The sliding law is defined as a basal boundary condition for the large-scale bulk ice flow, relating the tangential traction τb, overburden pressure pb, and tangential velocity ub on a smoothed-out mean bed contour. This effective bed is a lower boundary viewed on the scale of the bulk ice flow and is not the physical ice/rock or sediment interface. The sliding relation reflects on the same scale the complex motion taking place in the neighbourhood of the physical interface. The isothermal steady-state ice-sheet analysis of Morland and Johnson (1980, 1982) is applied to known surface profiles from the Greenland ice sheet and Devon Island ice cap, with their corresponding mass-balance distributions, to determine τb, pb, and ub for each case. These basal estimates are used in turn to construct, using least-squares correlation, polynomial representations for an overburden dependence λ(pb) in the adopted form of sliding law τb ═ λ(pb)ub1/m with m ≥ 1.

The two different data sets determine functions λ(pb) of very different magnitudes, reflecting very different basal conditions. A universal sliding law must therefore contain more general dependence on basal conditions, but the two relations determined appear to describe the two extremes. Hence use of both relations in turn to determine profiles compatible with given mass-balance distributions can be expected to yield extremes of the possible profiles, and further to show the sensitivity of profile form to variation of the sliding relation. The theory is designed as a basis for reconstruction of former ice sheets and their dynamics which are related to the two fundamental determinants of surface mass balance and basal boundary condition.

Several aspects of space glaciology are considered in the paper. Estimates of the water content of the Earth, Mars, and the Galilean moons of Jupiter are corrected. A considerable proportion of the total amount of water in the solar system is localized near Jupiter; part of this water is contained as ice in glaciations, glacial caps, and ice crust on the planets. Ice is one of the main components of the surface of some planets. The major amount of ice on Mars is contained in a permafrost layer of mean thickness about 3 km. The model of an ice crust floating on a water mantle is considered for Jupiter’s moon Europa. It is shown that for definite values of certain parameters this crust may be subject to destruction due to the instability of its proper oscillations, which explains the numerous systems of fractures and cracks observed on Europa’s surface. The stress-strain state of such an ice crust is calculated within the framework of a non-linear thermo-elasticity model. The role of short-period temperature variations at Europa’s surface is estimated and the peculiarities of relief observed on this planet are analysed.

A site situated close to the main divide of the Penny Ice Cap, Baffin Island was occupied in 1979 for the purpose of determining the suitability of this ice cap for providing proxy climatic data and other environmental time series for a span of 104 a. A 20 m core was extracted and analysed for stable oxygen isotopes, tritium concentration, pH, electrolytic conductivity, major ion concentrations, and particulate concentration. An adjacent dedicated shallow core was analysed for pollen content to determine if a significant seasonal variation in the pollen rain existed. From these measurements, and from the observations made on the stratigraphic character of the core, the mean net accumulation rate over the approximately 30 year period covered by the core is found to be about 0.43 m water equivalent per year. This is in agreement with a single value determined 26 years earlier at a nearby site (Ward and Baird, 1954). The mean annual temperature in the bore hole was found to be close to −14.4° C, possibly some 2–5 deg warmer than the expected mean annual surface air temperature at the site. This difference is due to the expulsion of latent heat upon freezing of melt water at depth in the snow-pack which gives rise to the many ice layers observed in the core. The percentage thickness of ice layers per year may be correlated with summer temperatures.

Total ice depths were measured using a 620 MHz radar echo-sounder. In the vicinity of the divide, over an area of 1 km2, the ice depths vary from about 460 to 515 m. These values compare favourably with values determined from an airborne radar depth-sounding flight carried out over the ice cap by a joint U.S.–Danish mission operating out of Søndre Strømfjord, Greenland. The data suggest that the ice-cap divide would be a worthwhile location to deep core drill with an expected useful coverage of at least the Holocene period.

In the last decade deposition on lateral moraine embankments of glacier de Tsidjiore Nouve has been re-activated on a large scale. An attempt has been made to reconstruct, from the dimensions of the embankments, average rates of debris accumulation on the moraines during the Neoglacial period. These are compared with rates of deposition over the period 1977–82, calculated from detailed changes in moraine profiles (surveyed by ground- and air-based photogrammetry) and measured rates of ice-margin ablation. At present total output of sediment, by marginal deposition and transport by melt-water streams, from glacier de Tsidjiore Nouve is in the order of 6400–9500m3/a; this suggests the possibility of a high average erosion rate within the glacier catchment of 1.55–2.29 mm/a.

