Self-regulation of emotions is viewed as one of the key skills in various socionomic professions (Kuznetsova & Titova, 2016; Spencer & Spencer, 2008), including psychology. Emotional intelligence (EI) can be seen as a vital competence for counseling psychologists, as well as a factor in an efficient human functional state’s (HFS) self-regulation under stressful work conditions.

This study aims to assess the EI level in psychologists involved in a long-term relief programme for people affected by an industrial accident, and to reveal interrelations between EI and the efficiency of acquisition of new self-regulation skills.

The training course was designed for psychologists (n=15) in order to develop new stress-management counseling skills. It included: progressive relaxation, ideomotor and visualization exercises; autogenic formulae. Data were obtained from HFS evaluation questionnaires (Leonova, Zlokazova, Kachina & Kuznetsova, 2013), and the EI inventory (Manoylova, 2004).

The mean EI level was high among the psychologists, although there were variations. Data confirmed rapid progress in the acquisition of self-regulation skills, and demonstrated a prolonged effect of stress (p=0,052) and fatigue (p<0,001) reduction (Friedman’s test). The EI level showed correlations (Spearman’s test) with HFS measures: by the end of the course psychologists with a higher EI reported higher psychological comfort (p<0,05) and lower acute fatigue (p<0,01) after relaxation exercises.

Although the sample size was small, the data, obtained from described above unique group of counseling psychologists, helped reveal the link between EI and efficient HFS self-regulation.

The Watersports Inclusion Games is an annual event organised by Irish Sailing and partners that provides an opportunity for individuals of all abilities across the physical, sensory, intellectual and learning spectrums and those experiencing barriers accessing mainstream sport to partake in a range of watersports. 79 volunteers from the 2019 cohort responded to a pilot survey to assess the benefits for volunteers at the event.

This project aims to assess this data in the context of current knowledge about the benefits for volunteers in inclusive sport.

Literature review used the PEO keyword framework in medical and psychological databases, as well as grey literature. Data was collected using SurveyMonkey, quantitative data was analysed using Survey Monkey and SPSS, and qualitative themes were analysed using SurveyMonkey and Excel.

Only one article exploring the benefits for volunteers in inclusive watersports was identified during literature review. This pilot survey analysis is the first on this topic in Ireland, and the largest sample of volunteers in inclusive watersport that we are aware of internationally. Thematic analysis finds that volunteers at this event are primarily motivated by altruistic motives, while the benefits they perceive include both personal enjoyment and growth, and seeing the enjoyment of other participants.

This project demonstrates that inclusive watersports can have many benefits for volunteers. The findings of this study can contribute to the evidence base on the benefits of inclusive sport for all those involved, while also identifying an opportunity for further study on volunteerism in inclusive sport, particularly adaptive watersports.

Adolescent transitions to adulthood are a vulnerable phase for the development of mental illnesses. Additionally, there are often disruptions in psychiatric care delivery during the transition phase, potentially leading to a considerable treatment delay with a high risk of early chronification. Thus, the health care system and professionals in both child and adolescent psychiatry and adult psychiatry should be given greater consideration to the transition phase.

The aim of the project ProTransition is the development of an online course for health care professionals to give in-depth knowledge of “transition psychiatry”, practical guidance and to sensitize them for the special challenges and needs of young adults with mental illness.

The online-course is being developed at the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry/ Psychotherapy, Ulm and is expected to start in May 2021. It comprises e.g. special psychopathology of emerging adulthood, clinical interventions for adolescents with mental illness or legal aspects. An innovative and multi-didactical approach with specialized texts, case-studies, online-chats and interviews with experts and young people is applied. Additionally, user satisfaction with the online course will be evaluated.

On the basis of the gained experiences, ideas for new transition-psychiatric treatment models will be derived. The accompanying research will point out the status quo and the course-related increasing knowledge of health care professionals regarding transition psychiatry. First results are expected in November 2021.

As transition psychiatry is facing great difficulties and challenges, professionals should be adequately educated. E-Learning offers a flexible and low-level approach to reach a broad target group.

Mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) held within an academic context continue to develop at an international scale, and continue to show benefits for children, specifically on cognitive functioning and emotional regulation (Theurel, Gimbert, Gentaz, 2018).

