Timely estimation of silage maize protein provides an effective decision to adapt optimized strategies for nitrogen fertilizer management and also harvesting time for farmers. So, this research aimed to investigate whether using vegetative indices (VIs) derived from UAV remotely sensed multispectral (with 520–900 nm wavelengths) imagery and also Soil Plant Analysis Development (SPAD) greenness index can be used to detect the leaf protein concentration (LPC) of silage maize, as a function of various nitrogen rates (0, 50, 100, and 150% of recommended dosage). Results of principal component analysis (PCA) suggested that LPC was highly correlated with leaf greenness index in all developmental stages. In addition, LPC was highly correlated with most of the VIs investigated. A PCA clustering showed the meaningful pattern of N rates. Higher LPC values, VIs, and greenness index were more concentrated in the higher nitrogen (N100% and N150%) sectors. Nitrogen Reflectance Index (NRI) was identified as the most important VIs to monitor and predict LPC in the silage maize field, showing a strong polynomial relationship with LPC in both eight-leaf collar (V8) (R2 = 0.81, p ≤ 0.01) and tasseling (VT) (R2 = 0.98, p ≤ 0.001) stages. In addition, among VIs, the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) demonstrated a significant linear regression relationship with LPC (R2 = 0.80, p ≤ 0.01) in the VT. Findings suggested the high potential of VIs extracted by UAV-taken multispectral imagery and also SPAD proximal sensing to help farmers rapidly diagnose LPC in silage maize, in line with the objectives of precision farming.

A highly diverse range of plantain varieties are cropped in West and Central Africa, and it is essential to enhance knowledge on this diversity to support farmers in their varietal choices. This study aims at proposing a new way to describe a panel of plantain varieties, based on their agronomic and usage potential. The agronomic trait values of nine plantain varieties, including five traditional varieties (Batard, Big Ebanga, Essong, French Clair and Mbouroukou n°3) representative of the diversity of the plantain group, and four plantain-like hybrids (CRBP39, D248, D535 and FHIA21) were recorded at flowering and harvest. The findings revealed very marked inter-varietal variations, in line with the features of plantain morphotaxonomic subgroups, as well as very high intra-varietal variations, especially for the Essong variety. This extent of intra-varietal variation suggests that traditional plantain multiplication methods could favour the emergence of mutations in plantain varieties and hence of high intra-varietal variability. Finally, the monitored agronomic traits were integrated as agronomic and usage potential indicators per variety and morphotaxonomic subgroup, which could support decision-making on plantain varieties.

Poultry manure (PM) has been shown to boost crop productivity. However, little is known about its favorable interactions with wood biochar (B) on sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L.) growth and yield, and soil qualities. Hence, a 2-year field trial was conducted in the southwest Nigeria at two locations (Owo – site A and Obasooto – site B) to co-apply PM and wood B as soil amendments to boost sweet potato productivity and soil quality. The experiment consisted of a 3 × 4 factorial layout with three replications. PM and B significantly reduced soil bulk density and improved porosity and moisture content with their rate of application when compared to the control. As PM and B applications increased from 0 to 10.0 t ha−1 and 0 to 30.0 t ha−1, respectively, soil chemical properties and sweet potato growth and tuber yield increased. Co-application of 10.0 t ha−1 PM and 30.0 t ha−1 B increased tuber yield by 220% compared to treatments without PM or B. Significant synergistic interactions between PM and B were observed for all parameters. In comparison with other treatments, co-applying PM and B to sweet potato soils is a viable sustainable option for increasing sweet potato productivity and soil sustainability.

