This study analysed and compared the shell shape, morphometrics and relative growth of four sympatric limpet species (Patella depressa, Patella ulyssiponensis, Patella vulgata and Siphonaria pectinata) collected at Praia da Luz in Lagos (Algarve coast – southern Portugal). Morphometric relationships were established through regression analysis between linear (shell length, width and height), ponderal (total weight), area (shell base and surface areas) and volume variables (shell internal and total volumes). Relative growth (isometry vs allometry) was analysed to assess variation in the growth rate of morphometric variables throughout the species ontogeny. In addition, morphometric indices (ellipticity, conicity, density, surface area and volumetry) were calculated to further characterize shell shape. Overall, 1482 individuals with broad size and weight ranges were analysed (P. depressa = 354; P. ulyssiponensis = 306; P. vulgata = 408; S. pectinata = 414). All regressions were highly significant (P < 0.001) and the morphometric variables were strongly correlated (r = 0.761 to 0.994). Among 28 morphometric relationships, there were 14 isometries, 13 positive allometries and only one negative allometry. The morphometric indices revealed clear morphological differences between species and were mostly size-dependent, reflecting gradual changes in shell shape during growth. The main results are compared with a compilation of analogous data reported for these limpet species throughout their distributional range. Overall, the general trends in relative growth are discussed in terms of the species life habits, main traits and functional morphology.

The alpha taxonomy of scaphopods is based mainly on the shell morphology, as it is for most molluscs. In the last three decades, the employment of morphometric variables of the shell in combination with statistics has considerably increased to aid species discrimination, but this has not been used above species level. In this study, a traditional morphometric approach was used to distinguish congeners, genera and families within the orders Dentallida and Gadilida. We studied 28 species of scaphopods from Brazil, belonging to 12 genera and five families. Twelve morphometric variables were measured, and a correlation test was done to select a set of variables without correlation as input data to perform a discriminant analysis. In the analysis of congeners, the discrimination power was high in both orders. Among the genera studied, the robustness of the analysis was drastically reduced in Dentaliida, while Gadilida maintained a high percentage of correct classifications. At the family level, both orders presented high percentages of correct classification, but the imbalance of cases for each taxon masks an inconsistent result. Based on our results, the morphometric approach was a useful tool to discriminate congeneric species of both orders and to discriminate the genera of Gadilida.

The macro-detritivore gastropod Melampus coffeus plays an important role in energy transfer in neotropical mangroves and, because it consumes tree leaves, it may be a potential ecological indicator of degraded mangrove areas. The objective of this study was to analyse the spatial-temporal distribution and population dynamics parameters of M. coffeus in mangroves and correlate environmental variables with population density, shell morphology and survival. Samples were collected monthly in two mangrove forests with different salinities, located on the north-eastern coast of Brazil. Height, width and aperture height of the animals’ shell were measured. The effects of salinity on population density and size distribution in M. coffeus were evaluated in field and laboratory experiments. The results showed that populations of M. coffeus present low density and are composed of large individuals during the dry season in both mangrove forests. These populations are denser and show predominance of small individuals during the rainy season when salinity decreases. The results obtained in the experiments confirm the observations in the field. Animals at extreme sizes (small and large) subjected to different salinity treatments over a moderate period showed higher mortality rates than individuals of intermediate size.

Intertidal organisms have long been considered an ideal system to quantify how physical variations determine differential energy allocations in specimens inhabiting environmental gradients such as exposure to wave action. In habitats with differential intertidal wave exposure (sheltered, Sh; and exposed, E) seasonal gonadal and foot weight variations and their associations with exposure and food availability (algae abundance) were determined in the keyhole limpet Fissurella crassa. Gonadal weight is used as a measure of reproduction allocation whereas foot weight is an indirect indicator of energy allocation to survival. RNA:DNA ratio in limpets obtained from Sh and E habitats during the two different seasons was used as an indicator of biosynthetic capability. Our results indicate that algae abundance in E sites was higher in summer and lower in winter compared to Sh sites. In E sites the muscular foot weight of limpet was higher in summer in contrast to Sh sites where F. crassa muscular foot weight of limpet was higher in winter. Gonadal weight in Sh sites was higher in summer and remained constant in winter; whereas in E sites gonadal weight was lower in summer and higher in winter. RNA:DNA ratios indicate that regardless of intertidal wave exposure, F. crassa showed higher biosynthetic capability in summer. Energetic allocation in animals that inhabit sheltered intertidal habitats would support constant allocation towards reproduction. In contrast, animals that inhabit exposed habitats may favour seasonally reproduction allocation at expense of survival.

Many studies have shown that physical environmental factors cause phenotypic diversity in limpets. However, no studies have documented how substrate conditions (surface shape and topology) affect adhesive force and how they regulate shell morphology in limpets. The intertidal limpet Patelloida pygmaea, having a flat shell, is found exclusively on oyster shells, while P. conulus, with an extremely high shell, is found on Batillaria cumingi. The adhesive force on the B. cumingi was significantly greater in P. conulus than in P. pygmaea, whereas the force on the oyster shell showed no significant difference between these species. On the B. cumingi, a significantly positive correlation was found between adhesive force and volume in P. conulus, and no significant correlation was found in P. pygmaea. In contrast, on the oyster shell, a significant positive correlation was found between adhesive force and volume in both of the two species. These results suggest that the shell of P. conulus becomes higher with increasing own shell size by keeping aperture area relative to body size as small as possible. These morphological differences are most likely due to an adaptation to utilize different habitats and adhere to substrates with different structure and topology.

