This series includes pioneering editions of medieval historical accounts by eye-witnesses and contemporaries, collections of source materials such as charters and letters and works that applied new historiographical methods to the interpretation of the European middle ages. The nineteenth century saw an upsurge of interest in medieval manuscripts, texts and artefacts, and the enthusiastic efforts of scholars and antiquaries made a large body of material available in print for the first time. Although many of the analyses have been superseded, they provide fascinating evidence of the academic practices of their time, while a considerable number of texts have still not been re-edited and are still widely consulted.

  • William Stubbs (1825–1901), one of the leading historians of his generation, pursued his academic research alongside his work as a clergyman. He was elected Regius Professor of Modern History at Oxford in 1866 and appointed a bishop in 1884. Stubbs was a foundational figure in medieval English history, with a special interest in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. The three-volume study reissued here, originally published between 1874 and 1878, was one of his most influential works. Nine editions appeared during his lifetime and it was prescribed reading for generations of students. It traces the evolution of English political institutions from the early Anglo-Saxon invasions of Britain to 1485, relying mainly on primary sources. Volume 2, published in 1875, focuses on the period from Edward I to Richard II, tracing the development of Parliament and the rise of the Commons, and examining the issue of the royal prerogative.

  • Originally published for the Record Commissioners in 1840, this two-volume work remains a standard source for scholars of Anglo-Saxon and early Norman legal history. Benjamin Thorpe (1781?–1870) was a respected and prolific scholar and translator of Old English, whose publications in the field earned him a civil list pension in 1835. Trained in Copenhagen under Rasmus Rask, Thorpe advocated a scientific approach to philology, and this is reflected in the thoroughness of the notes, commentary, and concordance appended to the sources reprinted here. The preface to the text places the laws in their historical and geographical context, notes where there are unavoidable gaps in the evidence, and offers a descriptive analysis of the original documents. Volume 1 contains the secular laws issued from the reign of Æthelberht to that of Henry I, with a parallel translation of the Anglo-Saxon text, although the sources in Latin and French remain untranslated.

  • This history of the reigns of the first two emperors of the Palaiologos Dynasty by George Pachymeres (1242–1310) was edited by the German scholar Immanuel Bekker (1785–1871) on the basis of the work of the French Jesuit, Pierre Poussines (1609–86), and published in two volumes in 1835. The family of Pachymeres, like the aristocratic Palaiologoi, had fled to the neighbouring empire of Nicaea (Iznik) after the capture of Constantinople by the Franks in 1204. Michael Palaiologos (1223–82) became leader of the armies in Nicaea in 1259; two years later he had driven the Latins from Constantinople and was crowned Emperor Michael VIII, with his two-year-old son Andronikos (1259–1332) as his co-ruler and heir. Pachymeres also wrote on music, rhetoric and philosophy, but is best remembered for this history of his own times. Volume 1 describes the life and reign of Michael Palaiologos.

  • This six-volume work, published between 1860 and 1890, contains a selection of documents in Greek which throw light on the history and politics of the Byzantine Empire in the Middle Ages. The editors, Franz Miklosich (1813–91), philosopher, linguist and Slovenian nationalist, and Josef (or Giuseppe) Müller (1823–95), a Greek scholar who also translated many important works by German classical historians into Italian, used as one of their sources the volumes of Greek manuscripts brought back to Vienna by Ogier Ghiselin de Busbecq (1522–92), the Flemish diplomat, herbalist, and travel writer who had acted as Imperial Ambassador to the Sublime Porte. Volume 6 (published in 1890) contains texts relating to the great Orthodox Monastery of St John on Patmos, founded in 1088 by St Christodoulos and dedicated to the author of The Book of Revelation, which was written on the island.

  • This eight-volume set of summaries of state documents (commemoriali) of the Republic of Venice was compiled and edited by Riccardo Predelli (1842–1909), and appeared between 1876 and 1914 as part of a wider series, 'Monumenti Storici', devoted to publishing the content of the nine-hundred-year-old archives of Venice at a time when the original documents seemed in danger of being lost through decay. Predelli notes in his preface that a similar concern was expressed by Doge Iacopo Tiepolo, who in 1248 ordered a commission to sort and codify the legal statutes of the city, which were in complete confusion. The works, arranged roughly in chronological order, provide summaries (and sometimes complete documents) of the political, diplomatic, commercial and legal activities of the Republic, and are a fascinating research resource. Volume 2 (published 1878) contains books 3–6 of the Commemoriali, covering the period from the 1320s to the 1360s.

  • The author of this history was a member of the Byzantine Doukas family, a grandson of Michael Doukas, who had come to prominence in the civil wars of the fourteenth century, and possibly a remote descendant of the eleventh-century emperor Michael VII. His own first name and dates of birth and death are not known, but he seemed to have worked for a Genoese family or business, and after the fall of Constantinople took refuge on the island of Lesbos, then controlled by the Genoese Gattilusi dynasty. His history of the period 1341–1462, including the Ottoman conquest, survived in one manuscript: this 1834 edition by Immanuel Bekker provides, as well as a Latin translation of the original Greek text, a near-contemporary Italian version of unknown authorship discovered in a Venetian library by the historian Leopold Ranke, who supplied it to Bekker.

