We presented the first photometric and orbital period investigations for four W Ursae Majoris-type binaries: V473 And, V805 And, LQ Com, and EG CVn. The photometric solutions suggested that V805 And and LQ Com are two total-eclipse contact binaries, while V473 And and EG CVn are partial-eclipse ones. V473 And and LQ Com belong to the A-subtype contact binaries, while V805 And and EG CVn belong to the W subtype. The O’Connell effects found in the light curves of V805 And, LQ Com, and EG CVn can be interpreted as a result of a cool spot on the surface of their less massive and hotter primary components. Based on two different methods, the absolute physical parameters were properly determined. Combining the eclipse timings derived from our observations and survey’s data with those collected from literature, we investigated their orbital period variations. The results show that the orbital periods of V473 And, V805 And, and EG CVn are undergoing a secular decrease/increase superposed a periodic variation, while LQ Com exhibits a possible cyclic period variation with a small amplitude. The secular period changes are caused mainly by the mass transfer between two components, while the cyclic period oscillations may be interpreted as the results of either the light-time effect due to the third body or the cyclic magnetic activity. Finally, we made a statistical investigation for nearly 200 contact binaries with reliable physical parameters. The statistical results suggested that the W-subtype systems are more evolved than the A-subtype ones. Furthermore, the evolutionary direction of A-subtype into W-subtype systems is also discussed. The opposite evolutionary direction seems to be unlikely because it requires an increase of the total mass, the orbital angular momentum, and the temperature differences between two components of a binary system.

First multi-colour complete light curves and low-resolution spectra of short-period eclipsing binary TT Cet are presented. The stellar atmospheric parameters of the primary star were derived through spectra fitting as: $T_{eff}=7\,091\pm124\,{\text{K}}$, $\log g = 4.15\pm0.33\,{\text{cm}}/\text{s}^2$, and $[Fe/H]=-0.23\pm0.04\,\text{dex}$. The light curves were analysed using the Wilson–Devinney code. The photometric solution suggests that this target should be a near-contact binary with the primary component filling its critical Roche lobe (i.e. SD1-type NCB). The luminosity enhancement around the primary light maximum (phase 0.10–0.40) on the light curve was detected like other SD1-type NCBs, which could be caused by a hot spot near the facing surface of the secondary component due to mass transfer. Long-term decrease of the orbital period at a rate of $dP/dt=-5.01\,({\pm}0.06)\times 10^{-8}\,{{\text{d}} \cdot{yr}}^{-1}$ was detected by the O–C analysis, which supports the mass transfer from the primary to the secondary and is consistent with its primary filling configuration. No third body was found through the light curve and O–C analysis. TT Cet may locate in the broken contact stage predicted by the thermal relaxation oscillation theory (TRO) and will evolve to the contact stage eventually. It is another good observational example supporting the TRO theory. We have collected all known SD1-type NCBs with absolute parameters from the literatures. The relations of these parameters are summarised for these rare systems.

KIC 4851217 is a short period eclipsing binary (P = 2.47 days) in the field of the Kepler K1 mission. As well as variability caused by the eclipses, low-amplitude pulsations are also present in the data. A frequency analysis of the residual light-curve revealed δ Sct pulsations in the frequency range from 15–21 d−1 with amplitudes up to 3.5 mmag. Strong linear coupling (fi = fp + kforb) to orbital frequency was found, indicating tidally locked modes. From an analysis of 5 selected groups of frequencies we identified a radial mode on the secondary component, 3 dipole modes (l = |m| = 1), one of them present on the secondary component, and a quadrupole mode (l = |m| = 2), also located on the secondary component.

The study of eclipsing binaries is our primary source of measured properties of normal stars, achieved through analysis of light and radial velocity curves of eclipsing systems. The study of oscillations and pulsations is increasingly vital for determining the properties of single stars, and investigating the physical phenomena active in their interiors. Combining the two methods holds the promise of establishing stringent tests of stellar evolutionary theory, and of calibrating model-dependent asteroseismology with empirically measured stellar properties. I review recent advances and outline future work.

