The objective of this study was to determine what factors are associated with behavioral health in veterinary disaster responders.

An online cross-sectional survey was distributed via snowball sampling. Results were analyzed using chi-square analyses.

Responses from 237 veterinarians were analyzed. Being involved in more than 1 disaster event was associated with higher anxiety and/or depression (43.4% vs 28.6%, respectively), difficulty with relationships (28.1% vs 14.3%, respectively), and a greater prevalence of sleep problems (44.6% vs 28.0%, respectively) compared to only being involved in 1 event. Veterinarians that were deployed longer than 2 months had the highest prevalence of anxiety and/or depression (43.9%) and sleep problems (50.0%). Veterinarians that received behavioral health training before deployment had lower rates of anxiety and/or depression (27.8% vs 42.9%, respectively) compared to those who did not receive training. Respondents involved with depopulation had the highest rates of anxiety and/or depression (66.7%) and sleep problems (58.1%).

Factors associated with behavioral health outcomes included the number and length of deployments, receiving behavioral health training, and being involved in depopulation. To reduce the risk of behavioral health outcomes, interventions such as time-off and behavioral health support are needed.

The Public Health Extreme Events Research (PHEER) Network is a researcher-led network that aims to advance the public health disaster science field by coordinating a community of practice that can rapidly mobilize to conduct time-sensitive research in the aftermath of disasters. This presentation will introduce PHEER to the public health emergency preparedness and response community and allow for input into the evolving public health research framework.

The purpose of this study is to examine the national impact of workplace factors during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic on mental health experienced by non-physician healthcare workers (HCWs).

This study consisted of an online sample of non-physician HCWs across the United States, including nurses, medical assistants, and physician assistants. The survey consisted of 93 questions, which included the Perceived Stress Scale, the Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression (CESD-10) scale, questions about COVID-19 vaccination, sources of trusted information, and questions about work environment and training during the COVID-19 pandemic. Descriptive statistics were used to evaluate associations.

In the final sample (N = 220), (81.8%) reported receiving at least one dose of a COVID vaccine. Most respondents trusted the CDC’s information on the SARS-CoV-2 virus and COVID-19 disease. Several workplace-related factors that occurred during the pandemic were associated with moderate to high levels of perceived stress, fatigue, and higher risk of developing depression. In particular, concerns about exposing others, experiencing discrimination related to their jobs, and caring for patients who died from COVID-19 were associated with increased perceived stress, depression, and fatigue.

The importance of planning by healthcare facilities should include planning for workplace factors associated with poor mental health among all HCWs.

The impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) on hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) care is unclear. This study reports on HCC patterns during the COVID-19 pandemic in the Netherlands.

Patients diagnosed with HCC between 2017 and 2020 were identified from the Netherlands Cancer Registration. Monthly incidence rates were compared between 2020 and 2017–2019. Patient, tumor, process, and treatment characteristics and survival were compared between 2020 and 2017–2019, and between COVID-high (April and May 2020) and COVID-low (June and July 2020) months.

The incidence of HCC was lower in May 2020 (IRR 0.56, P = 0.001) and higher in June 2020 (IRR 1.32, P = 0.05) compared to the same months in 2017–2019. In 2017–2019, 2134 patients presented with HCC, compared to 660 in 2020. Time-to-treatment was shorter in 2020 (median 60 vs. 70 days, P < 0.001). The percentage of patients undergoing any treatment did not differ, yet if treatment was not performed this was more commonly due to comorbidity in 2020 (52 vs. 39%, P < 0.001). No other differences were found in patient, tumor, process and treatment characteristics and survival between COVID-high and COVID-low months.

This study demonstrated no impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on HCC patients, despite a decrease in HCC diagnoses.

Chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) incidents require meticulous preparedness, particularly in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. This study evaluated CBRN response operational flowcharts, tabletop training scenarios methods, and a health sector preparedness assessment tool specific to the MENA region.

