Leisler's bat Nyctalus leisleri was studied at sites around Bristol and Kent in southern Britain. Its diet was studied by faecal analysis, and habitat use was monitored by radio-telemetry and time-expanding bat-detectors. The diet, which varied between the two sites and also with the season, consisted primarily of small Nematoceran Diptera plus smaller numbers of Coleoptera and Lepidoptera. Foraging ranges were relatively large – bats flew a mean maximum distance of 4.2 km from the roost. Minimum area convex polygons enclosed an average of 7.4 km2, but were up to 18.4 km2. Bats significantly preferred foraging in areas of woodland and along scrub-lined roads in Kent, but over pasture around Bristol. Urban and arable areas were avoided at both sites. Bat-detector transects showed a significant preference for bats to forage along woodland margins.

The pattern of daily activity of the Eurasian lynx Lynx lynx L. was studied by radio-telemetry in the Białowieża Primeval Forest (eastern Poland). Radio-tracking of 18 lynx was done by 24-h continuous observations and by sampling on a daily basis. Lynx were active mostly at night. There was generally one peak of activity between 15:00 and 07:00 which, however, decreased slightly between 20:00 and 22:00. On average, lynx were moving for 6.5 h/day. In males, 73% of locomotory activity occurred at night, whereas females were active as long during the daylight as during the night. Movement bouts of females were shorter than those of males (1.1 h vs 2.1 h) but more frequent (4.2 vs 3.0 bouts/day). General patterns of activity of females with and without kittens were similar. However, females with kittens were active twice as long per day than non-reproducing females. In May–August (intensive care for kittens), reproducing females were active 26% longer than in September–April. Non-reproducing females showed the opposite pattern; they were active 60% less in May–August compared with September–April. Locomotory activity of adult males was 30–70% longer in January–March (mating season) than in other seasons. The pattern of lynx activity was shaped predominantly by searching for and consuming large prey. The lynx were active for the longest time during the days when they searched for prey but made no kill (12.5 h/day on average) and for the shortest time on the first day after killing a deer (1.6 h/day). Their moving activity increased steadily in the following days, reaching 6.8 h/day on the fourth day of consuming a killed deer. Ambient temperatures and rainfall did not significantly affect lynx activity, but there was little movement most of the time in heavy rain, and all day when the temperature was above 30 °C.

Life-history traits of Rana temporaria were studied in an alpine French population and in the literature. In the living frogs, mean adult body length was greater in females than in males. Sexual dimorphism in body length was 0.109 using Lovich & Gibbon's (1992) formula, but tended to decrease with age. Age of adult frogs was assessed by skeletochronology, and age distribution was not significantly different between the sexes (range 4–15 years in males, 5–12 in females). Adult survival rate was about 0.80 in both sexes. Once maturity was reached, the total expected longevity was 6.1 years in males and 5.5 years in females. Age and body length were positively correlated in both sexes. The growth coefficient (K) was 0.47 in males, and 0.55 in females, mainly reflected as faster female growth between metamorphosis and maturation. Growth rate generally decreased before sexual maturity was reached. On average, females matured 1 year later than males. Newly metamorphosed froglets averaged 16.1 mm. When combined with published data from 12 European populations of R. temporaria, the following general patterns emerge. Mean adult body length is significantly greater in females than in males, and mean body length at maturity shows the same trend. Variation in mean age at maturity and in longevity are considerable among populations, but there is no consistent trend of difference between the sexes. Body length and age are correlated between males and females, i.e. populations with long and old males also have long and old females. Mean adult body length, mean body length at maturity, age at maturity, and longevity all increase with decreasing activity period. Adults exposed to a short activity period grow slower but attain a greater final length. Sexual dimorphism in body length generally increases as activity period gets shorter. Polygons describing norms of reaction for maturation in an age–body length space are similarly oriented in both sexes, but with a wider range in age for females. This is due to an older age at maturity for females in populations with a short activity season. Mean age and length at maturity are significantly correlated in females, but not in males, partly supporting the hypothesis that this species has a flexible pattern of development. Observed patterns are compared with predictions from life-history theory, paying attention to all life stages and environmental variation.