The aim of this study is to demonstrate the relevance of implementing MBIs within French elementary school settings, in order to promote mental health, positive pedagogy and quality of life.

This study utilizes the Belgian program “Gestion des émotions par la pratique de la Pleine Conscience” (Emotional regulation using Mindfulness practices) (Deplus, 2015) and compares an experimental group participating in 9 MBI sessions to a control group “waiting list”. An interpretative phenomenological analysis at post-test investigates participant’s perception on the effects of the intervention on familial and school climates.

The results of this study have been highly impacted by COVID19 (confinement).Quantitative results reveal that 33% of the participants (n=6) show a decrease in depressive symptoms, 33% show no change and 33% show a slight increase, post-intervention (T2). Results also suggest a decrease in anhedonia in 50% of the participants. 50% of participants show an improvement with regards to worrying and hypersensitivity. Qualitative analysis puts forth perceived improvements on emotional regulation and mindfulness abilities of participants, which has shown to have positive effects on familial climate.

We estimate that the implementation of such a MBI in a school setting will favour the development of executive functions and emotional regulation, allowing children to develop resilience towards stress and anxious-depressive affects. We also expect the intervention to help develop socio-emotional abilities and well-being in French schools.

Positive psychiatry is the science and practice of psychiatry seeking to promote overall well-being and understand the “positive” aspects of the patient’s life, such as resilience, social connections, and meaning and values in life. While positive psychiatry research has recently blossomed, the field lacks practical ways to integrate these overarching principles into clinical practice. Life review interventions are commonly used in palliative care, spiritual care, and geriatrics, and involve a healthcare team member interviewing a patient about their life.

Our objective is to describe the implementation of a positive psychiatry-informed life story review initiative into medical education, with the goal of creating a structure for medical trainees to see the larger context of patients’ health, understand how past experiences influence current values, and improve patients’ overall well-being.

First- and third-year students at Alpert Medical School of Brown University are required to participate in at least one strengths-based life review with a patient in the community or inpatient setting, transcribe the story, and integrate the story into the electronic health record.

Preliminary results demonstrate high acceptability and perceived development of patient-centered competencies, such as understanding patients as more complete human beings. While this is a low cost and sustainable intervention, barriers include buy-in from medical educators, hospital administrators, and trainees.

To our knowledge, this is one of the first positive psychiatry-informed interventions to be implemented into the required medical curricula. Life story reviews may allow providers to understand the “positive” aspects of patients’ lives and understand their patients better as people.

Attachment styles play important role in managing health behavior. It has been observed in researches that attachment style have relationship with health behavior (Schlack, 2003). If attachment styles are left the way they form habitually it can be harmful, in a study with diabetic patients, people with avoidant attachment style were expected to die within 5 years of disease diagnosis (Ciechanowski et al., 2010).

To assess effect of adult attachment styles on health behavior?

Sample comprised of 300 university students from different private and government universities of Karachi with age range 18 – 35 years. Assessment tools used are relationship questionnaire and wellness behavior inventory scale. Relationship questionnaire is used to identify the dimension of attachment style (Bartholomew & Horowitz, 1991). Wellness behavior inventory was used to identify consistency of healthy behavior activities done on regularly basis (Sirois, 2001). Statistical tests used for descriptive analysis were frequency and percentage and for inferential statistics regression analysis test was used.

According to the attachment styles A, B, C and D most of the study participants fell in healthy weight range, a few were in obese range which is considered unhealthy. Result of regression analysis estimated there is no effect of attachment style on health behavior as p-value was greater than 0.05.

Attachment style is not a good predictor of health behavior solely. As per a few researches in order to study impact of attachment styles other mediating variables that can have effect on health behavior should also be observed such as self-esteem.

Mounting evidence shows that mental training activities aimed at increasing self-awareness and self-regulation can better psychophysical wellbeing, as well as on neurocognitive efficiency. Nevertheless, the commitment required by traditional approaches to such activities often discourages their implementation as prevention tools with elderly users. Integrating traditional interventions and new technologies might help to achieve this goal.

The study aims at evaluating the effects on cognitive control and self-regulation of a mindfulness protocol supported by a wearable neurofeedback device, comparing young-adults and elderly people.

