Several progenitor scenarios have been suggested for Type Ia supernovae. Here we discuss the consequences for the explosion mechanism and for observables of some of them, which are explored by means of multi-dimensional hydrodynamic and radiation transfer simulations. While the observables predicted from delayed detonations of Chandrasekhar-mass white dwarfs agree reasonably well with the data, the corresponding progenitor systems may be too rare to account for the observed rate of Type Ia supernovae. Several alternatives are investigated of which violent mergers of two white dwarfs and, perhaps, double detonations of sub-Chandrasekhar mass white dwarfs hold promise for reproducing the observables of normal Type Ia supernovae.

We argue that detonations of sub-Chandrasekhar mass white dwarfs can lead to bright explosions with light curves and spectra similar to those of observed Type Ia supernovae. Given that binary systems containing accreting sub-Chandrasekhar mass white dwarfs should be common, this suggests that a non-negligible fraction of the observed Type Ia supernova rate may arise from sub-Chandrasekhar mass explosions, if they can be ignited. We discuss aspects of how such explosions might be realized in nature and both merits and challenges associated with invoking sub-Chandrasekhar mass explosion models to account for observed Type Ia supernovae.

We present observational and theoretical studies constraining Type Ia supernova progenitors.

First, we use a new observational technique to show that “prompt” SNe Ia that trace star-formation on cosmic timescales exhibit a significant delay time of 200-500 million years. This implies that either the majority of SNe Ia companion stars have main-sequence masses less than three solar masses, or that most SNe Ia arise from double-white dwarf binaries.

Second we present a comprehensive study of white dwarf collisions as an avenue for creating SNe Ia. Using a smooth particle hydrodynamics code with a 13-isotope nuclear network, we show that several combinations of white dwarf masses and impact parameters produce enough 56Ni to result in luminosities ranging from those of sub-luminous to super-luminous SNe Ia, depending on the parameters of the collision.

Finally, we conduct a simulation survey of double-degenerate white dwarf mergers with varying mass combinations. Unlike previous works, we do not add detonations by hand to our simulations, and we do not find any thermonuclear explosions during the mergers. Instead, all but one of our simulations forms a cold, degenerate core surrounded by a hot disk, while our least massive pair of stars forms only a hot disk. We characterize the remnants by core mass, rotational velocity, and half-mass radius, and discuss how we will evolve them further with simulations that incorporate dissipative processes. Such simulations may indeed lead to double-degenerate Type Ia explosions that occur many orbits after the mergers themselves.

Recent studies have shown that for suitable initial conditions both super- and sub-Chandrasekhar mass carbon-oxygen white dwarf mergers produce explosions similar to observed SNe Ia. The question remains, however, how much fine tuning is necessary to produce these conditions. We performed a large set of SPH merger simulations, sweeping the possible parameter space. We find trends for merger remnant properties, and discuss how our results affect the viability of our recently proposed sub-Chandrasekhar merger channel for SNe Ia.

Among the possible progenitor scenarios considered for Type Ia supernovae, those that involve a carbon–oxygen white dwarf (CO WD) accreting stably towards the Chandrasekhar mass should undergo a phase of hydrostatic carbon burning under high densities and strong convection: the simmering or carbon–flash phase, which can extend for a few hundred years before explosion. During this phase the progenitor CO WD can burn a small fraction of its carbon hydrostatically, releasing energy and ashes that make the star convective and able to capture electrons from the degenerate plasma. In this work we present simplified pre–supernova evolution models of CO WDs growing towards the Chandrasekhar mass accreting matter stably and evolving through the simmering phase towards ignition in order to explore the effects of different initial masses and cooling times in the final chemical composition of the WD before explosion. Preliminary results show that, as expected, denser systems at the start of the simmering phase undergo stronger neutronization. The amount of neutronization is less than what is found in the one–zone models of Chamulak et al. (2008), about a third, and can vary by about a factor of two depending on the exact path to explosion.

In this review, I summarize the observational attempts made so far to unveil the nature of the progenitor system(s) of Type Ia supernovae. In particular, I focus on the most recent developments that followed the claimed detection of circumstellar material around a few events, and on the link this possibly establishes with recurrent novae. In this framework, I then discuss the case of RS Oph, what we know of its circumstellar environment, and what this is telling us about its supposed connection to Type Ia supernovae explosions.

Type Ia supernovae are very good tools for measuring distances on a cosmic scale. The consensus view is that mass transfer onto a white dwarf in a close binary system leads to a thermonuclear explosion, though the nature of the mass donor is still uncertain. In the single-degenerate model it is a main-sequence star or an evolved star. In the double-degenerate model it is another white dwarf. We study the velocity structure of absorbing material along the line of sight to 35 Type Ia supernovae and find a statistical preference for blueshifted structures, likely arising in gas outflows from the supernova progenitor systems, consistent with a single-degenerate progenitor for a substantial fraction of Type Ia supernovae in nearby spiral galaxies.