Life-history data for 63 species from the mammalian order Insectivora have been collated from the literature. These data were analysed for covariation and for correlations with body mass, brain mass and mass-specific resting metabolic rate. An independent contrasts method has been used to remove the effect of phylogeny. Due to uncertainties surrounding their evolutionary relationships, 22 different phylogenies of insectivores have been used as a basis for comparative analysis. The results show that several key correlations between life-history variables are only significant when certain phylogenies are used, highlighting the problems of such analyses when the phylogeny used is inaccurate. After removing the effect of phylogeny, relatively few significant correlations remain. Insectivores that have a high body mass have relatively lower metabolic rates, longer lifespans and longer gestation lengths. There is some support for a fast–slow continuum in insectivore life-history evolution: there are some significant positive correlations between measures of growth rates (e.g. gestation length and age at weaning) and lifespan, and some negative correlations between growth rates and measures of reproductive output. It is suggested that the seasonality of life of many insectivores may have played an influential role in the evolution of the group, in particular in delaying the onset of sexual maturity. There is little indication that brain size influences life-history evolution in this order, but metabolism may play an important role. The energetic requirements of maintaining high metabolic rates in small mammals such as insectivores may be constraining life histories to a greater extent than occurs in larger mammals. This effect may have obscured the relationship between metabolic rate and life histories in wider inter-order analyses. Finally, there is considerable evidence that sex differences play a large role in shaping insectivore evolution, and it is suggested that this factor must be considered more often in future studies of mammalian life histories in general.

The Cerrado biome is a complex of open forests, gallery forests and savanna vegetation that harbours about 60 species of small mammals. Despite the frequent occurrence of fire in this habitat, few studies have analysed its effects on the small mammal communities in the Cerrado. The purpose of this study was to compare small mammal communities of two Cerrado areas with different fire frequencies (2–3 years or more than 18 years since the last fire). Species diversity, species composition, and relative abundance of the most common species of these communities were analysed in both areas before and after fire. One trapping grid was established in each of the two areas. These areas were sampled monthly or bi-monthly during 1 year before and 1 year after prescribed fires. Both areas had communities with similar species composition, but the protected site had more species, before and after fire (seven and eight, respectively), than the frequently burned site (five and six species, respectively). Both sites showed significant post-fire changes for a short time period (3 months), but only the area that had been protected against fire for more time showed significant post-fire changes in relative abundance of the most common species (the murid rodents Bolomys lasiurus, Calomys callosus, C. tener, Oryzomys subflavus, and Thalpomys cerradensis) for the 1 year following fire. Overall diversity tended to be greater in the protected site both before and after fire. Species composition and diversity indices of the small mammal communities were relatively unaffected by the fires. Thalpomys cerradensis, however, appeared to use only areas that burn frequently and C. callosus showed an immediate post-fire increase in population size in both areas, contrasting with a simultaneous decrease in number of B. lasiurus.

A population of 560 individually recognizable European fallow deer (Dama dama) was studied in Phoenix Park, Dublin, Ireland, during the rut in order to examine buck fighting technique in relation to age and rank. The percent usage and association among behavioural elements used were analysed in 162 fights and 82 sparrings. During fight sequences, high-ranking bucks tend to use a higher percentage of low-risk behaviours (all behaviours which do not involve antler contact), especially when they interact with lower-ranking deer. Fights between combatants of the same rank class show a higher use of high-risk behaviours (characterized by antler contact), and cluster analysis of a preceding–following matrix revealed that high-risk behaviours are closely associated with each other in these interactions. During sparrings, the low intensity of the interaction allows the deer to test their ability and strength using a higher percentage of behaviours which are generally considered high-risk, without risking injury. The data suggest that the percent usage and the sequences of behavioural elements performed in agonistic interactions are affected by deer rank, probably in relation to the different risks and benefits that different hierarchical positions can offer.

In May 1998, an expedition into northern Myanmar obtained detailed descriptive data on a new species of muntjac called the leaf deer, first discovered on a survey the previous year and characterized primarily by its diagnostic DNA compared to other muntjac species. Weights, measurements, and physical data were obtained from 12 freshly killed leaf deer, along with partial measurements from 90 head pieces of leaf deer found in village huts. Except for the diminutive, unbranched antlers on males, averaging 3.2 cm long, older male and female leaf deer were similar in size and appearance, with average weights of 12.1 kg and 11.8 kg for males and females, respectively. When compared with other species, leaf deer are one of the smallest, and perhaps one of the most primitive, extant muntjacs. Two of the most distinguishing characteristics of this new species are the relatively long, equal-sized canines in both older adult males (average 2.4 cm long) and older adult females (average 2.2 cm long), and the lack of spotting on the coats of a newborn and two juveniles estimated to be < 2 months old. All older males (n = 3) and 40% of older females (n = 5) had healed wounds on one or both ears. These wounds, in addition to the large canines in both sexes, may indicate that females as well as males compete actively for resources. Although still relatively abundant throughout mid-elevation dense evergreen forests, between the northern extremities of the Mai Kha and Mali Kha Rivers in north Myanmar, the currently known distribution of the leaf deer is outside any protected areas. Persistent hunting by local people with snares, dogs, and crossbows for a thriving market trade in deer leather, have caused noticeable decreases in numbers of leaf deer captured over recent years and could threaten the future survival of this new species.