Participants completed a three-week experimental (EXP) or control (CONT) training protocol, with daily sessions of practice. The EXP protocol was based on breathing awareness practices executed with the support of the wearable neurofeedback device. In the CONT protocol, participants completed breathing practices while listening to ambient sounds with no feedback. Stress, anxiety and mood levels, cognitive skills, and physiological markers (EEG and autonomic indices) of neurocognitive efficiency and stress were assessed pre-/post-training.

Both young and elderly participants completing the experimental protocol showed a post-training improvement in executive control, a reduction in perceived stress levels, and an improvement of psychophysiological markers of stress regulation. In addition, young participants presented an improvement of EEG markers of attention regulation, while elderly participants showed an improvement of EEG markers of affective regulation and a reduction of subclinical depressive symptoms.

Findings highlights the potential of integrating traditional interventions and new technologies in order to promote subjective well-being and neurocognitive enhancement, especially with elderly users.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory, demyelinating, and neurodegenerative disease of the central nervous system. This condition is enhanced by stress. In turn, stress symptoms are a risk factor for the onset and progression of MS. However, knowledge about predictors of stress in patients with MS is scarce.

This preliminary study aimed to verify whether the number of relapses, fatigue, physical disability (MS characteristics), experiential avoidance and self-judgment (emotion regulation processes) predict stress symptoms in patients diagnosed with MS.

A convenience sample of 101 patients diagnosed with MS and without other neurological diseases participated in this study. Participants completed the Depression Scale of the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scales-21, Analog Fatigue Scale, World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule-12, Acceptance and Action Questionnaire-II, and Self-Judgment Subscale of the Self-Compassion Scale.

All predictors initially hypothesized and years of education have significant correlations with stress symptoms. Simple linear regression analyses showed that the variables significantly predicted stress symptoms and were, therefore, included in the multiple linear regression model. This model explained 51.8% of the variance of the stress symptoms and showed that years of education, the number of relapses, fatigue, and experiential avoidance significantly predicted those symptoms.

The promotion of mental health mental in patients with MS must develop functional skills to deal with stress induced by years of education (possibly responsible for the degree of awareness about MS and its consequences), recurrence of relapses and fatigue, and should minimize emotion regulation strategies focused on experiential avoidance.

Animal Assisted Interventions (AAIs) are increasingly introduced in pediatric care settings as a mean to promote the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of hospitalized children and adolescents and the humanization of the hospital environment.

The aim of this work was to review published studies implementing AAIs in hospital settings and to assess their effectiveness in reducing stress and pain, ameliorating social behavior, quality of life, and mood in pediatric patients. Reviewed interventions were also evaluated for their effects on caregiver’s stress and burden, as well as on perception of the work environment in hospital staff.

Studies were systematically searched using PubMed, Scopus, ProQuest and Web of Science databases in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. The search was aimed at identifying studies examining the effects of AAIs on behavioral and physiological response to stress in children and adolescents (0-18 years) formally admitted to a hospital for a stay, as well as in those undergoing a visit for treatments or medical examinations.

Of 350 studies screened, 17 were eligible for inclusion. Most of them focused on stress, pain and anxiety reduction in pediatric patients, and used both physiological parameters and behavioral observations/scales. The vast majority of the studies employed dogs. Results show the potential of AAIs to reduce anxiety and behavioral distress in pediatric patients, while acting on physiological measures associated with arousal.

Although further studies of better quality are still needed, the findings of this review may have implications for clinical practices suggesting appropriate planning of AAIs by pediatric healthcare professionals.

With the huge increase of life expectancy in developed countries, new needs for long-term care arise in order to guarantee an active ageing for an increasing older adult population. One way to promote emotional well-being and quality of life in elderly is through socio-educational interventions.

To test the effects of a socio-educational intervention in quality of life and mental health of institutionalized elderly.

This study employed a pretest-posttest design. Measures: Portuguese version of Mental Health Inventory (Ribeiro, 2001) and WHOQOL-OLD (Vilar, Sousa & Simões, 2009). Qualitative assessment was made using a logbook. Participants: 15 institutionalized elderly, 60% females, with mean age of 82.5 years (sd=8.5). The intervention ran for 2 months, with 12 group sessions, 60 minutes each, held twice a week. A nonparametric paired samples tests was conducted to evaluate the impact of the intervention.

