Substance-free phonology or SFP (Reiss 2017) has renewed interest in the question of abstraction in phonology. Perhaps the most common form of abstraction through the absence of substance is underspecification, where some aspects of speech lack representation in memorized representations, within the phonology or in the phonetic implementation (Archangeli 1988, Keating 1988, Lahiri and Reetz 2010 among many others). The fundamental basis for phonology is argued to be a mental model of speech events in time, following Raimy (2000) and Papillon (2020). Each event can have properties (one-place predicates that are true of the event), which include the usual phonological features, and also structural entities for extended events like moras and syllables. Features can be bound together in an event, yielding segment-like properties. Pairs of events can be ordered in time by the temporal logic precedence relation represented by ‘<’. Events, features and precedence form a directed multigraph structure with edges in the graph interpreted as “maybe next”. Some infant bimodal speech perception results are examined using this framework, arguing for underspecification in time in the developing phonological representations.

A pronominal analysis of tense goes back to Partee (1973), motivated by a series of proposed parallels between the interpretation of tenses and that of pronouns. This article revisits Partee's interpretive parallels, as well as two more identified in Kratzer (1998), in light of subsequent developments in work on both temporal relations and on pronouns. The goal of this article is not to argue for or against a pronominal analysis of tense, but instead to make clearer the syntactic and semantic space within which such an analysis is situated, especially given that pronouns have been given increasingly complex syntactic representations even as tense has remained syntactically simplex.

Dans cette note, nous montrons que l'argument de Physique VIII, 1, 251b23-28 implique aussi la nécessité du mouvement éternel de sensu diviso.

La question du Temps a toujours fait partie du travail en thérapie de relaxation et l’actualité peut nous amener à penser et pratiquer notre clinique dans cette urgence. Aujourd’hui, le milieu médical est dans cette quête du Temps. Par des demandes de plus en plus pressantes, des enjeux de plus en plus exigeants en rapidité d’efficacité, l’hôpital n’est pas épargné par ces questions, ni les patients ni les soignants qui y passent du temps. Les cliniciens de la pratique à médiation corporelle dont je fais partie doivent s’inscrire dans ces enjeux de société. Le lien constant entre le Corps et le Psychisme dans la pratique de la Relaxation est une force pour s’inscrire dans l’Urgence. Le principe de Temps ne peut être séparé du principe d’Espace et c’est finalement dans le Corps que ces notions se réunissent. À l’hôpital, le médecin est pressé que le patient « guérisse », le patient est pressé de sortir et nous, relaxateurs, nous cherchons d’abord la relation pour la relaxation. Comme le définissait J.-H. Schultz, c’est dans ce « nous thérapeutique » que se joue la rencontre. C’est alors la demande qui vient tout d’abord orienter l’effet de la relaxation. Un patient (sur)demandeur risque d’entraîner un effet trop magique. Nous semblons entendre sa plainte car aucun clivage ne se fait sentir entre le Corps et l’Esprit, il sent qu’il peut souffler mais cela restera superficiel s’il ne souhaite pas travailler en profondeur sur lui. Un médecin (sur)demandeur risque d’amener l’opposition du patient. Son corps est présent mais pas son psychisme ou seulement le caractère rebelle et rien ne peut prendre sens. Mais s’il y a un feeling.. tant dans la proposition du médecin qui pense à l’approche en relaxation, que dans votre instinct à l’écoute de son histoire et dans le temps que le patient s’offre pour se laisser surprendre… c’est là que cette pratique en Rela(xa)tion va prendre tout son sens et va s’inscrire d’emblée comme une réponse à cette demande urgente d’aller mieux ! Au travers de ces 3 possibilités, ces 3 profils, nous allons réfléchir à ce qui se joue dans les premières séances de relaxation. Où se situe l’engagement du patient dans son Corps et la façon dont les changements peuvent s’opérer ? Fort heureusement, le Corps est surprenant… et même après certains débuts qui peuvent paraître perdus d’avance, les surprises de la Relaxation ne cessent de faire évoluer l’Urgence de la demande à l’hôpital.

All perdurantists claim that objects persist by having different temporal parts at different moments of their existence. Nevertheless, while most of them argue that temporal parts are individuated by their temporal boundaries, a minority claim that they are individuated by a principle of unity. After a critical review of these two options, I will argue in favour of a new version of the second one, by showing that it provides a better defence of perdurantism against other conceptions of persistence.

This study investigates temporal and control interpretations with verbs of risk followed by non-finite complements in English. It addresses two questions: Why does the gerund-participle show variation in the temporal relation between the event it denotes and that of the main verb whereas the to-infinitive manifests a constant temporal relation? Why does the gerund-participle construction allow variation in control while the to-infinitive shows constant subject control readings? The study is based on a corpus of 1345 attested uses. The explanation is framed in a natural-language semantics involving the meanings of the gerund-participle, the infinitive, the preposition to, and the meaning-relation between the matrix and its complement. Temporal and control interpretations are shown to arise as implications grounded in the semantic content of what is linguistically expressed. It is argued that the capacity of a natural-language semantic approach to account for the data obviates the need to have recourse to purely syntactic operations to account for control.

Time is a phenomenon that is often taken for granted. In gerontology, time is often equated with chronological or linear time, which thereby causes time to be defined as chronological age. With this paper, my purpose is to illuminate further understandings of time and how the passage of time is experienced in old age, particularly in the context of a move to a long-term care institution. Towards that end, I describe a case study of a gentleman coming to live in a long-term care facility. In this case study, time was perceived as an element outside day-to-day experience that structured daily life. Specific dimensions of temporality are evident, including biographical time, embodied time, and embedded time (including institutional time). These dimensions of time provide further understanding of the experiences of age and institutionalization.

Narrative approaches in the field of aging are receiving increasing attention by theorists and practitioners alike. This article draws on recent thinking in narrative gerontology to look at three aspects of aging on which a narrative perspective can shed further light. In relation to the temporal aspects, the notion of storytime is examined. Concerning its poetical aspects, the article considers the stages, styles, genres, contexts, and selves of self-storying. Under spiritual aspects, the topics of meaning and identity are explored. A discussion of these aspects may be seen to converge on the theme of wisdom and the possibility of wisdom environments.