We compared the underwater vocalizations of harp seals Pagophilus groenlandicus Erxleben, 1777 recorded during the breeding season at three locations: Jan Mayen Island (north of Iceland); Gulf of St Lawrence; and the ‘Front’ ice east of Labrador. The three herds shared 17 call types. The Jan Mayen herd had one call type not found in the Gulf or Front. One of the Gulf and Front call types was not found at Jan Mayen. Based on ANOVA post hoc pairwise comparisons between locations, the three herds exhibited a similar number of within-call type differences in duration, number of elements, start pitch and end pitch. There were no differences in proportional usage of call types between the Gulf and Front herds but both differed in a similar manner from those of the Jan Mayen herd. These findings support tagging studies that indicate that the Gulf and Front herds may be interbreeding and both are reproductively isolated from the Jan Mayen herd. We found no evidence of acoustic adaptation to the site-specific ice and environmental conditions associated with the three study locations.

Leisler's bats Nyctalus leisleri, from two nursery colonies were radio-tracked from April to August in 2 years. They commuted directly to foraging sites up to 13.4 km away at speeds often exceeding 40 km h-1. Except during lactation, individuals occasionally day-roosted away from the nursery in buildings or hollow trees. These were also sometimes used as night roosts, especially during rain, which also stimulated return to the nursery. On most nights the first flight lasted the longest. During preparturition, when distances from roost to foraging site were greatest, and time spent flying per night (tF) was least, there was often only one flight, with a second towards dawn on warmer nights, and occasionally a third. After parturition, in June, tF and the number of flights (NF) increased up to weaning, corresponding to rising energy demands. But distances to foraging sites fell, rising only slightly in postlactation, presumably because insects, and thus feeding patches, were more abundant than in preparturition. NF fell to preparturition levels after lactation. Exploratory behaviour by juveniles intensified with time – distances to feeding sites, tF and the total distance flown each night all increased; the distance flown each night was eventually greater than any recorded for adults. Roosting away from the nursery was also more common. Before dispersal, there were extended migrations by juveniles outside the summer range of the adults. Distances moved by two dispersed juveniles exceeded 34 km. Two-thirds of the recorded foraging time was over pasture or drainage canals. Foraging over other habitats, particularly lake and conifer forest, was greatest in preparturition. Other habitats foraged included lights, estuary, stream, beach and dunes.

The selection of roost cavities by the threatened New Zealand long-tailed bat Chalinolobus tuberculatus was examined in unmodified temperate southern beech Nothofagus rainforest in Fiordland, New Zealand. We radio-tracked 73 bats during spring–autumn of 1993–1997 to 155 day roosts, all of which were in trees. One hundred and forty-nine roosts were in cavities: 84 in live trunks, 33 in dead trunks, 32 in large branches (seven in dead branches, 25 in live); and the remaining six (occupied by solitary bats) were beneath loose bark. We compared characteristics of the 84 roost cavities in live trunks with 57 random available cavities also in live trunks. Cavities used by C. tuberculatus were not a random subset of available cavities. In comparison to available cavities, bat roosts were all located in knot hole cavities, were high from the ground, and had little surrounding vegetation. All roosts were dry inside. Bats used a higher proportion of cavities which had medium sized entrances and internal cavities, and thicker cavity walls. A logistic regression model incorporating nine cavity variables classified roost and available cavities correctly 97% and 91% of the time, respectively. Distance to the nearest vegetation, cavity condition (wet or dry inside), height from the ground, and to a lesser extent internal cavity height, explained significant proportions of the variation between roost and available cavities. Bats changed roost sites virtually every day and it appeared that suitable cavities were abundant in the unlogged forests of the study area. It is unlikely that modified forests and forests managed for timber production contain such a large pool of potential roosting cavities.

