We present BioBug, a bionic cognitive response navigation algorithm for mobile robots based on neuroethology principles. It includes a biological antenna model for environment perception and an improved Bug algorithm for motion planning and control. The biological antenna model delineates the interested sensing areas, and thus decreases the computational burden. Then, this obtained environment stimulation is responded to generate the corresponding walking behavior according to BioBug. Simulations and experiments have been carried out in different conditions of obstacle density and boundary shape through algorithm comparisons. Compared with the competitors, BioBug is characterized by not only a smaller path length, but also shorter time for obstacle escape. The results demonstrate the practicality, environment robustness, and obstacle avoidance efficiency of the algorithm.

The increased use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is coincidentally accompanied by a notable lack of sensors suitable for enabling further improvement in levels of autonomy and, consequently, integration into the National Airspace System (NAS). The majority of available sensors suitable for UAV integration into the NAS are based on infrared detectors, focal plane arrays, optical and ultrasonic rangefinders, etc. These sensors are generally not able to detect or identify other UAV-sized targets and, when detection is possible, considerable computational power is typically required for successful identification. Furthermore, the performance of visual-range optical sensor systems may suffer when operating under conditions that are typically encountered during search and rescue, surveillance, combat, and most other common UAV applications. However, the addition of a miniature RADAR sensor can, in consort with other sensors, provide comprehensive target detection and identification capabilities for UAVs. This trend is observed in manned aviation where RADAR sensors are the primary on-board detection and identification sensors. In this paper, a miniature, lightweight X-band RADAR sensor for use on a miniature (710-mm rotor diameter) rotorcraft is described. We present an analysis of the performance of the RADAR sensor in a realistic scenario with two UAVs. Additionally, an analysis of UAV navigation and collision avoidance behaviors is performed to determine the effect of integrating RADAR sensors into UAVs. Further study is also performed to demonstrate the scalability of the RADAR for use with larger UAV classes.

This paper proposes a new effective kinematics method based on the dynamic visual window (DVW) for a surgical robot that is equipped with two instrument arms and one laparoscope arm, to enable doctors to achieve operations with their visual habits under the laparoscopic visual environment. The problem of the consistency principle between the doctor's operations under the visual window's feedback and the master–slave operations of the surgical robot is solved. The kinematics models of the surgical robotic arms are established, and the new kinematics methods based on the DVW of the laparoscope and instrument arms are proposed according to their inverse kinematics with respect to the visual coordinate system. Finally, the proposed kinematics method is verified by simulation experiments based on the theoretical algorithm and the mechanism model; the multiple sets of the simulation data are presented to illustrate the correctness and feasibility of the new method in this research.

Push recovery is one of the most challenging problems for the current humanoid robots. The importance of push recovery can be well observed in the real environment. The critical issue for a humanoid is to maintain and recover its balance against any disturbances. In this research a new stereovision approach is proposed to estimate the robot deviation angle and consequently, the movement of center of mass of the robot is calculated. Then, two novel strategies have been devised to recover the balance of the humanoid which are called “knee strategy” and “knee-hip strategy.” Also, a mathematical model validates the efficiency of the proposed strategies as demonstrated in the paper. Experiments have been conducted on a humanoid robot and demonstrate that the predicted robot deviation angle, using stereovision technique, converges to the actual deviation angle. Stable regions of proposed strategies illustrate that the humanoid can recover its stability in a robust manner. Vision-based estimation also shows a higher correlation to actual deviation angle and a lower fluctuation compared with the output of the acceleration sensor.

This paper tackles the problem of motion planning and control of a car-like robot in an obstacle-ridden workspace. A kinematic model of the vehicle, governed by a homogeneous system of first-order differential equations, is used. A solution to the multi-tasking problem of target convergence, obstacle avoidance, and posture control is then proposed. The approach of solving the problem is two-fold. Firstly, a novel velocity algorithm is proposed to drive the car-like robot from its initial position to the target position. Secondly, a single layer artificial neural network is trained to avoid disc-shaped obstacles and provide corresponding weights, which are then used to develop a function for the steering angles. Thus, our method does not need a priori knowledge of the environment except for the goal position. With the help of the Direct Method of Lyapunov, it is shown that the proposed forms of the velocity and steering angle ensure point stability. For posture stability, we model the two parallel boundaries of a row-structured parking bay as continua of disk-shaped obstacles. Thus, our method is extendable to ensuring posture stability, which gives the desired final orientation. Computer simulations of the generated path are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the method.

