Due to their compactness, persistence and slow motion, Class II CH3OH masers are excellent targets for parallax and proper motion measurements for massive star-forming regions in the Galactic Disk. These measurements can be used to improve our understanding of the spiral structure and dynamics of the Milky Way. At the same time, Class II CH3OH masers can also be used to study gas kinematics close to the exciting star, tracing rotation, infall and/or outflow motions.

We determined the age of the M31 globular cluster B379 using isochrones of the Padova stellar evolutionary models. At the same time, the cluster's metal abundance, its distance modulus, and reddening value were also obtained. The results obtained in this paper are consistent with previous determinations, including the age. Brown et al. constrained the age of B379 by comparing its color–magnitude diagram with isochrones of the 2006 VandenBerg models. Therefore, this paper confirms the consistency of the age scale of B379 between the Padova isochrones and the 2006 VandenBerg isochrones. The results of B379 obtained in this paper are: metallicity [M/H] = log(Z/Z⊙) = −0.325 dex, age τ = 11.0 ± 1.5 Gyr, reddening E(B − V) = 0.08 mag, and distance modulus (m − M)0 = 24.44 ± 0.10 mag. Using the metallicity, the reddening value and the distance modulus obtained in this paper, we constrained the age of B379 by comparing its multicolor photometry with theoretical stellar population synthesis models. The age of B379 obtained is 10.6−0.76+0.92 Gyr, which is in very good agreement with the determination from main-sequence photometry.

We have observed a quiescent prominence with the Hinode Solar Optical Telescope (SOT) (Ca II and Hα lines), Sacramento Peak Dunn Solar Telescope using the Universal Birefringent Filter (DST/UBF, in Hα, Hβ and Sodium-D lines), THEMIS (Télescope Héliographique pour l Etude du Magnétisme et des Instabilités Solaires/MTR (Multi Raies) spectromagnetograph (He D3), and the Solar Dynamics Observatory Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (SDO/AIA) in EUV over a 4 hour period on 2012 October 10. The small fields of view of the SOT, DST, and MTR are centered on a large prominence footpoint extending towards the surface. This feature appears in the larger field of view of the AIA/304 Å filtergram as a large, quasi-vertical pillar with loops on each side. The THEMIS/MTR data indicate that the magnetic field in the pillar is essentially horizontal and the observations in the optical domain show a large number of horizontally aligned features in the pillar. The data are consistent with a model of cool prominence plasma trapped in the dips of horizontal field lines. The SOT and DST data show what appear to be moving wave pulses. These pulses, which include a Doppler signature, move vertically, perpendicular to the field direction, along quasi-vertical columns of horizontal threads in the pillar. The pulses have a velocity of propagation of about 10 km/s, a wavelength about 2000 km in the plane of the sky, and a period about 280 sec. We interpret these waves in terms of fast magnetosonic waves.

VLBI multi-epoch water maser observations are a powerful tool to study the gas very close to the central engine responsible for the phenomena associated with the early evolution of massive protostars. In this paper we present a summary of the main observational results obtained toward the massive star-forming regions of Cepheus A and W75N. These observations revealed unexpected phenomena in the earliest stages of evolution of massive objects (e.g., non-collimated “short-lived” pulsed ejections in different massive protostars), and provided new insights in the study of the dynamic scenario of the formation of high-mass stars (e.g., simultaneous presence of a jet and wide-angle outflow in the massive object Cep A HW2, similar to what is observed in low-mass protostars). In addition, with these observations it has been possible to identify new, previously unseen centers of high-mass star formation through outflow activity.

When a laser beam transmits through a multi-mode fiber, speckles show in the output beam. In this work, we study the laser speckle under static and dynamic scrambling by the histogram and line profile of far-field pattern. The results show that static scrambling has little effect on the intensity distribution. The dynamic scrambling reduces the speckles without changing the line profile. Two possible explanations are proposed.

