  • Samuel Richardson (1689–1761), the English writer and printer best known for his epistolary novels, including Pamela (1740) and Clarissa (1748), had preserved copies of his extensive correspondence with a view to its eventual publication, and these volumes, edited by Anna Laetitia Barbauld and first published in 1804, contain her selection from his papers. Richardson became a printer's apprentice in 1706 and for the rest of his life managed a successful printing business in addition to writing his highly popular and influential novels. After the success of Pamela, Richardson regularly corresponded with leading contemporary literary figures including Henry Fielding and Samuel Johnson. The letters provide fascinating insights into Richardson's life and literary and social activities. Volume 6 is devoted entirely to his lively correspondence with Lady Bradshaigh, discussing literature but also the writers' respective domestic affairs, and contemporary social concerns including the education of women and the behaviour of men.

  • This book, published in 1895 for the centenary of the celebrated Romantic poet John Keats (1795–1821), was edited by Harry Buxton Forman (1842–1917). Forman was a Post Office administrator and a keen literary scholar, who had earlier produced important editions of Shelley and Keats. He has since become notorious for his involvement in making fake literary 'discoveries'. This centenary collection of 214 'racy, lively, inimitably good-tempered' letters by Keats aimed for completeness and contained several previously unpublished communications to addressees such as the Jeffrey family. It includes letters from Keats to his brother George (1797–1841), who lived in America, and to his fiancée Fanny Brawne (1800–65). Forman's edition of the Brawne letters had aroused controversy when it appeared in 1878, as being too personal for publication. However, Forman included them in the 1895 collection to help the reader 'complete the picture of the true Keats'.

  • Jonathan Swift (1667–1745) was born in Dublin and studied at the city's Trinity College. He gained his B.A. in 1686 before going to England where he took a Master's degree at Oxford in 1692. Subsequently, Swift lived between England and Ireland for a number of years. He moved permanently from England in 1714 after the Tory party he supported lost power. Back in Ireland as Dean of St Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin, he turned his talents to supporting Irish causes. During this period he wrote some of his best work, including Gulliver's Travels, the satirical masterpiece which has been continuously in print since its publication in 1726. Written by Sir Walter Scott, this is the first part of a two-volume biography of Swift, first published in 1826. This volume covers his early life up to his appointment as Dean of St Patrick's and his involvement in Irish politics.

  • Charles Kingsley (1819–75) is best remembered today as the author of the children's morality tale The Water Babies. This biography, written by his wife and published in 1877, draws on his letters to describe a man who saw his faith as being central to his life not only as an Anglican priest, but also as a historian, novelist and supporter of social reform. The two-volume work gives insights into the concerns and preoccupations of the intellectual classes of the mid-Victorian period. In Volume 2, Fanny Kingsley gives passionate support to her husband in the notorious controversy with J. H. Newman, provoked by an article in Macmillan's Magazine. Also included is an account of a tour of France, and letters in support of women's suffrage. In summing up his life, his wife writes, 'Many of his dreams - social, sanitary, and others - improbable as they seemed at the time, have been realised …'.

  • The Victorian intellectual Mark Pattison (1813–84) published Isaac Casaubon in 1875, while rector of Lincoln College, Oxford. Casaubon (1559–1614), a French Protestant and distinguished Renaissance scholar, was the author of critical texts and commentaries on a vast corpus of classical authors, including Diogenes Laertius, Theocritus, Aristotle and Strabo. His magnum opus was his text and commentary on Athenaeus' Deipnosophistae. Pattison's account is based on letters, diaries, unpublished lecture notes and students' notes, published works, city archives, and university documents. The work covers Casaubon's youth, education, scholarly career, and final years spent in England (1610–14), where he influenced the rising 'Anglican school'. In his image of Casaubon, Pattison paints the picture of the ideal scholar, and through his portrayal reveals his deeply Victorian convictions and sensibilities. The work is an invaluable source for the life of the Renaissance scholar and the ideas and perspectives of the Victorian man.

  • John O'Keeffe (1747–1833) was an Irish playwright who began his career as an actor in 1764. His first significant success as a writer was the play The Son-in-Law in 1779, and he was later called 'our English Molière' by essayist William Hazlitt. He moved to London in 1781 - around the same time that his marriage broke down - and wrote a string of successful comic operas and dramatic works, including Wild Oats (1791). However, he suffered from failing eyesight and was nearly blind at the height of his fame. He dictated this memoir, published in two volumes in 1826, to his daughter, Adelaide (1776–1865). In Volume 1, O'Keeffe recounts his childhood in Ireland, his first trip to London in 1762, where he saw the legendary actor and theatre producer David Garrick (1717–79) on stage, and the beginning of his own dramatic career upon returning to Dublin.

  • A few years after Esther Alice Chadwick (fl. 1882–1928) - who wrote under the name Mrs Ellis H. Chadwick - had read a copy of Elizabeth Gaskell's Life of Charlotte Brontë, she moved to a house near the Haworth vicarage where the Brontë family had lived. As a result, Chadwick was able to speak to many people who had known the family, and in 1914 she published this extensive biography of the family. Beginning with the Irish ancestry of the three famous sisters, Charlotte (1816–55), Emily (1818–48) and Anne (1820–49), she traces their short but eventful lives. Chadwick examines their early years and the influence of their father, Patrick, his work in the ministry and the family's time at Haworth. Later chapters are devoted to the sisters' education and their literary output, seeking to understand their extraordinary creativity amid the difficult circumstances of their life.

