In this study, we tested the hypothesis that a micro-serrated edge on the honey bee Apis mellifera stinger tip serves as a tool for more intensive crushing of cell membranes in the victim's tissues. This could have mechanical consequences as well as initiate metabolic pathways linked to cell membrane breakdown (e.g., production of biogenic amines). Accordingly, we found that hymenopteran species that use their stingers as an offensive or defensive weapon to do as much damage to the victim's body as possible had this cuticular microstructure. In parasitic hymenopterans, on the other hand, this structure was missing, as stingers are solely used to delicately transport venom to the victim's body in order to do little mechanical harm. We also demonstrated that the stinger lancets of the honey bee A. mellifera are living organs with sensilla innervated by sensory neurons and containing other essential tissues, rather than mere cuticular structures.

The meadow spittlebug, Philaenus spumarius (Linnaeus) (Hemiptera: Aphrophoridae), is an important vector for the xylem-limited bacterium Xylella fastidiosa (Wells, Raju, Hung, Weisburg, Mandelco-Paul, and Brenner), which is associated with olive quick decline syndrome in southern Italy. The mouthparts of Hemiptera have important roles in host plant selection, feeding behavior and for vectoring pathogens that cause plant diseases. In this study, the functional morphology of the sensory structures located on the labium tip and precibarium of P. spumarius was investigated using scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The labium tip is composed of two symmetrical sensory complexes, each with five different types of sensilla: aporous sensilla trichodea type 1 and 2; uniporous sensilla chaetica type 1 and 2; and multiporous sensilla basiconica. The precibarium of P. spumarius has two kinds of sensory structures: bulbous sensilla and papillae sensilla. In particular, two groups of sensilla are located on the epipharynx: a distal group that consists of ten papillae sensilla and a proximal group composed of six papillae sensilla and two bulbous sensilla, while the hypopharynx has only two papillae sensilla. The involvement of these sensory structures in the context of feeding behavior and pathogen transmission is discussed.

Sensilla are sense organs in insects, typically consisting of a group of cuticle or epidermal cells that appear as hairs or rod-shaped structures. Sensilla serve as the functional elements of sensory systems. The goal of this study was to determine the type and distribution of sensilla in the antennae of Sitophilus granarius (L.) using light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). This is one of the first studies in which the morphology and distribution patterns of sensilla on antennal segments of male and female S. granarius have been investigated using SEM, followed by TEM. Different morphological sensilla types, including two sensilla basiconica (SB) types, with two subtypes, four sensilla coeloconica (SC) types and five sensilla chaetica (SCH) types, with one subtype, have been identified on S. granarius antennae, whose external structure and shape are peculiar. TEM micrographs of SB on the antennae of S. granarius are characterized by strongly corrugated pores around the cuticle, while micrographs of SC longitudinal sections showed flat-tipped and smooth-surfaced pegs bearing an apical pore that is suggestive of a gustatory function. TEM micrographs of SCH longitudinal sections showed dendrite branches and cuticular pore arrow heads that may be involved in the perception of humidity, temperature, heat and CO2. Because SCH of different sizes were distributed around the head and rostrum, these may function as contact-chemoreceptors .These results are discussed in relation to the possible roles of the sensilla types in the host location behavior of S. granarius.

Metaphycus flavus (Howard) (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) is a facultatively gregarious endoparasitoid of soft scales (Hemiptera: Coccidae). When it develops in superparasitised hosts, the larvae often attack and consume brood mates six or more days post oviposition. Under our laboratory conditions (25±1°C and 14 hours of light followed by 18±1°C and ten hours of darkness in 50–70% R.H.), M. flavus eggs hatched three days after oviposition. Measurements of the mandibles and tentorium indicate there are four larval instars, and M. flavus reaches the fourth instar by day six post oviposition, and pupates on day eight. Thus, cannibalism among M. flavus larvae occurs during the fourth instar. During this instar, M. flavus larvae separate from their attachment to the scale cuticle, to which they were tethered by a respiratory structure during the previous three larval instars. Once detached, they are free to move within the scale, which increases the probability of larval encounters and aggressive behaviours. Moreover, the mandibles of the fourth instar are better adapted for fighting than are those of the first three larval instars, since they are larger and more sclerotized. The cranium and mouthparts of M. flavus have four different types of sensory organs, some of which are almost certainly olfactory, an unexpected function for a larva that presumably is surrounded by an aqueous medium where gustatory sensilla would seem to be more appropriate. The cranium also bears two pairs of what appear to be secretory pores.

Electrophysiological techniques were used to obtain recordings of extracellular electrical activity from the anterior end of live adult females of Brugia pahangi. Stimulation with 100mM, 10mM and 1mM acetylcholine resulted in an increase in spike activity which was concentration dependent, whereas stimulation with phosphate-buffered saline and 0·1mM acetylcholine gave no increase in activity. The delay in response was not concentration dependent. The action of possible host cues was investigated. Stimulation with heat-inactivated foetal calf serum (IFCS) and 10mM glutathione gave an increase in spike activity but exposure to 5mg/dl haemoglobin elicited no response. The response to IFCS was found to be suppressed completely by pre-incubation for 30min in ivermectin.