European rabbit Oryctolagus cuniculus abundance was evaluated relative to habitat variables within two zones in Cadiz Province (south-east Spain), 2 years after the spread of rabbit viral haemorrhagic disease (RVHD). The study areas were low-lying regions of mixed pasture/agriculture, Mediterranean forest and matorral, west (Zone A) and east (Zone B) of the Sierra de Cadiz mountain chain. A total of 111 sites was selected to sample all existing habitat types. Relative rabbit density in each site was estimated using a pellet count method in one 50×2 m transect. Mean pellet densities were 21.05 pellet m-2 in Zone B and significantly lower, 5.85 pellets m-2 in Zone A. Physical variables, such as vegetation characteristics (density, height and patchiness of cover-layer vegetation, etc.), topographical characteristics and human influences, cover-layer vegetation species (woody stemmed shrub species or trees forming dense stands), and ground-layer vegetation species (herbaceous species forming a low-lying layer) were determined within transects. In addition to these variables, soil types, rock type and land form, as well as the presence of aquifers, irrigation, and the proximity of rivers, were determined for each site. Significantly higher pellet densities were found in mixed grassland/matorral and cork oak/matorral than in all other habitats. Pellet density was negatively correlated with density of ground-layer vegetation, while high pellet densities were associated with medium-height ground-layer vegetation (50–100 cm). The presence of Entisols was negatively associated with pellet density. The cover-layer species Pistacia lentiscus, Quercus coccifera, Quercus suber, Opuntia ficus-indica and the ground-layer grasses all showed positive associations with pellet density, while the ground-layer species Echium gaditana and Scorpiurus vermiculatus were negatively associated with pellet density. Multivariate analyses identified the mixed grassland/matorral and cork oak forest/matorral habitats as explaining most of the variation in pellet density. The height of cover-layer vegetation was negatively associated, while Opuntia and table-and/calcareous sandstone were positively associated, with mixed grassland/matorral. Distance from habitation and human impact were negatively associated and Quercus suber was positively associated with cork oak forest/matorral. Comparison with previous studies suggest that the low pellet counts in this study represent very low rabbit densities and the population as a whole appears depleted and fragmented.

Many individual nocturnal common spiny mice Acomys cahirinus and diurnal golden spiny mice A. russatus in the field are found missing all or part of their tails. Possibly, this is a predator avoidance mechanism. A 25-month field study revealed that at Ein Gedi (Israel) percentage tail-loss is 63% in male and 44% in female golden spiny mice, and 12% in male and 25% in female common spiny mice. Tail loss is significantly more common in golden spiny mice than in common spiny mice, possibly reflecting differences in predation risk or predator efficiency between the different microhabitats used by these species and in their different activity times. However, inter- and intraspecific aggressive interactions may also account in part for this pattern. Few significant differences in longevity, body mass, or reproductive condition were found between tailed and tail-less spiny mice, suggesting an advantage to tail-less individuals. Histological sections revealed a plane separating the skin layer from the underlying muscles and vertebrae, facilitating loss of the skin with little bleeding. The remainder (muscles and bone) is later chewed off by the mouse. A survey of published cases of tail loss in rodents revealed that this phenomenon occurs in at least 35 species and has evolved separately in eight rodent families, with no clear pattern in systematics, geography, or habitat use.

The hunting behaviour of leopard seals Hydrurga leptonyx was monitored opportunistically at Seal Island, South Shetland Islands, during the austral summers from 1986/87 to 1994/95. Leopard seals used several methods to catch Antarctic fur seal pups Arctocephalus gazella and chinstrap penguins Pygoscelis antarctica, and individuals showed different hunting styles and hunting success. One to two leopard seals per year were responsible for an average of 60% of observed captures of fur seal pups. Leopard seals preyed on penguins throughout the summer, but preyed on fur seal pups only between late December and mid-February. Hunting behaviour differed significantly between different locations on the island; fur seals were hunted only at one colony, and penguins were hunted in several areas. The relative abundance of prey types, size of prey in relation to predator, and specialization of individual leopard seals to hunt fur seal prey probably influence individual prey preferences among leopard seals. On five occasions, two leopard seals were seen together on Seal Island. Possible interpretations of the relationship between the inter-acting leopard seals included a mother–offspring relationship, a consorting male–female pair, and an adult leopard seal followed by an unrelated juvenile. In two incidents at Seal Island, two leopard seals were observed interacting while hunting: one seal captured fur seal pups and appeared to release them to the other seal. Observations of leopard seals interacting during hunting sessions were difficult to confirm as co-operative hunting, but they strongly implied that the two seals were not agonistic toward one another. The hunting success of individual leopard seals pursuing penguins or fur seals is probably high enough for co-operative hunting not to become a common hunting strategy; however, it may occur infrequently when it increases the hunting productivity of the seals.

