During homing contests, racing pigeons (Columba livia) are transported to their release site under crowded conditions. Behaviour and thermogenesis under these conditions were studied in two experiments. In the first experiment, temperature (26 °C or 36 °C) and water availability (access or deprived) had no significant effect on either behaviour or heat production of old male pigeons. However, the frequency of threatening behaviour and the proportion of activity-related heat production in total heat production increased during the 23-hour experimental period, whereas no decrease in aggressive behaviour was found. In the second experiment the effect of testing age (young or old) and sex (male or female) were considered in relation to behaviour and thermogenesis. Young pigeons were more immobile than old pigeons, but heat production was lower in old pigeons. Male groups had a higher activity-related heat production and had more head injuries resulting from pecking than females. Again, no decrease in aggressive behaviour or changes in behaviour patterns over time were found. Body-weight at the start of the experiment was predictive of subsequent behaviour in the crate. A higher body-weight was related to more threatening behaviour, less displacement and less head injuries. The consistent level of aggressive behaviour over time, causing predictable head injuries, indicates that a ‘ceiling effect’ in adaptation is reached under crowded transport conditions. To improve pigeon welfare, serious considerations must be given to transporting racing pigeons under less crowded conditions.

The medial part of the nucleus of Edinger–Westphal (EWM) in birds mediates light-regulated adaptive increases in choroidal blood flow (ChBF). We sought to characterize the effect of loss of EWM-mediated ChBF regulation on photoreceptor health in pigeons housed in either moderate intensity diurnal or constant light (CL). Photoreceptor abundance following complete EWM destruction was compared to that following a lesion in the pupil control circuit (as a control for spread of EWM lesions to the nearby pupil-controlling lateral EW) or following no EW damage. Birds were housed post-lesion in a 12 h 400 lux light/12 h dark light cycle for up to 16.5 months, or in constant 400 lux light for up to 3 weeks. Paraformaldehyde–glutaraldehyde fixed eyes were embedded in plastic, sectioned, slide-mounted, and stained with toluidine blue/azure II. Blinded analysis of photoreceptor outer segment abundance was performed, with outer segment types distinguished by oil droplet tint and laminar position. Brains were examined histologically to assess lesion accuracy. Disruption of pupil control had no adverse effect on photoreceptor outer segment abundance in either diurnal light or CL, but EWM destruction led to 50–60% loss of blue/violet cone outer segments in both light conditions, and a 42% loss of principal cone outer segments in CL. The findings indicate that adaptive regulation of ChBF by the EWM circuit plays a role in maintaining photoreceptor health and mitigates the harmful effect of light on photoreceptors, especially short wavelength-sensitive cone photoreceptors.

Finch trichomonosis, caused by Trichomonas gallinae, emerged in the Canadian Maritime provinces in 2007 and has since caused ongoing mortality in regional purple finch (Carpodacus purpureus) and American goldfinch (Carduelis tristis) populations. Trichomonas gallinae was isolated from (1) finches and rock pigeons (Columbia livia) submitted for post-mortem or live-captured at bird feeding sites experiencing trichomonosis mortality; (2) bird seed at these same sites; and (3) rock pigeons live-captured at known roosts or humanely killed. Isolates were characterized using internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region and iron hydrogenase (Fe-hyd) gene sequences. Two distinct ITS types were found. Type A was identical to the UK finch epidemic strain and was isolated from finches and a rock pigeon with trichomonosis; apparently healthy rock pigeons and finches; and bird seed at an outbreak site. Type B was obtained from apparently healthy rock pigeons. Fe-hyd sequencing revealed six distinct subtypes. The predominant subtype in both finches and the rock pigeon with trichomonosis was identical to the UK finch epidemic strain A1. Single nucleotide polymorphisms in Fe-hyd sequences suggest there is fine-scale variation amongst isolates and that finch trichomonosis emergence in this region may not have been caused by a single spill-over event.

