We study modules for the general linear group (over an infinite field of arbitrary characteristic) which are direct summands of tensor products of exterior powers and symmetric powers of the natural module. These modules, which we call listing modules, include the tilting modules and the injective modules for Schur algebras. The modules are studied via their relationship to linear source modules for symmetric groups on the one hand, and simple modules for Schur superalgebras on the other. Listing modules are parametrized by certain pairs of partitions. They are used to describe, by generators and relations, the Grothendieck ring of polynomial functors generated by the symmetric and exterior powers. We also (continuing work of J. Given a fibered 3-manifold M, we investigate exactly which boundary slopes can be realized by perturbing fibrations along product discs. Since these perturbed fibrations cap off to give taut foliations in the corresponding surgery manifolds, we obtain surgery information. For example, recall that a knot k is said to satisfy Property P if no finite surgery along k yields a simply-connected 3-manifold. We show that if a non-trivial fibered knot $k\subset S^3$ fails to satisfy Property P, then necessarily k is hyperbolic with degeneracy slope $\pm\frac{2}{1}$. When k is hyperbolic and $d(k)=\frac{2}{1}$ (respectively, $-\frac{2}{1}$), we show that the only candidate for a counterexample to Property P is surgery coefficient $\frac{1}{1}$ (respectively, $-\frac{1}{1}$).

We introduce the notion of tracial topological rank for ${\rm C}^*$-algebras. In the commutative case, this notion coincides with the covering dimension. Inductive limits of ${\rm C}^*$-algebras of the form $PM_n(C(X))P$, where $X$ is a compact metric space with ${\rm dim\,} X\le k$, and $P$ is a projection in $M_n(C(X))$, have tracial topological rank no more than $k$. Non-nuclear ${\rm C}^*$-algebras can have small tracial topological rank. It is shown that if $A$ is a simple unital ${\rm C}^*$-algebra with tracial topological rank $k$ ($<\infty$), then \begin{enumerate} \item[(i)] $A$ is quasidiagonal, \item[(ii)] $A$ has stable rank $1$, \item[(iii)] $A$ has weakly unperforated $K_0(A)$, \item[(iv)] $A$ has the following Fundamental Comparability of Blackadar: if $p,q\in A$ are two projections with $\tau(p)<\tau(q)$ for all tracial states $\tau$ on $A$, then $p\preceq q$. 2000 Mathematics Subject Classification: 46L05, 46L35.

Let K be an algebraically closed field endowed with a complete non-archimedean norm with valuation ring R. Let $f\colon Y \to X$ be a map of K-affinoid varieties. In this paper we study the analytic structure of the image $f(Y) \subset X$; such an image is a typical example of a subanalytic set. We show that the subanalytic sets are precisely the $\mathbf D$-semianalytic sets, where $\mathbf D$ is the truncated division function first introduced by Denef and van den Dries. This result is most conveniently stated as a Quantifier Elimination result for the valuation ring R in an analytic expansion of the language of valued rings. To prove this we establish a Flattening Theorem for affinoid varieties in the style of Hironaka, which allows a reduction to the study of subanalytic sets arising from flat maps, that is, we show that a map of affinoid varieties can be rendered flat by using only finitely many local blowing ups. The case of a flat map is then dealt with by a small extension of a result of Raynaud and Gruson showing that the image of a flat map of affinoid varieties is open in the Grothendieck topology. Using Embedded Resolution of Singularities, we derive in the zero characteristic case, a Uniformization Theorem for subanalytic sets: a subanalytic set can be rendered semianalytic using only finitely many local blowing ups with smooth centres. Let R be a Seifert surface obtained by applying Seifert's algorithm to a connected diagram D for a link L. In this paper, letting D be almost alternating, we give a practical algorithm to determine whether L is a fibered link and R is a fiber surface. We further show that L is a fibered link and R is a fiber surface for L if and only if R is a Hopf plumbing, that is, a successive plumbing of a finite number of Hopf bands. It has been known for some time that this is true if D is alternating, and we show that it is not always true if D is 2-almost alternating. In the appendix, we partially answer C. Adams's open question concerning almost alternating diagrams.

We define two canonical cohomology theories for Hopf C*-algebras and for Hopf von Neumann algebras (with coefficients in their comodules). We then study the situations when these cohomologies vanish. We determine the relationship between the multiplicities of the zeros of certain rational functions defined on the ${\rm SL}_2(\mathbb C)$ and ${\rm PSL}_2(\mathbb C)$ character varieties of knot exteriors. Let $\varGamma =\varGamma _{\tau ,z}$ be one of the $N^2$-dimensional bicovariant first order differential calculi for the quantum groups $\mathrm{GL}_q(N)$, $\mathrm{SL}_q(N)$, $\mathrm{SO}_q(N)$, or $\mathrm{Sp}_q(N)$, where $q$ is a transcendental complex number and $z$ is a regular parameter. It is shown that the de Rham cohomology of Woronowicz' external algebra $\varGamma^\land $ coincides with the de Rham cohomologies of its left-coinvariant, its right-coinvariant and its (two-sided) coinvariant subcomplexes. In the cases $\mathrm{GL}_q(N)$ and $\mathrm{SL}_q(N)$ the cohomology ring is isomorphic to the coinvariant external algebra $\varGamma ^\land _{\scriptscriptstyle{\mathrm{Inv}}}$ and to the vector space of harmonic forms. We prove a Hodge decomposition theorem in these cases. We determine explicitly all the stable manifolds for the stochastic flows on certain homogeneous spaces of a semisimple Lie group of non-compact type induced by Lévy processes on the Lie group.
