We give measure estimates for sets appearing in the study of dynamical systems, such as preimages of Diophantine classes.

We prove that, for an interval X ⊆ ℝ and a normed space Z, diagonals of separately absolutely continuous mappings f : X2 → Z are exactly mappings g : X → Z, which are the sums of absolutely convergent series of continuous functions.

We give a new direct proof of the local Tb theorem in the Euclidean setting and under the assumption of dual exponents. This theorem provides a flexible framework for proving the boundedness of a Calderón–Zygmund operator, supposing the existence of systems of local accretive functions. We assume that the integrability exponents on these systems of functions are of the form 1/p + 1/q ⩽ 1, the ‘dual case’ 1/p + 1/q = 1 being the most difficult one. Our proof is direct: it avoids a reduction to the perfect dyadic case unlike some previous approaches. The principal point of interest is in the use of random grids and the corresponding construction of the corona. We also use certain twisted martingale transform inequalities.

We apply the concept of braiding sequences to link polynomials to show polynomial growth bounds on the derivatives of the Jones polynomial evaluated on S1 and of the Brandt–Lickorish–Millett–Ho polynomial evaluated on [–2, 2] on alternating and positive knots of given genus. For positive links, boundedness criteria for the coefficients of the Jones, HOMFLY and Kauffman polynomials are derived. (This is a continuation of the paper ‘Applications of braiding sequences. We present a careful approximation of the quasi-geodesics of trees of hyperbolic and relatively hyperbolic spaces. As an application we prove a dynamical and geometric combination theorem for trees of relatively hyperbolic spaces, with both Farb's and Gromov's definitions.

Let AT(Δ) be the asymptotic universal Teichmüller space, viewed as the space of all asymptotic Teichmüller equivalence classes [[μ]]. We show that if μ is asymptotically extremal in AT(Δ) and hp([[μ]]) < h([[μ]]) for some boundary point p of Δ, then there are infinitely many geodesics joining [[0]] and [[μ]] in AT(Δ). As a corollary, a necessary condition for a complex dilatation to be uniquely extremal in AT(Δ) is given.

Let S(V) be a complex linear sphere of a finite group G. Let S(V)*n denote the n-fold join of S(V) with itself and let aut G(S(V)*) denote the space of G-equivariant self-homotopy equivalences of S(V)*n. We show that for any k ≥ 1 there exists M > 0 that depends only on V such that |πk autG(S(V)*n)|≤ M for all n ≫0.

We generalize the relative index theorem of Gromov and Lawson, using coarse geometry.

We develop a new non-vanishing theorem for del Pezzo surfaces with quotient singularities.

Given a finite field of q elements, we consider a trajectory of the map associated with a polynomial ]. Using bounds of character sums, under some mild condition on f, we show that for an appropriate constant C > 0 no N ⩾ Cq½ distinct consecutive elements of such a trajectory are contained in a small subgroup of , improving the trivial lower bound . Using a different technique, we also obtain a similar result for very small values of N. These results are multiplicative analogues of several recently obtained bounds on the length of intervals containing N distinct consecutive elements of such a trajectory.

This paper revisits the concept of rough paths of inhomogeneous degree of smoothness (geometric Π-rough paths in our terminology) sketched by Lyons in 1998. Although geometric Π-rough paths can be treated as p-rough paths for a sufficiently large p, and the theory of integration of Lipγ one-forms (γ > p–1) along geometric p-rough paths applies, we prove the existence of integrals of one-forms under weaker conditions. Moreover, we consider differential equations driven by geometric Π-rough paths and give sufficient conditions for existence and uniqueness of solution.

We introduce polar metrics on a product manifold, which have product and warped product metrics as special cases. We prove a de Rham-type theorem characterizing Riemannian manifolds that can be locally or globally decomposed as a product manifold endowed with a polar metric. For such a product manifold, our main result gives a complete description of all its isometric immersions into a space form whose second fundamental forms are adapted to its product structure in the sense that the tangent spaces to each factor are preserved by all shape operators. This is a far-reaching generalization of a basic decomposition theorem for isometric immersions of Riemannian products due to Moore as well as of its extension by Nölker to isometric immersions of warped products.

Regularity, complete intersection and Gorenstein properties of a local ring can be characterized by homological conditions on the canonical homomorphism into its residue field. In positive characteristic, the Frobenius endomorphism (and, more generally, any contracting endomorphism) can also be used for these characterizations. We introduce here a class of local homomorphisms, in some sense larger than all above, for which these characterizations still hold, providing an unified treatment for this class of homomorphisms.

We give a decomposition formula for computing the state polytope of a reducible variety in terms of the state polytopes of its components: if a polarized projective variety X is a chain of subvarieties Xi satisfying some further conditions, then the state polytope of X is the Minkowski sum of the state polytopes of Xi translated by a vector τ, which can be readily computed from the ideal of Xi . The decomposition is in the strongest sense in that the vertices of the state polytope of X are precisely the sum of vertices of the state polytopes of Xi translated by τ. We also give a similar decomposition formula for the Hilbert–Mumford index of the Hilbert points of X. We give a few examples of the state polytope and the Hilbert–Mumford index computation of reducible curves, which are interesting in the context of the log minimal model program for the moduli space of stable curves.

In this paper we discuss various aspects of invariant measures for nonlinear Hamiltonian partial differential equations (PDEs). In particular, we show almost-sure global existence for some Hamiltonian PDEs with initial data of the form ‘a smooth deterministic function + a rough random perturbation’ as a corollary to the Cameron–Martin theorem and known almost-sure global existence results with respect to Gaussian measures on spaces of functions.

We are interested in entire solutions for the semilinear biharmonic equation Δ2 u = f(u) in ℝN , where f(u) = eu or –u –p (p > 0). For the exponential case, we prove that for the polyharmonic problem Δ2m u = eu with positive integer m, any classical entire solution verifies Δ2m–1 u < 0; this completes the results of Dupaigne et al. (Arch. Ration. Mech. Analysis208 (2013), 725–752) and Wei and Xu (Math. Annalen313 (1999), 207–228). We also obtain a refined asymptotic expansion of the radial separatrix solution to Δ2 u = eu in ℝ3, which answers a question posed by Berchio et al. (J. Diff. Eqns252 (2012), 2569–2616). For the negative power case, we show the non-existence of the classical entire solution for any 0 < p ⩽ 1.

We prove two-term supercongruences for generalizations of recently discovered sporadic sequences of Cooper. We also discuss recent progress and future directions concerning other types of supercongruences.

Using results from Ramanujan's lost notebook, Zudilin recently gave an insightful proof of a radial limit result of Folsom et al. for mock theta functions. Here we see that Mortenson's previous work on the dual nature of Appell–Lerch sums and partial theta functions and on constructing bilateral q-series with mixed mock modular behaviour is well suited for such radial limits. We present five more radial limit results, which follow from mixed mock modular bilateral q-hypergeometric series. We also obtain the mixed mock modular bilateral series for a universal mock theta function of Gordon and McIntosh. The later bilateral series can be used to compute radial limits for many classical second-, sixth-, eighth- and tenth-order mock theta functions.

We introduce the concepts of growth and spectral bound for strongly continuous semigroups acting on Fréchet spaces and show that the Banach space inequality s(A) ⩽ ω 0(T) extends to the new setting. Via a concrete example of an even uniformly continuous semigroup, we illustrate that for Fréchet spaces effects with respect to these bounds may happen that cannot occur on a Banach space.