Robotics Agent Coacher for Cerebral Palsy motor Function (RAC CP Fun) is an attempt to implement socially assistive robotics, and a motor learning approach in rehabilitating movement disorders with a central origin. The concept and architecture of RAC CP Fun implements the motor learning theory and behavioral approach, i.e. principles of repetition, stages of learning, appropriate feedback, random practice, and enriched environments. Eleven children with cerebral palsy (CP) and fourteen typically developed (TD) children participated in two procedures while interacting with a robot and performing motor exercises. The interaction level and motor performance of children were measured and compared. Children with CP exhibited a higher interaction level; however, their motor performance was lower than that of TD children. RAC CP Fun was found to be feasible to interact with children of pre-school age, to augment the motivation of the children with CP, and to involve the children in motor exercises.

In this paper, a new sensor-based approach called nonholonomic random replanner (NRR) is presented for motion planning of car-like mobile robots. The robot is incrementally directed toward its destination using a nonholonomic rapidly exploring random tree (RRT) algorithm. At each iteration, the robot's perceived map of the environment is updated using sensor readings and is used for local motion planning. If the goal was not visible to the robot, an approximate path toward the goal is calculated and the robot traces it to an extent within its sensor range. The robot updates its motion to goal through replanning. This procedure is repeated until the goal lies within the scope of the robot, after which it finds a more precise path by sampling in a tighter Goal Region for the nonholonomic RRT. Three main replanning strategies are proposed to decide when to perform a visibility scan and when to replan a new path. Those are named Basic, Deliberative and Greedy strategies, which yield different paths. The NRR was also modified for motion planning of Dubin's car-like robots. The proposed algorithm is probabilistically complete and its effectiveness and efficiency were tested by running several simulations and the resulting runtimes and path lengths were compared to the basic RRT method.

Traditional cable robots derive their manipulation capabilities using spooling winches at fixed base locations. In our previous work, we examined enhancing manipulation capabilities of cable robots by the addition of base mobility to spooling winches (allowing a group of mobile robots to cooperatively manipulate a payload using cables). Base mobility facilitated the regulation of the tension-direction (via active coordination of mobile bases) and allowed for better conditioning of the wrench-feasible workspace. In this paper we explore putting idler pulleys on the payload attachment as alternate means to simplify the design and enable practical deployment. We examine analysis of the system using ellipse geometry and develop a virtual cable-subsystem formulation (which also facilitates subsumption into the previously developed mobile cable robot analysis framework). We also seek improvement of the tension distribution by utilizing configuration space redundancy to shape the tension null space. This tension distribution shaping is implemented in the form of a tension factor optimization problem over the workspace and explored via both simulation and experimental studies.

This paper proposes a localization scheme using ultrasonic beacons in an unstructured multi-block workspace. Indoor localization schemes using ultrasonic sensors have widely been studied due to their low costs and high accuracies. However, ultrasonic sensors are susceptible to environmental noise due to the propagation characteristics of ultrasonic waves. In addition, the decay of ultrasonic signals over long distances implies that ultrasonic sensors are unsuitable for use in large indoor environments. To overcome these shortcomings of ultrasonic sensors, while retaining their advantages, a multi-block approach was devised by dividing an indoor space into several blocks with multiple beacons in each block. However, it is difficult to divide an indoor space into several blocks when beacons cannot be installed in a regular manner or when some new beacons are installed. To resolve this difficulty, a dynamic algorithm is needed to divide an indoor space into multiple blocks and to select suitable beacons. Therefore, this paper proposes a real-time localization scheme to estimate the position of a mobile robot independent of beacon locations and to estimate the position of a new beacon installed at an unknown position. A beacon selection algorithm was developed to select optimal beacons according to robot position and to set up sets of beacons for mobile robot navigation. By using the new beacon searching and calibration algorithm, a mobile robot is able to navigate in an unknown space without requiring the additional setup time needed to install new beacons. The performance of the proposed localization system was verified using real experiments.