An online Delphi survey engaging international disaster medicine experts was conducted. Content validity indices (CVIs) were used to validate the items. Consensus metrics, including interquartile ranges (IQRs) and Kendall’s W coefficient, were utilized to assess the panelists’ agreement levels. Advanced artificial intelligence computing methods, including sentiment analysis and machine-learning methods (t-distributed stochastic neighbor embedding [t-SNE] and k-means), were used to cluster the consensus data.

Forty experts participated in this study. The item-level CVIs for the CBRN response flowcharts, preparedness assessment tool, and tabletop scenarios were 0.96, 0.85, and 0.84, respectively, indicating strong content validity. Consensus analysis demonstrated an IQR of 0 for most items and a strong Kendall’s W coefficient, indicating a high level of agreement among the panelists. The t-SNE and k-means identified four clusters with greater European response engagement.

This study validated essential CBRN preparedness and response tools using broad expert consensus, demonstrating their applicability across different geographic areas.

Artificial intelligence (AI) in emergency medicine has been increasingly studied over the past decade. However, the implementation of AI requires significant buy-in from end-users. This study explored desired clinical applications of AI by emergency physicians.

A 3-round Delphi process was undertaken using STAT59 software. An international expert panel was assembled through purposeful sampling to reflect a diversity in geography, age, time in practice, practice setting, role, and expertise. Items generated in Round 1 were collated by the study team and ranked in Rounds 2 and 3 on a 7-point linear numeric scale of importance. Consensus was defined as a standard deviation of 1.0 or less.

Of 66 invited experts, 29 completed Round 1, 25 completed Round 2, and 23 completed Round 3. Three statements reached consensus in Round 2 and four statements reached consensus in Round 3, including safe prescribing, guiding choice of drug, adjusting drug doses, identifying risk or prognosis, and reporting/interpreting investigation results.

Many desired clinical applications of AI in emergency medicine have not yet been explored. Clinical and technological experts should co-create new applications to ensure buy-in from all stakeholders. Specialty organizations can lead the way by establishing local clinical priorities.

To minimize loss of life, mass casualty response requires swift identification, efficient triage categorization, and rapid hemorrhage control. Current training methods remain suboptimal. Our objective was to train first responders to triage a mass casualty incident using Virtual Reality (VR) simulation and obtain their impressions of the training’s quality and effectiveness.

We trained subjects in SALT Triage then had them respond to a terrorist bombing of a subway station using a fully immersive VR simulation. We gathered learner reactions to their VR experience and post-encounter debriefing with a custom electronic survey.

Nearly 400 subjects experienced the VR encounter and completed evaluation surveys. Most participants (95%) recommended the experience for other first responders and rated the simulation (95%) and virtual patients (91%) as realistic. Ninety-four percent of participants rated the VR simulator as “excellent” or “good.” We observed no differences between those who owned a personal VR system and those who did not.

Our VR simulator (go.osu.edu/firstresponder) is an automated, customizable, fully immersive virtual reality system for training and assessing personnel in the proper response to a mass casualty incident. Participants perceived the encounter as effective for training, regardless of their prior experience with virtual reality.

This study aims to identify midwives’ post-earthquake caregiving experiences.

A phenomenological study was undertaken in May-June 2023. The participants of the study consisted of 15midwives who were included in the study with the purposeful sampling method and volunteered to provide care during the earthquake. Data were collected by an in-depth interview method using a demographic information form and a semi-structured interview form. Thematic analysis was conducted on interview transcripts.

The research identified 2main themes: difficulties in managing midwifery care and the psychological impact of the earthquake on midwives. Challenges included issues with disaster organization, management, and coordination; communication gaps; insufficient medical supplies; harsh environmental conditions; inability to fulfill basic needs; lack of disaster-related knowledge and experience among midwives; and the overall survival conditions of disaster victims. The disaster caused several psychological effects on midwives, including shock, surprise, sadness, confusion, feelings of inadequacy, insomnia upon returning from the disaster area, nightmares, difficulty adapting, guilt about returning, feelings of helplessness, and experiences of loss and mourning.

This study detailed midwives’ experiences during disasters, difficulties, and barriers to effective care. It is crucial to record midwives’ experiences during disasters and use this information and solutions to prepare for future disasters. Disaster preparedness training for midwives should be planned to increase physical and emotional resilience.