Brain-stem afferents to the n. isthmo-opticus (NIO) and ectopic neurons (EN) of the centrifugal visual system (CVS) were determined in the pigeon using the retrograde transneuronal transport of the fluorescent dye Rhodamine β-isothiocyanate (RITC) after its intraocular injection. In other experiments, either RITC was injected into various periocular tissues (controls) or the retrograde tracer Fluoro-gold (FG) was injected stereotaxically in the NIO. Following intraocular injections, the RITC retrograde labeling of cell bodies was observed contralaterally in the NIO and EN and transneuronally in layers 9/10 of the optic tectum, area ventralis-Tsai, zona peri-NIII, mesencephalic and pontine reticular formation (PRF), n. linearis caudalis-raphe, and bilaterally within a region referred to as zona peri-n.NVI (Zp-n.NVI) immediately underlying the abducens nerve nucleus. None of the above structures were labeled after RITC periocular injections. The FG labeling revealed that the tectal efferent neurons were mainly medium-sized, multipolar cells whose dendrites extended superficially to retino-recipient tectal layers 6 and 5. Quantitative measurements of the distribution of layers 9/10 RITC-labeled neurons indicated the highest densities to be localized within the ventral tectum corresponding to the representation of the dorsal retina and inferior visual field. We suggest that visual and nonvisual brain-stem afferents upon NIO and EN may play a role in the proposed mechanism of the avian CVS in attention, ground-feeding behavior, and modulation of retinal sensitivity.

This study was performed in order to establish whether selective depletion of serotonin (5-HT) and its metabolite 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) in the pigeon optic tectum (TeO) induced by p-chloroamphetamine (p-CA) modified tectal evoked potentials (TEPs). TEPs in response to sinusoidal gratings of different contrast, spatial and temporal frequency were recorded in control pigeons and in pigeons intraperitoneally injected with p-CA (10 mg/kg; two administrations in consecutive days). TEPs of p-CA treated pigeons, as compared to those of control pigeons, were reduced in amplitude as a function of contrast, spatial and temporal frequency. In addition, TEPs of p-CA treated pigeons differed from those recorded in controls in their transfer characteristics of contrast and spatial frequency. In particular, TEPs of p-CA treated pigeons did not saturate at moderate contrast, unlike those of controls. Furthermore, the TEP spatial tuning in p-CA treated pigeons is broader than that in controls; it thus suggests a reduction of spatial-frequency selectivity. These findings indicate that a selective neurotoxin for serotonergic systems, such as p-CA, can serve as a useful denervation tool for the study of the serotonergic function in the pigeon TeO. In addition, selective changes of TEP properties suggest the possibility that serotonergic afferents play a modulatory role on the receptive-field characteristics of tectal neurons.

Multiunit activity was recorded in the optic tectum of awake pigeons with two electrodes at sites varying in depth and separated by 0.3 to 3.0 mm. Autocorrelation and cross-correlation functions were computed from the recorded spike trains to determine temporal relationships in the neuronal firing patterns. Cross-correlation analysis revealed that spatially separate groups of cells in the tectum show synchronous responses to a visual stimulus. Strong synchronization occurred in both superficial and deep layers of the tectum, in general with zero-phase shift. The response synchronization in the avian optic tectum resembles that observed in the mammalian cortex, suggesting that it may subserve common functions in visual processing.

Pigeons were trained on four different visual discrimination tasks: (1) concept of natural stimuli (food vs. non-food object discrimination); (2) arbitrary classification of natural stimuli (pseudoconcept); (3) concept of artificial stimuli (triangles generated by computer graphics); and (4) discrimination of one pair of artificial stimuli. Then, lesions of the ectostriatum were carried out. The ectostriatal lesions impaired the arbitrary classification of natural stimuli and the concept of artificial pattern but did not impair the natural concept or the simple discrimination of fixed two stimuli. Lesions in the neostriatum did not cause deficits in any discrimination task. The birds had to learn individual stimuli for the arbitrary classification of stimuli and the stimulus generalization test after the artificial pattern concept discrimination indicated that the pigeons formed a concept more complicated than “triangle” in human language. These results suggest that the ectostriatum plays a role in task discrimination that requires much visual processing to classify stimuli.