This paper presents decentralized algorithms for coverage with mobile robots on a graph. Coverage is an important capability of multi-robot systems engaged in a number of different applications, including placement for environmental modeling, deployment for maximal quality surveillance, and even coordinated construction. We use distributed vertex substitution for locational optimization and equal mass partitioning, and the controllers minimize the corresponding cost functions. We prove that the proposed controller with two-hop communication guarantees convergence to the locally optimal configuration. We evaluate the algorithms in simulations and also using four mobile robots.

In this paper, we focus on the unknown environments without artificial landmarks and features, such as disaster situations and polar regions. An approach to active exploration based on an on-line scheme for autonomous allocation of landmarks is proposed. Specifically, the robot carries along with itself some landmarks which are to be allocated during the exploration according to some heuristic rules. The utility of landmark allocation is analyzed and calculated. Then the active exploration is converted into a problem of multi-objective optimization. The objective function includes three weighted terms: the accuracy of localization and mapping, the coverage rate of the unknown environment and the utility of the allocated landmarks. By solving this optimization problem, control inputs of the robot are computed to guarantee that accurate localization, high-quality mapping and complete exploration can be achieved simultaneously. Moreover, supplementation and redundancy elimination of the allocated landmarks are executed to make a complete and non-redundant coverage for the environment. Finally, some landmarks, together with a device for allocating these landmarks, are developed. Both experiment and simulation results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

The goal of this research is to establish a methodology to actively control a pneumatically driven robotic device that can induce specific muscle force patterns in target muscles during a subject's voluntary movement. In this paper, the generation of constant forces in the rectus femoris muscle throughout the knee extension, i.e., isotonic contractions, was studied. Due to a highly nonlinear nature of mapping the joint torque to muscle force, a simple application of constant torques to the knee joint would not realize isotonic contractions. The proposed robotic exercise accounted for nonlinear moment arms of muscles as functions of joint angles and nonlinear coordination of multiple muscles in the neuromuscular system to accomplish individual muscle control. A pneumatically powered one degree-of-freedom device that can impose active force feedback control has been designed and built. An exercise-planning algorithm has been developed that involved a musculoskeletal model of the lower body, and the dynamics of a pneumatic actuator. Five constant force profiles were tested for 20 healthy volunteers and electromyographic signals were collected while the device was applying calculated force profiles.

Redundant actuation for the parallel kinematic machine (PKM) is a well-known technique for overcoming general drawbacks of the PKM by helping it to avoid singularity and enhance stiffness characteristics, among others. Torque distribution plays a critical role in redundant actuation because this actuation causes the PKM to consume too much energy or put a substantial amount of stress on joints and links. This paper proposes a new torque distribution method for reducing the maximum torque of the actuator of a planar PKM. Here the main idea behind the proposed method is the use of superposition of a particular solution for a non-redundant case and an optimized null-space solution for a redundant case with a constant coefficient. The optimal value of a null-space solution can be easily determined by checking only the intersection points of the profile of the actuator's torque as the coefficient varies. We consider three cases of planar PKMs—2-, 3-, and 4-RRR PKMs—and present a detailed procedure for deriving a kinematic solution for the 2-RRR PKM based on Screw theory. We compare the proposed method with the minimum-norm pseudo-inverse method and assess a limitation of the proposed method. The torque distribution algorithm can be used to determine the number of actuators in an efficient manner and to reduce energy consumption.

This paper proposes a simple fuzzy sliding mode control to achieve the best trajectory tracking for the robot manipulator. In the core of the proposed method, by applying the feedback linearization technique, the known dynamics of the robot's manipulator is removed; then, in order to overcome the remaining uncertainties, a classic sliding mode control is designed. Afterward, by applying the TS fuzzy model, the classic sliding mode controller is converted to fuzzy sliding mode controller with very simple rule base. The mathematical analysis shows that the robot manipulator with the new proposed control in tracking the robot manipulator in presence of uncertainties has the globally asymptotic stability. Finally, to show the performance of the proposed method, the controller is simulated on a robot manipulator with two degrees of freedom as case study of the research. Simulation results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed control scheme in presence of the structured and unstructured uncertainties.

