T.S. Eliots's life took him from the United States to England, from philosophy to poetry and from modern scepticism to traditional Christianity. Colin MacCabe's study places Eliot's poetry in the context of these journeys and uses Eliot's life to illuminate his poetry. This poetry, although very modest in quantity, remains one of the great artistic triumphs of the English language. In his ironic accounts of adolescent desire in 'The Love Song of Alfred Prufrock' and 'Portrait of a Lady', he performs masculine self-doubt with a pathos and wit that has yet to be surpassed in poem, book or song. But these early poems can seem like mere exercises beside the astonishing achievements of 'Gerontion' and 'The Wasteland', poems which defined a generation and which broke the mould in English verse to allow a symphony of despairing voices to bear witness to the destruction in Europe. Finally, in 'Four Quartets' he forges an original form and a compelling tone to hymn both religious belief and national destiny as England faced defeat at the hands of Germany.
This book is the first full-scale exploration of the fiction of one of the most influential women writing in English in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. While Lee's work was well-admired in her own day, her fiction and her writings on aesthetics, 'The Woman in Question' and psychology appeared anachronistic to later twentieth-century audiences. The recent upsurge of interest in the culture of the fin de siècle and lesbian Modernist writing has assured Lee a well-deserved critical resurrection and this book explores her ground-breaking literary work in light of the turbulent friendships that she had with figures such as Oscar Wilde, H.G. Wells and Virginia Woolf. A belle-lettriste, a self-consciously Continental intellectual and a pacifist, Lee's changing authorial masks doubly participate and anticipate the wider shift from Victorian earnestness to Modernist play marking British letters over the course of fifty years. Ultimately, however, Lee emerges as an increasingly isolated figure harried both by her attraction to other women and the incipient destruction of her beloved Europe in the 'Great Game' of Empire.

Olive Schreiner, who was born in 1855 in South Africa, has become a central literary figure for thinking about the complex debates surrounding gender, imperialism and class between 1880 and 1920. Aesthetically bold and politically passionate, Schreiner wrote novels, short stories, lyrical fragments she called dreams, as well as non-fiction and political polemic. Her work is widely acknowledged as a significant, though unconventional, contribution to the 'New Woman' debates of the fin de siècle, while her anti-imperialism helped to challenge and reshape feminist thinking. This volume explores Schreiner's contribution to these debates, while also focusing on the shaping influence of both religion and science on her work. It discusses the range of her work, including her novels, The Story of an African Farm, Undine, and From Man to Man; her feminist tract Woman and Labour and short fictions and allegories about the position of women; and her diverse writings about South Africa, her country of birth.
Everyone knows how funny Evelyn Waugh is. This study discusses Adcock as a writer who draws on her experiences of dislocation in order to position herself between cultures. Contrasting her work with that of the post-war British poetic mainstream with which she has been associated, it emphasises that the radically displaced feminised consciousness which negotiates the boundaries between self and other can be identified in Adcock's poetry as metonymic of resolving national and cultural differences. Wilson argues that displaced voices such as hers from white settler colonies like New Zealand now belong to multicultural Britain. Her close readings of Adcock's verse in terms of its ironic double vision focus on the blend of classical restraint, wit, and humour, in relation to her complex revaluation of the diasporic imaginary of the exile. Claiming that Adcock's personal mythology, based on her divided nationality and gendered consciousness, recalls writers like Jane Austen and her fellow expatriate, Katherine Mansfield, Wilson argues that the best of her work transcends the immediate problems of her age.
