The interplay between chemical reaction and substrate deformation is discussed by adapting Ranz's formulation for scalar mixing to the case of a reactive mixture between segregated reactants, initially separated by an interface whose thickness may not be vanishingly small. Experiments in a simple shear flow demonstrate the existence of three regimes depending on the Damköhler number $Da=t_s/t_c$ where $t_s$ is the mixing time of the interface width and $t_c$ is the chemical time. Instead of treating explicitly the chemical cross-term, we rationalize these different regimes by globalizing it as a production term involving a flux which depends on the rate at which the reaction zone is fed by the reactants, a formulation valid for $Da>1$. For $Da<1$, the reactants interpenetrate before they react, giving rise to a ‘diffusio-chemical’ regime where chemical production occurs within a substrate whose width is controlled by molecular diffusion.

We consider the numerical solution of competitive exothermic and endothermic reactions in the presence of a chaotic advection flow. The resulting behaviour is characterized by a strong dependence on the competitive reaction history. The burnt temperature is not immediately connected to simple enthalpy calculations, so there is a subtlety in the interplay between the major parameters, notably the Damköhler number, the ratio of the heats of exothermic and endothermic reactions, as well as the ratio of their respective activation energies. This paper seeks to explore the way these parameters affect the steady states of these reaction fronts and their stability.

We investigate the behaviour of a reactive plume in the two limiting cases of slow and instantaneous chemical reactions. New laboratory measurements show that, whereas the slow reaction between the source and entrained chemical species takes place within the whole volume of each eddy in the plume, the fast reaction develops preferentially at the periphery of the eddies. We develop a new model that quantifies the mixing of the reactive buoyant fluids at the Batchelor scale and thereby the progress of the fast reaction. We present a series of new experimental results that suggest that a critical distance from the source, $z_{crit}$, exists at which the volume of fluid that is entrained from the ambient is equal to that which is mixed within the plume at the Batchelor scale. For $z>z_{crit}$, only a fraction of the entrained fluid is rapidly mixed and reacts with the plume fluid. The results of the new experiments enable us to quantify the distance from the source at which an instantaneous reaction reaches completion, and show that it can be significantly larger than the distance $L_{s}$ at which the stoichiometric dilution of the plume fluid is achieved. In the limit of an instantaneous reaction, the longitudinal profiles of source chemical concentration in the plume depend on $(z_{crit}/L_{s})^{5/6}$. The predictions of the model are validated against the experimental results, and the profiles of source chemical concentration in the plume for slow and fast reactions are compared.

A linear numerical study is conducted to quantify the effect of swirl on the response behaviour of premixed lean flames to general harmonic excitation in the inlet, upstream of combustion. This study considers axisymmetric M-flames and is based on the linearised compressible Navier–Stokes equations augmented by a simple one-step irreversible chemical reaction. Optimal frequency response gains for both axisymmetric and non-axisymmetric perturbations are computed via a direct–adjoint methodology and singular value decompositions. The high-dimensional parameter space, containing perturbation and base-flow parameters, is explored by taking advantage of generic sensitivity information gained from the adjoint solutions. This information is then tailored to specific parametric sensitivities by first-order perturbation expansions of the singular triplets about the respective parameters. Valuable flow information, at a negligible computational cost, is gained by simple weighted scalar products between direct and adjoint solutions. We find that for non-swirling flows, a mode with azimuthal wavenumber $m=2$ is the most efficiently driven structure. The structural mechanism underlying the optimal gains is shown to be the Orr mechanism for $m=0$ and a blend of Orr and other mechanisms, such as lift-up, for other azimuthal wavenumbers. Further to this, velocity and pressure perturbations are shown to make up the optimal input and output showing that the thermoacoustic mechanism is crucial in large energy amplifications. For $m=0$ these velocity perturbations are mainly longitudinal, but for higher wavenumbers azimuthal velocity fluctuations become prominent, especially in the non-swirling case. Sensitivity analyses are carried out with respect to the Mach number, Reynolds number and swirl number, and the accuracy of parametric gradients of the frequency response curve is assessed. The sensitivity analysis reveals that increases in Reynolds and Mach numbers yield higher gains, through a decrease in temperature diffusion. A rise in mean-flow swirl is shown to diminish the gain, with increased damping for higher azimuthal wavenumbers. This leads to a reordering of the most effectively amplified mode, with the axisymmetric ($m=0$) mode becoming the dominant structure at moderate swirl numbers.