The North China Plain is an important summer maize/winter wheat rotation area. However, over the years, continued intensive tillage has destroyed the soil aggregate accelerating the mineralization and decomposition of soil organic carbon (SOC), which plays an important role in soil quality, as increased organic carbon storage improves soil fertility and crop yields. Thus, the objective of this study was to explore the comprehensive impact of tillage methods on soil aggregates, aggregate-associated SOC, and carbon sequestration capacity under a regime of straw return. In 2002, we started a 14-year long-term tillage experiment; then in 2016–2017, we tested the following tillage methods, zero tillage (ZT), rotary tillage (RT), subsoiling (SS), and conventional tillage (CT). The results showed that in the 0–10 cm soil layer, tillage methods significantly reduced the proportion of aggregates in the order of 2–0.25 > 5–2 > 0.25–0.053 mm. Additionally, conservation tillage (i.e., SS and ZT) significantly increased the percentage of macroaggregates (0–40 cm) and their SOC content, compared to CT. Additionally, the contribution rate of macroaggregates to SOC was 17.2% and 30.6% higher under SS and ZT than under CT, respectively. Conservation tillage methods improved the carbon sequestration capacity of soil aggregates. Our study provides a theoretical basis for the development of more suitable tillage methods. Furthermore, long-term conservation tillage seemingly protected large aggregates and, SOC, whereby carbon sequestration was enhanced and soil carbon emissions were effectively reduced.

Management strategies such as nitrogen (N) topdressing and clipping can be used to optimize a cover crop for the dual purpose of soil cover and forage. The present study tested oat (Avena sativa) for a holistic provision of soil cover and forage under various levels of clipping frequency and N topdressing. Effects on root and above-ground biomass, acid detergent fiber, neutral detergent fiber, and crude protein (CP) were evaluated. Clipping frequency had four levels, namely clipped only at termination (C1), clipped at 28 days after emergence (DAE) and termination (C2), clipped at 28, 42 DAE, and termination (C3), and clipped at 28, 42, 56 DAE, and termination (C4). Nitrogen topdressing had two levels, namely with (N1) and without (N0) the recommended N topdressing. Increasing clipping frequency reduced the root and aerial biomass and did not affect the forage quality harvested before termination. However, N topdressing increased biomass and CP content across the clipping frequencies. Results suggest clipping thrice combined with N topdressing (C4 + N1) provides the best option to satisfy both soil cover and livestock demands. The treatment (C4 + N1) gave > 2 t ha−1 of biomass during the growing period and 6 t ha−1 at termination which can be used for livestock forage and soil cover, respectively. Clipping thrice without N topdressing (C4 + N0) was the best option for resource-constrained farmers.

In Madagascar, upland rice cropping is constrained by soil acidity and low phosphorus (P) bioavailability. Given their role in plant P nutrition, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) may improve crop yield in nutrient-poor tropical soils. In the Vakinankaratra region, a field experiment was conducted at 908 m asl on an acidic Ferralsol during the 2019–2020 growing season. The aim was to test the ability of four promoted rice varieties to respond to AMF seed-coating inoculation with a commercial strain of Rhizophagus irregularis in the absence or presence of P fertilizer (20 kg ha−1 of P2O5) under no expected nitrogen (N) limitation. In absence of P fertilization, both at tillering and at maturity and irrespective of the rice varieties, AMF inoculation significantly improved plant performance and finally grain yield, grain N, and grain P amounts by an average of 28%, 30%, and 39%, respectively. In contrast, when P fertilizer was supplied, no significant effect of AMF inoculation was observed. Rice growth variables were significantly higher with the application of P fertilizer than with AMF inoculation both at tillering and at maturity. P fertilizer without inoculation provided an average grain yield improvement of 85%. At tillering, mycorrhizal parameters for root colonization assessment were not positively linked with rice growth variables suggesting an early effect of AMF inoculation. We concluded that, with no P fertilization, AMF seed coating inoculation at the field scale significantly improved upland rice plant performance in a limited soil P environment. Our rice genetic variability did not interfere significantly both with mycorrhizal parameters and crop AMF inoculation benefits.

User-oriented research is important in breeding improved genotypes, for developing and validating product concepts (mostly involving trait prioritisation), as well as evaluating breeding products in use situations (mostly involving participatory variety evaluation). This paper examines key aspects that enable cumulative learning in user-oriented research for root, tuber and banana (RTB) crop breeding. We reviewed empirical user-oriented studies on RTB crops published between 1996 and 2020. We examined the ability of user-oriented research to foster cumulative learning by examining four key aspects: spatial and temporal coverage; gender aspects; the range of traits considered and publishing practices as evident in reports and datasets. We conclude that user-oriented studies have received attention in RTB breeding but fall short of enabling cumulative learning. Substantial investments in methodology development and capacity are needed to bring greater coherence to this field and enable cumulative learning about user perspectives to iteratively increase the fit between improved genotypes and user preferences.