There are numerous factors that impact human health. Sanitary and hygienic conditions in the workplace and living environments, the state of the environment, and nutrition levels play a significant role in determining environmental quality. An integral part is also the organization of effective treatment and preventive health care services for the population. The purpose of this study is to analyze the sanitary and hygienic situation in the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The methodological framework employed general theoretical methods, statistical analysis, and techniques for systematizing information.

During the study, it was determined that in several cities, high levels of respiratory and skin morbidity are recorded, linked to elevated concentrations of dust, ammonia, hydrogen fluoride, and nitrogen dioxide. As a consequence of chemical contamination of drinking water sources, there is an escalation in the incidence of nephritis and hepatitis, an upsurge in the number of toxicosis cases among pregnant women, and congenital anomalies. The sanitary condition of settlements greatly impacts the development of satisfactory living conditions.

Therefore, this research holds significant practical relevance, and the findings can be utilized by specialists in relevant fields to analyze and address the identified problems, as safeguarding public health, development, and improvement of its protection system is currently becoming one of the paramount tasks.

This study was conducted to determine the relationships between nurses’ competency, motivation, and stress levels in disaster management, as well as to shed light on the establishment of effective disaster management programs.

In our research we used a correlational, descriptive, cross-sectional design. The sample of the study was composed of 498 nurses working in Turkey. The “Descriptive and Professional Characteristics and Disaster Experiences of Nurses” form, the “Competencies for Disaster Nursing Management Questionnaire,” the “Perceived Stress Scale,” and the “Nurses Job Motivation Scale” were used in data collection.

Nurses’ disaster management competency and motivation levels were found to be adequate, and their stress levels were found to be moderate. A weak positive correlation was found between disaster management competency and motivation, but a weak negative correlation was found between stress levels. Age, education level, experience level, training in disaster nursing, and knowledge of duties and responsibilities in disasters were associated with significant differences in terms of disaster competency and its dimensions, motivation, and stress levels.

The study found that nurses’ disaster experiences impacted their competency, feeling of preparedness, and stress and motivation levels, and motivation was found to be a predictor of increasing competency.

Augmented reality (AR) is a valuable tool in disaster preparedness training such as tabletop exercises that enhances the exercise by overlaying digital information and virtual objects.

This study intends to develop an application using AR to be used during the exercise.

The data is collected through interviews on the opinions and views of the experts from five main agencies in a disaster response; the National Disaster Management Agency, the Royal Malaysia Police, the Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia, the Ministry of Health, and the Malaysia Civil Defence Department, discussing their duties during a flood scenario. The consensus achieved after series of interviews with the experts, including document reviews guided by National Security Council Directive 20.

The AR approach is created through ‘marker-based’ which use an image recognition to build up an engaging ‘storyline’ of flood scenario. It includes the updates on the changing plot during the exercise using an ‘inject’ meant to progress the plot and provide fresh data to evaluate and react to.

Integrating virtual objects and entities into the tabletop exercise is made possible by AR, where it revolutionises how disaster responders being trained using an approach that more engaging and effective.

While studies have examined the effects of large-scale disasters on disaster-vulnerable individuals, these analyses may not capture the full impact. This study qualitatively explored the impacts of the March 2011 Fukushima triple disaster on patients with breast cancer and their families, aiming to highlight the importance of incorporating family narratives to grasp the full effect of large-scale disasters.

Utilizing the medical records from two hospitals, deceased patients with breast cancer from the disaster period were identified. Relatives were interviewed using a semi-structured approach. Thematic analysis was conducted via the Braun and Clarke method and Taguette transcription software.

Interviews with seven family members of six patients revealed three main themes: the family’s caregiving burden and their deepened bonds with the patient, the patients’ extensive medical challenges and their physical and mental decline, and the shared confusion during the disaster due to resource shortages and evacuation dilemmas.

This study uncovered significant infrastructural issues such as reduced medical support and the heavy caregiving load on families, amidst some strengthened relationships during a time of crisis. Future research should investigate these issues across various disaster contexts, and proactive measures should be implemented to prevent exacerbation of these challenges.