In this paper we study the essential role of Darrieus–Landau (DL), hydrodynamic, cellular flame-front instability in the propagation of expanding turbulent flames. First, we analyse and compare the characteristic time scales of flame wrinkling under the simultaneous actions of DL instability and turbulent eddies, based on which three turbulent flame propagation regimes are identified, namely, instability dominated, instability–turbulence interaction and turbulence dominated regimes. We then perform experiments over an extensive range of conditions, including high pressures, to promote and manipulate the DL instability. The results clearly demonstrate the increase in the acceleration exponent of the turbulent flame propagation as these three regimes are traversed from the weakest to the strongest, which are respectively similar to those of the laminar cellularly unstable flame and the turbulent flame without flame-front instability, and thus validating the scaling analysis. Finally, based on the scaling analysis and the experimental results, we propose a modification of the conventional turbulent flame regime diagram to account for the effects of DL instability.

The present work focuses on the flame–wall interaction (FWI) based on direct numerical simulations (DNS) of a head-on premixed flame quenching configuration at the statistically stationary state. The effects of FWI on the turbulent flame temperature, wall heat flux, flame dynamics and flow structures were investigated. In turbulent head-on quenching, particularly for high turbulence intensity, the distorted flames generally consist of the head-on flame part and the entrained flame part. The flame properties are jointly influenced by turbulence, heat generation from chemical reactions and heat loss to the cold wall boundary. For the present FWI configuration, as the wall is approached, the ‘influence zone’ can be identified as the region within which the flame temperature, scalar gradient and flame dilatation start to decrease, whereas the wall heat flux tends to increase. As the distance to the wall drops below the flame-quenching distance, approximately where the wall heat flux reaches its maximum value, chemical reactions become negligibly weak inside the ‘quenching zone’. A simplified counter-flow model is also proposed. With the reasonably proposed relation between the flame speed and the flame temperature, the model solutions match well with the DNS results, both qualitatively and quantitatively. Moreover, near-wall statistics of some important flame properties, including the flame dilatation, reaction progress variable gradient, tangential strain rate and curvature were analysed in detail under different wall boundary conditions.

An exponential horn geometry is introduced in order to establish cellular detonations with a constant mean lateral mass divergence, propagating at quasi-steady speeds below the Chapman–Jouguet value. The experiments were conducted in $2\text{C}_{2}\text{H}_{2}+5\text{O}_{2}+21\text{Ar}$ and $\text{C}_{3}\text{H}_{8}+5\text{O}_{2}$. Numerical simulations were also performed for weakly unstable cellular detonations to test the validity of the exponential horn geometry. The experiments and simulations demonstrated that such quasi-steady state detonations can be realized, hence permitting us to obtain the relations between the detonation speed and mean lateral flow divergence for cellular detonations in an unambiguous manner. The experimentally obtained speed ($D$) dependencies on divergence ($K$) were compared with the predictions for steady detonations with lateral flow divergence obtained with the real thermo-chemical data of the mixtures. For the $2\text{C}_{2}\text{H}_{2}+5\text{O}_{2}+21\text{Ar}$ system, reasonable agreement was found between the experiments and steady wave prediction, particularly for the critical divergence leading to failure. Observations of the reaction zone structure in these detonations indicated that all the gas reacted very close to the front, as the transverse waves were reactive. The experiments obtained in the much more unstable detonations in $\text{C}_{3}\text{H}_{8}+5\text{O}_{2}$ showed significant differences between the experimentally derived $D(K)$ curve and the prediction of steady wave propagation. The latter was found to significantly under-predict the detonability of cellular detonations. The transverse waves in this mixture were found to be non-reactive, hence permitting the shedding of non-reacted pockets, which burn via turbulent flames on their surface. It is believed that the large differences between experiment and the inviscid model in this class of cellular structures is due to the importance of diffusive processes in the burn-out of the non-reacted pockets. The empirical tuning of a global one-step chemical model to describe the macro-scale kinetics in cellular detonations revealed that the effective activation energy was lower by 14 % in $2\text{C}_{2}\text{H}_{2}+5\text{O}_{2}+21\text{Ar}$ and 54 % in the more unstable $\text{C}_{3}\text{H}_{8}+5\text{O}_{2}$ system. This confirms previous observations that diffusive processes in highly unstable detonations are responsible for reducing the thermal ignition character of the gases processed by the detonation front.

