources. The latter exercise in part shows consistency with prior results but also solves the problem in the case where there are two emptying states. Numerical results are presented for selected examples which expose discontinuities in the busy period distribution when the number of emptying states changes, e.g. as a result of increasing the fluid arrival rate in one or more states of the controlling CTSMC.

We show that, contrary to common wisdom, the cumulative input process in a fluid queue with cluster Poisson arrivals can converge, in the slow growth regime, to a fractional Brownian motion, and not to a Lévy stable motion. This emphasizes the lack of robustness of Lévy stable motions as ‘birds-eye’ descriptions of the traffic in communication networks.

In this paper we consider an extension of the Sparre Andersen insurance risk model by relaxing one of its independence assumptions. The newly proposed dependence structure is introduced through the premise that the joint distribution of the interclaim time and the subsequent claim size is bivariate phase-type (see, e.g. Assaf et al. (1984) and Kulkarni (1989)). Relying on the existing connection between risk processes and fluid flows (see, e.g. Badescu et al. (2005), Badescu, Drekic and Landriault (2007), Ramaswami (2006), and Ahn, Badescu and Ramaswami (2007)), we construct an analytically tractable fluid flow that leads to the analysis of various ruin-related quantities in the aforementioned risk model. Using matrix-analytic methods, we obtain an explicit expression for the Gerber–Shiu discounted penalty function (see Gerber and Shiu (1998)) when the penalty function depends on the deficit at ruin only. Finally, we investigate how some ruin-related quantities involving the surplus immediately prior to ruin can also be analyzed via our fluid flow methodology.

We consider a stochastic fluid queue served by a constant rate server and driven by a process which is the local time of a reflected Lévy process. Such a stochastic system can be used as a model in a priority service system, especially when the time scales involved are fast. The input (local time) in our model is typically (but not necessarily) singular with respect to the Lebesgue measure, a situation which, in view of the nonsmooth or bursty nature of several types of Internet traffic, is nowadays quite realistic. We first discuss how to rigorously construct the (necessarily) unique stationary version of the system under some natural stability conditions. We then consider the distribution of performance steady-state characteristics, namely, the buffer content, the idle period, and the busy period. These derivations are much based on the fact that the inverse of the local time of a Markov process is a Lévy process (a subordinator), hence making the theory of Lévy processes applicable. Another important ingredient in our approach is the use of Palm calculus for stationary random point processes and measures.

We analyze asymptotically a differential-difference equation that arises in a Markov-modulated fluid model. We use singular perturbation methods to analyze the problem with appropriate scalings of the two state variables. In particular, the ray method and asymptotic matching are used.

We show in this paper that if a stationary traffic source is regulated by a leaky bucket with leak rate ρ and bucket size σ, then the amount of information generated in successive time intervals is dominated, in the increasing convex ordering sense, by that of a Poisson arrival process with rate ρ/σ, with each arrival bringing an amount of information equal to σ. By exploiting this property, we then show that the mean value in the stationary regime of the content of a buffer drained at constant rate and fed with the superposition of regulated flows is less than the mean value of the same buffer fed with an adequate Poisson process, whose characteristics depend upon the regulated input flows.

We consider an infinite-capacity second-order fluid queue governed by a continuous-time Markov chain and with linear service rate. The variability of the traffic is modeled by a Brownian motion and a local variance function modulated by the Markov chain and proportional to the fluid level in the queue. The behavior of this second-order fluid-flow model is described by a linear stochastic differential equation, satisfied by the transient queue level. We study the transient level's convergence in distribution under weak assumptions and we obtain an expression for the stationary queue level. For the first-order case, we give a simple expression of all its moments as well as of its Laplace transform. For the second-order model we compute its first two moments.

We consider a fluid queue controlled by a semi-Markov process and we apply the Markov-renewal approach developed earlier in the context of quasi-birth-and-death processes and of Markovian fluid queues. We analyze two subfamilies of semi-Markov processes. In the first family, we assume that the intervals during which the input rate is negative have an exponential distribution. In the second family, we take the complementary case and assume that the intervals during which the input rate is positive have an exponential distribution. We thoroughly characterize the structure of the stationary distribution in both cases.