After the intervention, results showed a significant increase of total value of mental health (p=.021). Concerning dimensions: significant increase of positive psychological well-being (p=.014), emotional ties (p=.050), positive affect (p=.004), behavioural emotional control (p=.018), and a significant decrease of depression (p=.043). Concerning quality of live, the results showed a significant increase of the mean values of the facets: social participation and intimacy (p=.005; p=.027, respectively).

Overall, the intervention implemented with institutionalized elderly had good results, with significant increase of positive psychological well-being and decrease of depression. Although there was no control group, the results suggest that the socio-educational intervention implemented can contribute to promote mental health in elderly.

Health professionals face an increased risk of developing mental health difficulties due to work-related stress. It has been demonstrated that work engagement has a protective role on mental health from work-related stress. The majority of the research on the psychological impact of job stress among health professionals focused on the work-related stressors or the type of stressors as challenges or hindrances. However, the impact might depend on an individual’s appraisal of challenges and hindrances.

- Examine the effects of job appraisals on mental health. - Establish the role of work engagement as a mediator between them.

An online survey was completed by 196 health professionals and included questionnaires about job appraisals, stressors (variety of tasks, responsibility and cooperation with colleagues), work engagement, anxiety and depression.

Appraising stressors as challenges did not have any direct impact on mental health, whereas hindrance appraisals had a negative influence. Participants who appraised cooperation with colleagues as challenging reported lower levels of depression through higher work engagement (B = − 0.17, 95% CI [− 0.354, − 0.027]). Appraising variety of tasks as a hindrance predicted higher levels of depression through lower work engagement (B = 0.150, 95% CI [0.041, 0.289]). Participants appraising the other two stressors as hindrances were more anxious and depressed through lower work engagement.

The negative psychological impact of hindrance appraisals was persistent, whereas the positive impact of challenge appraisals through work engagement depended on the stressor. Stress interventions may need to consider both the type of appraisal and the type of stressor.

Intergenerational programs involving children and the elderly promote intergenerational interactions and can positively affect physical and mental health, and the quality of life of the elderly.

To test the effects of an intergenerational intervention in social isolation, depressive symptoms and quality of life of the elderly.

This study employed a pretest-posttest design. Measures: Portuguese versions of Geriatric Depression Scale, Lubben Social Networks Scale and WHOQOL-OLD. Participants: 12 elderly, 75% females, with mean age of 80.8 years (sd=8.8) and 20 kindergarten children (65% female) with mean age of 4,1 years (sd=0.79). The intervention ran for 6 weeks, with 11 intergenerational group sessions, each range between 30 and 120 minutes. A nonparametric paired samples tests was conducted to evaluate the impact of the intervention.

After the intervention, when comparing elderly with and without depressive symptoms, results showed significant differences in the total value of quality of life (p=.048) and in the facets: 1) Sensory functioning, 2) Autonomy, 3) Past, present and future activities (p=.003; p=.018; p=.030, respectively). 12,5% of de elderly with depressive symptoms before the intervention no longer have depressive symptoms after the intervention. Regarding social networks, there were no significant differences (p=.576) between the mean values of the two assessments.

The implemented intergenerational program was effective in promoting quality of live and minimized depressive symptoms. After the intervention, the number of the elderly without depressive symptoms have increased and these presented a higher quality of life. Finally, longitudinal studies with a large sample are needed to consolidate results.

The Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training was developed to educate police officers regarding the complexity of mental health (MHI) issues, and better prepare them for crisis encounters with persons with mental illness (PwMI).

To determine if CIT training improves police officers’ knowledge, attitude, and stigma about mental health issues.

A systematic review followed the PRISMA protocol and was conducted on the PubMed database (Figure 1). Search strings were “crisis intervention team training,” “crisis intervention team,” “CIT,” “effectiveness,” and “police.” Inclusion eligibility required primary studies using surveys that measured the CIT training outcomes (i.e., knowledge, attitude, and stigma). Literature/narrative reviews or opinions were excluded.

