Introduction. Celtis australis L., Crataegus azarolus L., Crataegus monogyna Jacq., Elaeagnus angustifolia L. et Zizyphus lotus L. sont des arbres et arbustes fruitiers non conventionnels, très communs en Afrique et surtout en Algérie. Leurs fruits traditionnellement exploités sont sources de minéraux et vitamines qui pourraient constituer une matière première non négligeable pour l’alimentation. Ils sont consommés frais ou secs. L'objectif de notre travail a été de déterminer la composition minérale et vitaminique de ces fruits. Matériel et méthodes. Notre étude a porté sur une comparaison de ces fruits quant à leurs caractéristiques biométriques et à la teneur de leur portion comestible en composés vitaminiques et éléments minéraux. Résultats et discussion. La pulpe des cinq fruits étudiés s’est révélée plus riche en vitamines (tocophérol, carotène, vitamine C, thiamine B1) et en minéraux (calcium, magnésium, potassium, fer, manganèse ) que certains fruits plus largement consommés. La teneur de quelques oligo-éléments (zinc, cuivre) n’a pas dépassé le seuil de toxicité, indiquant que la consommation de ces fruits n’était pas préjudiciable à la santé publique. Conclusion. Les fruits analysés pourraient être source d’un apport nutritionnel important et être utilisés dans différents domaines : agroalimentaire, cosmétique, pharmaceutique et autres.

Introduction. En France, Cacopsylla pyri est un ravageur redouté en vergers de poiriers. La lutte contre cet insecte repose d'une part sur les traitements post-hivernaux sur adultes et œufs, d'autre part sur les traitements printaniers sur jeunes larves. Le retrait du commerce des colorants nitrés et la résistance de C. pyri aux pyréthrinoïdes utilisées contre les adultes en fin d'hiver rendent la lutte post-hivernale plus difficile, entraînant la présence au printemps de populations larvaires importantes avec parfois des échecs dans la lutte. Dans cette étude, nous avons testé l'efficacité, sur les différents stades de développement du psylle, de plusieurs insecticides utilisés seuls ou en association avec des huiles de pétrole. Matériel et méthode. Différentes populations de psylle prélevées à plusieurs dates dans différentes localités du sud-est français ont été traitées en laboratoire après migration des larves sur de jeunes plants de poiriers. Des pulvérisations d'insecticides ont été appliquées sur les différents stades larvaires L1-L2, L3-L4, L5 et œufs, alors que le stade adulte a été traité par application topique et test tarsal, notamment avec des pyréthrinoïdes, de l'abamectin, de l'amitraze et des huiles de pétrole. Résultats. L'efficacité de l'abamectin et de l'amitraze a été maximale sur les stades L1 à L4, et elle a baissé faiblement sur les larves du stade L5. Les DL50 de ces deux insecticides ont varié selon les localités et les dates de prélèvements. Quel que soit le stade de développement du psylle, les pyréthrinoïdes n'ont eu qu'une faible efficacité. Les tests avec les huiles ont fait apparaître une efficacité sur adultes par contact tarsal qui, ajoutée à leur efficacité sur jeunes larves, décrite par ailleurs, montrent l'intérêt de leur introduction dans les programmes de lutte contre C. pyri.

Exposure of fouth instars of Spilarctia obliqua Walker (Lepidoptera: Arctiidae) to excelsin over a 24 h period resulted in reduced feeding and growth rates. To distinguish between antifeedant and toxic effects, growth efficiency, calculated as the slope of the regression of the relative growth rate on relative consumption rate, was compared with results from antifeedant simulation and contact toxicity bioassays. From the results, it is concluded that excelsin exerts its toxic effects at the physiological level.