Echolocation signal design in nine syntopic vespertilionid bats from the Malaysian rain forest understorey was studied. Four species of Kerivoula, two species of Phoniscus (Kerivoulinae) and three species of Murina (Murininae) all emitted calls that are typical of species that glean insects from surfaces: broadband, frequency-modulated (FM) calls of low intensity and short duration. However, calls were highly distinctive in the use of very large bandwidths (range: 89–123 kHz) and extremely high frequencies (start frequency 152–180 kHz; end frequency 43–86 kHz). Furthermore, calls were produced in groups of 2–15 at very high pulse repetition rates (37–105 Hz). The functional significance of these characteristics with respect to foraging strategy is discussed. Large signal bandwidths facilitate highly accurate target localization in terms of both range and angle estimation and can thus be interpreted as an adaptation to foraging in the highly cluttered environment of the forest understorey. The use of high frequencies so far in excess of those seen in other FM gleaning bats of the same size is less easily explained, but may represent a mechanism by which these species distinguish prey items using echolocation alone, without recourse to visual or auditory cues. Species exhibited differences in echolocation parameters, particularly the end frequency and the number of calls per group of calls. The two subfamilies differed from each other in multivariate space derived from echolocation parameters; calls of the Murininae were of lower frequency than the Kerivoulinae and were typically produced in smaller groups or singly. Within the subfamilies there was considerable overlap between species of Murina, but the Kerivoula spp. were clearly distinct from one another but not from the two Phoniscus spp.

We examined the effect of a brood-size manipulation on the foraging effort and chick rearing of known-age great skuas Catharacta skua. Young birds were expected to refrain from increasing reproductive effort and opt for a strategy of brood reduction, while old birds were expected to increase effort and rear more young. Increasing brood size led to an increase in foraging effort and brood neglect. Enlarged broods had a lower mean survival rate, but similar growth rates to one- and two-chick broods. Parents increased foraging effort to maintain chick growth rates at the expense of brood defence. This was associated with higher conspecific predation of enlarged broods. Foraging effort and chick feeding rate decreased with adult age. Younger adults increased foraging time in an attempt to satisfy the nutritional demands of the chicks, while older birds maintained a similar effort for all brood sizes. Younger adults achieved a lower fledging success despite their higher provisioning rates. Younger birds synchronized foraging and guarding duties less well, and so left the chicks unattended more often than older birds. As a consequence, their chicks suffered higher levels of conspecific predation. Defence of chicks through pair co-ordination and aggression was thus an important component of successful breeding for great skuas.

Based on data obtained from 3 years' fieldwork in Okinawajima and adjacent islands of the central Ryukyus, Japan, various physical and human-related beach characters were assessed for their relative influence on beach selection by nesting sea turtles using multiple regression analysis. Of the 23 characters considered, sand softness (measured by a specially designed tool) (positive), distance from the nearest human settlement (positive), presence of lagoon (positive), beach length (negative), and beach height (positive) were selected as influential variables in descending order. Explanations were attempted for such results in the light of correlates of these beach characters with natural and artificial factors that are believed to impact the nesting success of female sea turtles.

The demography and life-history traits of a population of the lacertid lizard Podarcis bocagei in north-west Spain were investigated. Most of the conclusions presented are based on mark–recapture studies carried out over a 2-year period. Reproductive characteristics are similar to those reported for other temperate-climate lacertids. Clutch size, egg size and hatchling size (snout–vent length, SVL) are all positively correlated with the mother's SVL. Only large females lay more than one clutch per year. Growth rate is highest in young animals and declines gradually with age. In both sexes, sexual maturity is reached between the ages of 1 and 2 years. Again in both sexes, the probability of survival was fairly constant over the lifespan. Considering the study period as a whole, there was no significant between-sex difference in survival probability. Among adults, the probability of survival was higher in winter than during other periods, but the differences were not statistically significant. The individuals of the study population are sedentary, making only short movements even when periods of up to 2 years are considered (the mean distance moved between marking and recapturing 18–24 months later was 15.7 m, maximum 45.6 m). On average, immature individuals move further than adults, and adult males move further than adult females. Estimated population density (all individuals) dropped from 1574 ha-1 during the winter of 1989/90 to 1327 ha-1 during the winter of 1990/91. The decline in population density over the study period was also reflected in the estimated net replacement rate for the population (0.85, i.e. considerably less than one), and is probably attributable to colonization of the study site by plants (reducing suitability as a habitat for P. bocagei). Estimated mean generation time was 2.09 years.