HI absorption-line studies provide a unique probe of the gas distribution and kinematics in galaxies well beyond the local universe (z ≳ 0.3). HI absorption-line surveys with next-generation radio telescopes will provide the first large-scale studies of HI in a redshift regime which is poorly understood. However, we currently lack the understanding to infer galaxy properties from absorption-line observations alone. To address this issue, we are conducting a search for intervening HI absorption in a sample of 20 nearby galaxies. Our aim is to investigate how the detection rate varies with distance from the galaxy. We target sight-lines to bright continuum sources, which intercept known gas-rich galaxies, selected from the HIPASS Bright Galaxy Catalogue (Koribalski et al. 2004). In our pilot sample, six galaxies with impact parameters < 20 kpc, we do not detect any absorption lines — although all are detected in 21cm emission. This indicates that an absorption non-detection cannot simply be interpreted as an absence of neutral gas – see Fig. 1. Our detection rate is low compared to previous surveys e.g. Gupta et al. (2010). This is, at least partially, due to the high resolution of the observations reducing the flux of the background source, which will also be an issue in future surveys, such as ASKAP-FLASH.

It is generally acknowledged that Type II supernovae result from the collapse of iron core of a massive star which, at least in some cases, produces a neutron star. At this stage, the neutrinos are produced by neutronization which speeds up as collapse continues. During collapse an outward bound shock wave forms in the matter falling onto the nearly stationary core. The conditions behind the shock at 100 to 200 km are suitable for neutrino heating. This neutrino heating blows a hot bubble above the protoneutron star and is the most important source of energy for Supernova explosion. At this stage, we try to attain the r-process (rapid neutron capture process) path responsible for the production of heavy elements beyond iron, which are otherwise not possible to be formed by fusion reactions. The most interesting evolution occurs as temperature falls from 1010 K to 109 K. At these high temperature conditions, the critical fluids after fusion reactions are forbidden and transform into the respective atoms by r-process path which on beta decaying produce the ultimate elements of the periodic chart.

Another astrophysical parameter needed for our analysis is neutron number density which we take to be greater than 1020 cm−3. With these, at different entropy environments, we assign the neutron binding energy that represents the r-process path in the chart of nuclides. Along the path, the experimental data of observed elements matches our calculated one. We find that an entropy of ~300 with Ye ≃ 0.45 can lead to a successful r-process. It produced heavy neutron-rich nuclei with A ≃ 80 – 240. Later ejecta are neutron-rich (Ye ≤ 0.5) and leaves behind a compact neutron star.

We review some of the currently used techniques to detect stellar magnetic fields on cool stars. Emphasis is put on spectropolarimetry with high-resolution spectrographs and its related data de-noising techniques and multi-line inverse modeling. Detections and results from Zeeman splittings and broadenings are briefly mentioned. We discuss some of our most recent Zeeman Doppler Imaging (ZDI) results and present a comparison of ZDI maps of the K-type WTTS V410 Tauri and the planet-hosting F8 star HD 179949 with results from other groups.

Raman scattering of far UV photons with atomic hydrogen is important in studying the mass loss and accretion processes in many symbiotic stars. We present basic atomic physical properties for the inelastic scattering of He II 949 with a hydrogen atom, which results in Raman scattered He II 4332 blueward of H gamma. At line center of He II 949, the total scattering cross section is computed to be σtot = 2.5 × 10−22 cm2 and the branching ratio into the level 2s is 0.12. It is proposed that comparisons of broad Balmer wings and Raman scattered He II features may provide an important diagnostic of far UV continuum around H I Lyman series.

With the combination of Herschel PACS (far-IR), submillimeter (submm) and millimeter (mm) ground-based observations, we are leading an investigation of all members with spectral types M4 and onwards in the Taurus star-forming region. This complete census spans the stellar to substellar boundary (M6.25), and the wavelength range covers the transition from optically thick to optically thin emission. From our Hershel PACS observations of ~135 sources, we obtain a detection rate of ~40% at 70 μm and a detection rate of ~20% at 160 μm, and provide the first far-IR measurements for the majority of these members. With our complementary submm and mm observations, best fit SED models from the radiative transfer code MCFOST will be used to infer disk properties such as scale height, mass, outer radius and maximum dust grain size. These comprehensive population statistics of disks are critical for testing star/brown dwarf and planet formation models around these later type members of Taurus.