A model of a non-linearly viscous ice sheet is used to investigate the influence of net mass-balance pattern, basal boundary condition, and subglacial topography on the size and shape of ice sheets. The aim is to enable geological evidence of the extent of former ice sheets to be used as indicators of palaeoclimate. A series of curves are presented showing the relationships between ice-sheet span, net mass balance, and equilibrium-line altitude (ELA) for zero and complete isostatic compensation. These are applicable to a very wide range of basal boundary conditions. The way in which they can be used to reconstruct net mass-balance gradients for former ice sheets is demonstrated. Changes in the basal boundary condition only have a strong influence on glacier span when they occur in the terminal zone. Ice-sheet expansion and contraction is not merely accompanied by changes in snow-line elevation, but also by changes in the net mass-balance gradient. The combinations of these required to cause ice-sheet expansion and contraction are analysed. A non-linearly viscous model for ice suggests that ice-sheet volume changes may not be a simple function of their change in areal extent.

Airborne radio echo-sounding of Spitsbergen glaciers during 1980 used 60 MHz SPR1 Mk IV equipment. On several glaciers results showed unambiguous bottom returns at depths 2–3 times those reported in previous Soviet echo-sounding at 440 and 620 MHz. Comparison of 60 MHZ records and independent gravity-surveyed ice thickness for two glaciers agreed to within 10%, whereas Soviet ice thicknesses were only 30–60% of gravity depths. Soviet bed echoes often coincided closely with an internal reflecting horizon recorded by the SPRI Mk IV system, and it is shown that Soviet U.H.F. equipment failed to penetrate to the true glacier bed on a number of ice masses (e.g. Finsterwalderbreen, Kongsvegen, Negribreen). This was probably due to increased absorption and scattering at higher radio frequencies, related to the inhomogeneous nature of Spitsbergen glaciers, which are often at or near the pressure-melting point. Both 60 MHz and U.H.F. equipment seldom recorded bed echoes in ice-cap accumulation areas (e.g. Isachsenfonna), where firn soaking during summer and 10 m temperatures of zero degrees have been observed. An isolated internal reflecting horizon was recorded on many glaciers. It is unlikely to be a moraine layer, but may be related to ice with a water content of 1–2% observed at a similar depth (115 m) in a drill core from Fridtjovbreen.

In 1983 three directional surveys were made in the bore hole from which a deep ice core was obtained in the summers of 1979–81. The inclination and azimuth of the bore hole were measured on three surveys, temperature was included on two surveys, fluid pressure and hole diameter on one of the surveys. Fluid-pressure measurements show that the ice-overburden pressure was undercompensated in the upper few hundred meters and overcompensated at the bottom of the hole. Diameter measurements show closure in the upper portion and expansion near the bottom beginning at the transition from the Holocene to Wisconsin ice at 1784 m. The hole expansion and increase in inclination correlate with dust and silt content in the Wisconsin ice. Changes in azimuth are due to flow of the ice and are consistent with the direction of flow at the surface. Temperature measurements show that the hole is at or near equilibrium. The gradient of 0.012 K/m below 1400 m is less than the 0.018 K/m at Camp Century. There is a slight reduction in gradient near the bottom from internal friction in the silty ice.

Radio-echo returns from internal reflectors were monitored for three weeks during surge motion on Variegated Glacier, Alaska in July 1982. A monopulse transmitter with 3 MHz center frequency was fixed on the glacier surface near the equilibrium line. Data were recorded on magnetic tape approximately three times daily and contain both amplitude and phase information. The frequency spectrum of returned radiation from englacial scatterers shows peaks in the 12 to 30 MHz range which places constraints on the size and geometry of the scatterers. Timing of variations in the amplitude and frequency of returned radiation were found to coincide with changes in glacier velocity, basal water pressure, and surface melt rate. These changes in the echo pattern are interpreted in terms of the redistribution of water in englacial channels and cavities connected to the bed some distance down-glacier. This connection has large hydraulic resistance compared to a bore hole connected vertically to the bed. The inflow of water to the cavities from surface melt and rain and the drainage are generally in equilibrium except in times of changed surface input and during surge pulses. In the latter case, water may fill these cavities due to increased pressure at the bed associated with the motion pulse. The information obtained is therefore complementary to bore-hole water pressure levels but cannot duplicate it. This is apparently due to fundamental differences in the hydraulics of the natural cavity and conduit system, and a bore hole connected vertically to the bed.

Glaciological data collected from Taylor Glacier have been used to assess aspects of the dynamics and thermal regime of the glacier. Mass-balance studies suggest that the glacier is in near equilibrium. The thermal condition of the basal ice over much of the ablation area was calculated from estimates of the geothermal heat influx and measurements of near-surface ice temperatures, ice velocities, and ice thickness. It was found that, in as much as 50% of the lower ablation area, the basal ice may be melting.

Glaciological estimates of the ice supply to George VI Ice Shelf are obtained by integrating the accumulation over the catchment. The basal melt (or possible shelf thickening) rates for the ice shelf are calculated by balancing the accumulation with calving and melting. We calculate an average equilibrium melt rate for the ice shelf of 2 m a −1. If the ice shelf is in mass balance it alone provides 53 km3a −1 melt from its base compared to a total for Antarctica of only 320 km3a −1.

