An identification has been conducted of class I methanol masers with 1) short-wave infrared objects EGO (extended green objects) - tracer bipolar outflow of matter in young stellar objects, and 2) isolated pre-protostellar gas-dust cores of the interstellar medium which are observed in absorption in the mid-infrared in the Galactic plane. It is shown that more than 50% of class I methanol masers are identified with bipolar outflows, considering the EGO as bipolar outflows (as compared with the result of 22% in the first version of the MMI catalog that contains no information about EGO). 99 from 139 class I methanol masers (71%) are identified with SDC. Thus, it seems possible that the MMI can be formed in isolated self-gravitating condensations, which are the silhouette of dark clouds - IRDC and SDC.

We present new imaging and spectral analysis of the recently discovered extended X–ray emission around the high-magnetic-field rotating radio transient RRAT J1819–1458. We used two Chandra observations, taken on 2008 May 31 and 2011 May 28. The diffuse X–ray emission was detected with a significance of ~19σ in the image obtained by combining the two observations. Long-term spectral variability has not been observed. Possible scenarios for the origin of this diffuse X–ray emission, further detailed in Camero–Arranz et al. (2012), are here discussed.

Recent observations show evidence that high-z (z ~ 2 − 3) early-type galaxies (ETGs) are more compact than those with comparable mass at z ~ 0 (e.g. Trujillo et al. 2007; Buitrago et al. 2008). Such a size evolution is most likely explained by the ‘dry merger scenario’. However, previous studies based on this scenario are not able to consistently explain both the properties of the high-z compact massive ETGs and the local ETGs (Nipoti et al. 2009). We investigate the effect of multiple sequential minor mergers on the size evolution of the compact massive ETGs.

The distributions of the measured longitudinal magnetic field strength, B″, and maximum height observed, h, are presented. 50 Mm, 30–35 G and 50 G respectively are found to be the critical h and B″ for the pre-eruption of quiescent prominences.

We present numerical results of the science performance of the SPICES mission, which aims to characterize the spectro-polarimetric properties of cold exoplanets and circumstellar disks in the visible. We focus on the instrument ability to retrieve the spectral signatures of molecular species, clouds and surface of super-Earths in the habitable zone of solar-type stars. Considering realistic reflected planet spectra and instrument limitation, we show that SPICES could analyse the atmosphere and surface of a few super-Earths within 5 pc of the Sun.

The Spitzer Legacy Program “Surveying the Agents of Galaxy Evolution in the Tidally-Stripped, Low-Metallicity Small Magellanic Cloud” (SAGE-SMC; Gordon et al. 2011) allows a global study of star formation in the SMC at high enough resolution to resolve individual cores and protostars at a range of mid-IR wavelengths. Using the SAGE-SMC IRAC (3.6 - 8.0 μm) and MIPS (24 and 70 μm) catalogs and images combined with the near-IR and optical data, we identified a population of ∼1100 intermediate- to high-mass Young Stellar Objects (YSOs) in the SMC (3 × more than previously known). We investigate the properties of the YSOs and how they relate to the galaxy's structure and gas and dust distribution.

Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence is a critical component of the current paradigms of star formation, dynamo theory, particle transport, magnetic reconnection and evolution of the ISM. In order to gain understanding of how MHD turbulence regulates processes in the Galaxy, a confluence of numerics, observations and theory must be imployed. In these proceedings we review recent progress that has been made on the connections between theoretical, numerical, and observational understanding of MHD turbulence as it applies to both the neutral and ionized interstellar medium.

We propose and use Bayesian techniques for the determination of physical parameters in solar prominence plasmas, combining observational and theoretical properties of waves and oscillations. The Bayesian approach also enables to perform model comparison to assess how plausible alternative physical models/mechanisms are in view of data.

Baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) at low redshift provide a precise and largely model-independent way to measure the Hubble constant, H0. The 6dF Galaxy Survey measurement of the BAO scale gives a value of H0 = 67 ± 3.2 km s−1 Mpc−1, achieving a 1σ precision of 5%. With improved analysis techniques, the planned wallaby (Hi) and taipan (optical) redshift surveys are predicted to measure H0 to 1–3% precision.

The bright 25 GHz series of methanol masers is formed in highly energetic regions of massive star formation and provides a natural signpost of shocked gas surrounding newly forming stars. A systematic survey for the 25 GHz masers has only recently been carried out. We present the preliminary results from the interferometric follow up of 51 masers at 25 GHz in the southern sky.

The role of turbulence in astrophysical environments and its interplay with magnetic fields is still highly debated. In this lecture, we will discuss this issue in the framework of dynamo processes. We will first present a very brief summary of turbulent dynamo theories, then will focus on small scale turbulent dynamos and their particular relevance on the origin and maintenance of magnetic fields in the intra-cluster media (ICM) of galaxies. In these environments, the very low density of the flow requires a collisionless-MHD treatment. We will show the implications of this approach in the turbulent amplification of the magnetic fields in these environments. To finalize, we will also briefly address the connection between MHD turbulence and fast magnetic reconnection and its possible implications in the diffusion of magnetic flux in the dynamo process.

We revealed a statistically significant clustering in the all sky distribution of AKARI-WISE young stellar objects with large groups of elongated and bush types.

In this paper, we estimated the black hole mass for some blazars with available variability time scales by assuming that the γ-ray emissions are from a distance of 200Rg from the center. The results show that the central black hole masses are in the range of log (M/M⊙) = 6.45 to 8.30.

The magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) model for young pulsar wind nebulae (PWN) has been successful in reproducing many features of the nebulae. The model is characterized by a termination shock (TS) between the PWN and unshocked pulsar wind. Relativistic particles are injected at the TS and follow an advective flow to the outer boundary. However, toroidal structure of well studied young PWN like the Crab Nebula, 3C 58 and G21.5-0.9 is only present in the region close to the TS. In the outer parts of the nebulae, filamentary and loop-like structure is observed. Also, the radial variation of spectral index due to synchrotron losses is smoother than expected in the MHD flow model. We find that a pure diffusion model with energy independent diffusion and a transmitting boundary can reproduce the basic data on nebular size and spectral index variation for the Crab, 3C 58, and G21.5-0.9. Energy dependent diffusion is also discussed. Power law variations of the coefficient with energy are degenerate with variation in the input particle energy distribution index in the steady state case. Monte Carlo simulations of particle transport with both diffusion and advection for the Crab nebula and 3C 58 suggest a picture in which advection dominates the inner part of the PWN where toroidal structure is clearly present. Diffusion dominates the outer part of the PWN where filamentary and loop-like structure is observed. The source of the chaotic field is uncertain, but may be related to Rayleigh-Taylor instability at the outer boundary of young nebulae and/or the kink instability of the toroidal magnetic field.

Submillimeter observations through the atmosphere can be affected by the complex spectroscopic features of the air. Calibration of astronomical observations in these frequencies requires proper modelling of the atmosphere. We analyzed sky observations from altitudes around 500 and 200 hPa respectively and found deficiencies in atmospheric models. Further research to improve the models are expected to help in future submillimeter observations.

We examine the evolution of the snow line in a protoplanetary disc. If the magneto-rotational instability (MRI) drives turbulence throughout the disc, there is a unique snow line outside of which the disc is icy. The snow line moves closer to the star as the infall accretion rate drops. Because the snow line moves inside the radius of the Earth's orbit, the formation of our water-devoid planet is difficult with this model. However, protoplanetary discs are not likely to be sufficiently ionised to be fully turbulent. A dead zone at the mid-plane slows the flow of material through the disc and a global steady state cannot be achieved. We model the evolution of the snow line also in a disc with a dead zone. As the mass is accumulating, the outer parts of the dead zone become self gravitating, heat the massive disc and thus the outer snow line does not come inside the radius of the Earth's orbit. With this model there is sufficient time and mass in the disc for the Earth to form from water-devoid planetesimals at a radius of 1AU. Furthermore, the additional inner icy region within the dead zone predicted by this model may allow for the formation of giant planets close to their host star without the need for much migration.

The steady increase of the sample of know extrasolar planets broadens our knowledge and at the same time, reveals our lack of understanding. Habitability is a wide expression, needing planet formation theory and microphysics of cloud formation at the same time. The habitability of a planet depends, amongst other things, on how much radiation reached the ground and how much of potentially dangerous radiation is absorbed on the way through the atmosphere. For this, we need to understand cloud formation and it's impact on the atmosphere.

We have studied the formation of mineral clouds on planetary atmospheres by a kinetic approach which allows us to predict the size distribution and material composition of the cloud particles. With these results we show that mineral cloud particles can be electrically charged and at which point inside a cloud charge separation will cause an electric field breakdown. Such streamer processes result in an extreme increase of the local number of free charges. Given the strong magnetic field in Brown Dwarfs and maybe in giant gas planets, these charges will than be accelerated upward out of the atmosphere where they become detectable as radio emission.

We present a study of the evolution of early-type galaxies (ETGs) that combines luminosity function and clustering measurements. This technique shows that ETGs at a given redshift evolve into brighter galaxies in the rest-frame passively evolved optical at lower redshifts. Notice that this indicates that a stellar-mass selection at different redshifts does not necessarily provide samples of galaxies in a progenitor-descendant relationship. The comparison between high redshift ETGs and their likely descendants at z = 0 points to a higher number density for the progenitors by a factor 3 to 11, implying the need for mergers to decrease their number density by today. Because the progenitor-to-descendant ratios of luminosity density are consistent with the unit value, our results show no need for strong star-formation episodes in ETGs since z = 1, which indicates that the needed mergers are dry, i.e. gas free.

Solar coronal cavities are regions of rarefied density and elliptical cross-section. The Coronal Multi-channel Polarimeter (CoMP) obtains daily full-Sun coronal observations in linear polarization, allowing a systematic analysis of the coronal magnetic field in polar-crown prominence cavities. These cavities commonly possess a characteristic “lagomorphic” signature in linear polarization that may be explained by a magnetic flux-rope model. We analyze the spatial relation between the EUV cavity and the CoMP linear polarization signature.

Targeting quasar candidates is always an important task for large spectroscopic sky survey projects. Astronomers never give up thinking out effective approaches to separate quasars from stars. The previous methods on this issue almost belong to supervised methods or color-color cut. In this work, we compare the performance of a supervised method – Support Vector Machine (SVM)– with that of an unsupervised method one-class SVM. The performance of SVM is better than that of one-class SVM. But one-class SVM is an unsupervised algorithm which is helpful to recognize rare or mysterious objects. Combining supervised methods with unsupervised methods is effective to improve the performance of a single classifier.