In Morocco, poisoning events of fish, aquatic birds and livestock have been observed in some reservoirs and shallow lakes. In all cases, the reasons for animal mortality reasons have not been confirmed and the toxic cyanobacteria strains that were abundant in these water bodies have been suggested as their cause. Since 1994, the authors started taxonomic, ecological and toxicological studies by collecting samples from various lakes reservoirs and ponds. The results show that more than 18 out of 26 lakes reservoirs used for human water supply contained at least one species of planktonic cyanobacteria, where the genus Microcystis was dominant (Microcystis aeruginosa f. aeruginosa, M. aeruginosa f. flos-aquae, M. ichthyoblabe, M. pulverea f.delicatissima) and was associated with Oscillatoria, Planktothrix, Anabaena, Aphanizomenon, Phormidium and other genera. Taxonomic studies shows that among more than 150 cyanobacteria taxa identified in Moroccan freshwater ecosystems, 35 are potentially toxic. For several species, the toxicity of both natural blooms and isolated strains lyophilized material was confirmed by mouse bioassay and the microcystins content evaluated by the Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). A map of geographicdistribution of Microcystis strains inventoried in moroccan water bodies is presented.

l-menthol isolated from the essential oil of Mentha arvensis and seven of its acyl derivatives were tested for contact and vapour toxicity, and ovicidal and repellent activity against the storage pests Callosobruchus maculatus F., Rhyzopertha dominica F., Sitophilus oryzae L. and Tribolium castaneum Herbst. Menthyl propionate and l-menthol were highly toxic in contact assays and vapour toxicity assays respectively. l-menthol was also found to be strongly repellent (82–100% at 0.353 μg/cm2 dose) against all the insects, while menthyl acetate was highly ovicidal against T. castaneum.

L'effet de la salinité (0,3 - 0,45 et 2,45 g.L-1) et de la dureté (250 - 500 g.L-1 (CaCO3) sur la toxicité de Al, Cu, Cr, Cd, Ni, Zn vis-à-vis de Daphnia magna est étudiée en laboratoire. Les concentrations en ions métalliques varient entre 0,01 et 25 mg.L-1. Les résultats obtenus à 20°C montrent que la toxicité mesurée en CI50 24 h et CI50 48 h (CI = Concentration d'Inhibition) de Cd, Cu, Zn et Al augmente avec un accroissement de la salinité ou de la dureté. Par contre, la toxicité de Ni et Cr est atténuée malgré l'accroissement de la salinité du milieu. L'augmentation de la dureté entraîne une réduction de la toxicité du chrome.

1,8-cineole, one of the components of the essential oil of Artemisia annwa, was evaluated for repellency and toxicity against three stored product coleopterans—Callosobruchiis maculatus F. (Coleoptera: Bruchidae), Rhyzopertha dominica F. (Coleoptera: Bostrychidae) and Sitopliilus oryzae L. (Coleoptera: Curculionidae). It was found to be moderately repellent to all three species, with a mean repellency in the range of 65–74% at the highest dose tested (4.0 μl/ml) within 1h. A contact toxicity assay revealed that direct topical application was more effective than using impregnated filter paper. The compound was more effective as a fumigant and gave 93–100% mortality against all the three pest species at the dose of 1.0 μl/l air under empty jar conditions as compared to treatment of jars filled with grain (11–26% mortality). The lethal dose and lethal concentration required to kill 50% of the beetles (LD50 and LC50) respectively varied.with the toxicity assay method. LD50 values of 0.03, 0.04 and 0.04 μl/insect against C. maculatus, R. dominica and S. oryzae respectively were found in the topical application assay while the LC50 in the fumigant assay was 0.28, 0.33 and 0.46 μl/l against C. maculatus, R. dominica and S. oryzae respectively.

Résumé: —L'un des composés de l'huile essentielle d'Artemisia annua, le 1,8-cineole, a été évalué pour sa répulsion et sa toxicité vis à vis de trois coléoptères des denrées stockées, Callosobrnchus maculatus F. (Coleoptera: Bruchidae), Rhyzoperta dominica F. (Coleoptera: Bostrychidae) et Sitopliilus orizae L. (Coleoptera: Curculionidae). Il s'est avéré être modérément répulsif pour les 3 espèces, avec une répulsion moyenne de 65–74% à la plus forte dose testée (4.0 ml/ml) pendant 1 heure. Un essai de toxicité de contact indique qu'une application locale directe est plus efficace que l'utilisation d'un papier filtre imprégné. Le composé est plus efficace en fumigation et provoque 93–100% de mortalité chez les trois espèces de ravageurs à la dose de 1.0 ml/l d'air dans un pot vide par rapport à un pot rempli de grains (11–26% de mortalité). La dose létale et la concentration létale requises pour tuer 50% des scarabées (LD50 et LC50 respectivement) varient avec le type d'essai de toxicité. Des valeurs de LD50 de 0.03, 0.04 et 0.04 ml/insecte pour C. maculatus, R. dominica et S. oryzae respectivement ont été trouvées dans l'essai avec une application locale alors que la LC50 dans l'essai de fumigation était respectivement de 0.28, 0.33 et 0.46ml/l pour C. maculatus, R. dominica et S. oryzae.