This paper presents 5 kHz stereo particle image velocimetry and OH planar laser induced fluorescence measurements of transversely forced swirl flames. The presence of transverse forcing on this naturally unstable flow both influences the natural instabilities, as well as amplifies disturbances that may not necessarily manifest themselves during natural oscillations. By manipulating the structure of the acoustic forcing field, both axisymmetric and helical modes are preferentially excited away from the frequency of natural instability. The paper presents a method for spatially interpolating the phase locked $r{-}z$ and $r{-}\unicode[STIX]{x1D703}$ planar velocity and flame position data, extracting the full three-dimensional structure of the helical disturbances. These helical disturbances are also decomposed into symmetric and anti-symmetric disturbances about the jet core, showing the subsequent axial evolution (in magnitude and phase) of each of these underlying disturbances. It is shown that out-of-phase acoustic forcing excites $m=\pm 1$ modes, but the flow field preferentially amplifies the counter-winding, co-rotating helical disturbance over the co-winding, counter-rotating helical disturbance. This causes the flow and flame to transition from a transverse flapping near the jet exit to a precessing motion further downstream. In contrast, in-phase forcing promotes axisymmetric $m=0$ disturbances which dominate the flow field over the entire axial domain. In both cases, the amplitudes of the anti-symmetric disturbances about the jet core grow with downstream distance before saturating and decaying, while the symmetric disturbances appear nearly negligible. It is suggested that this saturation and decay is due to linear effects (e.g. a negative spatial growth rate), rather than nonlinear interactions.

This study focuses on the response of premixed flames to a transient hydrodynamic perturbation in an intermediate situation between laminar stretched flames and turbulent flames: an axisymmetric vortex interacting with a flame. The reasons motivating this choice are discussed in the framework of turbulent combustion models and flame response to the stretch rate. We experimentally quantify the dependence of the flame kinematic properties (displacement and consumption speeds) to geometrical scalars (stretch rate and curvature) in flames characterized by different effective Lewis numbers. Whilst the displacement speed can be readily measured using particle image velocimetry and tomographic diagnostics, providing a reliable estimate of the consumption speed from experiments remains particularly challenging. In the present work, a method based on a budget of fuel on a well chosen domain is proposed and validated both experimentally and numerically using two-dimensional direct numerical simulations of flame/vortex interactions. It is demonstrated that the Lewis number impact neither the geometrical nor the kinematic features of the flames, these quantities being much more influenced by the vortex intensity. While interacting with the vortex, the flame displacement (at an isotherm close to the leading edge) and consumption speeds are found to increase almost independently of the type of fuel. We show that the total stretch rate is not the only scalar quantity impacting the flame displacement and consumption speeds and that curvature has a significant influence. Experimental data are interpreted in the light of asymptotic theories revealing the existence of two distinct Markstein numbers, one characterizing the dependence of flame speed to curvature, the other to the total stretch rate. This theory appears to be well suited for representing the evolution of the displacement speed with respect to either the total stretch rate, curvature or strain rate. It also explains the limited dependence of the flame displacement speed to Lewis number and the strong correlation with curvature observed in the experiments. An explicit relationship between displacement and consumption speeds is also given, indicating that the fuel consumption rate is likely to be altered by both the total stretch rate and curvature.

A one-dimensional, unsteady nozzle flow is modelled to identify the sources of indirect noise in multicomponent gases. First, from non-equilibrium thermodynamics relations, it is shown that a compositional inhomogeneity advected in an accelerating flow is a source of sound induced by inhomogeneities in the mixture (i) chemical potentials and (ii) specific heat capacities. Second, it is shown that the acoustic, entropy and compositional linear perturbations evolve independently from each other and they become coupled through mean-flow gradients and/or at the boundaries. Third, the equations are cast in invariant formulation and a mathematical solution is found by asymptotic expansion of path-ordered integrals with an infinite radius of convergence. Finally, the transfer functions are calculated for a supersonic nozzle with finite spatial extent perturbed by a methane–air compositional inhomogeneity. The proposed framework will help identify and quantify the sources of sound in nozzles with relevance, for example, to aeronautical gas turbines.