We carried out the multicolor surface photometry in BVR and griz filters parallel with stellar kinematic measurements from the long slit spectra for the low surface brightness galaxy Malin 2. The use of the multicolor surface photometry as well as the available HI rotation curve allowed us to construct the mass distribution model of the galaxy. Photometrical and dynamical mass estimates agree with the dark halo mass fraction of about 70% within four disc radial scalelengths (~ 70 kpc). We used our dynamical model to obtain radial profiles of the equilibrium disc volume density and gas pressure in the galaxy midplane based on the available HI and CO data. The observed molecular gas fraction appears to be much higher than in the high surface brightness galaxies for a similar gas pressure.

In this study, we probe for the first time the molecular gas physical properties of several star forming regions located in the arms and inter-arms of the spiral galaxy NGC 6946. Combining our observations with additional data found in the literature, we provide in this study the most complete CO ladder ever obtained in these inter-arm and arm regions, i.e. the CO(1-0, 2-1, 3-2, 4-3, 6-5) and 13CO(1-0, 2-1) transitions. For each region studied, we use more precisely the large velocity gradient (LVG) assumption in order to derive the beam-averaged molecular gas physical properties. Namely, we obtained the gas kinetic temperature (i.e. 'best' TK), volume number gas density (i.e. 'best' n(H2)) and CO column density (i.e. 'best' N(CO)) which best reproduce the data for 8 regions investigated. Optical depths were also estimated for a large variety of CO lines in these regions. To identify the best values found, we used two complementary theoretical approaches when comparing the model predictions with the observations, i.e. the χ2 minimisation and the likelihood. Very different physical conditions for the molecular gas from a region to another have been obtained: TK ranges from 10 to 250 K, n(H2) ranges from 102.3 to 107.0 cm−3 and N(CO) ranges from 1015.0 to 1019.3 cm−2 among the arm and inter-arm regions. For each region probed, we also published for the first time the CO spectral line energy distribution (SLED) from CO(1-0) to CO(10-9) for this galaxy, mixing observations and model predictions which provide an essential insight for future follow-up observational programmes. Finally, in this work, we discuss the physical properties we obtained for each region in relation with the presence of young stellar population characteristics such as supernovae remnants (SNRs), Hi holes, Hii regions.

Understanding how a disk surrounding a young star evolves and disperses is crucial in order to understand the subsequent planet formation. In this proceeding, we summarize the results reported by Rigliaco et al. (2013) on the origin of the [OI] low-velocity component as a possible disk dispersal indicator.

Observing high-energy gamma-rays from Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) offers a unique potential to probe extremely tiny values of the intergalactic magnetic field (IGMF), a long standing question of astrophysics, astroparticle physics and cosmology. Very high energy (VHE) photons from blazars propagating along the line of sight interact with the extragalactic background light (EBL) and produce e+e− pairs. Through inverse-Compton interaction, mainly on the cosmic microwave background (CMB), these pairs generate secondary GeV-TeV components accompanying the primary VHE signal. Such secondary components would be detected in the gamma-ray range as delayed “pair echos” for very weak IGMF (B < 10−16G), while they should result in a spatially extended gamma-ray emission around the source for higher IGMF values (B > 10−16G). Coordinated observations with space (i.e. Fermi) and ground-based gamma-ray instruments, such as the present Cherenkov experiments H.E.S.S., MAGIC and VERITAS, the future Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) Observatory, and the wide-field detectors such as HAWC and LHAASO, should allow to analyze and finally detect such echos, extended emission or pair halos, and to further characterize the IGMF.

We study the cross-correlation between X-rays of different energies for the atoll-type source 4U 1608–52 with RXTE, and find the cross-correlation evolutes along the different branches. The anti-correlation is reported from the Galactic black hole candidates and Z-type luminous sources in their hard states. Our results are a little different from the Z-type sources. Here we provide the first evidence that a similar anti-correlated feature can also be found in atoll-type source, and it is not corresponding to the lowest accretion rate.