The comprehensive meta-analysis software version 3.0 was utilized during analysis. Randomized odds ratios using a 95% confidence interval (CI) were obtained. Officers’ scores for knowledge, attitude, and stigma about MHI were taken before and after the survey. The Control group consisted of officers without CIT training. The CIT trained officers displayed an improvement in knowledge (OR 2.35, CI: 1.51– 3.67), attitude (OR 2.55, CI: 1.36–4.78), and stigma (OR 3.11, CI: 1.88–5.17). The results were statistically significant, with a p-value of less than 0.001 (Figure 2).

CIT trained police officers displayed a significant improvement in their knowledge, attitude, and reduced stigma towards PwMI. Although our study displays CIT training’s positive effects, previous studies reported a nullified effect of CIT in reducing arrests and the use of force during police officers encounters with PwMI. Future researchers must explore this gap, mainly focusing on gender and race bias.

Mental health is no doubt a topical conversation at medical school. We noted that whilst many students appreciated the power in talking openly about challenges faced, it was a topic many found hard to approach. In response, we have implemented a peer-led training programme at Bristol Medical School. The aim of the programme is to improve confidence and enable students to recognise and respond to their own, a peer or patient’s distress in a more proactive, supportive and overall effective way. It utilised peer-led, discussion based workshops during the first few months of medical school to achieve this.

To evaluate the role of peer-led mental health training in undergraduate medical education.

The program was piloted in November 2019. T-tests compared 142 participating students’ baseline self-reported understanding and confidence and follow up, as measured on a likert scale (1-5). Qualitative feedback was also welcomed.

Students showed a significant improvement in their self-reported understanding (24%, P<0.05), confidence when supporting a peer (18%, P<0.05) and confidence if faced with a more acute situation (21%, P<0.05). Students expressed particular admiration for the fact that the session was peer led ‘as it emphasised the importance of mental health in…society’.

This programme may be beneficial in creating a stronger community of doctors who are equipped with the confidence and ability to better care for themselves, their colleagues, and patients. Further evaluation is required to determine whether this reduces rate or severity of mental illness in participants or the broader student population.

Ethnolinguistic diversity provides the opportunity to study the relation between the native language, the emotional state, and the well-being of a person. Representatives of different linguistic groups may have psychological advantages in specific socio-cultural situations.

We investigated the interrelation between mental well-being, emotional state, life satisfaction, and belonging to different ethnolinguistic categories in the Russian society.

The measuring instruments included the Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-Being Scale (Tennant et al., 2007), the Scale ofPositive and Negative Experience (SPANE) (Diener et al., 2009), the questionary on life satisfaction. The research project included 894 respondents aged from 14 to 80 (M=24.0; SD=11.7), residents of eight regions, where there are one or several official languages along with Russian.

The results indicate that mental well-being (F = 1.167; p = 0.312) is independent of the respondents’ native language, while the ratio of positive and negative affect is significantly higher (F = 3.164; p = 0.008) among people who indicated the regional language as the native one, compared to those who have two native languages - Russian and regional (MD = -1.529; p = 0.039). Moreover, the general life satisfaction is higher (F = 7.427; p = 0.001) among native speakers of the regional language as compared to those who indicate both Russian and regional languages as their native languages (MD = 0.638; p <0.001).

Differences in the emotional state and life satisfaction along with the absence of differences in mental well-being were revealed in respondents of different ethnolinguistic categories. The reported study was funded by RFBR, project number 17-29-09167.

Since the post-Soviet space is distinguished by a wide ethnolinguistic diversity with Russian language being the basis of identity for a significant part of the population, the role of ethnolinguistic identity in psychological well-being needs deep analysis.

The study explores the relationship between mental well-being and belonging to different ethnolinguistic categories in Russia and Azerbaijan.

The Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-Being Scale (Tennant et al., 2007) was used as a measuring tool. The study involved 90 students, 45 participants from multilingual regions of Russia and 45 Russian-speaking students from Azerbaijan. Both samples included three categories of subjects: indicating Russian (1); one or more regional languages in the Russian sample or Azerbaijani in the sample from Baku (2); two native languages - Russian and one of regional languages or Russian and Azerbaijani (3) - as their native language.