This work presents the analysis of a transverse combustion instability in a reduced-scale rocket engine. The study is conducted on a time-resolved database of three-dimensional fields obtained via large-eddy simulation. The physical mechanisms involved in the response of the coaxial hydrogen/oxygen flames are discussed through the analysis of the Rayleigh term in the disturbance-energy equation. The interaction between acoustics and vorticity, also explicit in the disturbance-energy balance, is shown to be the main damping mechanism for this instability. The relative contributions of Rayleigh and damping terms, depending on the position of the flame with respect to the acoustic field, are discussed. The results give new insight into the phenomenology of transverse combustion instabilities. Finally, the applicability of spectral analysis on the nonlinear Rayleigh and dissipation terms is discussed.

This article reports an analysis of the first detailed chemistry direct numerical simulation (DNS) of a high Karlovitz number laboratory premixed flame. The DNS results are first compared with those from laser-based diagnostics with good agreement. The subsequent analysis focuses on a detailed investigation of the flame area, its local thickness and their rates of change in isosurface following reference frames, quantities that are intimately connected. The net flame stretch is demonstrated to be a small residual of large competing terms: the positive tangential strain term and the negative curvature stretch term. The latter is found to be driven by flame speed–curvature correlations and dominated in net by low probability highly curved regions. Flame thickening is demonstrated to be substantial on average, while local regions of flame thinning are also observed. The rate of change of the flame thickness (as measured by the scalar gradient magnitude) is demonstrated, analogously to flame stretch, to be a competition between straining tending to increase gradients and flame speed variations in the normal direction tending to decrease them. The flame stretch and flame thickness analyses are connected by the observation that high positive tangential strain rate regions generally correspond with low curvature regions; these regions tend to be positively stretched in net and are relatively thinner compared with other regions. High curvature magnitude regions (both positive and negative) generally correspond with lower tangential strain; these regions are in net negatively stretched and thickened substantially.

We numerically investigate the direct initiation of detonations driven by the propagation of a blast wave into a unconfined gaseous combustible mixture to study the role played by multidimensional instabilities in direct initiation of stable and unstable detonations. To this end, we first model the dynamics of unsteady propagation of detonation using the one-dimensional compressible Euler equations with a one-step chemical reaction model and cylindrical geometrical source terms. Subsequently, we use two-dimensional compressible Euler equations with just the chemical reaction source term to directly model cylindrical detonations. The one-dimensional results suggest that there are three regimes in the direct initiation for stable detonations, that the critical energy for mildly unstable detonations is not unique, and that highly unstable detonations are not self-sustainable. These phenomena agree well with one-dimensional theories and computations available in the literature. However, our two-dimensional results indicate that one-dimensional approaches are valid only for stable detonations. In mildly and highly unstable detonations, one-dimensional approaches break down because they cannot take the effects and interactions of multidimensional instabilities into account. In fact, instabilities generated in multidimensional settings yield the formation of strong transverse waves that, on one hand, increase the risk of failure of the detonation and, on the other hand, lead to the initiation of local over-driven detonations that enhance the overall self-sustainability of the global process. The competition between these two possible outcomes plays an important role in the direct initiation of detonations.