In gastropods, variation in shell morphology can be caused by the action of several biotic and abiotic factors. While much of this variation is seen in comparisons between different sites or populations, there is also substantial variation in shell morphology among individuals living side by side. We investigate the effect of trematode parasitism on both intra- as well as inter-site variation in the morphology of the New Zealand whelk Cominella glandiformis. We found that both infection by the trematode Curtuteria australis and site of origin had significant effects on several morphometric dimensions of the snail shell, with some interactions between the two factors. On its own, infection by C. australis accounted for 20 to 60% of the variance in shell morphology, depending on the dimension measured. Infected snails also had smoother shells, with less prominent ridges, than their uninfected conspecifics. Other trematode species, infecting whelks at much lower prevalence, also had impacts on shell morphology, but not necessarily in the same direction as C. australis. Overall, parasitism may be an important factor in explaining intra- and inter-site variation in snail phenotype, with potential repercussions for snail populations and their interactions with other community members.

An expanded description of a little-known arctic species Montacuta spitzbergensis from the Sea of Okhotsk with new data on its morphology, ecology and geographical distribution is given. This is the first record of M. spitzbergensis from the north-western Pacific. It differs from other species of Montacuta in its large (to 8.4 mm), elongate–ovate, thick shell with wide, slightly curved hinge plate, wide, short, and shallow resilifer, and weakly developed external ligament. This species occurs in the Arctic Ocean (Spitsbergen, Barents, Kara, Laptev and Chukchi Seas) and the Pacific Ocean (Sea of Okhotsk) at depths from 9 to 232 m at a bottom temperature from −1.62°C to +2.50°C. The hinge structure of the type species of the genera Montacuta and Tellimya is also discussed.

The taxonomic status of the cupped oysters Crassostrea angulata and C. gigas has received considerable attention in the last decades. Based on larval shell morphology, experimental hybridization, allozymes and nuclear DNA studies several authors have considered these two taxa as being synonymous. However, mitochondrial data showed clear genetic differences between the two taxa. In addition, microsatellite-based studies and cytogenetic studies have also provided evidence that supports their differentiation. Considerable differences have also been observed at the phenotypic level in terms of growth rate and ecophysiological parameters. In the present study, C. angulata from Sado estuary (Portugal) and C. gigas from Seudre estuary (France) were collected and factorial crosses were performed. Juveniles of the different progenies were reared in Ria Formosa (Portugal) under common conditions to determine if they exhibited differences in shell shape and in pigmentation of the adductor muscle scar. Significant morphometric differences between C. angulata and C. gigas progenies were indicated by univariate and multivariate analyses. Univariate analysis of size-adjusted shell measurements revealed significant differences between the two taxa for shell depth, muscle scar height, and length of ligamental area. Both reciprocal hybrids showed intermediate morphometric characters between parental lines. In addition, significant differences were also observed between C. angulata and C. gigas progenies in terms of pigmentation of adductor muscle scar. C. angulata and both reciprocal hybrid progenies showed highly pigmented adductor muscle scars whereas in C. gigas progeny the pigmentation was lighter. The differences in shell shape and muscle scar pigmentation observed in the present study support the distinction of the two taxa.

Parasitism often influences the phenotype of individuals. Many of the resulting changes are due to changes in resource allocation that come with infection. Here we examine the effect of a trematode parasite on the shape and defence morphology of a New Zealand freshwater snail, Potamopyrgus antipodarum. The trematode Microphallus sp. asexually produces hundreds of metacercarial cysts in the snail. The length, width and 2-dimensional area of each snail were measured. Snails were also assessed for their degree of spininess. Snails were dissected to determine gender, brooding condition and parasitism. Snails infected with Microphallus sp. were found to be significantly less spiny than uninfected snails. Microphallus-infected snails were also found to have a significantly greater width to length ratio at larger sizes than their uninfected counterparts. These trends could be explained in at least 3 ways. (1) Infection causes the snails to not produce spines and to become wider. (2) Spiny and narrower snails are more likely to die when they become infected. (3) Spiny and narrower snails are more resistant to infection. The changes in phenotype observed are unlikely to be adaptive for either the host or parasite and probably represent physiological by-products of the host-parasite relationship.

The predaceous crab Eriphia smithii (Xanthidae) has one larger claw with molar teeth on either the right or the left cheliped, which it uses to crush the shell of prey. Whether the handedness of crabs affected successful predation on two snail species, Nerita albicilla (Neritidae) and Planaxis sulcatus (Planaxidae) was experimentally investigated. The fate of snails of each species was analysed by multiple logistic regression with three explanatory variables: handedness, shell-size index and individuality of crabs. No effect of handedness was detected in attacks on N. albicilla, probably as a result of the spherical and more symmetrical shell morphology of this species. In contrast, right-handedness contributed to greater attack success on P. sulcatus, which has more conical shells. Further investigation of how snail shells were broken revealed that left-handed crabs had more difficulty breaking the aperture of larger P. sulcatus, which was thought to cause the difference in attack success between right- and left-handed crabs. The advantages conferred by handedness are discussed.