The responses of single cells to luminance, color and computer-generated spots, bars, kinematograms, and motion-in-depth stimuli were studied in the nucleus rotundus of pigeons. Systematic electrode penetrations revealed that there are several functionally distinct subdivisions within rotundus where six classes of visual-selective cells cluster. Cells in the dorsal-posterior zone of the nucleus respond selectively to motion in depth (i.e. an expanding or contracting figure in the visual field). Most cells recorded from the dorsal-anterior region responded selectively to the color of the stimulus. The firing rate of the cells in the anterior-central zone, however, is dramatically modulated by changing the level of illumination over the whole visual field. Cells in the ventral subdivision strongly respond to moving occlusion edges and very small moving objects, with either excitatory or inhibitory responses. These results indicate that visual information processing of color, ambient illumination, and motion in depth are segregated into different subdivisions at the level of nucleus rotundus in the avian brain.

The present study examined GABA immunoreactivity within the retinopetal nucleus isthmo-opticus (NIO) of the pigeon centrifugal visual system (CVS) using light- (immunohistofluorescence, peroxidase anti-peroxidase: PAP) and electron- (postembedding GABA immunogold) microscopic techniques. In some double-labeling experiments, the retrograde transport of the fluorescent dye rhodamine β−isothiocyanate (RITC) after its intraocular injection was combined with GABA immunohistofluorescence. GABA-immunoreactive (-ir) somata were demonstrated within the neuropilar zone of the NIO adjacent to the centrifugal cell laminae whereas the centrifugal neurons were always immunonegative. A quantitative ultrastructural analysis was performed which distinguished five categories of axon terminal profiles (P1–5) on the basis of various cytological criteria: type of synaptic contact (symmetrical or asymmetrical); shape, size, and density of synaptic vesicles as well as the immunolabeling (positive or negative), size of profile and appearance of hyaloplasm. Numerous GABA-ir afferents to centrifugal neurons via axon terminal types P2a, P2c, and P3 were observed which comprised 47.1% of the total input. Moreover, the data suggest that some of the P2a terminals, which make up 26.4% of the input, stem from the intrinsic GABA-ir interneurons, whereas the latter receive P1, P3, but also P2 terminal input, indicating that interneurons may contact other interneurons via type P2a axon terminals. The results also suggest that the GABA-ir P3 or the immunonegative P1b and P5 axon terminals are of extrinsic origin arising from cells in the optic tectum whereas the P2c and P4 axon terminals are associated with extra-tectal input to the NIO. The GABAergic innervation of centrifugal neurons within the NIO may be the basis for the demonstrated facilitatory effect of the centrifugal output upon ganglion cell responses. This is relevant to hypotheses regarding CVS involvement in attentional mechanisms through selective enhancement of retinal sensitivity depending on the location of meaningful or novel stimuli.

Despite the use of pigeons (Columba livia domestica) since 2500 BC by man for meat production, ornamentals, sports and experimental animals, limited information is available on their nutrient requirements and feeding. This could partly be attributed to the rearing of growing chicks (squabs) to mature body weight at 28 days by the parents. Squabs have an extraordinary high rate of maturing (0.1466 to 0.1945 g/d) in comparison to other domesticated avian species such as poultry (0.0450 g/d) and quail (0.077 to 0.097 g/d). This growth rate is achieved by regurgitation of a holocrine substance (crop milk) by both parents, formed in response to prolactin secretion and triggered by brooding. Crop milk consists primarily of protein (11.0 to 18.8% on as is basis) and fat (4.5 to 12.7% on as is basis), and lacks significant levels of carbohydrates. Furthermore, adult pigeons are mainly fed mixtures of whole grains. Special feeding characteristics inherent to the pigeon thus prevent extrapolation of nutrient requirements determined with other avian species. A dietary crude protein content of between 12 and 18%, and metabolizable energy (ME) content of around 12 MJ/kg, based on production of offspring, is recommended for feeding of adult pigeons. Apparent metabolizable energy, corrected for nitrogen retention (AMEn) for maize (14.76 MJ/kg), barley (12.36 MJ/kg), sorghum (13.87 MJ/kg) and peas (14.01 MJ/kg) did not differ substantially from values derived for poultry. Pigeons could utilize lipids better than carbohydrates as energy sources. Feed additives and suggestions for future research are discussed.