The unstart phenomena in a model scramjet with a free stream Mach number of 4.5 were investigated at an arc-heated hypersonic wind tunnel. High-speed schlieren imaging and high resonance frequency pressure measurements were used to capture the flow features during the unstart process. Three unstart conditions were tested: (i) a low-enthalpy free stream with mass loading, (ii) a high-enthalpy free stream with mass loading and (iii) a high-enthalpy free stream with mass loading and heat release. It was revealed that the unstart threshold and the time from the onset to the completion of unstart depended strongly on the mass loading rate and the heat exchange. The negative heat addition (cooling) significantly increased the threshold of mass flow rate triggering unstart. The decrement of the mass flow rate threshold for unstart was observed in the presence of heat release by combustion. The observed transient and quasi-steady behaviours of the unstart shockwave system and the jet motion were similar in all of the test conditions. On the other hand, at the lip of inlet model, the unstart shockwave under the cold free stream condition exhibited a relatively steady behaviour while severe oscillatory flow motions of the jet and the unstart shockwave were observed in the combustion-driven unstart process. The different unstarted flow behaviours between the three flow conditions were explained using a simplified one-dimensional flow choking analysis and use of the Korkegi criterion.

A global analysis of steady states of low Mach number inviscid premixed reacting swirling flows in a straight circular finite-length open pipe is developed. We focus on modelling the basic interaction between the swirl and heat release of the reaction. For analytic simplicity, a one-step first-order Arrhenious reaction kinetics is considered in the limit of high activation energy and infinite Peclet number. Assuming a complete reaction with chemical equilibrium upstream and downstream of the reaction zone, a nonlinear partial differential equation is derived for the solution of the flow stream function downstream of the reaction zone in terms of the specific total enthalpy, specific entropy and circulation functions prescribed at the inlet. Several types of solutions of the nonlinear ordinary differential equation for the columnar flow case describe the outlet states of the flow in a long pipe. These solutions are used to form the bifurcation diagram of steady reacting flows with swirl as the inlet swirl level is increased at a fixed heat release from the reaction. The approach is applied to two profiles of inlet flows, the solid-body rotation and the Lamb–Oseen vortex, both with constant profiles of the axial velocity, temperature and mixture reactant mass fraction. The computed results provide theoretical predictions of the critical inlet swirl levels for the appearance of vortex breakdown states and for the size of the breakdown zone as a function of the inlet flow swirl level, Mach number and heat release of the reaction. For the inlet solid-body rotation, flow is decelerated to breakdown as the inlet swirl is increased above the critical swirl level, and there is a delay in the appearance of breakdown with the increase of the heat release of the reaction. For the inlet Lamb–Oseen vortex at low values of heat release, the critical swirl for breakdown is decreased with the increase of heat release while, at high values of heat release, the appearance of breakdown is delayed to higher incoming flow swirl levels with the increase of heat release. The analysis sheds light on the global dynamics of low Mach number reacting flows with swirl and vortex breakdown and on the interaction between vortex breakdown and heat release that affects the shape of the reaction zone in the domain.

Since its introduction in the late 19th century, symmetry breaking has been found to play a crucial role in physics. In particular, it appears as one key phenomenon controlling hydrodynamic and acoustic instabilities in problems with rotational symmetries. A previous paper investigated its desired potential application to the control of circumferential thermoacoustic modes in one annular cavity coupled with multiple flames (Bauerheim et al., J. Fluid Mech., vol. 760, 2014, pp. 431–465). The present paper focuses on a similar problem when symmetry breaking appears unintentionally, for example when uncertainties due to tolerances are taken into account. It yields a large uncertainty quantification (UQ) problem containing numerous uncertain parameters. To tackle this well-known ‘curse of dimensionality’, a novel UQ methodology is used. It relies on the active subspace approach to construct a reduced set of input variables. This strategy is applied on two annular cavities coupled by 19 flames to determine its modal risk factor, i.e. the probability of an azimuthal acoustic mode being unstable. Since each flame is modelled by two uncertain parameters, it leads to a large UQ problem involving 38 parameters. An acoustic network model is then derived, which yields a nonlinear dispersion relation for azimuthal modes. This nonlinear problem, subject to bifurcations, is solved quasi-analytically. Results show that the dimension of the probabilistic problem can be drastically reduced, from 38 uncertain parameters to only 3. Moreover, it is found that the three active variables are related to physical quantities, which unveils underlying phenomena controlling the stability of the two coupled cavities. The first active variable is associated with a coupling strength controlling the bifurcation of the system, while the two others correspond to a symmetry-breaking effect induced by the uncertainties. Thus, an additional destabilization effect appear caused by the non-uniform pattern of the uncertainty distribution, which breaks the initial rotating symmetry of the annular cavities. Finally, the active subspace is exploited by fitting the response surface with polynomials (linear, quadratic and cubic). By comparing accuracy and cost, results prove that 5 % error can be achieved with only 30 simulations on the reduced space, whereas 2000 are required on the complete initial space. It exemplifies that this novel UQ technique can accurately predict the risk factor of an annular configuration at low cost as well as unveil key parameters controlling the stability.