Les effets de trois métaux lourds (Cu, Hg, Cd) sur le développement d'Anopheles hispaniola, vecteur potentiel du paludisme, de Culex pipiens et Culex hortensis ont été étudiés dans l'oued N'fis près de la station Agadir Tachraft, dans les bassins expérimentaux de traitement des eaux usées de Marrakech (Maroc) et dans un bassin d'élevage des grenouilles. Les effets varient selon l'espèce, en fonction du développement et selon la nature et la dose du métal. A. hispaniola au stade L4 se montre le plus sensible aux trois métaux Cu, Hg, Cd. La CL50 (24h) est respectivement de 3,78, 1,52 et 4,81 mg.L-1, plus faible que celle de C. hortensis (5,02 , 3,1 et 9,91 mg.L-1) et de C. pipiens (5,91, 4,43 et 17,48 mg.L-1). Par contre, la sensibilité au Cd ne diffère pas significativement chez A. hispaniola et C. hortensis au stade L2 selon le test de Newman - Keuls. Cette étude montre qu'A. hispaniola qui a un cycle de vie relativement court et qui est facile à élever au laboratoire, présente une sensibilité 2 fois plus élevée pour le Hg, 3,4 fois plus élevée pour le Cd et 8,6 fois plus importante pour le Cu que Aedes aegypti. Cette dernière est proposée comme espèce-test pour les mêmes propriétés pour étudier les effets biologiques des métaux lourds sur les insectes aquatiques.

E. variatus est une espèce de petite taille facile à élever au laboratoire ; elle peut se reproduire par voie asexuée (fragmentation). L'influence de certains sels de métaux lourds sur la mortalité, le taux de fragmentation et la croissance des populations ont été étudiés afin d'établir les possibilités d'utilisation de cette espèce amphibie pour tester la toxicité des sédiments aquatiques. Les sels de Cd, Cu et Zn provoquent une mortalité proportionnelle à leur concentration. Le zinc est le métal le plus nocif ; le plomb n'entraîne pas de mortalité significative à court terme (72 heures). Les sels de métaux utilisés modifient de façon variable le taux de fragmentation et de croissance des populations. La fragmentation complique l'interprétation des résultats des tests auxquels cette espèce est soumise. De ce fait, E. variatus ne semble pas être un bon candidat comme organisme test, comme le sont d'autres espèces du même genre.

With the aim of establishing cryopreservation protocols for oyster (Crassostrea gigas) embryos, toxicity of single or combined cryoprotectants to oyster embryos was investigated. In experiments on the toxicity tolerance of oyster embryos, four conventional cryoprotectants, namely, acetamide (A), dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), ethylene glycol (EG) and propylene glycol (PG), with concentrations from 1 to 5 M were used to test the toxicity tolerance of oyster embryos at eight different developemental stages. On a molar-equivalent basis, DMSO appeared to be less toxic to PG, EG and acetamide in general. Oyster embryos were tolerant to low concentrations of all cryoprotectants tested in the range from 1 M to 2 M for all developmental stages. Early stage embryos were more vulnerable to high concentration (4 M and 5 M) cryoprotectants tested than late stage embryos. Experiments were subsequently performed to study the combined effects of DMSO and acetamide adding trehalose or glucose in reducing toxicity to 4 hour oyster embryos. The use of trehalose or glucose reduced toxicity of high cryoprotectant concentrations. Survival was higher when DMSO was combined with acetamide than when using DMSO or acetamide alone at high concentration (5 M). By adding trehalose to combined 5 M DMSO and acetamide (total concentration) an average survival rate of 67 ± 7% was obtained in contrast to 8 ± 5% or 2 ± 1% survival when testing with 5 M DMSO or 5 M acetamide, respectively.