We present new photometric observations of two eclipsing binary systems, V1241 Tau and GQ Dra. We use the following methodology: initially, the Wilson-Devinney code is applied to the light curves in order to determine the photometric elements of the systems. Then, the residuals are analysed using Fourier techniques. The results are the following. One frequency can be possibly attributed to a real light variation of V1241 Tau, while there is no evidence of pulsations in the light curve of GQ Dra.

Asteroseismic modeling of subdwarf B (sdB) stars provides measurements of their fundamental parameters with a very good precision; in particular, the masses and radii determined from asteroseismology are found to typically reach a precision of 1% containing various uncertainties associated with their inner structure and the underlying microphysics (composition and transition zones profiles, nuclear reaction rates, etc.). Therefore, the question of the accuracy of the stellar parameters derived by asteroseismology is legitimate. We present here the seismic modeling of the pulsating sdB star in the eclipsing binary PG 1336–018, for which the mass and the radius are independently and precisely known from the modeling of the reflection/irradiation effect and the eclipses observed in the light curve. This allows us to quantitatively evaluate the reliability of the seismic method and test the impact of uncertainties in our stellar models on the derived parameters. We conclude that the sdB star parameters inferred from asteroseismology are precise, accurate, and robust against model uncertainties.

In this study, 23 Algol-type binary systems, which were selected as candidate binaries with pulsating components, were observed at the Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University Observatory. One of these systems was BG Peg. Its hotter component shows δ Scuti-type light variations. Physical parameters of BG Peg were derived from modelling the V light curve using the Wilson-Devinney code. The frequency analysis shows that the pulsational component of the BG Peg system pulsates in two modes with periods of 0.039 and 0.047 d. Mode identification indicates that both modes are most likely non-radial l = 2 modes.

We present frequency analysis of the Kepler light curve of KIC 10486425, an eclipsing binary system with a pulsating component. The parameters of the binary were obtained by modelling the light curve with the Wilson-Devinney program. The residuals from this modelling were subject to Fourier analysis which allowed us to detect 120 periodic terms characteristic for γ Dor-type pulsations. The dominant frequency of these changes amounts to 1.3189 d−1.

The study of variable phenomena (periodic, irregular or transient) provides a unique way to acquire knowledge about objects in our Universe. Currently, we are going through a rapid expansion of time-domain astrophysics. One reason for this expansion is the technological developments materialised in small to medium size observational projects such as HAT, OGLE, Catalina, PTF and upcoming very large projects such as Gaia or LSST.

In this article, we are focusing on the ESA cornerstone mission Gaia. This spacecraft will provide astrometric, photometric and spectroscopic measurements for one billion stars. Among the existing and planned multi-epoch projects Gaia is unique because it will provide exquisite astrometric measurements for all objects it observes. We provide a brief overview of the literature concerning this mission and its expected contribution to variability studies.

We used an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) to derive the orbital parameters of spectroscopic binary stars. Using measured radial velocity data of seven double-lined spectroscopic binary systems V373 Cas, V2388 Oph, V401 Cyg, GM Dra, V523 Cas, AB And and HD 141929, we found corresponding orbital and spectroscopic elements. Our numerical results are in good agreement with those obtained by others using more traditional methods.

The short-period (0d.34) close binary V508 Oph was observed in 2005 and four new times of minima were derived. All of the available times of minima, including the new ones, covering 69 years were analyzed. It was shown that the period change of the system is very complex. Two possible period oscillations with periods of 24.73 and 9.91 years and amplitudes of about 0.011 and 0.002 day, respectively, were found to superimpose on upward parabolic change, indicating a secular period increase at a rate of dp/dt = 4.24 × 10−9 days yr−1. The mechanisms that could explain the period changes of the system are discussed.