Many species of nymphalid butterflies only exceptionally visit flowers and feed instead on tree sap, juice of rotting fruits and other decaying substances. To investigate whether the proboscis morphology of these non-flower-visiting Nymphalidae differs from that of nectarivorous butterflies, representatives from 64 nymphalid species with known feeding preferences were examined. Morphometric comparison of the proboscis revealed characteristic differences in proboscis length, tip-region length, wall composition, and number and shape of proboscis sensilla between these two feeding guilds. The investigated non-flower-visiting species belonging to Apaturinae, Limenitidinae, Morphinae, Brassolinae, Nymphalinae and Satyrinae, possess a relatively short and light-coloured proboscis which has a long tip-region with a great number of club-shaped sensilla styloconica. Densely arranged, these sensilla form a flat brush located laterally from the openings into the food canal on the dorsal side of the tip-region. Among the non-flower-visiting species, a second type of proboscis was found in fruit-feeding Charaxinae the stout tip-region of which is equipped with more widely spaced sensilla styloconica. The investigated flower-visiting Heliconiinae, Nymphalinae, Satyrinae, Danainae and Ithomiinae are characterized by a slender, darker-coloured proboscis with a rather short tip-region bearing fewer sensilla styloconica in a loose arrangement. Discriminant analysis revealed that the tip-region length, the number of sensilla styloconica and the relative proboscis length are the most important discriminating variables between the flower-visiting and the non-flower-visiting species. The proboscis morphology of nymphalid butterflies corresponds with certain feeding habits and allow us to make predictions on their food preferences. The ‘brush-tipped’ proboscis seems to have a functional role in the accumulation of fluid and the uptake of liquid from wet surfaces such as rotting fruits or tree sap. We conclude from the phylogeny of the examined taxa that this derived proboscis tip morphology evolved several times independently as an adaptation to the exploitation of new food resources.

The present study revealed that the ratio of antennal to body length in Lipaphis erysimi (Kalt.) increased from 0.55: 1.00 in the first instar to 0.75: 1.00 in the adult alatae as compared to apterae, where the ratio stayed almost the same. The antenna showed specific growth regions i.e. first and fourth annuli, where the increase in size was more compared to other parts. Five morphologically distinct types of sensilla were recorded i.e. sensilla companiform. sensilla trichodea with enlarged spatulate tips, sensilla trichodea with tapering uniporous tips, plate organs and coeloconic pegs. The distribution pattern of these sensilla showed that the number of sensilla trichodea increased during the development, the increase was more in alatae compared to apterae. The secondary sensoria were restricted to adult alatae only, but could be seen under the cuticle in fourth instar alatae. In addition, the variation in the surface sculpturing in the form of scale-like projections were also observed on the antenna.

The morphology of the sensilla sensitive to vertebrate host-associated stimuli is diverse reflecting the numerous independent origins of haematophagy within the insects. Using electron microscopic techniques, the sensilla of mosquitoes and blackflies have been the most thoroughly studied, although numerous works have been conducted on other blood-feeders. Notably lacking are fine structure studies on blood-feeding maggots and ectoparasitic, adult Muscomorpha.

In comparing blood-feeders with other insects it becomes apparent that: (1) carbon dioxide plays a significantly greater role in location of food by haematophagous insects than by phytophagous and saprophagous species; (2) only in blood-feeders do the adenosine phosphate nucleotides, a single group of compounds, appear to be the phagostimulants for almost all species; and (3) feeding deterrents are unknown in haematophagous insects.

When the sensory complements of the various groups of blood-feeders are compared, three points emerge. First, reduction in numbers of olfactory chemosensilla that mediate odour cues used in long-distance, host-orientation occurs in male nematocerans and in females of completely autogenous species of mosquitoes and black flies. Second, there is a striking correlation between the number of labial chemo- and mechanosensilla and the feeding behaviour of the insect. Third, there is a possible positive correlation between the number of chemosensitive antennal neurones and the distance travelled by the insect to the host.

Trichoid, basiconic and campaniform sensilla have been observed on the ovipositor and tarsi of the sorghum shootfly, Atherigona seccata Rondani. The ovipositor of A. seccata comprises abdominal segments 6–9, with most of the trichoid sensilla located on the ninth segment. Two olfactory pegs each are located on the paired leaflets of the ninth segment. Sensilla on the tarsi include long and short basiconic sensilla and campaniform sensilla located near the anterior margin of the last tarsal segment.

The sensory organs on the head capsule of the larva were studied by light, scanning and transmission electron microscopes. Four types of sensory receptors were observed on the cephalic lobes. They consist of four knob-shaped sensilla, two styloconic sensilla, two campaniform sensilla, and eight basiconic sensilla.