  • William Stubbs (1825–1901), one of the leading historians of his generation, pursued his academic research alongside his work as a clergyman. He was elected Regius Professor of Modern History at Oxford in 1866 and appointed a bishop in 1884. Stubbs was a major figure in medieval English historiography, with special interests in legal and constitutional history. This work was first published in 1870. It begins with an outline of English constitutional history, which he urged should be part of the curriculum, and then presents documents from Roman times up to the thirteenth century. Eight editions followed in Stubbs' lifetime, and it became a core textbook. The ninth edition of 1913, revised by H. W. C. Davis (1874–1928), is reissued here, and contains better editions and translations of Anglo-Saxon and French texts than were available in Stubbs' lifetime, as well as some then newly discovered material and an updated glossary.

  • This two-volume work contains documents from the Venetian state archives from the period 1300–1454. They refer to Venice's dealings with her own empire across the eastern Mediterranean and with foreign powers, including Turkish sultans and Byzantine emperors. At that time, Venetian power was at its zenith (the doges boasted of being rulers of 'one-quarter and one-half of a quarter of the whole world'), but there were dangers to Venetian naval and mercantile supremacy from the continuous advance of the Ottoman Turks across the territory formerly ruled from Constantinople. Volume 2, covering the period 1351–1454, was prepared for the press by Riccardo Predelli (1842–1909) after the death of G. M. Thomas (1817–87), and published in 1899. The final two documents are a declaration of peace with Venice by Sultan Mehmed II in 1451, and a peace treaty with Ibrahim Bey in 1454: between those dates, Constantinople had fallen.

  • This 1868 publication contains transcriptions of 549 Latin charters from the eleventh to the thirteenth centuries relating to the early history of the Benedictine abbey of Saint Étienne de Baigne, in south-west France. The thirteenth-century manuscript containing them had been bought after the French Revolution by the bishop of Angoulême, to whom the edition is dedicated. The texts record details of property bequests, donations, land use and taxes, and provide valuable data on the economics and politics of medieval France. The substantial introduction (in French) sets the documents in context, and the book ends with a comprehensive index of names and places, a detailed chronological table keyed to the relevant charters, and a glossary giving the location and modern names of the places mentioned in the charters, with additional notes on their history. The editor had planned to edit two further cartularies, but died in 1867 while completing the index.

  • Published in 1856–7, this fascinating collection of Latin and Greek source material on the politics and economy of the Republic of Venice includes charters, treaties and official letters, focusing particularly on relations between Venice and Constantinople. The editors were Gottlieb Tafel (1787–1860), a pioneering Byzantinist who retired from his chair at Tübingen in 1846, and Georg Thomas (1817–87), Professor of Classical Philology at Munich. The preface announces their plan to cover the ninth to the fifteenth centuries. However, only three volumes, containing material to 1299, appeared at that time. Thomas returned to the project in later life and two further volumes covering 1300–1454 appeared with a different publisher as Diplomatarium Veneto-Levantinum (also reissued in this series). Volume 2 covers the years 1205–55, focusing on the fate of Constantinople, the diverse interests of the Papacy, and negotiations with Hungary, Syria, Egypt and Crete.

John Mitchell Kemble (1807–57) collected his material from many different places (the British Museum, the official records then in the Tower of London, cathedral archives, college libraries, and various private collections), and arranged it as best he could in chronological order. He believed passionately that he was laying foundations for a new history of the English people, and his work formed the basis for his study The Saxons in England (1849), also reissued in this series. Volume 4 of the Codex (1846) contains texts from the early eleventh century to the Norman Conquest, including some derived from the then newly discovered Codex Wintoniensis.

  • This three-volume edition, in Greek with Latin translation, of the History by Nicephorus Gregoras (c. 1295–1360) was edited by Ludwig Schopen (Volumes 1 and 2, 1829–30) and Immanuel Bekker (Volume 3, 1855). The astronomer and historian, Gregpras, became the archivist of the Byzantine Emperor Andronikos II Palaiologos (to whom he proposed a calendar reform similar to that adopted by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582), and was involved in the fruitless negotiations of 1333 to unite the Greek and Latin Churches. The thirty-seven books of Gregoras' History overlap with the work by George Pachymeres, and continue the narrative to 1359. This period is also covered in the History by the ex-Emperor John Cantacuzene, and both these authors are also reissued in this series. Volume 3 describes the overthrow of John VI, his withdrawal to a monastery, and the accession of John V Palaiologos, the son of Andronikos III.

  • This three-volume work of Byzantine history by the ex-Emperor John VI Cantacuzene was edited, together with a Latin translation by the Jesuit scholar, Pontanus (1542–1626), by Ludwig Schopen (1799–1867), and published between 1828 and 1832. It covers part of the same period as the works by George Pachymeres and Nicephorus Gregoras (also reissued in this series) and the three accounts can usefully be compared. John Cantacuzene (c. 1292–1383) was unusual among Byzantine emperors in that he appears to have been reluctant to take the throne, and also in that, having been deposed in 1354, he was allowed to retire to a monastery, where he wrote this account of his times. The historian Edward Gibbon, among others, noted the self-justificatory tone of his memoir. Volume 3 takes the narrative from John's accession to his deposition, and the defeat of his son Matthew by John V in 1357.