Orbital-period variations of the neglected W UMa-type binary star, NY Lyr, were analyzed based on two newly determined eclipse times together with the others compiled from the literature. A cyclic oscillation with a period of 82.1 yr and an amplitude of 0.0247 d was discovered to be superimposed on a continuous period increase (dP/dt = +1.33 × 10−7 d yr−1). After the long-term period increase and the large-amplitude cyclic oscillation were removed from the O–C diagram, the residuals suggest that there is another small-amplitude period oscillation (A4 = 0.0053 d, P4 = 19.4 years) in the orbital period changes. As in the cases of AH Cnc and AD Cnc, both the continuous period increase and the two cyclic period oscillations make NY Lyr an interesting system to study in the future. In order to understand the evolutionary state of the binary system, new photometric and spectroscopic observations and a careful investigation on those data are needed.

This paper presents the first comprehensive study of the EP And system, a contact binary. In this work the solution of the standard V light curve was obtained using the phoebe program (version 0.3c). Absolute parameters of the stellar components were then determined, enabling us to discuss the structure and evolutionary status of the close binary EP And. The times of minima data (‘O–C curve’) were analyzed. It was found that a third body with a period of 41.20 yr and mass 0.15 M⊙ is orbiting around the system. Also a modulating period of an 11.72-yr cycle along with a relative period increase of = 1.79 × 10−7 were obtained, which were attributed to the magnetic activity cycle and mass transfer with rate = 9.98 × 10−8 yr−1 between the components, respectively.

SuperWASP is the world's leading ground-based survey for transiting exoplanets. Its database now contains over 300 billion data points covering 30 million unique objects from 10 million images obtained over 1700 nights since 2004. In addition to having discovered 70 transiting exoplanets, SuperWASP enables long-baseline, high-cadence studies of variable stars to be performed. We summarise some of the studies already carried out, and look ahead to the prospects for studying periodic variables with varying periods. The science which is thus supported will include studies of the Blazhko effect in RR Lyræ stars, migrating starspots in rotational variables, third bodies in eclipsing binaries, and coalescing binary stars.

Astrotomography refers to a suite of indirect imaging techniques that achieve micro-arcsecond angular resolution by measuring projections obtained from time-resolved spectroscopic observations. The projections arise from Doppler shifts, eclipses or time delays, combined with rotation of the star or binary system being imaged. At our workshop we reviewed and discussed state-of-the-art methods for imaging the surfaces and magnetic fields of rapidly rotating stars, the accretion flows in compact binary star systems and the broad emission-line regions in active galactic nuclei.

This paper presents the results of verification of known stars showing evidence of orbital eccentricity and apsidal motion.

High resolution spectral observations of ϵ Aur were carried out in the near-IR spectral range. Observations were obtained with the Coudé-spectrograph of the 2m RCC telescope at National Astronomical Observatory Rozhen and cover all main phases of the current eclipse. Results revealed for the first time absorption components in O I and Ca II triplets and variations of N I lines. Estimation of the electron density was done using lines from the Paschen series of hydrogen.

This paper presents the results of the analysis of (O-C) diagrams of four eclipsing variables. The diagrams are based on times of minima collected in the Cracow database, which contains times of minima found in the literature, from observations at Mt. Suhora and Ulupinar Observatories, or determined using publicly-available photometric surveys (NSVS, ASAS etc).

We introduce a new computer program that is able to determine the flux ratio between the components of SB2 stars from time series of composite spectra. The spectra of the components are decomposed using the KOREL program and compared to synthetic spectra computed on a grid of fundamental stellar parameters. In the result, we obtain the optimized stellar parameters together with the flux ratio. The program is tested and applied to the oscillating eclipsing binary KIC 10661783 observed by the Kepler satellite mission.

The preliminary results of a study of a neglected, relatively bright, short-periodic (P=0.48 d), near contact eclipsing binary BS Vulpeculae is given. We present our new complete (BVRI) light curves, and physical parameters of the system based on them, derived by the 2003 version of the Wilson–Van Hamme code.