I propose two new means of identifying the main class of progenitors of Type Ia supernovae – single or double degenerate: (i) If the range of supernova properties is significantly determined by the range of viewing angles of non-spherically symmetric explosions, then the nature of the correlation between polarization and another property (for example, the velocity gradient) can be used to determine the geometry of the asymmetry and hence the nature of the progenitor, and (ii) in the double- but not in the single-degenerate case, the range in the observed properties (e.g., velocity gradients) is likely to increase with the amount of carbon seen in the ejecta.

We present an analysis of high precision V light curves (LC) for 18 local Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) as obtained with the same telescope and setup at the Las Campanas Observatory (LCO). This homogeneity provides an intrinsic accuracy of a few hundredths of a magnitude with respect to individual LCs and between different objects. Based on the single degenerate (SD) scenario, we identify patterns which have been predicted by model calculations as signatures of the progenitor and accretion rate which change the explosion energy and the amount of electron capture, respectively. Using these templates as principle components and the overdetermined system of SNe pairs, we reconstruct the properties of progenitors and progenitor systems. All LCO SNe Ia follow the brightness decline relation except 2001ay. After subtraction of the two components, the remaining scatter is reduced to ≈0.01m−0.03m. SNe Ia seem to originate from progenitors with main-sequence masses MMS > 3 M⊙ with the exception of two subluminous SNe Ia with MMS < 2 M⊙. The component analysis indicates a wide range of accretion rates in the progenitor systems closing the gap to accretion induced collapses (AIC). SN1991t-like objects show differences in decline rate (dm15) but no tracers of our secondary parameters. This may point to a different origin such as the double degenerate or pulsating delayed detonation scenarios. SN2001ay does not follow the decline relation. It can be understood in the framework of C-rich white dwarfs (WDs), and this group may produce an anti-Phillips relation. We suggest that this may be a result of a common envelope phase and mixing during central He burning as in SN1987A.

Simplified explosion models of super-Chandrasekhar-mass C-O white dwarfs (WDs) are constructed with parameters such as WD mass and 56Ni mass. Their light curves are obtained by solving one-dimensional equations of radiation hydrodynamics, and compared with the observations of SN 2009dc, one of the overluminous Type Ia supernovae, to estimate its properties. As a result, the progenitor of SN 2009dc is suggested to be a 2.2–2.4-M⊙ C-O WD with 1.2–1.4 M⊙ of 56Ni, if the extinction by its host galaxy is negligible.

UBVRI photometry and medium resolution spectroscopy of two Type Ia supernovae, SN 2009an and SN 2009ig, are presented. Their Δm15(B) indicate these two SNe marginally deviate from “normal” Type Ia events. Spectroscopically, both SNe belong to the low velocity gradient group. The estimated mass of 56Ni ejected is almost a factor of two different for these two objects, with the estimates being ~0.4M⊙ for SN 2009an and ~0.8 M⊙ for SN 2009ig.

A super-Chandrasekhar (SC) supernova (SN) has an extremely high luminosity and a slow decline rate of the light curve in the early-phase. We present late-phase observations of the SC SN 2009dc. We find that the optical luminosity a year after maximum is much fainter than that expected from its early luminosity. We attempt to fit the analytic light curve model to the observations using Arnett's rule. The model successfully explains the light curves until 120 days. This suggests that the extremely high luminosity originates from the 56Ni decay. We suggest that the late-phase decline would be caused by dust formation. The existence of strong carbon features in early-phase spectra would support this scenario. We also find a blend of [Ca ii] and [Ni ii] in its late-phase spectrum. This indicates that the calcium is distributed in the inner layer along with nickel and iron. We conclude that the mixing may occur in the inner parts of the ejecta.

We have completed a survey down to R = 15 mag of the stars within a circle of 4 arcmin radius around the nominal center of the remnant of SN 1006, one of the three historical Type Ia supernovae (the other two being SN 1572 and SN 1604), in search of a possible surviving binary companion of the white dwarf whose explosion gave rise to the supernova. The stellar parameters (effective temperature, surface gravity, and metallicity), as well as the radial velocities of all the stars, have been measured from spectra obtained with the UVES spectrograph at the VLT, and from the former and the available photometry, distances have been determined. Chemical abundances of the Fe-peak elements Cr, Mn, Co, and Ni have also been measured to check for possible contamination of the stellar surface by the supernova ejecta. The limiting magnitude of the survey would allow us to find stellar companions of the red-giant type, subgiant stars, and main–sequence stars down to F5–6. Unlike in SN 1572, where a subgiant of type G0–1 has been proposed as the companion of SN 1572, for SN 1006 we can discard the possibility that SN 1006 had a red giant or subgiant companion.

