A module M over a ring R is κ-projective, κ a cardinal, if M is projective relative to all exact sequence of R-modules 0 → A → B → C → 0 such that C has a generating set of cardinality less than κ. A structure theorem for κ-projective modules over Dedekind domains is proven, and the κ-projectivity of M is related to properties of ExtR (M, ⊕ R). Using results of S. Chase, S. Shelah and P. Eklof, the existence of non-projective и1-projective modules is shown to undecidable, while both the Continuum Hypothesis and its denial (Plus Martin's Axiom) imply the existence of a reduced И0-projective Z-module which is not free.

A finite variety is a class of finite groups closed under taking subgroups, factor groups and finite direct products. To each such class there exists a sequence w1, w2,… of words such that the finite group G belongs to the class if and only if wk(G) = 1 for almost all k. As an illustration of the theory we shall present sequences of words for the finite variety of groups whose Sylow p-subgroups have class c for c = 1 and c = 2.

It is shown that non-trivial relations between certain values of the dilogarithm function can be obtained through the asymptotic comparison of coefficients of the expressions which appear in the Rogers-Ramanujan and Andrews-Gordon identities.

In this note we study the boundary behavior of meromorphic functions in bounded plane regions along Green's lines. As applications we obtatin extensions of Lohwater's theorems and Seidel's theorems concerning radial cluster sets.

Sufficient conditons are given for the chaotic behaviour of difference equations defined in terms of continuous mappings in Rn. These conditions are applicable to both difference equations with snap-back repellors and with saddle points. They are applied here to the twisted-horseshoe difference equation of Guckenheimer, Oster and Ipaktchi.

A short and easy proof that the minimum number of generators of the nth direct power of a non-trival finite group of order s having automorphism group of order a is more than logsn + logsa, n > 1. On the other hand, for non-abelian simple G and large n, d(Gn) is within 1 + e of logsn + logsa.

We discuss the problem of constructing large graceful trees from smaller ones and provide a partial answer in the case of the product tree Sm {g} by way of a sample of sufficient conditions on g. Interlaced trees play an important role as building blocks in our constructions, although the resulting valuations are not always interlaced.

Frames have been defined as a certain type of generalization of Room square. Frames have proven useful in the construction of Room squares, in particular, skew Room squares.

We generalize the definition of frame and consider the construction of Room squares and skew Room squares using these more general frames.

We are able to construct skew Room squares of three previously unknown sides, namely 93, 159, and 237. This reduces the number of unknown sides to four: 69, 87, 95 and 123. Also, using this construction, we are able to give a short proof of the existence of all skew Room squares of (odd) sides exceeding 123.

Finally, this frame construction is useful for constructing Room squares with subsquares. We can also construct Room squares “missing” subsquares of sides 3 and 5. The “missing” subsquares of sides 3 and 5 do not exist, so these incomplete Room squares cannot be completed to Room squares.

We give a short proof that skew Room squares exist for all odd sides s exceeding 5.

Some generalizations of Sperner's theorem and of the LYM inequality are given to the case when A1,… At are t families of subsets of {1,…,m} such that a set in one family does not properly contain a set in another.

Characterisations of the distribution of a non-negative random variable are sought for which the Liapunov moment inequality is extended to give inequalities between inverse powers of moment ratios, which are known as mean sizes in considerations of particle size distributions. A solution is found for continuous distributions, and the conditions applied to a number of well-known distributions. A further class of distributions is considered for which the new inequalities hold but the inequality direction is reversed for some orders of the moments. The study involves examination of the signs of the third central moments of a family of distributions, obtained by a log transformation, from the weighted, or moment, distributions induced by the non-negative random variable.

We show that the problem of settling the existence of an n × n Hadamard matrix, where n is divisible by 4, is equivalent to that of finding the cardinality of a smallest set T of 4-circuits in the complete bipartite graph K n, n, such that T contains at least one circuit of each copy of K2,3 in Kn, n.

We determine necessary and sufficient conditions for the multiplier representations of a discrete group to be type I. This result extends the corresponding result for ordinary representation given by Kaniuth in [4].

Let α1,…, αn be non-zero albegraic numbers and let l1(α1),…ln(αn) denote arbitrary fixed values of the logarithms of α1,…n, respectively Given that l1(α1),…ln(αn) are linearly dependent over Q, the existence of non-trival dependence relation between these numbers with integer coefficients of low absolute values can be proved. Existing results of this kind give bounds for the absolute values of the coefficients which are expressions in the degree D = [Q(α1…αn): Q], the heights of α1,…αn and the magnitudes of the logarithms involved.

Every irreducible ordinary character in a p-block of a finite metabelian group is of height 0 if and only if the defect group of the p-block is abelian.