The mean oxygen isotope composition of recent accumulation on the catchment is determined by using accumulation and isotope data, supplemented by temperature measurements and a close empirical relationship between isotope ratio and temperature. The catchment has a mean isotope ratio of −20.8‰ relative to SMOW.

Oceanographic work has previously shown that the sea-water under the ice shelf at the north of George VI Sound is Warm Deep Water modified by melting ice. The melting ice has an isotope ratio of −20.3‰. The good agreement in isotope ratios suggest that the melting ice is from the catchment and because the basal ice of George VI Ice Shelf represents accumulation over the last few millennia the implication is that there has been no systematic change in the isotope composition of the accumulation during this period. This implies no secular change in either the elevation or the climatic temperature of this part of the ice sheet.

A frozen englacial band of current-bedded silts, sands, and gravels were observed close to the snout of the temperate glacier Leirbreen. Little-disturbed sedimentary structures indicated a deltaic origin, the lack of disturbance showing that the sediments were frozen prior to their incorporation by the glacier and did not suffer shearing during glacial transport. It was concluded that they accumulated originally in a subglacial pool when the glacier was more extensive than today. Subsequent thinning of the glacier during recession allowed penetration of winter cooling to the base and freezing of subglacial sediments. The resulting layer of frozen sediment was protected from summer thawing by the overlying glacier and might therefore have been subject to further increase in thickness during successive winters. Incorporation of the frozen sediment band into the glacier resulted from compressive flow against the marginal zone of cold-based ice, leading to the development of thrust planes which penetrated through the glacier and into the frozen subglacial material. Shearing along such a thrust plane immediately below the frozen sediment layer, brought it through the glacier to the surface in a relatively undisturbed state.

Georesistivity soundings have been carried out at four sites in the Antarctic Peninsula. The objective of the work was to investigate the electrical behaviour of ice from an area where substantial melting occurs in summer and from contrasting thermal regimes. Electrical measurements made at three sites along a flow line within George VI Ice Shelf reveal that:

• (a) the resistivity of deep ice is similar to that of other Antarctic ice shelves,

• (b) the resistivity of the ice-shelf surface, which is affected by the percolation and refreezing of melt water, is similar to that of deep ice and hence the ice is polar in character.

A compilation of published resistivities of deep ice from polar regions shows that the range of resistivities is very narrow (0.4 –2.0) x 105 Ω m between –2 and – 29°C, irrespective of the physical setting and history of the ice. Typically, resistivity is within a factor of two of 80 kΩ m at –20° C with an activation energy of 0.22 eV. In contrast, the resistivity of surface ice at Wormald Ice Piedmont, where the ice is at 0°C throughout, is two orders of magnitude higher and falls at the lower end of the range of resistivities for temperate ice.

A mathematical model for the formation of perched blocks on glaciers due to differential ablation is developed by considering energy balances. The model is applied to naturally positioned rocks on Bersærkerbræ, Greenland. The model predicts correctly whether a rock will perch or sink in eleven out of twelve cases. For artificially positioned small rocks of mean dimension 0.2 m, the model has a 53% success rate. The reduced performance is probably due to the thicknesses of the rocks being of similar magnitude to the range of relief of the glacier surface.

Variations in dissolved cations, total alkalinity, sulphate, and field pH are recorded for samples of precipitation, supraglacial melt, and bulk melt waters (those emerging at the portal) from Fjallsjökull (south-east Iceland). The composition of supraglacial melt indicates derivation from precipitation by the acquisition of solutes from the weathering and dissolution of rock debris, in a system open to atmospheric carbon dioxide. Bulk melt waters have variable compositions, approaching saturation with calcite, which can be derived from supraglacial melt water by continued solute acquisition in a system closed to atmospheric carbon dioxide. Solute–discharge relationships suggest that chemical evolution of the bulk melt waters occurs when aggressive englacial waters are mixed with the solute and sediment-rich subglacial component. Simple mixing behaviour occurs over intermediate discharges as long as variations in the extent of post-mixing evolution are small compared to changes in the mixing ratio.

Two holes were drilled to depths greater than 300m in the Antarctic ice sheet, near Cape Folger on the Law Dome. The holes underwent considerable closure below 250m with localized strain-rates as high as 1 to 1.5×10−6 s−1. The closure observed in holes was non-uniform and occurred in zones 0.5 to 3 m wide. These Zones parallel the flow plane in the ice mass and are associated with a distinct domainal structure. High-closure zones are characterized by interlocking and irregular-shaped ice grains with many sub-horizontal c-axes and only occasional c-axis clusters at a high angle to the flow plane. Low-closure zones contain tabular grains with the long dimension parallel to the flow plane, abundant deformation features and a predominance of c-axes oriented at a high angle to the flow plane. The relationship between closure rate and c-axis fabric is attributed to marked plastic flow by intracrystalline slip on the basal plane to produce higher closure in areas where there is a greater variation in c-axis orientation. This deformation is attributable to overburden pressure and hence is related to depth, and is independent of shear within the main body of the ice mass.