A layered description of the structure of turbulent flame brushes is provided for situations featuring large but finite values of the Damköhler number, which correspond to the wrinkled flame regime of turbulent premixed combustion. One special focus of this study is placed on the description of the leading edge of the turbulent flame brush, the role of which is known to be essential with respect to propagation, transport and stabilization issues. On the basis of rather simple and well-identified working hypotheses, the influence of slight increases in the Karlovitz number values is revealed. The phenomenology and associated statistics are also investigated analytically, which leads to a mathematical description of the leading edge internal structure. With respect to the progress variable statistics, i.e. probability density function, this leading edge can indeed be thought of as the inner part of a boundary layer where the influence of the finite thickness of laminar flamelets can no longer be neglected. From the proposed description, standard fast-chemistry closures, which are currently used to perform the numerical simulation of turbulent combustion, may easily be generalized to account for the finite-rate chemistry effects occurring in this sublayer, thus emphasizing the interest of the present analysis for turbulent combustion theory and modelling.

A turbulent lifted slot-jet flame is studied using direct numerical simulation (DNS). A one-step chemistry model is employed with a mixture-fraction-dependent activation energy which can reproduce qualitatively the dependence of the laminar burning rate on the equivalence ratio that is typical of hydrocarbon fuels. The basic structure of the flame base is first examined and discussed in the context of earlier experimental studies of lifted flames. Several features previously observed in experiments are noted and clarified. Some other unobserved features are also noted. Comparison with previous DNS modelling of hydrogen flames reveals significant structural differences. The statistics of flow and relative edge-flame propagation velocity components conditioned on the leading edge locations are then examined. The results show that, on average, the streamwise flame propagation and streamwise flow balance, thus demonstrating that edge-flame propagation is the basic stabilisation mechanism. Fluctuations of the edge locations and net edge velocities are, however, significant. It is demonstrated that the edges tend to move in an essentially two-dimensional (2D) elliptical pattern (laterally outwards towards the oxidiser, then upstream, then inwards towards the fuel, then downstream again). It is proposed that this is due to the passage of large eddies, as outlined in Su et al. (Combust. Flame, vol. 144 (3), 2006, pp. 494–512). However, the mechanism is not entirely 2D, and out-of-plane motion is needed to explain how flames escape the high-velocity inner region of the jet. Finally, the time-averaged structure is examined. A budget of terms in the transport equation for the product mass fraction is used to understand the stabilisation from a time-averaged perspective. The result of this analysis is found to be consistent with the instantaneous perspective. The budget reveals a fundamentally 2D structure, involving transport in both the streamwise and transverse directions, as opposed to possible mechanisms involving a dominance of either one direction of transport. It features upstream transport balanced by entrainment into richer conditions, while on the rich side, upstream turbulent transport and entrainment from leaner conditions balance the streamwise convection.

Mixing and reaction between two scalars initially separated by scalar-free ambient fluid is important in problems ranging from ecology to engineering. Using a two-channel planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF) system the instantaneous spatial structure of two independent scalars emitted from parallel jets into a slow coflow is quantified. Of particular interest is the scalar covariance used to define the correlation coefficient. Joint probability distribution functions (JPDFs) and instantaneous images of the scalar fields demonstrate that initially the flow mainly consists of incursions of fluid from one jet into the other, and vice versa, before scalars have time to assemble in attracting regions of the flow and coalesce due to diffusive flux. Decomposing the joint probability distribution exhibits the effect these events have on scaler overlap and scalar covariance. Along the centreline near where the mean profiles of the jets meet, the scalar covariance is negative; however, the covariance becomes positive as the scalars converge in shared structure and diffusive flux bridges a reduced barrier of ambient fluid. The mixing path between scalar filaments can be probabilistically observed through the conditional diffusion of the two scalars at various points in the flow.