Since 2007 VERA (VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry) has been producing astrometric results (distances and/or proper motions) for Galactic maser sources. Nearly 30 parallaxes have been obtained for star-forming regions and late-type stars. By using VERA's astrometric results for star-forming regions, combined with those obtained with VLBA and EVN, fundamental Galactic parameters and Galactic structure may be derived. Our results show that R0 = 8.4 ± 0.4 kpc and Ω⊙ ≡ Ω0 + V⊙/R0=30.7±0.8 km s−1 kpc−1, and also show that the rotation curve of the Galaxy is nearly flat. The determinations of Galactic parameters and structures demonstrate that the maser astrometry can not only contribute significantly to research of individual maser sources, but also to studies of the structure of the Galaxy.

We report on the long term X-ray monitoring with Swift, RXTE, Suzaku, Chandra, and XMM-Newton of the outburst of the newly discovered magnetar Swift J1822.3–1606 (SGR 1822-1606), from the first observations soon after the detection of the short X-ray bursts which led to its discovery (July 2011), through the first stages of its outburst decay (April 2012). Our X-ray timing analysis finds the source rotating with a period of P = 8.43772016(2) s and a period derivative Ṗ = 8.3(2) × 10−14 ss−1, which entails an inferred dipolar surface magnetic field of B ≃ 2.7 × 1013 G at the equator. This measurement makes Swift J1822.3–1606 the second lowest magnetic field magnetar (after SGR 0418+5729; Rea et al. 2010). Following the flux and spectral evolution from the beginning of the outburst, we find that the flux decreased by about an order of magnitude, with a subtle softening of the spectrum, both typical of the outburst decay of magnetars. By modeling the secular thermal evolution of Swift J1822.3–1606, we find that the observed timing properties of the source, as well as its quiescent X-ray luminosity, can be reproduced if it was born with a poloidal and crustal toroidal fields of Bp ~ 1.5 × 1014 G and Btor ~ 7 × 1014 G, respectively, and if its current age is ~550 kyr (Rea et al. 2012).

High-resolution spectra of a giant solar quiescent filament were taken with the Echelle spectrograph at the Vacuum Tower Telescope (VTT; Tenerife, Spain). A mosaic of various spectroheliograms (Hα, Hα±0.5 Å and Na D2) were chosen to examine the filament at different heights in the solar atmosphere. In addition, full-disk images (He i 10830 Å and Ca ii K) of the Chromspheric Telescope and full-disk magnetograms of the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager were used to complement the spectra. Preliminary results are shown of this filament, which had extremely large linear dimensions (~740″) and was observed in November 2011 while it traversed the northern solar hemisphere.

The photometric and RV techniques, although extremely efficient to detect and characterize planets, are, however, indirect techniques (as well as astrometry). Phenomena such as stellar pulsation, inhomogeneous convection, spots or magnetic cycles can prevent us from finding planets or they might degrade the parameters estimation. We will consider the challenges related to the knowledge of stellar activity for the next decade: detect telluric planets in the habitable zone of their stars (from G to M dwarfs), understand the activity in the low-mass end of M dwarf (on which will focus future near-infrared high-resolution spectrograph like SPIRou or CARMENES), limitation to the process of summing several transit observations (in order to characterize the atmospheric components) due to the variability of stellar activity (from the ground or with Spitzer or JWST), as well as the methods proposed and used to overcome this issue.

We develop a robust Bayesian model to derive peculiar velocities and Fundamental Plane (FP) distances for a subsample of 9000 galaxies from the 6dF Galaxy Survey (6dFGS). These galaxies form the basis of 6dFGSv, the largest and most uniform galaxy peculiar-velocity sample to date. We perform a Bayesian analysis of the data set as a whole, determining cosmological parameters from the peculiar-velocity field (e.g., fitting β and the bulk flow), by comparing to the field predicted from the redshift survey and assuming that the galaxy distribution traces the matter distribution.
