The adsorption of Cr(III) was studied at pH 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, and 10 on chlorite and kaolinite and at pH 1, 2, 3, and 6 on illite. The amount of chromium adsorbed on chlorite varied from 3.1 × 10–5 mole/ g at pH 1 to 16.6 × 10–5 mole/g at pH 4, and on illite from 4.9 × 10–5 mole/g to 9.2 × 10–5 mole/g at pH 1 and 3, respectively. Kaolinite adsorbed 3.7 × 10–5 mole Cr/g at pH 1, 2, and 3 and 5.5 × 10–5 mole Cr/g at pH 4. Measurements of the Cr 2p core-level binding energies indicate that chromium is probably adsorbed as a Cr(III) aqua ion at pH values below 4. The binding energies for the Cr 2p level for samples prepared above pH 4 compare favorably with the value determined for chromium hydroxide and lead to the conclusion that the chromium species present at pH 6, 8, and 10 is chromium hydroxide.

Thirty two boehmites, synthesized at temperatures ranging from room temperature to 300°C, were examined by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, electron diffraction, X-ray powder diffraction, differential thermal analysis, and infrared spectroscopy. The results show that boehmite exhibits a continuous gradation in crystallite size ranging from single octahedral layers or a few unit cells to about 65 unit cells in the y-direction. This conclusion suggests that the term pseudoboehmite is inappropriate for finely crystalline boehmite. Finely crystalline boehmite contains more sorbed water than coarsely crystalline boehmite; this water is commonly intercalated between octahedral layers, usually randomly but sometimes regularly. The regularly interstratified boehmite gives rise to a diffuse “long spacing” X-ray diffraction reflection. Calculated 020 X-ray diffraction peaks approximate closely those observed experimentally when a range of crystallite sizes is taken into account.

Glauconite has been synthesized at low temperature by precipitation of Fe-hydroxides from Si-, Fe-, Al-, and K-containing solutions under reducing conditions. The compositions favorable for the synthesis at 20°C and pH 8.5 are 1 ppm Fe, 0.15 ppm Al, 13 ppm Si02, 1000 ppm KC1, and 1000 ppm dithionite. The K-content of the solutions must be sufficiently high to fix K in the precipitate.

Under special early diagenetic conditions glauconite is formed in marine sediments, probably at the interface between reducing and oxidizing zones in the muddy sediments. The silica content of pore waters seems to control the formation of glauconite or chamosite rather than depth or temperatures of the bottom waters.

Hydrothermal alteration products of serpentinite near Takovo, Yugoslavia, were studied by X-ray powder diffraction and chemical analysis. A zone of mainly blue clays adjacent to the hydrothermal vein contains intimately associated chromium kaolinite and tosudite at higher hypsometric levels and chromium halloysite(10Å) form at lower levels. A second zone of green clays contains principally illite/smectites, with predominantly illite layers nearer the first zone and smectite layers at greater distances. The potassium content diminishes as the proportion of illite layers diminishes. The composition of the smectite layers in the illite/smectite with the least proportion of illite is shown to be beidellitic. The mineralogical and chemical changes across the zone of alteration are interpreted in terms of two stages of alteration in which the second is more acidic than the first and is responsible for the inner zone of chromium-bearing kaolinite and tosudite and chromium halloysite.

The adsorption of Sn(IV)TPyP (mesotetrapyridylporphyrin) in sodium hectorite was studied using ultraviolet-visible and luminescence spectroscopy. The adsorbed complex was found to demetallate forming the TPyP dication as the clay is dehydrated. This process was found to be reversible indicating that the Sn4+ ion remains in the vicinity of the porphyrin upon demetallation. The luminescence spectrum of the adsorbed complex was found to be a composite of the Sn(IV)TPyP and the dication spectra. The presence of a band at 750 nm in the luminescence spectrum of the adsorbed species suggested an enhanced interaction between the π-systems of the pyridyl substituents and the porphin nucleus. This is believed to result from a decrease in the dihedral angle between the nucleus and the substituents when they are squeezed between the clay sheets.

Organic diacid (oxalic and succinic) adsorption onto montmorillonite is feasible, but weak (~1 mg/g). The comparison of chemical and radiochemical determinations reveals that 80% of the acid in contact with the smectite is used to attack the clay lattice. The pH is the main parameter involved in adsorption, and fixation passes through a minimum for pH 6 to 7. Polyacrylate adsorption is also weak (~1.5 mg/g). It changes with the nature of the exchangeable cation of smectite. Its pH-dependence displays a pronounced maximum for a value corresponding to the pKa of the acidic functions (pH ~6.8), and a minimum at about pH 8. On the assumption that a polyacrylate macromolecule is 100% hydrolyzed, it follows that the-COOH groups carried by 20% hydrolyzed Polyacrylamide molecules (such as those used in the tertiary recovery of petroleum) contribute at the very most to 10% of the total adsorption onto clay. Fixation, therefore, involves predominantly protonation of the amide functions at the edge surfaces of the clay. The acidic functions play a minor role in the adsorption phenomenon in that they affect the length of the macromolecule. The extent of this contribution, however, is virtually impossible to estimate.

Seven kaolins from Georgia (southeastern U.S.A.), ranging from high to low commercial grade, were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction and chemical techniques to establish that the variation in quality was caused by impurities. The Ca and Cs cation-exchange capacities (CEC) varied from 2.67 to 8.17 and from 3.29 to 8.77 meq/100g, respectively. Selective dissolution and correlation analyses strongly indicated that expandable 2:1 minerals, particularly smectite (1.2-5.9%), were responsible for most of the observed variations in Ca CEC (r = 0.85*). The external surface CEC of kaolinite ranged from 0 to 1 meq/ 100 g. The positive significant correlation (r = 0.90**) between the Ca CEC and the K-mica content (03.9%) suggested that Ca CEC may be related to the degree of mica weathering through an expandable mineral stage.