Navigating along a set of programmed points in a completely unknown environment is a challenging task which mostly depends on the way the robot perceives and symbolizes the environment and decisions it takes in order to avoid the obstacles while it intends to reach subsequent goals. Tenacity and Traversability (T2)1-based strategies have demonstrated to be highly effective for reactive navigation, extending the benefits of the artificial Potential Field method to complex situations, such as trapping zones or mazes. This paper presents a new approach for reactive mobile robot behavior control which rules the actions to be performed to avoid unexpected obstacles while the robot executes a mission between several defined sites. This new strategy combines the T2 principles to escape from trapping zones together with additional criteria based on the Nearness Diagram (ND)13 strategy to move in cluttered or densely occupied scenarios. Success in a complete set of experiments, using a mobile robot equipped with a single camera, shows extensive environmental conditions where the strategy can be applied.

In this study, some geometric, kinematic, and dynamic aspects of the design of a Stewart-Gough platform are examined. The focus of the analyses is on a particular Stewart-Gough platform that we have constructed. The analysis begins with workspace simulations for different moving platform orientations. The computations extend to a parametric study of some geometric and kinematic constraints: Joint angle, rotation angle, and limb length. Actuator force is another parameter considered; and the triple relationship between workspace, joint angle, and actuator force is discussed. Parametric analyses are culminated with a brief discussion of the real design parameters.

Three-DOF manipulators were employed for juggling of polygonal objects in order to have full control over object's configuration. Dynamic grasp condition is obtained for the instances that the manipulators carry the object on their palms. Manipulation problem is modeled as a nonlinear optimal control problem. In this optimal control problem, time of free flight is used as a free parameter to determine throw and catch times. Cost function is selected to get maximum covered horizontal distance using minimum energy. By selecting third-order polynomials for joint motions, the problem is changed to a constrained parameter selection problem. Adaptive particle swarm optimization method is consequently employed to solve the optimization problem. Effectiveness of the optimization algorithm is verified by a set of simulations in MSC. ADAMS.

What factors affect users' perceptions of physical human–robot interactions? To answer this question, this study examined whether the skin temperature of a social robot affected users' perceptions of the robot during physical interaction. Results from a between-subjects experiment (warm, intermediate, cool, or no interaction) with a dinosaur robot demonstrated that skin temperature significantly affects users' perceptions and evaluations of a socially interactive robot. Additionally, this study found that social presence had partial mediating effects on several dependent variables. Important implications and limitations for improving human–robot interactions are discussed here.

The absolute accuracy of a small industrial robot is improved using a 30-parameter calibration model. The error model takes into account a full kinematic calibration and five compliance parameters related to the stiffness in joints 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6. The linearization of the Jacobian is performed to iteratively find the modeled error parameters. Two coordinate measurement systems are used independently: a laser tracker and an optical CMM. An optimized end-effector is developed specifically for each measurement system. The robot is calibrated using fewer than 50 configurations and the calibration efficiency validated in 1000 configurations using either the laser tracker or the optical CMM. A telescopic ballbar is also used for validation. The results show that the optical CMM yields slightly better results, even when used with the simple triangular plate end-effector that was developed mainly for the laser tracker.

Considering undesired slippage between manipulated object and finger tips of a multi-robot system, adaptive control synthesis of the object grasping and manipulation is addressed in this paper. Although many studies can be found in the literature dealing with grasp analysis and grasp synthesis, most assume no slippage between the finger tips and the object. Slippage can occur for many reasons such as disturbances, uncertainties in parameters, and dynamics of the system. In this paper, system dynamics is analyzed using a new presentation of friction and slippage dynamics. Then an adaptive control law is proposed for trajectory tracking and slippage control of the object as well as compensation for parameter uncertainties of the system, such as mass properties and coefficients of friction. Stability of the proposed adaptive controller is studied analytically and the performance of the system is studied numerically.