No significant differences were observed in the level of psychological well-being in both Russian (KW = 0.594; p = 0.743) and Azerbaijanian students (KW = 1.535; p = 0.464). However, the level of psychological well-being in Russian students from multilingual regions, who indicate the regional language as their native language, is significantly higher than in Azerbaijani students, whose native language is Russian (U = 55,000; p = 0.045).

The sociocultural context is reflected in mental well-being of the individual, depending on his native language and ethnocultural identity. The reported study was funded by RFBR, project number 17-29-09167.

There are important challenges for the effective inclusion in society of people with severe mental disorders (SMD). The POTENCIAT intervention supports the formation of work cooperatives for the socio-labour inclusion of people with SMD working together with women in vulnerable situations and older adults.

To analyse the implementation process of the first phase of POTENCIAT

According to Nilsen, six components were analysed: implementation object, implementation activities, implementation actors, users, inner context and outer context. A qualitative study was performed during the first phase of the project (12-months). Participant observation and in-depth interviews with key actors, users and fieldwork team were conducted, as well as bibliographic analysis of field notes, meeting minutes and audios/videos of socialization activities. Ethical issues were considered.

The implementation object was positively valued as a response to perceived needs such as users involvement in a participatory approach. Shared decision-making process was emphasized. Implementation activities were accompanied by local teams and were adapted to participants needs and context characteristics (e.g. social distancing). Most users showed high expectations related to the solidarity economic model as well as physical and economic autonomy, which work as a key factor for commitment and retention in the project. A good working environment was recognized and a space for personal fulfillment. Some barriers were recognized, including cultural stigma, auto-stigma, and recruitment in pandemic context.

Early and proper addressing of factors that may positively and negatively affect the implementation process is mandatory to achieve the effective inclusion of people with SMD.

Our Emotional Schemas dictate how we deal with our own emotions, therefore, how we interpret and face different events that occur in our everyday life. Maladaptive schemas have been proven to be at fault for the inability to face different challenges.

This study aims to find the differences in emotional schemas between subjects with history of psychiatric disorder and subjects without a psychiatric disorder.

We realized a case-control study matched for age and gender, and analyzed the answers of 28 subjects (14 women and 14 men) to Leahy Emotional Schema Scale (LESS); 14 of which have a personal history of psychiatric disorders, while the remaining 14 had no such history. The LESS evaluation was part of a bigger study and was addressed to the general population, over 18 years old. The test was applied online, with the informed consent of the subjects.

The mean age of the participants was 40.28±13.98. Out of the 14 subjects with a psychiatric diagnosis, 71,43% have a job, 21,43% are retired and 1% are still studying. There was a significant difference between the two groups regarding the Higher Values dimension of the Emotional Schemas (p=0.0419). Also, the question regarding the feeling of shame when it comes to their own feeling, showed significant difference between the two groups (p=0.0211).

As opposed to the subjects without a history of psychiatric disorder, those who do have a psychiatric diagnosis, feel more often devalued and ashamed, therefore having a lower self-esteem.

The context of infodemic and necessity of preventive behavior (Roy et al., 2020) demands for studies of the role of news in compliance including health priming (Gibbons, 2003, Pechmann, 1999). Especially important is a topic the effect of news about traditional and alternative medicine (Furnham, Forey, 1994) their impact on subjective compliance.

The aim was to study the relationship to medicine and subjective compliance in people with hypochondriac beliefs after priming by negative news about traditional and alternative medicine.

122 healthy adults (56 males, mean age 40.7±13.6) were randomized to conditions (control, negative news about traditional medicine, negative news about alternative medicine); then they read and appraised four news (in two experimental groups one of them was about medicine); filled changes in emotions after reading (PANAS, Carver et al., 1989), Cognitions About Body and Health Questionnaire (Rief et al., 2018), checklist of relationship to medicine and compliance.

Moderation analysis indicates that in people with higher hypochondriac beliefs negative news about alternative medicine lead to lower readiness to use these methods but also to comply with any medical recommendations (p<.01). In people with higher hypochondriac beliefs negative news about traditional medicine decrease readiness to use it but not alternative medicine (p<.01).