The Cs-retention capacity (0.19–1.14 meq/100 g) was closely related to Cs-measured vermiculite content (r = 0.80*), and this content plus specific surface (R = 0.93**) or mica content (R = 0.86*). The Cs retention appeared to be primarily related to the presence of interlayer wedges at mica/vermiculite XY interfaces.

The effects of NaOAc removal of carbonates, H2O2 removal of organic materials, and sodium citrate-bicarbonate-dithionite (SCBD) removal of iron oxides upon the X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) characteristics of clay minerals present within weathered volcanic ash deposits were examined. All pretreatments of samples derived from the Ae and Bhf horizons containing volcanic ash resulted in dramatic increases in XRD peak intensities, while the treatment of IIC-horizon samples resulted in subdued XRD peak intensities. Also, the chemical treatments produced an apparent increase in the amount of expandable clay minerals within the Ae horizon, due probably to the hydrolysis and removal of interlayer Al3+ when H2O2 and SCBD were used. Hence, poorly ordered and pedogenically modified vermiculite or vermiculite/montmorillonite interstratifications became “weathered” by H+ attack and Al3+ removal in a manner similar to the natural processes which take place in the acid and eluvial A horizon. In addition, possible XRD peak modification due to the dilution of crystalline clay concentrations by amorphous clay-size material appeared to be subordinate to the laboratory-induced chemical alteration of the weathered clay minerals.

The thermal decomposition of a kaolinite:dimethyl sulfoxide intercalate has been studied by thermogravimetry. The decomposition is complete by 175°C and has a ΔH of 58 ± 5 kJ/mole of dimethyl sulfoxide. For the first 70–80% of the reaction a plot of log(l — α) vs. time is linear, where α is the reaction fraction complete. A two-dimensional, contracting-circle type of mechanism is consistent with this linearity, provided that the nucleation process is considered to be exponential rather than instantaneous. An activation energy of 105 ± 8 kJ/mole of dimethyl sulfoxide has been derived. This value is inconsistent with the simple assumption that the rate-determining step is the freeing of single organic molecules from their bonding to the clay layers. The mechanism of this decomposition is different from that found for kaolinite: N-methyl formamide, and the activation energy is considerably greater than that found for that material (30 ± 3 kJ/mole).

Adsorption of Co2+ and Cd2+ on Wyoming montmorillonite was studied by the batch equilibration technique, as a function of salt concentration (0.01–4 M NaCl and NaNO3), pH (5.0–6.5), adsorbate concentration (trace-10−2 moles/liter), and presence of complexing ions. Comparison was made with the adsorbability of Sr2+, known to follow simple ion-exchange equations. The distribution coefficients for Co and Cd in noncomplexing media varied with salt concentration (from ∼500 liters/kg in 0.01 M Na+ to ∼10 liters/kg in 1 M Na+; pH = 5), but to a lesser extent than that of Sr. Adsorbability varied also with pH (∼1 order of magnitude/pH unit), especially at high ionic strength, compared to a negligible pH effect on Sr. The distribution coefficients of Cd and Co decreased with increasing loading on the clay at a very low percentage (0.2%) of the ion-exchange capacity compared to Sr (20%). These data suggest two classes of sites participating in the adsorption of Cd and Co.

The adsorbability of Cd in highly concentrated chloride solution (>1 M) was less than 1 liter/kg, presumably because of the chloride complex formation. This effect increased with increasing pH. The low adsorbability of Cd on montmorillonite from concentrated NaCl solution is promising with respect to its use as a tracer for monitoring flow through formations containing montmorillonite.

Intracrystalline water adsorption of Ca-montmorillonite was calculated as the product of one-half the interlayer spacing from X-ray powder diffraction analysis and the difference between the desorption surface area determined with ethylene glycol-monoethyl ether and BET surface area determined by N2 adsorption. Osmotic adsorption was calculated as the product of the N2 surface area and theoretical double layer thickness. Measured water adsorption of P2O5-dry clay, compacted to initial densities (γ0) from 0.52 to 1.59 g/cm3 and submerged in 0.01 N CaCl2 was 2.4 to 4.2 times greater than intracrystalline plus osmotic adsorption due to the occurrence of pores exceeding double layer dimensions. The increase in expansion caused by reducing electrolyte concentration to 0.001 N was equal to the predicted increase in double layer volume, verifying the existence of an osmotic component to swelling.

Measured expansion following submersion in 0.01 N CaCl2 increased continuously with γ0 from 0.53 cm3/g at γ0 = 0.52 g/cm3 to 1.17 cm3/g at γ0 = 1.59 g/cm3, while estimated osmotic plus intracrystalline expansion was constant at 0.30 cm3/g. This discrepancy is attributed to swelling caused by gas pressures developing ahead of advancing wetting fronts. The effect of compaction on expansion is explained by reductions in pore size, as measured by N2 desorption, which accompany compaction. Reduced pore size should increase entrapped air pressures, whereas gradual wetting should favor their dissipation. Accordingly, slow wetting reduced the expansion of a sample where γ0 = 1.06 g/cm3 from 0.77 to 0.37 cm3/g. Swelling due to entrapped air pressures produced a large increase in the number of pores > 104 Å in diameter, as determined by Hg intrusion porosimetry.
