Length 4.5-6 mm.; width 2.2-3 mm. Oblong, moderately convex and elongate, parallel. Head, pronotum, and ventral thoracic sclerites black; apical margin of clypeus and lateral pronotal margins broadly reddish brown; elytra dark reddish brown; legs and abdomen reddish brown; strongly shining.

I have recently had the pleasure of examining and determining the Ephemerid material collected by Prof. F. Neave and his assistants at Jasper Park, Alta., during the course of an investigation into the insect fauna of the lakes and rivers of this region conducted by the University of Manitoba.

Otiocerus kirbyi Fh. is unknown to the writer. It would fall under CC. of Group II by description. It may well be a pale form of one of these species. The species found in collections under the name of signoreti Fh. is undoubtedly reaumuri Kby. Metcalf separated the latter as “without” the five spots ignoring the fact that Kirby specially describes them. In the explanation of Plate 40 Metcalf has reversed the name of O. degeeri, and coqueberti. The head of the example of the latter species must have been distorted or out of focus as in nature the apex is but little less than a right angle.

Neottiglossa tumidifrons n. sp.

Head, with the portion before the vertex concave and bent dorvnwards, closely punctate above and on the sides, the punctations becoming coarse and uneven near the middle of the concavity. Lorver lateral margins of the head carinated, above which the juga are roundly thickened, the thickening extending without interruption to the extremities of the juga, which are contiguous beyond the tip of the tylus.

Judging by five specimens before me the early spring generation (April-May) from southern British Columbia shows several points of distinction from the second generation, appearing in the latter half of June. The size is notably smaller, (♂ 36-40 mm.; ♀ 40-42 mm.; as compared with 45-50 mm.), the discal spot of primaries, especially in the ♂, is much narrower, and more as in the European chloridice, and the green of the underside is brighter and even along the veins shows only faint yellow sprinkling.

The following species are described as new:

Arctocorixa compressoidea sp. n.

Size: 5.4 mm. long.

Color: Dark. Seven light bands of pronotum narrower than the dark ones and caudal ones deeply impressed; third and fourth bands often united on ends ; longitudinal median pale line on pronotum. Pale transverse bands of clavus oblique and entire on basal half ; apical ones slender, broken, crooked and few in number. Pale lines of corium also slender, broken, sometimes mere transverse dashes arranged in longitudinal series. Membrane smoky brown, pattern almost obliterated. Elytral suture, line between corium and membrane and embollium reddish yellow. Vertex in all my specimens more or less darkened. Limbs and venter pale.

The following notes are based upon a collection made by Dr. Vasco M. Tanner and associates during the early part of the summer of 1927 in the La Sal Mountains of San Juan County, Utah.

The discovery of the forms described below increases greatly the known distribution of Glaresis on the North American continent. In the following descriptions, the middle and hind tibiae have not been described in great detail for their characters are shown by the accompanying drawings; the drawings are made in the same scale.

The subgenus Platyderides was erected to include those species of Aphodius in which the side pronotal margins are explanate. The group is better known as Horn's series I-a. The genus Aphodius does not lend itself well to subdivision, consequently Platyderides is not sharply defined. The only character of key value in defining the group is the explanate pronotal side margin, but this character is lacking in insolitus and feebly developed in several others. The species are usually strongly shining and medium sized or large for the genus.

In attempting to determine specimens of Dicyphus using Blatchley's key (Heterop. East. N. Am. 1926, p. 908) difficulty was encountered and the following key is presented to facilitate the identification of the species occuring in Eastern North America. It has already been demonstrated by Knight (Bull. Brook. Ent. Soc., XXII, 1927, p. 104) that D. notatus Parshley is a synonym of D. vestitus Uhler and that D. gracilentus Parsh. should not be confused with vestitus Uhl.

The genus Archytas was erected in 1867 with A. bicolor as type. In 1888 Van der Wulp established the genus Nemochaeta with dissimilis as type and in 1903 gave a key to the Cenrtral American species. Since that time no treatment of the species occurring in America has been presented and the description of the species are for the most part very unsatisfactory, resulting in uncertainty as to their identity. In most cases it is impossible to determine the described species without an examination of the types and until such time as these have been examined they must be considered unrecognizable.

Length, 11 to 12 mm. Male. Front pale cinereous pollinose the parafrontal hair black; third antennal joint narrowly reddish below; basal aristal joint slightly longer than broad, the second elongate. Pleura yellow pilose. Three posterior acrosticals. Abdomen shining black, the sides usually very broadly castaneous, the apical segment pale brassy yellowish pruinose; rather broad apex of first and base of second segments cinereous pollinose. Second abdominal seqment with strong marginals. Fifth sternite simple, with moderately strong apical bristles. Ridges of posterior forceps moderately high, flattened, hairy on inner and outer surfaces, the apex as in figure 28; the outer forceps are as in A. plangens n. sp. (see figure 27).

Male: Length 1.8 mm. Front and face opaque brown. Antennae small, black, arista as long as the face, palpi black; proboscis shining black with a few short yellow hairs; lower orbital cilia whitish.

Brightly shining, brown above, lighter ochraceous brown beneath, form more elongate and narrower than most of the fasciated species, such as P. varius and P. nitidus. Length 6.25 mm., breadth 1.75 mm.

Female. Length 1.5 mm., thorax and abdomen dark brownish black, the latter without lighter bands. Legs fuscous brown, all tibiae with broad pale bands.

Antenna. front and palpi dull blackish brown. Scutellum dull black, remainder of dorsum and metanotum dark brownish black, shining; pleura dark brownish. Coxae, femora, bases and apices of tibiae dark brown, each tibia with a broad fairly well defined dirty white band beginning at basal one fourth and extending to apical one third of tibia. A11 legs with subappressed fuscous hairs in length about equal to the diameter of the joint which bears them; leg hairs pale yellowish in region of the pale tibial bands. Anterior wing veins brownish; entire membrane infuscated. Halteres with base of stalk brownish, apex and knob pale lemon yellow.

In rearranging and briefly investigating the species of Lina and some allied genera in our collection, assisted by additional material kindly sent me by Messrs. Carr of Alberta, Hopping of British Columbia, Frost of Massachusetts, and Notman and Shoemaker of New York, the following notes were made, which in some cases correct a few misidentifications or add to the recorded distribution of some species.

This study of the taxonomic units comprising the genus Odontaeus Dej. has occupied, for the past three years, by far the greater part of such time as I can devote to entomology, and yet it is with a feeling of dissatisfaction that the following conclusions are offered to coleopterists.