There is broad agreement that the stars which explode as Type Ia supernovae are white dwarfs. They have accreted material in a binary system until they are near the Chandrasekhar mass and detonate/deflagrate. The two main scenarios for this accretion process are merging with a companion white dwarf (double degenerate scenario), or accretion from a main-sequence to red giant donor (single degenerate scenario). The donor star survives post-explosion and would provide substantial evidence for the single degenerate scenario, if found. Our team is analyzing stars in close proximity to Galactic Type Ia remnants to find surviving donor stars. In my talk I will introduce the different progenitor systems and the expected state for a donor star today. I will outline our search using high resolution spectroscopy and will present updated results.

The remnants of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) can provide important clues about their progenitor histories. We discuss two well-observed supernova remnants (SNRs) that are believed to have resulted from SNe Ia, and use various tools to shed light on the possible progenitor histories. We find that Kepler's SNR is consistent with a symbiotic binary progenitor consisting of a white dwarf and an AGB star. Our hydrosimulations can reproduce the observed kinematic and morphological properties. For Tycho's remnant we use the characteristics of the X-ray spectrum and kinematics to show that the ejecta has likely interacted with dense circumstellar gas.

We successfully obtained the first optical spectra of the faint light echoes around Cassiopeia A and Tycho Brahe's supernova remnants (SNRs) with FOCAS and the Subaru Telescope. We conclude that Cas A and Tycho's SN 1572 belong to the Type IIb and normal Type Ia supernovae, respectively. Light echo spectra are important in order to obtain further insight into the supernova explosion mechanism of Tycho's SN 1572: how the Type Ia explosion actually proceeds, and whether accretion occurs from a companion or by the merging of two white dwarfs. The proximity of the SN 1572 remnant has allowed detailed studies, such as the possible identification of the binary companion, and provides a unique opportunity to test theories of the explosion mechanism and the nature of the progenitor. Future light-echo spectra, obtained in different spatial directions of SN 1572, will enable to construct a three-dimensional spectroscopic view of the explosion.

We have used three independent methods to determine an accurate and precise geometric center of SNR 0509-67.5, at RA=05:09:31.208, DEC=−67:31:17.48 (J2000). This supernova, which occurred approximately 400 years ago in the Large Magellanic Cloud, was confirmed to be a Type Ia by Rest et al. (2005), Rest et al. (2008) based on spectra of a light echo from the eruption. If this supernova had a single-degenerate progenitor system, we would see the “leftover” companion star within a certain distance of the remnant's center. Accounting for an offset due to enhanced ISM in the west-southwest quadrant of the remnant, we find the eruption position to be at RA=05:09:30.976, DEC=−67:31:17.90; the error circle which should contain any possible ex-companion star has a radius of 1.60″ for 99.73% (3-sigma) containment. This accounts for the proper motion of the stars, the possibility of kicks from the supernova, and asymmetries in the explosion and remnant expansion. We find no possible ex-companion stars within this ellipse, to a limiting magnitude of V=26.9: there are no red giants, which precludes symbiotic progenitors, no subgiants, which when combined with the lack of red giants precludes recurrent nova progenitors, and no main sequence stars with mass greater than 1.16 solar masses (V brighter than 22.7 mag), which precludes persistent supersoft X-ray source progenitors. Indeed, all published SD models are eliminated, so we conclude that this particular Type Ia supernova had a double-degenerate progenitor.

This symposium was focused on the hunt for the progenitors of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia). Is there a main channel for the production of SNe Ia? If so, are these elusive progenitors single degenerate or double degenerate systems? Although most participants seemed to favor the single degenerate channel, there was no general agreement on the type of binary system at play. An observational puzzle that was highlighted was the apparent paucity of supersoft sources in our Galaxy and also in external galaxies. The single degenerate channel (and as it was pointed out, quite possibly also the double degenerate channel) requires the binary system to pass through a phase of steady nuclear burning. However, the observed number of supersoft sources falls short by a factor of up to 100 in explaining the estimated birth rates of SNe Ia. Thus, are these supersoft sources somehow hidden away and radiating at different wavelengths, or are we missing some important pieces of this puzzle that may lead to the elimination of a certain class of progenitor? Another unanswered question concerns the dependence of SNe Ia luminosities on the age of their host galaxy. Several hypotheses were put forward, but none was singled out as the most likely explanation.

It is fair to say that at the end of the symposium the definitive answer to the vexed progenitor question remained well and truly wide open.