The head bobbing of a walking bird is considered as an optokinetic response, but the question of why head bobbing is synchronized with leg movement is not clear. It is possible that head bobbing also has biomechanical correlation with leg movement at least during walking. Movement of the centre of gravity (COG) along the sagittal axis was estimated in pigeons Columba livia from carcasses and motion analysis from video films of walking. Although it was ascertained that the head thrust observed in the double support phase helps to shift the COG over the supporting foot around the beginning of the single support phase, its effect was very small. The hold phase showed correlation with the COG positioning over the supporting foot in the single support phase. Stabilization of the eyes during the single support phase may be significant for the control of balance.

The purpose of the present study was to find out what particular stimulus features, in addition to the direction and velocity of motion, specifically activate neurons in the nucleus lentiformis mesencephali (nLM) in pigeons. Visual responses of 60 nLM cells to a variety of computer-generated stimuli were extracellularly recorded and quantitatively analyzed. Ten recording sites were histologically verified to be localized within nLM with cobalt sulfide markings. It was shown that the pigeon nLM cells were specifically sensitive to the leading edge moving at the optimal velocity in the preferred direction through their excitatory receptive fields (ERFs). Generally speaking, nLM cells preferred black edges to white ones. However, this preference cannot be explained by OFF-responses to a light spot. The edge sharpness was also an essential factor influencing the responsive strength, with blurred edges producing little or no visual responses at all. These neurons vigorously responded to black edge orientated perpendicular to, and moved in, the preferred direction; the magnitude of visual responses was reduced with changing orientation. The spatial summation occurred in all neurons tested, characterized by the finding that neuronal firings increased as the leading edge was lengthened until saturation was reached. On the other hand, it appeared that nLM neurons could not detect any differences in the shape and area of stimuli with an identical edge. These data suggested that feature extraction characteristics of nLM neurons may be specialized for detecting optokinetic stimuli, but not for realizing pattern recognition. This seems to be at least one of the reasons why large-field gratings or random-dot patterns have been used to study visual responses of accessory optic neurons and optokinetic nystagmus, because many high-contrast edges in these stimuli can activate a neuron to periodically discharge, or groups of neurons to simultaneously fire to elicit optokinetic reflex.

Dans l'objectif de l'amélioration des performances pondérales du pigeonneau commercial au Maroc, la présente étude vise l'exploitation de l'effet bénéfique du croisement de deux races locales dites Beldi et Mgandi par la race Sottobanca d'origine italienne.

L'élevage est réalisé en claustration complète dans des parquets identiques soumis à des conditions sanitaires et alimentaires bien contrôlées.

La comparaison des résultats des croisements des trois races révèle une variabilité significative du poids des pigeonneaux à l'âge d'abattage (28 jours) en fonction de la race du père, de la race de la mère, de leur interaction et du sexe du pigeonneau. En outre, les différences notées entre les performances des hybrides issus de croisements réciproques semblent être liées à des effets maternels. Les meilleures conformations sont obtenues chez les pigeonneaux mâles issus du croisement d'une femelle Sottobanca par un mâle Beldi ou Mgandi.

Par ailleurs, l'étude comparative de l'écart de performances entre les parents et les hybrides a montré que l'expression de l'hétérosis dépend de la distance génétique entre les races croisées. Ainsi, la combinaison des deux races Sottobanca et Beldi a donné le meilleur effet hétérotique

Centrifugal modulation of visual responsiveness of tectal cells by the isthmo-optic nucleus (ION) through the retina was studied in homing pigeons. Visual activity evoked by computer-generated stimuli was reduced by an average of 59% in tectal cells whose receptive fields (RFs) either overlapped with, or were close to, those of isthmo-optic cells whose activity was blocked by the injection of lidocaine through micropipettes. Activity usually recovered to 87% of pre-drug controls in 8–17 min (average 12.3 min) after stopping lidocaine injections. Those tectal cells whose RFs were far from those of ION cells did not show clear-cut changes in their visual responsiveness to isthmo-optic lidocaine application. The spatial relationship between receptive fields of tectal and isthmo-optic cells, saline controls, as well as the specificity, reproducibility and reversibility of effects of ION-injected lidocaine on tectal activity, show that this chemical action is pharmacological, not toxicological. Neuronal circuitry underlying centrifugal modulation of tectal activity by isthmo-optic cells is discussed.