Patterns of growth were studied between 1993 and 1996 in a population of Bibron's agama Agama impalearis from an arid area in the central Jbilet Mountains, western Morocco. Non-linear regressions were used to model snout–vent lengths (SVL) and body masses of individuals caught during 1993–94 against skeletochronology age estimates. The overlap between male and female asymptotic SVLs (A) was negligible demonstrating sexual dimorphism, although there was no evidence of differences in characteristic growth rates (k) between sexes (males: A = 119.43 ± 2.29 mm and k = 0.849 ± 0.09 [month-1], females: A = 108.59 ± 3.19 mm and k = 1.079 ± 0.162 [month-1]). Asymptotic body mass differed substantially between sexes (males: 71.2 ± 3.1 g, females: 45.8 ± 4.2 g), but corresponding characteristic growth rates were similar (0.753 ± 0.339 and 0.789 ± 0.623 [month-1], respectively). The mark–recapture method provided generally higher and more reliable asymptotic size estimates (using the logistic-by-length non-linear regression model) than the skeletochronology-based estimates. Growth parameters were also estimated on an individual year basis. Only male characteristic growth rate showed a significant year-to-year variation (0.010 ± 0.006 to 0.024 ± 0.007 [day-1]), although this may have been due to a lack of statistical power. Annual variation in the absolute growth rate was detected only in hatchlings (0.087 ± 0.018 to 0.273 ± 0.132 mm.day-1) and adult males (0.089 ± 0.030 to 0.206 ± 0.100 mm.day-1).

Testicular and ovarian development in neonatal and juvenile harbour porpoises Phocoena phocoena was examined, using tissue from animals (males n = 65 and females n = 10) stranded or caught off the coast of England and Wales. Classification of the animals according to their stage of sexual development was undertaken using characteristics of gonadal morphology. Developmental correlates of the immature testis were increased incidence of prespermatogonia in seminiferous tubules, and the increasing proportion of testicular volume occupied by the seminiferous tubules. Using a low magnification (×200) assessment of testis sections, immature specimens could be grouped into three developmentally distinct classes, based on the relative amounts of interstitial and seminiferous tubule tissue and the frequency of prespermatogonia. Adult testes, showing either active spermatogenesis or seasonal quiescence, could be clearly distinguished from immature testes using histological criteria such as the presence of spermatocytes and spermatids. This classification system was used to determine relationships between testicular development and body size: males were classified as immature when they had body lengths < 135 cm and body weights < 30 kg; mature males always exceeded 140 cm in length and 40 kg in weight; and a transitional group, which was regarded as juvenile, had body lengths between 110 and 140 cm and body weights between 20 and 40 kg. Ovarian morphology was used to distinguish neonatal and juvenile females. Neonates displayed characteristic cords of naked ova which dispersed as development progressed. Neonatal animals had body lengths < 100 cm and body weights < 18 kg; within this group (n = 5) there were significant (P < 0.01) left-right asymmetries in the number of naked ova present, the left ovary containing nearly twice as many ova as the right. Although this difference was not apparent in females with body lengths > 100 cm and body weights between 19 and 30 kg (juveniles) it could be related to the almost total asymmetry of ovulation from the left ovary in this species (Harrison, Brownwell & Boice, 1972).

The range of the genus Chiasmocleis found in the south-eastern and southern parts of the Atlantic rainforest of eastern Brazil, is expanded to the north-eastern region. Chiasmocleis alagoanus sp. nov. is described from two localities in the State of Alagoas. It is characterized by: medium size (snout–vent length 25.5–27.8 mm in females, 22.7–23.4 mm in males); snout short, tip truncate in dorsal and rounded in lateral profile; hand and foot not webbed; fingers and toes without lateral dermal spines; dorsal and ventral surfaces of body and limbs smooth, without dermal spines; colour on dorsum uniformly dark brown; venter roughly marbled in dark brown and pale cream.