Variations in dissolved cations, total alkalinity, sulphate, and field pH are recorded for subglacial melt and bulk melt waters (those emerging from the portal) at Argentière (France), in peak and recession flow conditions. Calcium and bicarbonate are the major ions and the bulk melt waters are demonstrated to have acquired solutes by weathering and dissolution in a system open to atmospheric carbon dioxide. Subglacial melt waters have closed-system characteristics, are close to saturation with calcite and quartz, and must be in near-equilibrium with weathered particulates. Recession-flow bulk melt waters are chemically similar to subglacial melt but have open-system characteristics, either due to re-equilibration with the atmosphere for ground-water mixing.

Researchers have analyzed various properties of drumlins within individual drumlin fields in order to provide evidence to help in identifying the processes involved in drumlin formation. One property which has been examined is the spatial distribution of drumlins within a field. Traditionally, in such endeavours the individual drumlins have been represented as points and their distribution examined using techniques of point-pattern analysis. We suggest that not only is such a representation inappropriate at this scale, it also introduces statistical bias which makes the results of such analyses questionable. Consequently, we propose an alternative approach which involves representing individual drumlins as areal phenomena and considering their pattern as a two-phase mosaic. The advantages of such an approach are discussed and it is illustrated by applying it to two different drumlin fields.

Recent theoretical studies of glacier hydrology have assumed that subglacial conduits are completely filled with water under steady-state conditions. This, however, is not necessarily the case. Where discharges are larger than a few tens of liters per second and the down-glacier slope of the bed is more than a few degrees, the potential energy released by water descending this slope may be capable of melting the walls of a subglacial conduit many times faster than the conduit can close by plastic flow of the ice. As a result, the pressure in such tunnels may normally be atmospheric, or possibly even at the triple-point pressure if there is no open connection to the glacier surface. Simple calculations suggest that such pressures in subglacial conduits may be more common than heretofore anticipated.

The positions of such “open” conduits may be unstable to small perturbations in discharge or ice velocity. This is because the mechanical energy available in excess of that needed to balance closure can instead offset the general flow of the ice. Conduits can thus trend diagonally across the direction of ice flow. If an increase in the angle which such a conduit makes with the ice flow direction also results in an increase in slope of the conduit, more mechanical energy will become available, resulting in a positive feedback process.

Subglacial channels at atmospheric pressure may influence the origin and morphology of certain glacial landforms, such as eskers and “plastically-molded” features.

Chemical models for the evolution of bulk melt waters can be constructed by assuming that rock mineral weathering and solute acquisition are controlled by carbonate equilibria. Different open- and closed- system models are defined by variations in the rates of weathering relative to the rate of hydrogen-ion supply by the dissolution and dissociation of CO2, and can be recognized by characteristic pH and ∑+ relationships. The observed and inferred compositions of englacial and subglacial melt suggest that mixing is unlikely to be conservative and that closed-system conditions result where post-mixing weathering reactions occur. The final composition of bulk melt waters is determined by the mixing ratio between englacial and subglacial melt, the extent of post-mixing evolution, and opportunity for mixing with ground waters or re-equilibration with the atmosphere.

The relationship between synoptic-scale atmospheric circulation and glacier mass balance in the Cordillera of south-western Canada is investigated. Objective synoptic typing techniques are applied to glaciometeorological data from Peyto Glacier, Alberta, and Sentinel Glacier, British Columbia, and to climatological data from nearby weather stations. Two scales of 500 mbar synoptic weather maps are analyzed and compared. One is smaller with high-wavenumber patterns, the other is larger with more general patterns.

The results demonstrate that the mass balance of Peyto and Sentinel Glaciers are related to the 500 mbar patterns. Synoptic types with cyclonic curvature favor glacier accumulation, while anticyclonic types inhibit build-up of the regional snow-pack. Ablation is suppressed by synoptic types associated with cloudy days and/or low temperatures, and is enhanced by types associated with warm, sunny days. Furthermore, findings suggest that both the accumulation and ablation of Sentinel Glacier are controlled by small-scale, high-wavenumber synoptic patterns. Conversely, Peyto Glacier accumulation is more closely associated with large-scale patterns, suggesting that high-frequency mid-tropospheric oscillations embedded within the slow-moving baroclinic zones associated with long-wave disturbances may be dampened by the rough topography of the Canadian Cordillera. Ablation is predicted poorly by both scales at Peyto.