The toxicity of sewage sludge to adult and larval Sand shrimp, Crangon crangon, and larval brine shrimp Artemia salina, was studied. Temporal changes in toxicity, ammonia and pH of sewage sludge in seawater were determined. The feasibility of sediment choice bioassays using adult Crangon were examined. The 24 h LC50 of sewage sludge at 20 °C was 0.4% sludge for Crangon larvae, and 10.0% for Artemia larvae. Toxicity to Crangon larvae decreased with decreasing ammonia and increasing pH as sludge decayed over 7 days. In adult Crangon, a dose response with greater variation at < 3% sewage sludge (wet volume in seawater) was found. For adult Crangon at 10 °C, the LT50 at 1% sludge was 80-90 h and 96 h LC50 0.8-1.7% sludge. No clear differences were apparent between 96 h LC5O's in static and 24 h renewal tests. Adult Crangon avoided sediments mixed to concentrations of 6.25% and 10% sewage sludge, but buried at similar frequencies in uncontaminated and 1.57% sludge sediments. In addition to possible chemical effects from ammonia and other sewage sludge components (e.g. metals, organochlorines, hydrocarbons), sludge solids may have physical effects on Crustacea. Bioaccumulation is possible if persistent contaminants occur in the sludge. From estimated field concentrations of sewage sludge, and the results of this and other toxicity studies, lethal effects at sewage sludge disposal sites are believed unlikely. However, further sediment studies (longer-term, life-cycle, bioaccumulation, and mesocosm) are required to evaluate the role of sediment tests in understanding the effects of sewage sludge on benthic Crustacea.

The toxic and repellency effects of four plants Chenopodium procerum, Ocimum canum sinus, Tetradentia riparia and Capsicum frutescens were tested on Acanthoscelides obtectus Say and Zabrotes subfasciatus Boheman. The toxic effect was found on leaves of Ocimum canum sinus and Chenopodium procerum Hochst. The four plants tested did not show any repellency effect on the bruchids.

A range of materials were collected from a number of ecological and environmental zones within Kenya as being likely sources of entomopathogenic bacteria. These were soils, insect frass and dead insect material. Using an isolation protocol involving use of a selective medium, over 150 Bacillus thuringiensis (B. t.) strains were recovered from the sample material. Their identity as B. t. strains was confirmed by their growth characteristics, morphology and presence of a parasporal delta-endotoxin crystal.

All strains were screened for activity against two Lepidopteran pest species, the spotted stem borer, Chilo partellus and the African army worm, Spodoptera exempta. Isolates causing over 80% mortality in the screening assays were retained for further evaluation. The selected isolates were subjected to bioassay against C. partellus and S. littoralis. Following bioassay, the most toxic isolates were selected for screenhouse trials against C. partellus and field trials against a natural outbreak of S. exempta.

In the screenhouse trials all of the B. t. treated plants showed reduced levels of damage and yields were 5 to 7 times higher than the yield obtained from the untreated, infested control plots. Three isolates, A-3, A-C-2 (isolated from insect material) and M-44–2 (isolated from soil) seemed to offer superior levels of protection. Two new B. t. isolates, K-26–21 and MF-4B-2, both isolated from soils, showed high levels of toxicity to S. littoralis and S. exempta in the laboratory. When isolate K-26–21 was applied to maize seedlings in the field, almost total control of the larval population was achieved within 48 hr at each of the concentration levels tested.

The susceptibility of head lice, Pediculus humanus capitis collected from children in Israel and that ofa laboratory colony of body lice, Pediculus humanus humanus to the insecticides malathion, deltamethrin, permethrin, fenitrothion and dieldrin has been evaluated using standard WHO papers. The LT50 and LT95 were established using different exposure times. Deltamethrin had the highest“knock-down”effect, followed by permethrinand malathion. All insecticidesexcept dieldrin gave higher mortality for body lice than for head lice. No differences in the susceptibility between adult and nymph lice could be observed.