We read Kingsley's precocious sermon written at the age of four, and his first attempts at poetry. As an adult he was keenly aware of the inequalities of Victorian life, and his support for the Chartists and social reform can be traced back to his witnessing the 1831 Bristol Riots, his vivid description of which is included here.

  • Helena Faucit Martin, one of the leading stage actresses of the early nineteenth century, played several Shakespearean roles. When she began expressing her opinions on her favourite women characters in letters to her friends, they urged her to publish them. The result is a series of fascinating, candid and informed sketches of seven of Shakespeare's well-known female characters, featuring Ophelia, Juliet, Portia, Imogen, Desdemona, Rosalind and Beatrice, which was published in 1885. Faucit's writings are distinctive, in that she approaches her subjects not as a critic of drama, but as someone who has 'thought their thoughts and spoken their words'. She treats Shakespeare's characters as beings with a life outside the stage, as figures for herself and other women to look up to as guides, friends and mirrors for their own lives. Among the letters in the volume are those written to Faucit's eminent friends, Robert Browning and John Ruskin.

  • Hester Chapone (1727–1801) was a British writer and advocate of women's education who is best known as the author of one of the most popular conduct books for women in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Self-educated in French, Latin and Greek, Chapone published much of her work after the death of her husband in 1761. Her firm belief in the right of women to lead emotionally and intellectually fulfilled lives was much praised by contemporary feminists. These volumes, first published posthumously in 1807 contain a biography and a series of unpublished letters from Chapone to her friends. Her letters to her friend Samuel Richardson concerning the right of women in marriage and women's education illustrate her strong views concerning these subjects, with this volume's other letters and her biography providing further valuable insights into her character. Volume 2 contains her letters to Richardson.

  • Thomas Carlyle (1795–1881) was one of the most influential authors of the nineteenth century. His satirical essays and perceptive historical biographies caused him to be regarded for much of the Victorian period as a literary genius and eminent social philosopher. These volumes, first published in 1882, form the first part of Carlyle's official biography, describing his early life and literary work in Scotland. Carlyle's early career was spent as a teacher and part-time writer before his move to London in 1834. Written by Carlyle's close friend James Anthony Froude (1818–1894), this candid and controversial biography describes in vivid detail Carlyle's early literary influences and the sense of isolation he felt during his frustrating years as a schoolmaster. This revealing work broke traditional Victorian biographical conventions, and is considered a classic for its critical analysis of Carlyle's actions and character. Volume 1 covers the years 1795–1827.

  • The biographer and novelist E. J. Trelawny (1792–1881) published Recollections in 1858. It is a memoir of the time Trelawny spent in the Mediterranean with the Romantic poets Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792–1822) and Lord Byron (1788–1824) from 1822 until the early deaths of both poets. Trelawny's vivid and personal account quickly became popular, comfortably out-selling other biographies, and was republished in 1878 under the title Records of Shelley, Byron and the Author. The work, based on Trelawny's notes and correspondence, describes their expatriate lifestyle in Italy, Shelley's sudden tragic death at sea, Byron's support for the Greek War of Independence, and his death. It is an indispensable source about the final months of Shelley and Byron's intense and unconventional lives, providing eye-witness details and intimate knowledge of two of England's greatest Romantic poets.

  • In paying tribute to the English poet Charles Algernon Swinburne (1837–1909), his friend and biographer Edmund Gosse (1849–1928) said 'his character was no less strange than his physique … he was violent, arrogant, even vindictive, and yet no one could be more affectionate, more courteous, more loyal'. Swinburne and Gosse moved in the same literary set and also in the Pre-Raphaelite circle of artists: Swinburne was especially attached to D. G. Rossetti's wife, Elizabeth Siddal. In his time, Swinburne became notorious for many of his works, including the controversial volume Poems and Ballads, published in 1866, but was also a novelist, playwright and literary critic. Gosse published this brief biography of his friend in 1912, and it gives a sketch of Swinburne's formative years at Eton and Oxford, his rich literary life, and his final years, which were complicated by poor health. Gosse later edited posthumous collections of Swinburne's works.

  • Dr Samuel Johnson (1709–84) is regarded as one of the outstanding figures of English literature, as a poet, essayist, moralist, critic, biographer, editor and lexicographer. This collected edition of his works - commissioned by the publisher within hours of Johnson's death, such was his celebrity - was published in 1787 in eleven volumes, edited by his literary executor, the musicologist Sir John Hawkins. Volume 4 contains the third part of his Lives of the Poets, his last major work. This was a commission to provide short accounts of over fifty poets of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and set a new standard for English literary biography. Although not all of the subjects have been regarded as eminent by posterity, the work was a great success. The volume also includes miscellaneous historical and literary biographies of figures such as Paolo Sarpi, Sir Francis Drake and Roger Ascham.

  • A leading figure in Romanticism and a political campaigner committed to social reform, Lord Byron (1788–1824) is regarded as one of the greatest of British poets. First published in 1922, this two-volume work is a compilation of letters Byron wrote between 1808 and 1824 to some of his close friends, including Lady Melbourne, John Cam Hobhouse, a fellow-student at Cambridge, and Percy Bysshe Shelley. The introduction and biographical notes by the publisher John Murray IV (1851–1928), grandson of Byron's own publisher John Murray II, supplement the letters and restore their narrative thread. Volume 1 covers the period 1808–15, from the trip Byron took across Europe with Hobhouse as a young man to his marriage to Anne Isabella Milbanke. A large portion of the volume is devoted to Byron's letters to Lady Melbourne, in which he reveals the many details of his tormented love life.
