In his work on modularity theorems, Wiles proved a numerical criterion for a map of rings $R\to T$ to be an isomorphism of complete intersections. He used this to show that certain deformation rings and Hecke algebras associated to a mod $p$ Galois representation at non-minimal level are isomorphic and complete intersections, provided the same is true at minimal level. In this paper we study Hecke algebras acting on cohomology of Shimura curves arising from maximal orders in indefinite quaternion algebras over the rationals localized at a semistable irreducible mod $p$ Galois representation $\bar {\rho }$. If $\bar {\rho }$ is scalar at some primes dividing the discriminant of the quaternion algebra, then the Hecke algebra is still isomorphic to the deformation ring, but is not a complete intersection, or even Gorenstein, so the Wiles numerical criterion cannot apply. We consider a weight-2 newform $f$ which contributes to the cohomology of the Shimura curve and gives rise to an augmentation $\lambda _f$ of the Hecke algebra. We quantify the failure of the Wiles numerical criterion at $\lambda _f$ by computing the associated Wiles defect purely in terms of the local behavior at primes dividing the discriminant of the global Galois representation $\rho _f$ which $f$ gives rise to by the Eichler–Shimura construction. One of the main tools used in the proof is Taylor–Wiles–Kisin patching.

To a pair $P$ and $Q$ of finite posets we attach the toric ring $K[P,Q]$ whose generators are in bijection to the isotone maps from $P$ to $Q$. This class of algebras, called isotonian, are natural generalizations of the so-called Hibi rings. We determine the Krull dimension of these algebras and for particular classes of posets $P$ and $Q$ we show that $K[P,Q]$ is normal and that their defining ideal admits a quadratic Gröbner basis.

All rings are commutative with identity, and all modules are unital. In this paper we introduce the concept of a quasi-copure submodule of a multiplication $R$-module $M$ and will give some results about it. We give some properties of the tensor product of finitely generated faithful multiplication modules.

In a multiplication module, prime submodules have the following property: if a prime submodule contains a finite intersection of submodules, then one of the submodules is contained in the prime submodule. In this paper, we generalize this property to infinite intersection of submodules and call such prime submodules strongly prime submodules. A multiplication module in which every prime submodule is strongly prime will be called a strongly 0-dimensional module. It is also an extension of strongly 0-dimensional rings. After this we investigate properties of strongly 0-dimensional modules and give relations of von Neumann regular modules, $Q$-modules and strongly 0-dimensional modules.

We introduce and investigate the notion of envelope dimension of commutative rings and modules over them. In particular, we show that the envelope dimension of a ring, $R$, is equal to that of the $R$-module ${{\mathbb{R}}^{\left( \mathbb{N} \right)}}$. We also prove that the Krull dimension of a ring is no more than its envelope dimension and characterize Noetherian rings for which these two dimensions are equal. Moreover, we generalize and study the concept of simplified radical formula for modules, which we defined in an earlier paper.

Let R = ⊕i ∈ ℤRi be a ℤ-graded ring and M = ⊕i ∈ ℤMi be a graded R-module. Providing some results on graded multiplication modules, some equivalent conditions for which a finitely generated graded R-module to be graded multiplication will be given. We define generalised graded multiplication module and determine some of its certain graded prime submodules. It will be shown that any graded submodule of a finitely generated generalised graded multiplication R-module M has a kind of primary decomposition. Using this, we give a characterisation of graded primary submodules of M. These lead to a kind of characterisation of finitely generated generalised graded multiplication modules.

We will state some conditions under which if a quotient of a module M satisfies the radical formula of degree k (s.t.r.f of degree k), so does M. Especially, we will introduce some particular modules M′ such that M′ ⊕ M″ s.t.r.f of degree k, when M″ s.t.r.f of degree k. Furthermore, we will show that, under certain conditions, if the completion of a module M s.t.r.f of degree k, then there is a non-negative integer k′ such that M s.t.r.f. of degree k′. Moreover, we state a corrected version of Leung and Man's theorem (K. H. Leung and S. H. Man, On commutative Noetherian rings which satisfy the radical formula, Glasgow Math. J. 39 (1997), 285–293) on Noetherian rings that satisfies the radical formula.

It is shown that the well-known characterizations of when a commutative ring R has Noetherian spectrum carry over to characterizations of when the set Spec(M) of prime submodules of a finitely generated module M is Noetherian. The symmetric algebra SR(M) of M is used to show that the Noetherian property of Spec(R), and some related properties, pass from the ring R to the finitely generated R-modules.

Let R be a commutative ring with identity. We will say that an R-module M has Nakayama property, if IM = M, where I is an ideal of R, implies that there exists a ∈ R such that aM = 0 and a − 1 ∈ I. Nakayama's Lemma is a well-known result, which states that every finitely generated R-module has Nakayama property. In this paper, we will study Nakayama property for modules. It is proved that R is a perfect ring if and only if every R-module has Nakayama property (Theorem 4.9).

Let B be a submodule of an R-module M. The intersection of all prime (resp. weakly prime) submodules of M containing B is denoted by rad(B) (resp. wrad(B)). A generalisation of 〈E(B)〉 denoted by UE(B) of M will be introduced. The inclusions 〈E(B)〉 ⊆ UE(B) ⊆ wrad(B) ⊆ rad(B) are motivations for studying the equalities UE(B) = wrad(B) and UE(B) = rad(B) in this paper. It is proved that if R is an arithmetical ring, then UE(B) = wrad(B). In Theorem 2.5, a generalisation of the main result of [11] is given.

Let R and S be commutative rings, not necessarily with identity. We investigate the ideals, prime ideals, radical ideals, primary ideals, and maximal ideals of R×S. Unlike the case where R and S have an identity, an ideal (or primary ideal, or maximal ideal) of R×S need not be a ‘subproduct’ I×J of ideals. We show that for a ring R, for each commutative ring S every ideal (or primary ideal, or maximal ideal) is a subproduct if and only if R is an e-ring (that is, for r∈R, there exists er∈R with err=r) (or u-ring (that is, for each proper ideal A of R, )), the Abelian group (R/R2 ,+) has no maximal subgroups).

In this paper we prove that if R is a Prüfer domain, then the R-module R⊕ R satisfies the radical formula.

A proper submodule $N$ of an $R$-module $M$ is called a weakly prime submodule, if for each submodule $K$ of $M$ and elements $a, b$ of $R$, $abK \subseteq N$, implies that $aK\subseteq N$ or $bK\subseteq N$. In this paper we will study weakly prime submodules and we shall compare weakly prime submodules with prime submodules.

In this paper, we show that the lattice of closed subsets of the completion, in the Jacobson radical topology, of a finitely generated module M is isomorphic to the completion, under the Hausdorff topology, of the lattice of closed subsets of M. This extends submodule-theoretic results for complete modules to modules satisfying Chevalley's Theorem. We show that the lattice of submodules of every finitely generated module over a semi-local ring R is complete in the Hausdorff topology if and only if R is complete in the Jacobson radical topology.

The concept of the M-radical of a submodule B of an R-module A is discussed (R is a commutative ring with identity and A is a unitary fl-module). The M-radical of B is defined as the intersection of all prime submodules of A containing B. The main result of the paper is that if denotes the ideal radical of (B:A), then M-rad B = provided that A is a finitely generated multiplication module. Additionally, it is shown that if A is an arbitrary module, where for some
