"Sinclair Hood (1917-2021) was Assistant Director (1949-1950) and Director of the BSA (1954-1962). He excavated on the island of Chios in 1952-1955, a campaign that not only uncovered the important prehistoric site of Emborio (Excavations in Chios 1938-1955: Prehistoric Emporio and Ayio Gala, 1982), but pioneered underwater explorations that he went on to apply on Crete. Although a life-time sceptic about Ventris’ decipherment of Linear B, Sinclair published new Linear B tablets found at Knossos. His career in BSA fieldwork spans the excavations of Wace at Mycenae (1950) to his own extensive excavations at the site of Knossos and in its vicinity (from 1950 onwards). Sinclair also travelled widely in Crete with colleagues, identifying many new sites in the western half of the island, much in the tradition of John Pendlebury in the 1930s. All these aspects of Hood’s publishing career are reflected in this bundle of articles published in the ABSA to coincide with the publication of his obituary in volume 116." John Bennet