The leaky bucket is a flow control mechanism that is designed to reduce the effect of the inevitable variability in the input stream into a node of a communication network. In this paper we study what happens when an input stream with heavy-tailed work sessions arrives to a server protected by such a leaky bucket. Heavy-tailed sessions produce long-range dependence in the input stream. Previous studies of single server fluid queues without flow control suggested that such long-range dependence can have a dramatic effect on the system performance. By concentrating on the expected time till overflow of a large finite buffer we show that leaky-bucket flow control does make the system overflow less often, but long-range dependence still makes its presence felt.

In this paper we consider a queue fed by a large number of independent continuous-time Gaussian processes with stationary increments. After scaling the buffer exceedance threshold and the (constant) service capacity by the number of sources, we present asymptotically exact results for the probability that the buffer threshold is exceeded. We consider both the stationary overflow probability and the (transient) probability of overflow at a finite time horizon. We give detailed results for the practically important cases in which the inputs are fractional Brownian motion processes or integrated Gaussian processes.

We consider a queue fed by a mixture of light-tailed and heavy-tailed traffic. The two traffic flows are served in accordance with the generalized processor sharing (GPS) discipline. GPS-based scheduling algorithms, such as weighted fair queueing (WFQ), have emerged as an important mechanism for achieving service differentiation in integrated networks. We derive the asymptotic workload behaviour of the light-tailed traffic flow under the assumption that its GPS weight is larger than its traffic intensity. The GPS mechanism ensures that the workload is bounded above by that in an isolated system with the light-tailed flow served in isolation at a constant rate equal to its GPS weight. We show that the workload distribution is, in fact, asymptotically equivalent to that in the isolated system, multiplied by a certain prefactor, which accounts for the interaction with the heavy-tailed flow. Specifically, the prefactor represents the probability that the heavy-tailed flow is backlogged long enough for the light-tailed flow to reach overflow. The results provide crucial qualitative insight in the typical overflow scenario.

We consider a fluid queue with downward jumps, where the fluid flow rate and the downward jumps are controlled by a background Markov chain with a finite state space. We show that the stationary distribution of a buffer content has a matrix exponential form, and identify the exponent matrix. We derive these results using time-reversed arguments and the background state distribution at the hitting time concerning the corresponding fluid flow with upward jumps. This distribution was recently studied for a fluid queue with upward jumps under a stability condition. We give an alternative proof for this result using the rate conservation law. This proof not only simplifies the proof, but also explains an underlying Markov structure and enables us to study more complex cases such that the fluid flow has jumps subject to a nondecreasing Lévy process, a Brownian component, and countably many background states.

We consider an infinite capacity buffer where the incoming fluid traffic belongs to K different types modulated by K independent Markovian on-off processes. The kth input process is described by three parameters: (λk, μk, rk), where 1/λk is the mean off time, 1/μk is the mean on time, and rk is the constant peak rate during the on time. The buffer empties the fluid at rate c according to a first come first served (FCFS) discipline. The output process of type k fluid is neither Markovian, nor on-off. We approximate it by an on-off process by defining the process to be off if no fluid of type k is leaving the buffer, and on otherwise. We compute the mean on time τkon and mean off time τkoff. We approximate the peak output rate by a constant rko so as to conserve the fluid. We approximate the output process by the three parameters (λko, μko, rko), where λko = 1/τkoff, and μko = 1/τkon. In this paper we derive methods of computing τkon, τkoff and rko for k = 1, 2,…, K. They are based on the results for the computation of expected reward in a fluid queueing system during a first passage time. We illustrate the methodology by a numerical example. In the last section we conduct a similar output analysis for a standard M/G/1 queue with K types of customers arriving according to independent Poisson processes and requiring independent generally distributed service times, and following a FCFS service discipline. For this case we are able to get analytical results.

We consider an infinite-capacity buffer receiving fluid at a rate depending on the state of an M/M/1 queue. We obtain a new analytic expression for the joint stationary distribution of the buffer level and the state of the M/M/1 queue. This expression is obtained by the use of generating functions which are explicitly inverted. The case of a finite capacity fluid queue is also considered.

We consider a fluid queue fed by a superposition of a finite number of On/Off sources, the distribution of the On period being subexponential for some of them and exponential for the others. We provide general lower and upper bounds for the tail of the stationary buffer content distribution in terms of the so-called minimal subsets of sources. We then show that this tail decays at exponential or subexponential speed according as a certain parameter is smaller or larger than the ouput rate. If we replace the subexponential tails by regularly varying tails, the upper bound and the lower bound are sharp in that they differ only by a multiplicative factor.
